The compound Bi14Rh3I9 has recently been suggested as a weak three-dimensional topological insulator on the basis of angle-resolved photoemission and scanning-tunneling experiments in combination with density functional (DF) electronic structure calculations. These methods unanimously support the topological character of the headline compound, but a compelling confirmation could only be obtained by dedicated transport experiments. The latter, however, are biased by an intrinsic n-doping of the materials surface due to its polarity. Electronic reconstruction of the polar surface shifts the topological gap below the Fermi energy, which would also prevent any future device application. Here, we report the results of DF slab calculations for chemically gated and counter-doped surfaces of Bi14Rh3I9. We demonstrate that both methods can be used to compensate the surface polarity without closing the electronic gap.
A Bi2Se3 topological insulator field effect transistor is investigated by using ionic liquid as an electric double layer gating material, leading to a conductance modulation of 365% at room temperature. We discuss the role of charged impurities on the transport properties. The conductance modulation with gate bias is due to a change in the carrier concentration, whereas the temperature dependent conductance change is originated from a change in mobility. Large conductance modulation at room temperature along with the transparent optical properties makes topological insulators as an interesting…
The recently discovered topological insulators exhibit topologically protected metallic surface states which are interesting from the fundamental point of view and could be useful for various applications if an appropriate electronic gating can be realized. Our photoemission study of Cu intercalated Bi2Se3 shows that the surface states occupancy in this material can be tuned by changing the photon energy and understood as a photoemission induced gating effect. Our finding provides an effective tool to investigate the new physics coming from the topological surface states and suggests the inter…
Topological insulators (TIs) have attracted much attention due to their spin-polarized surface and edge states, whose origin in symmetry gives them intriguing quantum-mechanical properties. Robust control over the chemical potential of TI materials is important if these states are to become useful in new technologies, or as a venue for exotic physics. Unfortunately, chemical potential tuning is challenging in TIs in part because the fabrication of electrostatic top-gates tends to degrade material properties and the addition of chemical dopants or adsorbates can cause unwanted disorder. Here, w…
The tunability of the chemical potential for a wide range encompassing the Dirac point is important for many future devices based on topological insulators. Here we report a method to fabricate highly efficient top gates on epitaxially grown (Bi_{1-x}Sb_x)2Te3 topological insulator thin films without degrading the film quality. By combining an in situ deposited Al2O3 capping layer and a SiN_x dielectric layer deposited at low temperature, we were able to protect the films from degradation during the fabrication processes. We demonstrate that by using this top gate, the carriers in the top surf…
We demonstrate the ability to reduce the carrier concentration of thin films of the topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3 by utilizing a novel approach, namely non-volatile electrostatic gating via corona charging of electret polymers. Sufficient electric field can be imparted to a polymer-TI bilayer to result in significant electron density depletion, even without the continuous connection of a gate electrode or the chemical modification of the TI. We show that the Fermi level of Bi2Se3 is shifted towards the Dirac point with this method. Using THz spectroscopy, we find that the surface chemical …
We report that the ionic-liquid gating of bulk single crystals of a topological insulator can control the type of the surface carriers and even results in ambipolar transport. This was made possible by the use of a highly bulk-insulating BiSbTeSe2 system where the chemical potential is located close to both the surface Dirac point and the middle of the bulk band gap. Thanks to the use of ionic liquid, the control of the surface chemical potential by gating was possible on the whole surface of a bulk three-dimensional sample, opening new experimental opportunities for topological insulators. In…
Electronically phase separated manganite wires are found to exhibit controllable metal-insulator transitions under local electric fields. The switching characteristics are shown to be fully reversible, polarity independent, and highly resistant to thermal breakdown caused by repeated cycling. It is further demonstrated that multiple discrete resistive states can be accessed in a single wire. The results conform to a phenomenological model in which the inherent nanoscale insulating and metallic domains are rearranged through electrophoretic-like processes to open and close percolation channels.

