We present an exact renormalization group analysis of the Loschmidt amplitude of the quantum $N$-state Potts chain with random quench-disordered nearest neighbor bonds, under the extreme dynamical quantum quench. We prove that the phase transition of the Loschmidt rate function remains sharp in general. For typical bond distributions, the phase transition is found to be a linear-cusp, as in the pure model. For some special discrete bond distributions, however, the rate function exhibits logarithmic divergences. These singularities are due to the competition between the non-critical dynamical phases of the pure model, which is very different from how disorder affects equilibrium phase transitions. In addition, due to the periodicity of the complex exponential function, all continuous bond distributions result in rate functions which converge to a universal value at large time.
Critical behavior in short-time dynamics is investigated by a Monte Carlo study for the random-bond Potts ferromagnet with a trinary distribution of quenched disorders on two-dimensional triangular lattices. The dynamic scaling is verified and applied to estimate critical exponents $θ$, $z$ and $β/ν$ for several realizations of the trinary distribution. Our critical scaling analysis strongly indicates that the bond randomness influences the critical universality.
We report on single-cluster Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising, 4-state Potts and 10-state Potts models on quenched ensembles of planar, tri-valent random graphs. We confirm that the first-order phase transition of the 10-state Potts model on regular 2D lattices is softened by the quenched connectivity disorder represented by the random graphs and that the exponents of the Ising and 4-state Potts models are altered from their regular lattice counterparts. The behaviour of spin models on such graphs is thus more analogous to models with quenched bond disorder than to Poisonnian random lattice…
We investigate the non-self-averaging properties of the dynamics of Ising, 4-state Potts and 10-state Potts models in single-cluster Monte Carlo simulations on quenched ensembles of planar, trivalent Phi3 random graphs, which we use as an example of relevant quenched connectivity disorder. We employ a novel application of scaling techniques to the cumulative probability distribution of the autocorrelation times for both the energy and magnetisation in order to discern non-self-averaging. Although the specific results discussed here are for quenched random graphs, the method has quite general a…
Using a weak-disorder scheme and real-space renormalization-group techniques, we obtain analytical results for the critical behavior of various q-state Potts models with correlated disordered exchange interactions along d1 of d spatial dimensions on hierarchical (Migdal-Kadanoff) lattices. Our results indicate qualitative differences between the cases d-d1=1 (for which we find nonphysical random fixed points, suggesting the existence of nonperturbative fixed distributions) and d-d1>1 (for which we do find acceptable perturbartive random fixed points), in agreement with previous numerical calcu…
We obtain the exact scale invariant scattering solutions for two-dimensional field theories with replicated permutational symmetry $\mathbb{S}_q$. After sending to zero the number of replicas they correspond to the renormalization group fixed points of the $q$-state Potts model with quenched disorder. We find that all solutions with non-zero disorder possess $q$-independent sectors, pointing to superuniversality (i.e. symmetry independence) of some critical exponents. The solution corresponding to the random bond ferromagnet, for which disorder vanishes as $q\to 2$, allows for superuniversalit…
The first-order phase transition of the two-dimensional eight-state Potts model is shown to be rounded when long-range correlated disorder is coupled to energy density. Critical exponents are estimated by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. In contrast to uncorrelated disorder, a violation of the hyperscaling relation $γ/ν=d-2x_σ$ is observed. Even though the system is not frustrated, disorder fluctuations are strong enough to cause this violation in the very same way as in the 3D random-field Ising model. In the thermal sector too, evidence is given for such violation in the two hyp…
A Griffiths phase has recently been observed by Monte Carlo simulations in the 2D $q$-state Potts model with strongly correlated quenched random couplings. In particular, the magnetic susceptibility was shown to diverge algebraically with the lattice size in a broad range of temperatures. However, only relatively small lattice sizes could be considered so one can wonder whether this Griffiths phase will not shrink and collapse into a single point, the critical point, as the lattice size is increased to much larger values. In this paper, the 2D eight-state Potts model is numerically studied for…
