Using a Wang-Landau entropic sampling scheme, we investigate the effects of quenched bond randomness on a particular case of a triangular Ising model with nearest- ($J_{nn}$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($J_{nnn}$) antiferromagnetic interactions. We consider the case $R=J_{nnn}/J_{nn}=1$, for which the pure model is known to have a columnar ground state where rows of nearest-neighbor spins up and down alternate and undergoes a weak first-order phase transition from the ordered to the paramagnetic state. With the introduction of quenched bond randomness we observe the effects signaling the expected conversion of the first-order phase transition to a second-order phase transition and using the Lee-Kosterlitz method, we quantitatively verify this conversion. The emerging, under random bonds, continuous transition shows a strongly saturating specific heat behavior, corresponding to a negative exponent $α$, and belongs to a new distinctive universality class with $ν=1.135(11)$, $γ/ν=1.744(9)$, and $β/ν=0.124(8)$. Thus, our results for the critical exponents support an extensive but weak universality and the emerged continuous transition has the same magnetic critical exponent (but a different thermal critical exponent) as a wide variety of two-dimensional (2d) systems without and with quenched disorder.
We study the finite-temperature superfluid transition in a modified two-dimensional (2D) XY model with power-law distributed "scratch"-like bond disorder. As its exponent decreases, the disorder grows stronger and the mechanism driving the superfluid transition changes from conventional vortex-pair unbinding to a strong randomness criticality (termed scratched-XY criticality) characterized by a non-universal jump of the superfluid stiffness. The existence of the scratched-XY criticality at finite temperature and its description by an asymptotically exact semi-renormalization group theory, prev…
We study the ferromagnetic phase transition in a randomly layered Heisenberg magnet using large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations. Our results provide numerical evidence for the infinite-randomness scenario recently predicted within a {strong-disorder renormalization group approach}. Specifically, we investigate the finite-size scaling behavior of the magnetic susceptibility which is characterized by a non-universal power-law divergence in the Griffiths phase. We also study the perpendicular and parallel spin-wave stiffnesses in the Griffiths phase. In agreement with the theoretical predictions, t…
We study a modified model of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with quenched disorder, in which the driving force decreases as the interface rises up. A critical state is self-organized, and the anomalous scaling law with roughness exponent alpha=0.63 is numerically obtained.
We show that a simple model for the propagation of a rumor on a small-world network exhibits critical behavior at a finite randomness of the underlying graph. The transition occurs between a regime where the rumor "dies" in a small neighborhood of its origin, and a regime where it spreads over a finite fraction of the whole population. Critical exponents are evaluated through finite-size scaling analysis, and the dependence of the critical randomness with the network connectivity is studied. The behavior of this system as a function of the network randomness bears noticeable similarities with …
We investigate the effect of weak randomness on the antiferromagnetic anisotropic spin-1 chain. We use Abelian bosonization to construct the low-energy effective theory. A renormalization group calculation up to second order in the strength of the disorder is performed on this effective theory. We observe in this framework the destruction of the antiferromagnetic ordered phase `a la Imry-Ma. We predict the effects of a random magnetic field along z axis, a random field in the XY plane as well as random exchange with and without XY symmetry. Instabilities of massless phases appear in general by…
We introduce an exact replica method for the study of critical systems with quenched bond randomness in two dimensions. For the $q$-state Potts model we show that a line of renormalization group fixed points interpolates from weak to strong randomness as $q-2$ grows from small to large values. This theory exhibits a $q$-independent sector, and allows at the same time for a correlation length exponent which keeps the Ising value and continuously varying magnetization exponent and effective central charge. These findings appear to solve long standing numerical and theoretical puzzles, and to ill…
We study the propagation of coherent waves in a nonlinearly-induced random potential, and find regimes of self-organized criticality and other regimes where the nonlinear equivalent of Anderson localization prevails. The regime of self-organized criticality leads to power-law decay of transport [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 233901 (2018)], whereas the second regime exhibits exponential decay.
We study slowly pulling block-spring models in random media. Second-order phase transitions exist in a model pulled by a constant force in the case of velocity-strengthening friction. If external forces are slowly increased, nearly critical states are self-organized. Slips of various sizes occur, and the probability distributions of slip size roughly obey power laws. The exponent is close to that in the quenched Edwards--Wilkinson model. Furthermore, the slip-size distributions are investigated in cases of Coulomb friction, velocity-weakening friction.
