In this note we are going to prove that if we have a fibration of smooth projective varieties $X\to S$ over a surface $S$ such that $X$ is of dimension four and that the geometric generic fiber has finite dimensional motive and the first étale cohomology of the geometric generic fiber with respect to $\mathbb {Q}_l$ coefficients is zero and the second étale cohomology is spanned by divisors, then $A^3(X)$ (codimension three algebraically trivial cycles modulo rational equivalence) is dominated by finitely many copies of $A_0(S)$. Meaning that there exists finitely many correspondences $Γ_i$ on $S\times X$, such that $\sum_i Γ_i$ is surjective from $\oplus A^2(S)$ to $A^3(X)$.
We prove an integrality property of the Chern character with values in Chow groups. As a consequence we obtain, for a prime number p, a construction of the p-1 first homological Steenrod operations on Chow groups modulo p and p-primary torsion, over an arbitrary field. We provide applications to the study of correspondences between algebraic varieties.
A presentation of a degree $d$ form in $n+1$ variables as the sum of homogenous elements ``essentially'' involving $n$ variables is called a {\em codimension one decomposition}. Codimension one decompositions are introduced and the related Waring Problem is stated and solved. Natural schemes describing the codimension one decompositions of a generic form are defined. Dimension and degree formulae for these schemes are derived when the number of summands is the minimal one; in the zero dimensional case the scheme is showed to be reduced. These results are obtained by studying the Chow variety $…
Let $X$ be a surface with geometric genus and irregularity zero which is defined over a number field $K$. Let $\mathscr{X}$ denote a smooth spread of $X$ over the spectrum of a Zariski open subset in the spectrum of the ring of integers and $A^2$ stands for the group of algebraically trivial cycles on schemes modulo rational equivalence. If $j^*: A^2(\mathscr{X})\to A^2(X)$ be the flat pull-back corresponding to the embedding $j:X\hookrightarrow \mathscr{X}$ then we prove that $\im(j^*)(K)/A^2(\mathscr{X})(K)$ is a torsion group. Here $\im(j^*)(K)$, $A^2(\mathscr{X})(K)$ stand for the cycles f…
Using the construction of Colliot-Thélène and Ojanguren, we exhibit an example of a smooth projective geometrically rational variety X defined over a finite field F_p with an algebraic closure \bar F_p and the absolute Galois group G, such that the group H^3_nr(X, Z/2) is nonzero and the map CH^2(X)\to CH^2(\bar X)^G is not surjective.
The quadric $\operatorname{Q}_{2n}$ is the ${\mathbb Z}$-scheme defined by the equation $\sum_{i=1}^n x_i y_i = z(1-z)$. We show that $\operatorname{Q}_{2n}$ is a homogeneous space for the split reductive group scheme $\operatorname{SO}_{2n+1}$ over ${\mathbb Z}$. The quadric $\operatorname{Q}_{2n}$ is known to have the ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy type of a motivic sphere and the identification as a homogeneous space allows us to give a characteristic independent affine representability statement for motivic spheres. This last observation allows us to give characteristic independent comparison re…
In the present paper, we provide general bounds for the torsion in the codimension 2 Chow groups of the products of projective homogeneous surfaces. In particular, we determine the torsion for the product of four Pfister quadric surfaces and the maximal torsion for the product of three Severi-Brauer surfaces. We also find an upper bound for the torsion of the product of three quadric surfaces with the same discriminant.
Using determinant functor, we describe a natural transformation from local Hilbert functor to K-theoretic cycle groups of codimension one, which were variants of Balmer's tensor triangular Chow groups. This enables us to answers a question of Bloch on infinitesimal deformation of Chow groups of divisors.
In this exposition we understand when the natural map from the Chow variety parametrizing codimension $p$ cycles on a smooth projective variety $X$ to the Chow group $\CH^p(X)$ is surjective. We derive some consequences when the map is surjective.