We investigate a 4-state ferromagnetic Potts model with a special type of geometrical frustration on a three dimensional diamond lattice by means of Wang-Landau Monte Carlo simulation motivated by a peculiar structural phase transition found in $β$-pyrochlore oxide KOs$_2$O$_6$. We find that this model undergoes unconventional first-order phase transition; half of the spins in the system order in a two dimensional hexagonal-sheet-like structure, while the remaining half stay disordered. The ordered sheets and the disordered sheets stack one after another. We obtain a fairly large residual entr…
To understand the origin of the dynamical transition, between high temperature exponential relaxation and low temperature nonexponential relaxation, that occurs well above the static transition in glassy systems, a frustrated spin model, with and without disorder, is considered. The model has two phase transitions, the lower being a standard spin glass transition (in presence of disorder) or fully frustrated Ising (in absence of disorder), and the higher being a Potts transition. Monte Carlo results clarify that in the model with (or without) disorder the precursor phenomena are related to the…
We study the stochastically driven conserved Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (CKPZ) equation with quenched disorders. Short-ranged quenched disorders is found to be a relevant perturbation on the pure CKPZ equation at one dimension, and as a result, a new universality class different from pure CKPZ equation appears to emerge. At higher dimensions, quenched disorder turns out to be ineffective to influence the universal scaling. This results in the asymptotic long wavelength scaling to be given by the linear theory, a scenario identical with the pure CKPZ equation. For sufficiently long-ranged quenched dis…
The $q$-state Potts model with a long-range correlated disorder is studied by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations for $q=2,4,8$ and 16. Evidence is given of the existence of a Griffiths phase, where the thermodynamic quantities display an algebraic Finite-Size Scaling, in a finite range of temperatures around the self-dual point. The critical exponents are shown to depend on both the temperature and the exponent of the algebraic decay of disorder correlations, but not on the number of states of the Potts model. The mechanism leading to the violation of hyperscaling relations is observ…
Quenched disorder affects significantly the behavior of phase transitions. The Imry-Ma-Aizenman-Wehr-Berker argument prohibits first-order or discontinuous transitions and their concomitant phase coexistence in low-dimensional equilibrium systems in the presence of random fields. Instead, discontinuous transitions become rounded or even continuous once disorder is introduced. Here we show that phase coexistence and first-order phase transitions are also precluded in nonequilibrium low-dimensional systems with quenched disorder: discontinuous transitions in two-dimensional systems with absorbin…
We investigate the effects of quenched disorder on the coherent response in a driven system of coupled oscillators. In particular, the interplay between quenched noise and periodic driving is explored, with particular attention to the possibility of resonance. The phase velocity is examined as the response of the system; revealed is the enhancement of the fraction of oscillators locked to the periodic driving, displaying resonance behavior. It is thus concluded that resonance behavior may also be induced by quenched disorder which does not have time-dependent correlations.
We elucidate the effects of chiral quenched disorder on the scaling properties of pure systems by considering a reduced model that is a variant of the quenched disordered cubic anisotropic O(N) model near its second order phase transition. A generic short-ranged Gaussian disorder distribution is considered. For distributions not invariant under spatial inversion ({hence chiral}), the scaling exponents are found to depend continuously on a model parameter that describes the extent of inversion symmetry breaking. Experimental and phenomenological implications of our results are discussed.
Phase transitions induced by varying the strength of disorder in the large-q state Potts model in 3d are studied by analytical and numerical methods. By switching on the disorder the transition stays of first order, but different thermodynamical quantities display essential singularities. Only for strong enough disorder the transition will be soften into a second-order one, in which case the ordered phase becomes non-homogeneous at large scales, while the non-correlated sites percolate the sample. In the critical regime the critical exponents are found universal: β/ν=0.60(2) and ν=0.73(1).