We study transitions between distinct phases of one-dimensional periodically driven (Floquet) systems. We argue that these are generically controlled by infinite-randomness fixed points of a strong-disorder renormalization group procedure. Working in the fermionic representation of the prototypical Floquet Ising chain, we leverage infinite randomness physics to provide a simple description of Floquet (multi)criticality in terms of a new type of domain wall associated with time-translational symmetry-breaking and the formation of `Floquet time crystals'. We validate our analysis via numerical s…
The critical exponent beta =0.17(1) for the three-dimensional random-field Ising model (RFIM) order parameter upon zero-field cooling (ZFC) has been determined using extinction-free magnetic x-ray scattering techniques for Fe(0.85)Zn(0.15)F2. This result is consistent with other exponents determined for the RFIM in that Rushbrooke scaling is satisfied. Nevertheless, there is poor agreement with equilibrium computer simulations, and the ZFC results do not agree with field-cooling (FC) results. We present details of hysteresis in Bragg scattering amplitudes and line shapes that help elucidate th…
The spatially anisotropic triangular antiferromagnet is investigated with the numerical diagonalization method. As the anisotropy varies, the model changes into a variety of systems such as the one-dimensional, triangular, and square-lattice antiferromagnets. Taking into account such a geometrical character, we impose the screw-boundary condition, which interpolates smoothly the one- and two-dimensional lattice structures. Diagonalizing the finite clusters with N=16,20,...,32 spins, we observe an intermediate phase between the VBS and Neel phases. Suppressing the intermediate phase by applying…
It has been proposed that there are new degrees of freedom intrinsic to quantum critical points that contribute to quantum critical physics. We study 2+1 D antiferromagnets in order to explore possible new quantum critical physics arising from nontrivial topological effects. We show that skyrmion excitations are stable at criticality and have nonzero probability at arbitrarily low temperatures. To include quantum critical skyrmion effects, we find a class of exact solutions composed of skyrmion and antiskyrmion superpositions, which we call topolons. We include the topolons in the partition fu…
We study dynamical phase transitions from antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic states driven by an interaction quench in the fermionic Hubbard model using the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory. We identify two dynamical transition points where the relaxation behavior qualitatively changes: one corresponds to the thermal phase transition at which the order parameter decays critically slowly in a power law $\propto t^{-1/2}$, and the other is connected to the existence of nonthermal antiferromagnetic order in systems with effective temperature above the thermal critical temperature. The fr…
We study quantum phase transitions in Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains with a staggered power-law decaying long-range interactions. Employing the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm and the fidelity susceptibility as the criticality measure, we establish more accurate values of quantum critical points than the results obtained from the spin-wave approximation, quantum Monte Carlo and DMRG in literatures. The deviation is especially evident for strong long-range interactions. We extend isotropic long-range interactions to the anisotropic cases and find that kaleidoscope of …
The effect of the quenched bond-randomness on the ordering of the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice is investigated by means of an exact-diagonalization method. When the randomness exceeds a critical value, the ground state of the model exhibits a transition within the non-magnetic state into the randomness-relevant gapless spin-liquid state. Implications to the S=1/2 kagome-lattice antiferromagnet herbertsmithite is discussed.
We study quantum phase transitions in transverse-field Ising spin chains in which the couplings are random but hyperuniform, in the sense that their large-scale fluctuations are suppressed. We construct a one-parameter family of disorder models in which long-wavelength fluctuations are increasingly suppressed as a parameter $α$ is tuned. For $α= 0$, one recovers the familiar infinite-randomness critical point. For $0 < α< 1$, we find a line of infinite-randomness critical points with continuously varying critical exponents; however, the Griffiths phases that flank the critical point at $α= 0$ …
We study the effect in geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets of weak, random variations in the strength of exchange interactions. Without disorder the simplest classical models for these systems have macroscopically degenerate ground states, and this degeneracy may prevent ordering at any temperature. Weak exchange randomness favours a small subset of these ground states and induces a spin-glass transition at an ordering temperature determined by the amplitude of modulations in interaction strength. We use the replica approach to formulate a theory for this transition, showing that it fall…