We prove that the general quartic double solid with $k\leq 7$ nodes does not admit a Chow theoretic decomposition of the diagonal, or equivalently has a nontrivial universal ${\rm CH}_0$ group. The same holds if we replace in this statement "Chow theoretic" by "cohomological". In particular, it is not stably rational. We also prove that the general quartic double solid with seven nodes does not admit a universal codimension 2 cycle parameterized by its intermediate Jacobian, and even does not admit a parametrization with rationally connected fibres of its Jacobian by a family of 1-cycles. This…
This small note is about Plücker hyperplane sections $X$ of the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}(3,V_{10})$. Inspired by the analogy with cubic fourfolds, we prove that the only non-trivial Chow group of $X$ is generated by Grassmannians of type $\operatorname{Gr}(3,W_{6})$ contained in $X$. We also prove that a certain subring of the Chow ring of $X$ (containing all intersections of positive-codimensional subvarieties) injects into cohomology.
New formulas are given for Chow forms, discriminants and resultants arising from (not necessarily normal) toric varieties of codimension 2. Exact descriptions are also given for the secondary polygon and for the Newton polygon of the discriminant.
The Chow rings of hyperKähler varieties are conjectured to have a particularly rich structure. In this paper, we focus on the locally complete family of double EPW sextics and establish some properties of their Chow rings. First we prove a Beauville-Voisin type theorem for zero-cycles on double EPW sextics; precisely, we show that the codimension-4 part of the subring of the Chow ring of a double EPW sextic generated by divisors, the Chern classes and codimension-2 cycles invariant under the anti-symplectic covering involution has rank one. Second, for double EPW sextics birational to the Hilb…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over a number field. Assuming $H^2(X,\mathcal O_X)=0,$ Colliot-Thélène and Raskind proved that the torsion subgroup $CH^2(X)_{tors}$ in the Chow group of cycles of codimension $2$ is finite.…
Using a codimension-$1$ algebraic cycle obtained from the Poincaré line bundle, Beauville defined the Fourier transform on the Chow groups of an abelian variety $A$ and showed that the Fourier transform induces a decomposition of the Chow ring $CH^*(A)$. By using a codimension-$2$ algebraic cycle representing the Beauville--Bogomolov class, we give evidence for the existence of a similar decomposition for the Chow ring of hyperKähler varieties deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of length-$2$ subschemes on a K3 surface. We indeed establish the existence of such a decomposition for the…
---------- We study 2-cycles of a smooth cubic hypersurface of dimension 5. We show that the Griffiths group of 2-cycles is trivial and the Abel-Jacobi map induces an isomorphism between…
We show that the span of special cycles in the $r$th Chow group of a Shimura variety of orthogonal type is finite dimensional, if $r < 5$. As our main tool, we develop the theory of Jacobi forms with rational index $M \in \Mat{N}(\QQ)$.
We prove that the group of normalized cohomological invariants of degree 3 modulo the subgroup of semidecomposable invariants of a semisimple split linear algebraic group G is isomorphic to the torsion part of the Chow group of codimension 2 cycles of the respective versal G-flag. In particular, if G is simple, we show that this factor group is isomorphic to the group of indecomposable invariants of G. As an application, we construct nontrivial cohomological classes for indecomposable central simple algebras.
In this paper, we consider the moduli space $\cSU_C(r,\cO_C)$ of rank $r$ semistable vector bundles with trivial determinant on a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g$. When the rank $r=2$, F. Kirwan constructed a smooth log resolution $\ov{X}\rar \cSU_C(2,\cO_C)$. Based on earlier work of M. Kerr and J. Lewis, Lewis explains in the Appendix the notion of a relative Chow group (w.r.to the normal crossing divisor), and a subsequent Abel-Jacobi map on the relative Chow group of null-homologous one cycles (tensored with $\Q$). This map takes values in the intermediate Jacobian of the compactly…
We extend an argument of S.Lichtenbaum involving codimension one cycles to higher codimensions and obtain a generalization of the well-known Picard-Brauer exact sequence for a smooth variety X. The resulting exact sequence connects the codimension n Chow group of X with a certain "Brauer-like" group.