We consider a Potts model diluted by fully frustrated Ising spins. The model corresponds to a fully frustrated Potts model with variables having an integer absolute value and a sign. This model presents precursor phenomena of a glass transition in the high-temperature region. We show that the onset of these phenomena can be related to a thermodynamic transition. Furthermore this transition can be mapped onto a percolation transition. We numerically study the phase diagram in 2 dimensions (2D) for this model with frustration and {\em without} disorder and we compare it to the phase diagram of $…
We study the kinetics of the two-dimensional q > 4-state Potts model after a shallow quench slightly below the critical temperature and above the pseudo spinodal. We use numerical methods and we focus on intermediate values of q, 4 < q < 100. We show that, initially, the system evolves as if it were quenched to the critical temperature. The further decay from the metastable state occurs by nucleation of k out of the q possible phases. For a given quench temperature, k is a logarithmically increasing function of the system size. This unusual finite size dependence is a consequence of a scaling …
With dynamic Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the continuous phase transition in the three-dimensional three-state random-bond Potts model. We propose a useful technique to deal with the strong corrections to the dynamic scaling form. The critical point, static exponents $β$ and $ν$, and dynamic exponent $z$ are accurately determined. Particularly, the results support that the exponent $ν$ satisfies the lower bound $ν\geqslant 2/d$.
Inspired by the recent results on totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes on a periodic lattice with short-ranged quenched hopping rates [A. Haldar, A. Basu, Phys Rev Research 2, 043073 (2020)], we study the universal scaling properties of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation with short-ranged quenched columnar disorder in general d-dimensions. We show that there are generic propagating modes in the system that have their origin in the quenched disorder and make the system anisotropic. We argue that the presence of the propagating modes actually make the effects of the quenched disorde…
We revisit the effects of short-ranged random quenched disorder on the universal scaling properties of the classical $N$-vector model with cubic anisotropy. We set up the nonconserved relaxational dynamics of the model, and study the universal dynamic scaling near the second order phase transition. We extract the critical exponents and the dynamic exponent in a one-loop dynamic renormalisation group calculation with short-ranged isotropic disorder. We show that the dynamics near a critical point is generically slower when the quenched disorder is relevant than when it is not, independent of wh…
We consider the A + A --> emptyset reaction, where the transport of the particles is given by Levy flights in a quenched random potential. With a common literature model of the disorder, the random potential can only increase the rate of reaction. With a model of the disorder that obeys detailed balance, however, the rate of reaction initially increases and then decreases as a function of the disorder strength. The physical behavior obtained with this second model is in accord with that for reactive turbulent flow, indicating that Levy flight statistics can model aspects of turbulent fluid tra…
The two-dimensional q-state Potts model is subjected to a Z_q symmetric disorder that allows for the existence of a Nishimori line. At q=2, this model coincides with the +/- J random-bond Ising model. For q>2, apart from the usual pure and zero-temperature fixed points, the ferro/paramagnetic phase boundary is controlled by two critical fixed points: a weak disorder point, whose universality class is that of the ferromagnetic bond-disordered Potts model, and a strong disorder point which generalizes the usual Nishimori point. We numerically study the case q=3, tracing out the phase diagram and…
It is investigated how a spatial quenched disorder modifies the dynamics of coupled map lattices. The disorder is introduced via the presence or absence of coupling terms among lattice sites. Two nonlinear maps have been considered embodying two paradigmatic dynamics. The Miller and Huse map can be associated with an Ising-like dynamics, whereas the logistic coupled maps is a prototype of a non trivial collective dynamics. Various indicators quantifying the overall behavior, demonstrates that even a small amount of spatial disorder is capable to alter the dynamics found for purely ordered case…
We consider the semi-infinite (q)-state Potts model. We prove, for large (q), the existence of a first order surface phase transition between the ordered phase and the the so-called "new low temperature phase" predicted in \cite{Li}, in which the bulk is ordered whereas the surface is disordered.