We study the triangular-lattice Ising model with dipolar interactions, inspired by its realisation in artificial arrays of nanomagnets. We show that a classical spin-liquid forms at intermediate temperatures, and that its behaviour can be tuned by temperature and/or a small lattice distortion between a string Luttinger liquid and a domain-wall-network state. At low temperature there is a transition into a magnetically ordered phase, which can be first-order or continous with a crossover in the critical behaviour between Pokrovsky-Talapov and 2D-Ising universality. When the Pokrovsky-Talapov cr…
We study the thermal phase transitions of the four-fold degenerate phases (the plaquette and single stripe states) in two-dimensional frustrated Ising model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice using Monte Carlo simulations. The critical Ashkin-Teller-like behavior is identified both in the parameter regions with the plaquette and single stripe phases, respectively. The four-state Potts-critical end points differentiating the continuous transitions from the first-order ones are estimated based on finite-size scaling analyses. Furthermore, similar behavior of the transition to the four-fold single…
We report novel effects of randomness in the S=1 bond-alternating antiferromagnetic chain compound with a dimer-singlet ground state [Ni(N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)propane-1,3-diamine(mu-NO2]ClO4 abbreviated as NTENP. The 15N NMR spectra develop a continuum with sharply peaked edges at low temperatures, indicating an inhomogeneous staggered magnetization induced by magnetic field. We attribute this to random anisotropic interactions due to disorder of NO2 groups in the chains. The field-induced antiferromagnetic transition exhibits remarkably anisotropic behavior. We propose that a field-induced i…
The effect of bond randomness on the spin-gapped ground state of the spin-1 bond-alternating antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is discussed. By using the loop cluster quantum Monte Carlo method, we investigate the stability of topological order in terms of the recently proposed twist order parameter [M. Nakamura and S. Todo: Phys. Rev. Lett. 89 (2002) 077204]. It is observed that the dimer phases as well as the Haldane phase of the spin-1 Heisenberg chain are robust against a weak randomness, though the valence-bond-solid-like topological order in the latter phase is destroyed by introducing …
We study the nonequilibrium properties of a nonergodic random quantum chain in which highly excited eigenstates exhibit critical properties usually associated with quantum critical ground states. The ground state and excited states of this system belong to different universality classes, characterized by infinite-randomness quantum critical behavior. Using strong-disorder renormalization group techniques, we show that the crossover between the zero and finite energy density regimes is universal. We analytically derive a flow equation describing the unitary dynamics of this isolated system at f…
In certain Mott-insulating dimerized antiferromagnets, triplet excitations of the paramagnetic phase can decay into the two-particle continuum. When such a magnet undergoes a quantum phase transition into a magnetically ordered state, this coupling becomes part of the critical theory provided that the lattice ordering wavevector is zero. One microscopic example is the staggered-dimer antiferromagnet on the square lattice, for which deviations from O(3) universality have been reported in numerical studies. Using both symmetry arguments and microscopic calculations, we show that a non-trivial cu…
We investigate the quantum phase transition in an $S = 1/2$ dimerized Heisenberg antiferromagnet in three spatial dimensions. By performing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations and detailed finite-size scaling analyses, we obtain high-precision results for the quantum critical properties at the transition from the magnetically disordered dimer-singlet phase to the antiferromagnetically ordered Néel phase. This transition breaks O($N$) symmetry with $N = 3$ in $D = 3 + 1$ dimensions. This is the upper critical dimension, where multiplicative logarithmic corrections to the leading mean-fi…
We study a one-dimensional model which undergoes a transition between an active and an absorbing phase. Monte Carlo simulations supported by some additional arguments prompted as to predict the exact location of the critical point and critical exponents in this model. The exponents $δ=0.5$ and $z=2$ follows from random-walk-type arguments. The exponents $β= ν_{\perp}$ are found to be non-universal and encoded in the singular part of reactivation probability, as recently discussed by H. Hinrichsen (cond-mat/0008179). A related model with quenched randomness is also studied.