We use an aluminium single electron transistor with a magnetic gate to directly quantify the chemical potential anisotropy of GaMnAs materials. Uniaxial and cubic contributions to the chemical potential anisotropy are determined from field rotation experiments. In performing magnetic field sweeps we observe additional isotropic magnetic field dependence of the chemical potential which shows a non-monotonic behavior. The observed effects are explained by calculations based on the $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ kinetic exchange model of ferromagnetism in GaMnAs. Our device inverts the conventional …
Introducing, observing, and manipulating individual impurities coupled to a host material offers the opportunity to create new device concepts based on single spin and charge states. Because of potential applications in spintronics and magneto-electrics, such an approach would be particularly useful for topological insulators (TI), a recently discovered material class hosting spin-momentum- locked surface states. To make them useful for new technologies, a robust control of their interaction with external perturbations is required. However, traditional approaches such as metal electrodes or do…
Ionic liquid gating has become a popular tool for tuning the charge carrier densities of complex oxides. Among these the band insulator SrTiO$_3$ is one of the most extensively studied materials. While experiments have succeeded in inducing (super)conductivity, the process by which ionic liquid gating turns this insulator into a conductor is still under scrutiny. Recent experiments have suggested an electrochemical rather than electrostatic origin of the induced charge carriers. Here, we report experiments probing the time evolution of conduction of SrTiO$_3$ near the glass transition temperat…
In Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se, the period of quantum oscillations arising from surface Dirac fermions can be increased 6-fold using ionic liquid gating. At large gate voltages, the Fermi energy reaches the $N$ = 1 Landau level in a 14-Tesla field. This enables the $\frac12$-shift predicted for the Dirac spectrum to be measured accurately. A surprising result is that liquid gating strongly enhances the surface mobility. By analyzing the Hall conductivity, we show that the enhancement occurs on only one surface. We present evidence that the gating process is fully reversible (hence consistent with band-bend…
The magnetoelectric effect predicted in topological insulators makes heterostructures that combine magnetic materials and such insulators promising candidates for spintronics applications. Here, we theoretically consider a setup that exhibits two well-separated interfaces between a topological insulator and a ferromagnetic insulator. We show that there is a topological magnetic dipole-dipole interaction stemming from long-range Coulomb interactions. We analytically derive the magnetization dynamics at the two interfaces and discuss how the long-range coupling can be applied to non-locally indu…
We investigate the photocurrent properties of the topological insulator (Bi$_{0.5}$Sb$_{0.5}$)$_2$Te$_3$ on SrTiO$_3$-substrates. We find reproducible, submicron photocurrent patterns generated by long-range chemical potential fluctuations, occurring predominantly at the topological insulator/substrate interface. We fabricate nano-plowed constrictions which comprise single potential fluctuations. Hereby, we can quantify the magnitude of the disorder potential to be in the meV range. The results further suggest a dominating photo-thermoelectric current generated in the surface states in such na…
The spin chemical potential characterizes the tendency of spins to diffuse. Probing the spin chemical potential could provide insight into materials such as magnetic insulators and spin liquids and aid optimization of spintronic devices. Here, we introduce single-spin magnetometry as a generic platform for non-perturbative, nanoscale characterization of spin chemical potentials. We use this platform to investigate magnons in a magnetic insulator, surprisingly finding that the magnon chemical potential can be efficiently controlled by driving the system's ferromagnetic resonance. We introduce a…
The electronic properties of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) can be precisely tuned by chemical doping. Here we demonstrate that amino (NH$_2$) functional groups attached at the edges of chiral GNRs (chGNRs) can efficiently gate the chGNRs and lead to the valence band (VB) depopulation on a metallic surface. The NH$_2$-doped chGNRs are grown by on-surface synthesis on Au(111) using functionalized bianthracene precursors. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy resolves that the NH$_2$ groups significantly up-shift the bands of chGNRs, causing the Fermi level crossing of the VB onset of chGNRs. Through den…
Many proposed experiments involving topological insulators (TIs) require spatial control over time-reversal symmetry and chemical potential. We demonstrate reconfigurable micron-scale optical control of both magnetization (which breaks time-reversal symmetry) and chemical potential in ferromagnetic thin films of Cr-(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ grown on SrTiO$_3$. By optically modulating the coercivity of the films, we write and erase arbitrary patterns in their remanent magnetization, which we then image with Kerr microscopy. Additionally, by optically manipulating a space charge layer in the underlying …