We investigate the continuum q-Potts model at its transition point from the disordered to the ordered regime, with particular emphasis on the coexistence of disordered and ordered phases in the high-q case. We argue that occurrence of phase transition can be seen as percolation in the related random cluster representation, similarly to the lattice Potts model, and investigate the typical structure of clusters for high q. We also report on numerical simulations in two dimensions using a continuum version of the Swendsen-Wang algorithm, compare the results with earlier simulations which used the…
Recent experimental findings on anomalous diffusion have demanded novel models that combine annealed (temporal) and quenched (spatial or static) disorder mechanisms. The comb-model is a simplified description of diffusion on percolation clusters, where the comb-like structure mimics quenched disorder mechanisms and yields a subdiffusive regime. Here we extend the comb-model to simultaneously account for quenched and annealed disorder mechanisms. To do so, we replace usual derivatives in the comb diffusion equation by different fractional time-derivative operators and the conventional comb-like…
We analyse in this article the critical behavior of $M$ $q_1$-state Potts models coupled to $N$ $q_2$-state Potts models ($q_1,q_2\in [2..4]$) with and without disorder. The technics we use are based on perturbed conformal theories. Calculations have been performed at two loops. We already find some interesting situations in the pure case for some peculiar values of $M$ and $N$ with new tricritical points. When adding weak disorder, the results we obtain tend to show that disorder makes the models decouple. Therefore, no relations emerges, at a perturbation level, between for example the disor…
We study the equilibrium properties of an Ising model on a disordered random network where the disorder can be quenched or annealed. The network consists of four-fold coordinated sites connected via variable length one-dimensional chains. Our emphasis is on nonuniversal properties and we consider the transition temperature and other equilibrium thermodynamic properties, including those associated with one dimensional fluctuations arising from the chains. We use analytic methods in the annealed case, and a Monte Carlo simulation for the quenched disorder. Our objective is to study the differenc…
In this lecture we present an overview of the physics of irreversible fractal growth process, with particular emphasis on a class of models characterized by {\em quenched disorder}. These models exhibit self-organization, with critical properties developing spontaneously, without the fine tuning of external parameters. This situation is different from the usual critical phenomena, and requires the introduction of new theoretical methods. Our approach to these problems is based on two concepts, the Fixed Scale Transformation, and the quenched-stochastic transformation, or Run Time Statistics (R…
We extend to quenched disordered systems the variational scheme for real space renormalization group calculations that we recently introduced for homogeneous spin Hamiltonians. When disorder is present our approach gives access to the flow of the renormalized Hamiltonian distribution, from which one can compute the critical exponents if the correlations of the renormalized couplings retain finite range. Key to the variational approach is the bias potential found by minimizing a convex functional in statistical mechanics. This potential reduces dramatically the Monte Carlo relaxation time in la…
We develop the hydrodynamic theory for number conserving asymmetric exclusion processes with short-range random quenched disordered hopping rates, which is one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi- Zhang (KPZ) equation with quenched columnar disorder. We show that when the system is away from half-filling, the universal spatio-temporal scaling of the density fluctuations is indistinguishable from its pure counterpart, with the model belonging to the one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. In contrast, close to half-filling, the quenched disorder is relevant, leading to a new universality …
When the two dimensional q-color Potts model in the square lattice is quenched at zero temperature with Glauber dynamics, the energy decreases in time following an Allen-Cahn power law, and the system converges to a phase with energy higher than the ground state energy after an arbitrary large time when q>4. At low but finite temperature, it cesses to obey the power-law regime and orders after a very long time, which increases with q, and before which it performs a domain growth process which tends to be slower as q increases. We briefly present and comment numerical results on the ordering at…
We study the effects of distinct types of quenched disorder in the contact process (CP) with a competitive dynamics on bipartite sublattices. In the model, the particle creation depends on its first and second neighbors and the extinction increases according to the local density. The clean (without disorder) model exhibits three phases: inactive (absorbing), active symmetric and active asymmetric, where the latter exhibits distinct sublattice densities. These phases are separated by continuous transitions; the phase diagram is reentrant. By performing mean field analysis and Monte Carlo simula…
We study the critical behavior of the random q-state Potts model in the large-q limit on the diamond hierarchical lattice with an effective dimensionality $d_{\rm eff} > 2$. By varying the temperature and the strength of the frustration the system has a phase transition line between the paramagnetic and the ferromagnetic phases which is controlled by four different fixed points. According to our renormalization group study the phase-boundary in the vicinity of the multicritical point is self-similar, it is well represent ed by a logarithmic spiral. We expect infinite number of reentrances in t…
We study using Monte Carlo simulations the finite-size scaling behavior of the interfacial adsorption of the two-dimensional square-lattice $q$-states Potts model. We consider the pure and random-bond versions of the Potts model for $q = 3,4,5,8$ and $q = 10$, thus probing the interfacial properties at the originally continuous, weak, and strong first-order phase transitions. For the pure systems our results support the early scaling predictions for the size dependence of the interfacial adsorption at both first- and second-order phase transitions. For the disordered systems, the interfacial a…
Phase transitions abound in nature and society, and, from species extinction to stock market collapse, their prediction is of widespread importance. In earlier work we showed that Global Transfer Entropy, a general measure of information flow, was found to peak away from the transition on the disordered side for the Ising model, a canonical second-order transition. Here we show that (a) global transfer entropy also peaks on the disordered side of the transition of finite first-order transitions, i.e., those which have finite latent heat and no correlation length divergence, such as ecology dyn…
We study the 3D Disordered Potts Model with p=5 and p=6. Our numerical simulations (that severely slow down for increasing p) detect a very clear spin glass phase transition. We evaluate the critical exponents and the critical value of the temperature, and we use known results at lower $p$ values to discuss how they evolve for increasing p. We do not find any sign of the presence of a transition to a ferromagnetic regime.