In the present article we discuss an approach to cohomological invariants of algebraic groups over fields of characteristic zero based on the Morava $K$-theories, which are generalized oriented cohomology theories in the sense of Levine--Morel. We show that the second Morava $K$-theory detects the triviality of the Rost invariant and, more generally, relate the triviality of cohomological invariants and the splitting of Morava motives. We describe the Morava $K$-theory of generalized Rost motives, compute the Morava $K$-theory of some affine varieties, and characterize the powers of the fundam…
We prove that formal Fourier Jacobi expansions of degree 2 are Siegel modular forms. As a corollary, we deduce modularity of the generating function of special cycles of codimension 2, which were defined by Kudla. A second application is the proof of termination of an algorithm to compute Fourier expansions of arbitrary Siegel modular forms of degree 2. Combining both results enables us to compute relations of special cycles in the second Chow group.
We study maps from a smooth scheme to a motivic sphere in the Morel-Voevodsky ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy category, i.e., motivic cohomotopy sets. Following Borsuk, we show that, in the presence of suitable hypotheses on the dimension of the source, motivic cohomotopy sets can be equipped with functorial abelian group structures. We then explore links between motivic cohomotopy groups, Euler class groups à la Nori-Bhatwadekar-Sridharan and Chow-Witt groups. We show that, again under suitable hypotheses on the base field $k$, if $X$ is a smooth affine $k$-variety of dimension $d$, then the Euler c…
In this article we prove a fundamental inequality between Artin-Mazur heights and Yobuko heights of certain proper log smooth schemes of Cartier type over a fine log scheme whose underlying scheme is the spectrum of a perfect field $κ$ of characteristic $p>0$. We also prove that the cohomologies of Witt-sheaves of them are finitely generated ${\cal W}(κ)$-modules if the Yobuko heights of them are finite. As an application, we prove that the $p$-primary torsion parts of the Chow groups of codimension $2$ of proper smooth threefolds over $κ$ is of finite cotype if the Yobuko heights of them are …
A theorem of Esnault, Srinivas and Viehweg asserts that if the Chow group of 0-cycles of a smooth complete complex variety decomposes, then the top-degree coherent cohomology group decomposes similarly. In this note, we prove a similar statement for Chow groups of arbitrary codimension, provided the variety satisfies the Lefschetz standard conjecture.
We study the semi-decomposable invariants of a split semisimple group and their extension to a split reductive group by using the torsion in the codimension $2$ Chow groups of a product of Severi-Brauer varieties. In particular, for any $n\geq 2$ we completely determine the degree $3$ invariants of a split semisimple group, the quotient of $(\operatorname{\mathbf{SL}}_{2})^{n}$ by its maximal central subgroup, as well as of the corresponding split reductive group. We also provide an example illustrating that a modification of our method can be applied to find the semi-decomposable invariants o…
Let X be a smooth projective variety of dimension n. If $p+q=n+1$ then Bloch has defined a ${\bf G}_m$-biextension E over the product of the Chow groups $CH^p_0(X)$ and $CH^q_0(X)$ of homologically trivial cycles. We prove that E is the pullback of the Poincare biextension over the product of intermediate Jacobians in characteristic zero. This is used to study various equivalence relations for algebraic cycles. In particular we reprove Murres result that Griffiths conjecture holds for codimension two cycles, i.e. every codim. two cycle algebraically and incidence equivalent to zero has torsion…
In \cite{botero}, a top intersection product of toric b-divisors on a smooth complete toric variety is defined. It is shown that a nef toric b-divisor corresponds to a convex set and that its top intersection number equals the volume of this convex set. The goal of this article is to extend this result and define an intersection product of sufficiently positive toric b-classes of arbitrary codimension. For this, we extend the polytope algebra of McMullen (\cite{McM1}, \cite{McM2}, \cite{McM3}) to the so called \emph{convex-set algebra} and we show that it embeds in the toric b-Chow group. In t…