We propose a kind of Ginzburg--Landau equation with quenched randomness. There is a pinning--depinning transition in the system when the external magnetic force is changed. The transition is self-organized when the external magnetic field is slowly changed under the demagnetizing effect. The total magnetization increases stepwise and the probability distribution of the increase in the total magnetization approximately obeys a power law. A hysteresis loop is obtained when the external magnetic field is changed reciprocally. In our model, the coercivity in the magnetization curve is expressed as…
The quantum kicked rotor (QKR) driven by $d$ incommensurate frequencies realizes the universality class of $d$-dimensional disordered metals. For $d>3$, the system exhibits an Anderson metal-insulator transition which has been observed within the framework of an atom optics realization. However, the absence of genuine randomness in the QKR reflects in critical phenomena beyond those of the Anderson universality class. Specifically, the system shows strong sensitivity to the algebraic properties of its effective Planck constant $\tilde h \equiv 4π/q$. For integer $q$, the system may be in a glo…
We revisit two-dimensional frustrated quantum magnetism from a new perspective, with the aim of exploring new critical points and critical phases. We study easy-plane triangular antiferromagnets using a dual vortex approach, fermionizing the vortices with a Chern-Simons field. Herein we develop this technique for integer-spin systems which generically exhibit a simple paramagnetic phase as well as magnetically-ordered phases with coplanar and collinear spin order. Within the fermionized-vortex approach, we derive a low-energy effective theory containing Dirac fermions with two flavors minimall…
We study the three-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the simple-cubic lattice, paying attention to the surface critical behaviors. When the nearest neighboring interactions of the surface is tuned, we obtain a phase diagram similar to the XY model, owing to the emergent O(2) symmetry of the bulk critical point. For the ordinary transition, we get $y_{h1}=0.780(3)$, $η_\parallel=1.44(1)$, and $η_\perp=0.736(6)$; for the special transition, we get $y_s=0.59(1)$, $y_{h1}=1.693(2)$, $η_\parallel=-0.391(4)$, and $η_\perp=-0.179(5)$; in the extraordinary-log phase, the surface correlation funct…
Experimental quest for the hypothetical "quantum spin liquid" state has recently met a few promising candidate materials including organic salts κ-(ET)2Cu2(CN)3 and EtMe3Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2, S=1/2 triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets consisting of molecular dimers. These compounds exhibit no magnetic ordering nor the spin freezing down to very low temperature, while various physical quantities exhibit gapless behaviors. Recent dielectric measurements revealed the glassy dielectric response suggesting the random freezing of the electric polarization degrees of freedom. Inspired by this obs…
We study the antiferromagnetic {\it XY} model on a triangular lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations, focusing on its ordering and critical properties. Our result clearly shows that two separate transitions occur at two distinct temperatures, the one at a higher temperature is associated with a $Z_2$-symmetry breaking driven by the chirality, and the one at a lower temperature is associated with the onset of the quasi-long-range order of the {\it XY} spin. We carefully examine the critical properties of each transition to find that the criticality of the chiral transition is consistent w…
The honeycomb-lattice Ising antiferromagnet subjected to the imaginary magnetic field $H=iθT /2$ with the "topological" angle $θ$ and temperature $T$ was investigated numerically. In order to treat such a complex-valued statistical weight, we employed the transfer-matrix method. As a probe to detect the order-disorder phase transition, we resort to an extended version of the fidelity $F$, which makes sense even for such a non-hermitian transfer matrix. As a preliminary survey, for an intermediate value of $θ$, we investigated the phase transition via the fidelity susceptibility $χ_F^{(θ)}$. Th…
Monte Carlo simulations of the SU(2)-symmetric deconfined critical point action reveal strong violations of scale invariance for the deconfinement transition. We find compelling evidence that the generic runaway renormalization flow of the gauge coupling is to a weak first order transition, similar to the case of U(1)$\times$U(1) symmetry. Our results imply that recent numeric studies of the Nèel antiferromagnet to valence bond solid quantum phase transition in SU(2)-symmetric models were not accurate enough in determining the nature of the transition.
The free fermion nature of interacting spins in one dimensional (1D) spin chains still lacks a rigorous study. In this letter we show that the length-$1$ spin strings significantly dominate critical properties of spinons, magnons and free fermions in the 1D antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain. Using the Bethe ansatz solution we analytically calculate exact scaling functions of thermal and magnetic properties of the model, providing a rigorous understanding of the quantum criticality of spinons. It turns out that the double peaks in specific heat elegantly mark two crossover temperatures fanning o…
Low-temperature magnetization curves and thermodynamics of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the antiferromagnetic intradimer interaction and either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interdimer interaction are investigated in a highly frustrated parameter region, where localized many-magnon eigenstates provide the most dominant contribution to magnetothermodynamics. Low-energy states of the highly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer can be accordingly found from a mapping correspondence with an effective triangular-lattice spin-1/2 Ising model in a field. …
We develop a strong-disorder renormalization group to study quantum phase transitions with continuous O$(N)$ symmetry order parameters under the influence of both quenched disorder and dissipation. For Ohmic dissipation, as realized in Hertz' theory of the itinerant antiferromagnetic transition or in the superconductor-metal transition in nanowires, we find the transition to be governed by an exotic infinite-randomness fixed point in the same universality class as the (dissipationless) random transverse-field Ising model. We determine the critical behavior and calculate key observables at the …