We comment on a recent Letter by Braunstein and Buceta [PRL vol.81, 630 (1998)], in which a novel equation has been proposed to describe the dynamics of interfaces in the presence of quenched disorder. We argue that the ansatz Braunstein and Buceta presented is just an effective description of the very short times regime and has no significance for the macroscopic (large scale) behaviour of the interface. We calculate an expression for the short time behaviour of the interface that is valid for any q (and not only at q_c).
Local diffusion coefficients in disordered materials such as living cells are highly heterogeneous. Quenched disorder is utilized substantially to study such complex systems, whereas its analytical treatment is difficult to handle. We consider finite systems with quenched disorder in order to investigate the effects of sample disorder fluctuations and confinement on single-particle diffusivity. While the system is ergodic in a single disorder realization, the time-averaged mean squared displacement depends on the disorder, i.e., the system is ergodic but non-self-averaging. We find that the in…
A single sandpile model with quenched random toppling matrices captures the crucial features of different models of self-organized criticality. With symmetric matrices avalanche statistics falls in the multiscaling BTW universality class. In the asymmetric case the simple scaling of the Manna model is observed. The presence or absence of a precise toppling balance between the amount of sand released by a toppling site and the total quantity the same site receives when all its neighbors topple once determines the appropriate universality class.
The critical behavior in the short-time dynamics for the random-bond Potts ferromagnet in two-dimensions is investigated by short-time dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. The numerical calculations show that this dynamic approach can be applied efficiently to study the scaling characteristic, which is used to estimate the critical exponents theta, beta/nu and z for the quenched disorered systems from the power-law behavior of the kth moments of magnetizations.
We report a transfer matrix study of the random bond $q-$state Potts model in the vicinity of the Ising model $q=2$. We draw attention to a precise determination of magnetic scaling dimensions in order to compare with perturbative results. Universality is checked by the computation of the spin-spin correlation function decay exponent obtained with different types of probability distributions of the coupling strengths. Our numerical data, compared to perturbative results for the second moment of the correlation function, obtained with both replica symmetry and replica symmetry breaking schemes,…
We examine a global disorder transition when identifying community structure in an arbitrary complex network. Earlier, we illustrated [Phil. Mag. 92, 406 (2012)] that "community detection" (CD) generally exhibits disordered (or unsolvable) and ordered (solvable) phases of both high and low computational complexity along with corresponding transitions from regular to chaotic dynamics in derived systems. Using an exact generalized dimensional reduction inequality, multivariate Tutte polynomials, and other considerations, we illustrate how increasing the number of communities q emulates increasin…
We show that the order-disorder phase transition in the three state Potts ferromagnet on a square lattice is driven by a coupled proliferation of vortices and domain walls. Raising the vortex core energy above a certain value decouples the proliferation and splits the transition into two. The phase between the two transitions exhibits an emergent U(1) symmetry and quasi long range order. Lowering the core energy also splits the order-disorder transition but the proliferation does not decouple and a vortex lattice appears as the intermediate phase.