This note is about certain locally complete families of Calabi-Yau varieties constructed by Cynk and Hulek, and certain varieties constructed by Schreieder. We prove that the cycle class map on the Chow ring of powers of these varieties admits a section, and that these varieties admit a multiplicative self-dual Chow-Kuenneth decomposition. As a consequence of both results, we prove that the subring of the Chow ring generated by divisors, Chern classes, and intersections of two cycles of positive codimension injects into cohomology, via the cycle class map. We also prove that the small diagonal…
In this paper, we give a recipe for producing infinitely many non-divisible codimension $2$ cycles on a product of two or more very general Abelian varieties. In the process, we introduce the notion of "field of definition" for cycles in the Chow group modulo (a power of) a prime. We show that for a quite general class of codimension $2$ cycles we call "primitive cycles," the field of definition is a ramified extension of the function field of a modular variety. This ramification allows us to use Nori's isogeny method \cite{N} (modified by Totaro \cite{T}) to produce infinitely many non-divisi…
The Chow groups of codimension-p algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on a smooth algebraic variety X have steadfastly resisted the efforts of algebraic geometers to fathom their structure. This book explores a "linearization" approach to this problem, focusing on the infinitesimal structure of the Chow groups near their identity elements. This method was adumbrated in recent work of Mark Green and Phillip Griffiths. Similar topics have been explored by Bloch, Stienstra, Hesselholt, Van der Kallen, and others. A famous formula of Bloch expresses the Chow groups as Zariski sheaf cohomol…
We express the kernel of Griffiths' Abel-Jacobi map by using the inductive limit of Deligne cohomology in the generalized sense (i.e. the absolute Hodge cohomology of A. Beilinson). This generalizes a result of L. Barbieri-Viale and V. Srinivas in the surface case. We then show that the Abel-Jacobi map for codimension 2 cycles and the Albanese map are bijective if a general hyperplane section is a surface for which Bloch's conjecture is proved. In certain cases we verify Nori's conjecture on the Griffiths group. We also prove a weak Lefschetz-type theorem for (higher) Chow groups, generalize a…
We prove relations between fractional linear cycles in Bloch's integral cubical higher Chow complex in codimension two of number fields, which correspond to functional equations of the dilogarithm. These relations suffice, as we shall demonstrate with a few examples, to write down enough relations in Bloch's integral higher Chow group CH^2(F,3) for certain number fields F to detect torsion cycles. Using the regulator map to Deligne cohomology, one can check the non-triviality of the torsion cycles thus obtained. Using this combination of methods, we obtain explicit higher Chow cycles generatin…
A main theme of the paper is a conjecture of Bloch-Kato on the image of $p$-adic regulator maps for a proper smooth variety $X$ over an algebraic number field $k$. The conjecture for a regulator map of particular degree and weight is related to finiteness of two arithmetic objects: One is the $p$-primary torsion part of the Chow group in codimension 2 of $X$. Another is an unramified cohomology group of $X$. As an application, for a regular model ${\mathscr X}$ of $X$ over the integer ring of $k$, we show an injectivity result on torsion of a cycle class map from the Chow group in codimension …
In this note, we would like to propose a suitable extension of the arithmetic Chow group of codimension one, in which the Hodge index theorem holds. We also prove an arithmetic analogue of Bogomolov's instability theorem for rank 2 vector bundles on arbitrary regular projective arithmetic varieties.
