In algebraic geometry there is the notion of a height pairing of algebraic cycles, which lies at the confluence of arithmetic, Hodge theory and topology. After explaining a motivating example situation, we introduce new directions in this subject.
We give a new definition of higher arithmetic Chow groups for smooth projective varieties defined over a number field, which is similar to Gillet and Soulé's definition of arithmetic Chow groups. We also give a compact description of the intersection theory of such groups. A consequence of this theory is the definition of a height pairing between two higher algebraic cycles, of complementary dimensions, whose real regulator class is zero. We construct natural Green forms for special cycles in orthogonal and unitary Shimura varieties, in all codimensions, and, for compact Shimura varieties of type O(p,2) and U(p,1), we show that the resulting local archimedean height pairings are related to special values of derivatives of Siegel Eisentein series. A conjecture put forward by Kudla relates these derivatives to arithmetic intersections of special cycles, and our results settle the part of his conjecture involving local archimedean heights.

In this note, we investigate the Chern classes of flat bundles in the arithmetic Deligne Cohomology, introduced by Green-Griffiths, Asakura-Saito. We show nontriviality of the Chern classes in some cases and the proof also indicates that generic flat bundles (in its moduli space) can be expected to have nontrivial classes, which is in contrast with some Gauss-Manin systems.

In the present paper we find explicit formulas for the degrees of Heegner divisors on arithmetic quotients of the orthogonal group $\Orth(2,p)$ and for the integrals of certain automorphic Green's functions associated with Heegner divisors. In this paper we resolve the arithmetic analogues of standard conjectures for an arithmetic variety, which are proposed by Gillet and Soule, into original standard conjectures and similar conjectures for two cycle class groups. One is the homologically trivial cycles. This is well-known as conjectures about the height pairing raised by Beilinson. The other is the cycle class groups consisting of vertical cycles. We show that the conjectures for the above two cycle class groups with Grothendieck's standard conjectures imply their arithmetic analogues.
We show that the constructions done in part I generalize their classical counterparts: firstly, the classical Beilinson regulator is induced by the abstract Chern class map from $BGL$ to the Deligne cohomology spectrum. Secondly, Arakelov motivic cohomology is a generalization of arithmetic $K$-theory and arithmetic Chow groups. Finally, we give a conceptual explanation of the height pairing: it is given by the natural pairing of motivic homology and Arakelov motivic cohomology.
We study the Faltings height pairing of arithmetic Heegner divisors and CM cycles on Shimura varieties associated to orthogonal groups. We compute the Archimedian contribution to the height pairing and derive a conjecture relating the total pairing to the central derivative of a Rankin L-function. We prove the conjecture in certain cases where the Shimura variety has dimension 0, 1, or 2. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the Gross-Zagier formula.

We construct explicit examples of E_8 lattices occurring in arithmetic for which the natural Galois action is equal to the full group of automorphisms of the lattice, i.e., the Weyl group of E_8. In particular, we give explicit elliptic curves over Q(t) whose Mordell-Weil lattices are isomorphic to E_8 and have maximal Galois action. Our main objects of study are del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 over number fields. Generalizing work of Gross--Zagier and Schofer on singular moduli, we study the CM values of regularized theta lifts of harmonic Whittaker forms. We compute the archimedian part of the height pairing of arithmetic special divisors and CM cycles on Shimura varieties associated to certain quadratic spaces over an arbitrary totally real base field. As a special case, we obtain an explicit formula for the norms of the CM values of those meromorphic modular forms arising as regularized theta lifts of holomorphic Whittaker forms.
We introduce the p-adic analogue of Arakelov intersection theory on arithmetic surfaces. The intersection pairing in an extension of the p-adic height pairing for divisors of degree 0 in the form described by Coleman and Gross. It also uses Coleman integration and is related to work of Colmez on p-adic Green functions. We introduce the p-adic version of a metrized line bundle and define the metric on the determinant of its cohomology in the style of Faltings. It is possible to prove in this theory analogues of the Adjunction formula and the Riemann-Roch formula.

This article describes results of joint work with Michael Rapoport and Tonghai Yang. First, we construct an modular form ϕ(τ) of weight 3/2 valued in the arithmetic Chow group of the arithmetic surface M attached toa Shimura curve over Q. The q-expansion of this function is an analogue of the Hirzebruch-Zagier generating function for the cohomology classes of curves on a Hilbert modular surface. We study equivariant de Rham discriminants associated to arithmetic varieties which support a tame action by a finite group; we form these discriminants by endowing the de Rham cohomology with pairings arising from duality theory. Such equivariant discriminants are shown to break up naturally into a metric part and a signature part.