This work focuses on quantitative representation of transport in systems with quenched disorder. Explicit mapping of the quenched trap model to continuous time random walk is presented. Linear temporal transformation: $t\to t/Λ^{1/α}$ for transient process on translationally invariant lattice, in the sub-diffusive regime, is sufficient for asymptotic mapping. Exact form of the constant $Λ^{1/α}$ is established. Disorder averaged position probability density function for quenched trap model is obtained and analytic expressions for the diffusion coefficient and drift are provided.
We study the two-dimensional Potts model on the square lattice in the presence of quenched random-bond impurities. For q>4 the first-order transitions of the pure model are softened due to the impurities, and we determine the resulting universality classes by combining transfer matrix data with conformal invariance. The magnetic exponent beta/nu varies continuously with q, assuming non-Ising values for q>4, whereas the correlation length exponent nu is numerically consistent with unity. We present evidence for the correctness of a formerly proposed phase diagram, unifying pure, percolative and…
The phase transition in the q-state Potts model with homogeneous ferromagnetic couplings is strongly first order for large q, while is rounded in the presence of quenched disorder. Here we study this phenomenon on different two-dimensional lattices by using the fact that the partition function of the model is dominated by a single diagram of the high-temperature expansion, which is calculated by an efficient combinatorial optimization algorithm. For a given finite sample with discrete randomness the free energy is a pice-wise linear function of the temperature, which is rounded after averaging…
We present an experimental study of the influence of quenched disorder on the distribution of flux avalanches in type-II superconductors. In the presence of much quenched disorder, the avalanche sizes are power-law distributed and show finite size scaling, as expected from self-organized criticality (SOC). Furthermore, the shape of the avalanches is observed to be fractal. In the absence of quenched disorder, a preferred size of avalanches is observed and avalanches are smooth. These observations indicate that a certain minimum amount of disorder is necessary for SOC behavior. We relate these …
The effect of quenched (frozen) orientational disorder on the collective motion of active particles is analyzed. We find that, as with annealed disorder (Langevin noise), active polar systems are far more robust against quenched disorder than their equilibrium counterparts. In particular, long ranged order (i.e., the existence of a non-zero average velocity $\langle {\bf v} \rangle$) persists in the presence of quenched disorder even in spatial dimensions $d=3$, while it is destroyed even by arbitrarily weak disorder in $d \le 4$ in equilibrium systems. Furthermore, in $d=2$, quasi-long-ranged…
We discuss recently generated high-temperature series expansions for the free energy and the susceptibility of random-bond q-state Potts models on hypercubic lattices. Using the star-graph expansion technique quenched disorder averages can be calculated exactly for arbitrary uncorrelated coupling distributions while keeping the disorder strength p as well as the dimension d as symbolic parameters. We present analyses of the new series for the susceptibility of the Ising (q=2) and 4-state Potts model in three dimensions up to order 19 and 18, respectively, and compare our findings with results …
We derive high-temperature series expansions for the free energy and the susceptibility of random-bond $q$-state Potts models on hypercubic lattices using a star-graph expansion technique. This method enables the exact calculation of quenched disorder averages for arbitrary uncorrelated coupling distributions. Moreover, we can keep the disorder strength $p$ as well as the dimension $d$ as symbolic parameters. By applying several series analysis techniques to the new series expansions, one can scan large regions of the $(p,d)$ parameter space for any value of $q$. For the bond-diluted 4-state P…
With quenched disorder, we introduce two-dimensional active nematics suspended in an incompressible fluid. We write the coarse-grained hydrodynamic equations of motion for slow variables, viz. density, orientation and flow fields. The quenched disorder is introduced such that it interacts with the local orientation at every point with some strength. Disorder strength is tuned from zero to large values. We numerically study the defect dynamics and system's kinetics and find that the finite disorder slows the ordering. The presence of fluid induces large fluctuation in the orientation field, fur…
We investigate the effects of quenched randomness on the universal properties of a two-temperature lattice gas. The disorder modifies the dynamical transition rates of the system in an anisotropic fashion, giving rise to a new fixed point. We determine the associated scaling form of the structure factor, quoting critical exponents to two-loop order in an expansion around the upper critical dimension d$_c=7$. The close relationship with another quenched disorder fixed point, discovered recently in this model, is discussed.