We study certain triangulated categories of $K$-motives $DK(-)$ over a wide class of base schemes, and define certain "weights" for them. We relate the weights of particular $K$-motives to (negative) homotopy invariant $K$-groups (tensored by $\mathbb{Z}[S^{-1}]$ for $S$ being the set of "non-invertible primes") $\mathcal{K}_*(-)$. Our results yield a (new) result on the vanishing of $\mathcal{K}_i(-)$ and of relative $\mathcal{K}$-groups for $i$ being "too negative"; this statement is closely related to a question of Ch. Weibel. We also prove that $\mathcal{K}_i(-)$ for $i<0$ is "supported in…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a finite field $\F$. We discuss the unramified cohomology group $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$. Several conjectures put together imply that this group is finite. For certain classes of threefolds, $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$ actually vanishes. It is an open question whether this holds true for arbitrary threefolds. For a threefold $X$ equipped with a fibration onto a curve $C$, the generic fibre of which is a smooth projective surface $V$ over the global field $\F(C)$, the vanishing of $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$ together with the Tate conjecture for divisors on $X$ impl…
Let $X$ be a hyperkähler variety. Beauville has conjectured that a certain subring of the Chow ring of $X$ should inject into cohomology. This note proposes a similar conjecture for the ring of algebraic cycles on $X$ modulo algebraic equivalence: a certain subring (containing divisors and codimension $2$ cycles) should inject into cohomology. We present some evidence for this conjecture.
In this note, we consider special algebraic cycles on the Shimura variety S associated to a quadratic space V over a totally real field F, |F:\Q|=d, of signature ((m,2)^{d_+},(m+2,0)^{d-d_+}), 1\le d_+<d. For each n, 1\le n\le m, there are special cycles Z(T) in S, of codimension nd_+, indexed by totally positive semi-definite matrices with coefficients in the ring of integers O_F. The generating series for the classes of these cycles in the cohomology group H^{2nd_+}(S) are Hilbert-Siegel modular forms of parallel weight m/2+1. One can form analogous generating series for the classes of the s…
Let $X$ be a projective algebraic manifold and let $CH^r(X)$ be the Chow group of algebraic cycles of codimension $r$ on $X$, modulo rational equivalence. Working with a candidate Bloch-Beilinson filtration $\{F^ν\}_{ν\geq 0}$ on $CH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q}$ due to the second author, we construct a space of arithmetic Hodge theoretic invariants $\nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$ and corresponding map $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν} : Gr_{F}^νCH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q} \to \nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$, and determine conditions on $X$ for which the kernel and image of $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν}$ are ``uncountably large''.
This article discusses the concept of rational equivalence in tropical geometry (and replaces the older and imperfect version arXiv:0811.2860). We give the basic definitions in the context of tropical varieties without boundary points and prove some basic properties. We then compute the "bounded" Chow groups of $\mathbb{R}^n$ by showing that they are isomorphic to the group of fan cycles. The main step in the proof is of independent interest: We show that every tropical cycle in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a sum of (translated) fan cycles. This also proves that the intersection ring of tropical cycles i…
In the first section of his seminal paper on height pairings, Beilinson constructed an $\ell$-adic height pairing for rational Chow groups of homologically trivial cycles of complementary codimension on smooth projective varieties over the function field of a curve over an algebraically closed field, and asked about an generalization to higher dimensional bases. In this paper we answer Beilinson's question by constructing a pairing for varieties defined over the function field of a smooth variety $B$ over an algebraically closed field, with values in the second $\ell$-adic cohomology group of …
We give a formalism of arithmetic mixed sheaves including the case of arithmetic mixed Hodge structures, and show the nonvanishing of certain higher extension groups, and also the nontriviality of the second Abel-Jacobi map for zero cycles on a smooth proper complex variety of any dimension under the existence of a nontrivial global two-form. For two codimensional cycles, the injectivity of the cycle map is reduced to that of the Abel-Jacobi map for smooth projective varieties over number fields. (This shows that Asakura's additional hypothesis is unnecessary). Here it is also possible to use …
This article surveys some recent work of the author on Hilbert modular fourfolds X. After some preliminaries on the cohomology and special, codimension 2 cycles Z on X of Hirzebruch-Zagier type, a proof of the Tate conjecture for X over abelian fields is exposed. It is followed by a description of a method to construct classes in the Bloch's Chow group CH^3(X,1) by using Hecke translates of the cycles Z as above with suitable intersections in translates of modular curves. The article ends with the introduction of a modular Gersten complex for a general Shimura variety X and the corresponding g…
