Let $M$ be a closed spin manifold and let $N$ be a closed manifold. For maps $f\colon M\to N$ and Riemannian metrics $g$ on $M$ and $h$ on $N$, we consider the Dirac operator $D^f_{g,h}$ of the twisted Dirac bundle $ΣM\otimes_{\mathbb{R}} f^*TN$. To this Dirac operator one can associate an index in $KO^{-dim(M)}(pt)$. If $M$ is $2$-dimensional, one gets a lower bound for the dimension of the kernel of $D^f_{g,h}$ out of this index. We investigate the question whether this lower bound is obtained for generic tupels $(f,g,h)$.
$α$-Dirac-harmonic maps are variations of Dirac-harmonic maps, analogous to $α$-harmonic maps that were introduced by Sacks-Uhlenbeck to attack the existence problem for harmonic maps from surfaces. For $α>1$, the latter are known to satisfy a Palais-Smale condtion, and so, the technique of Sacks-Uhlenbeck consists in constructing $α$-harmonic maps for $α>1$ and then letting $α\to 1$. The extension of this scheme to Dirac-harmonic maps meets with several difficulties, and in this paper, we start attacking those. We first prove the existence of nontrivial perturbed $α$-Dirac-harmonic maps when …
We study the existence of harmonic maps and Dirac-harmonic maps from degenerating surfaces to non-positive curved manifold via the scheme of Sacks and Uhlenbeck. By choosing a suitable sequence of $α$-(Dirac-)harmonic maps from a sequence of suitable closed surfaces degenerating to a hyperbolic surface, we get the convergence and a cleaner energy identity under the uniformly bounded energy assumption. In this energy identity, there is no energy loss near the punctures. As an application, we obtain an existence result about (Dirac-)harmonic maps from degenerating (spin) surfaces. If the energie…
This paper provides a $K$-theoretic obstruction for higher kernel dimension for Dirac operators. For this we use a fibre-wise Dirac operator that gives rise to a family of Fredholm operators representing a class in topological $K$-theory. Then Chern classes of this $K$-class contain some information about the kernel of the operators.
Dirac-harmonic maps $(f,ϕ)$ consist of a map $f:M\to N$ and a twisted spinor $ϕ\inΓ(ΣM\otimes f^*TN)$ and they are defined as critical points of the super-symmetric energy functional. A Dirac-harmonic map is called \emph{uncoupled}, if $f$ is a harmonic map. We show that under some minimality assumption Dirac-harmonic maps defined on a closed domain are uncoupled.
For a sequence of coupled fields $\{(ϕ_n,ψ_n)\}$ from a compact Riemann surface $M$ with smooth boundary to a general compact Riemannian manifold with uniformly bounded energy and satisfying the Dirac-harmonic system up to some uniformly controlled error terms, we show that the energy identity holds during a blow-up process near the boundary. As an application to the heat flow of Dirac-harmonic maps from surfaces with boundary, when such a flow blows up at infinite time, we obtain an energy identity.
We show the smoothness of weakly Dirac-harmonic maps from a closed spin Riemann surface into stationary Lorentzian manifolds, and obtain a regularity theorem for a class of critical elliptic systems without anti-symmetry structures.
We discuss a method to construct Dirac-harmonic maps developed by J.~Jost, X.~Mo and M.~Zhu in J.~Jost, X.~Mo, M.~Zhu, \emph{Some explicit constructions of Dirac-harmonic maps}, J. Geom. Phys. \textbf{59} (2009), no. 11, 1512--1527.The method uses harmonic spinors and twistor spinors, and mainly applies to Dirac-harmonic maps of codimension $1$ with target spaces of constant sectional curvature. Before the present article, it remained unclear when the conditions of the theorems in J.~Jost, X.~Mo, M.~Zhu, \emph{Some explicit constructions of Dirac-harmonic maps}, J. Geom. Phys. \textbf{59} (2009…
We prove the global existence of Dirac-wave maps with curvature term with small initial data on globally hyperbolic manifolds of arbitrary dimension which satisfy a suitable growth condition. In addition, we also prove a global existence result for wave maps under similar assumptions.
We study the influence of an additional scalar potential on various geometric and analytic properties of Dirac-harmonic maps. We will create a mathematical wish list of the possible benefits from inducing the potential term and point out that the latter cannot be achieved in general. Finally, we focus on several potentials that are motivated from supersymmetric quantum field theory.
Dirac-harmonic maps are critical points of a fermionic action functional, generalizing the Dirichlet energy for harmonic maps. We consider the case where the source manifold is a closed Riemann surface with the canonical Spin^c-structure determined by the complex structure and the target space is a Kaehler manifold. If the underlying map f is a J-holomorphic curve, we determine a space of spinors on the Riemann surface which form Dirac-harmonic maps together with f. For suitable complex structures on the target manifold the tangent bundle to the moduli space of J-holomorphic curves consists of…
In this paper, we discuss the general existence theory of Dirac-harmonic maps from closed surfaces via the heat flow for $α$-Dirac-harmonic maps and blow-up analysis. More precisely, given any initial map along which the Dirac operator has nontrivial minimal kernel, we first prove the short time existence of the heat flow for $α$-Dirac-harmonic maps. The obstacle to the global existence is the singular time when the kernel of the Dirac operator no longer stays minimal along the flow. In this case, the kernel may not be continuous even if the map is smooth with respect to time. To overcome this…
We study the evolution equations for a regularized version of Dirac-harmonic maps from closed Riemannian surfaces. We establish the existence of a global weak solution for the regularized problem, which is smooth away from finitely many singularities. Moreover, we discuss the convergence of the evolution equations and address the question if we can remove the regularization in the end.
We develop novel first-kind boundary integral equations for Euclidean Dirac operators in 3D Lipschitz domains comprising square-integrable potentials and involving only weakly singular kernels. Generalized Garding inequalities are derived and we establish that the obtained boundary integral operators are Fredholm of index zero. Their finite dimensional kernels are characterized and we show that their dimension is equal to the number of topological invariants of the domain's boundary, in other words to the sum of its Betti numbers. This is explained by the fundamental discovery that the associa…
We prove that all harmonic maps from $\mathbb R^2$ to $\mathbb S^2$ with finite energy are nondegenerate. That is, for any harmonic map $u$ from $\mathbb R^2$ to $\mathbb S^2$ of degree $m$ (in $\mathbb Z$), all bounded kernel maps of the linearized operator $L_u$ at $u$ are generated by these harmonic maps near $u$ and hence the real dimension of bounded kernel space of $L_u$ is $4|m|+2$.
We show that any closed $n$-dimensional manifold $(M,g)$ can be embedded by a map constructed using the heat kernels of the connection Laplacian as well as a maps constructed using truncated heat kernel at a certain time $t$ from a $δ$-net $\{q_i\}_{i=1}^{N_0}$ via a rescaling trick. Both the time $t$ and $N_0$ are bounded in terms of the dimension, bounds on the Ricci curvature and its derivative, the injectivity radius, and the volume. Moreover, both maps can be made arbitrarily close to an isometry.
We study families of Dirac-type operators, with compatible perturbations, associated to wedge metrics on stratified spaces. We define a closed domain and, under an assumption of invertible boundary families, prove that the operators are self-adjoint and Fredholm with compact resolvents and trace-class heat kernels. We establish a formula for the Chern character of their index.