Electrical field control of the carrier density of topological insulators (TI) has greatly expanded the possible practical use of these materials. However, the combination of low temperature local probe studies and a gate tunable TI device remains challenging. We have overcome this limitation by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements on in-situ molecular beam epitaxy growth of Bi2Se3 films on SrTiO3 substrates with pre-patterned electrodes. Using this gating method, we are able to shift the Fermi level of the top surface states by 250 meV on a 3 nm thick Bi2Se3 device. We …
From the analysis of the cyclotron resonance, we experimentally obtain the band structure of the three-dimensional topological insulator based on a HgTe thin film. Top gating was used to shift the Fermi level in the film, allowing us to detect separate resonance modes corresponding to the surface states at two opposite film interfaces, the bulk conduction band, and the valence band. The experimental band structure agrees reasonably well with the predictions of the $\mathbf{k\cdot p}$ model. Due to the strong hybridization of the surface and bulk bands, the dispersion of the surface states is c…
We report electrical measurements of the current-induced spin polarization of the surface current in topological insulator devices where contributions from bulk and surface conduction can be disen- tangled by electrical gating. The devices use a ferromagnetic tunnel junction (permalloy/Al2O3) as a spin detector on a back-gated (Bi,Sb)2Te3 channel. We observe hysteretic voltage signals as the magnetization of the detector ferromagnet is switched parallel or anti-parallel to the spin polariza- tion of the surface current. The amplitude of the detected voltage change is linearly proportional to t…
A quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator is characterized by quantized Hall and vanishing longitudinal resistances at zero magnetic field that are protected against local perturbations and independent of sample details. This insensitivity makes the microscopic details of the local current distribution inaccessible to global transport measurements. Accordingly, the current distributions that give rise to the transport quantization are unknown. Here we use magnetic imaging to directly visualize the transport current in the QAH regime. As we tune through the QAH plateau by electrostatic gating, w…
Recent advances in tuning electronic, magnetic, and topological properties of two-dimensional (2D) magnets have opened a new frontier in the study of quantum physics and promised exciting possibilities for future quantum technologies. In this study, we find that the dual-gate technology can well tune the electronic and topological properties of antiferromagnetic (AFM) even septuple-layer (SL) MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ thin films. Under an out-of-plane electric field that breaks $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, the Berry curvature of the thin film could be engineered efficiently, resulting in a huge change of ano…
Three dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) are an important class of materials with applications in electronics, spintronics and quantum computing. With the recent development of truly bulk insulating 3D TIs, it has become possible to realize surface dominated phenomena in electrical transport measurements e.g. the quantum Hall (QH) effect of massless Dirac fermions in topological surface states (TSS). However, to realize more advanced devices and phenomena, there is a need for a platform to tune the TSS or modify them e.g. gap them by proximity with magnetic insulators, in a clean ma…
The development of spin-based applications of topological insulators requires the knowledge and understanding of spin texture configuration maps as they change via gating in the vicinity of an isolated Dirac node. An isolated (graphene-like) Dirac node, however, does not exist in Bi2Te3. While the isolation of surface states via transport channels has been promisingly achieved in Bi2Te3, it is not known how spin textures modulate while gating the surface. Another drawback of Bi2Te3 is that it features multiple band crossings while chemical potential is placed near the Dirac node (at least 3 no…
By combining transport and photo emission measurements on (Bi1-xInx)2Se3 thin films, we report that this system transforms from a topologically non-trivial metal into a topologically trivial band insulator through three quantum phase transitions. At x = 3-7%, there is a transition from a topologically non-trivial metal to a trivial metal. At x = 15%, the metal becomes a variable-range-hopping insulator. Finally, above x = 25%, the system becomes a true band insulator with its resistance immeasurably large even at room temperature. This material provides a new venue to investigate topologically…
Here, we examine the influence of surface chemical reactivity toward ambient gases on the performance of nanodevices based on two-dimensional materials "beyond graphene" and novel topological phases of matter. While surface oxidation in ambient conditions was observed for silicene and phosphorene with subsequent reduction of the mobility of charge carriers, nanodevices with active channels of indium selenide, bismuth chalcogenides and transition-metal dichalcogenides are stable in air. However, air-exposed indium selenide suffers of p-type doping due to water decomposition on Se vacancies, whe…
Boosting the sensitivity of solid-state gas sensors by incorporating nanostructured materials as the active sensing element can be complicated by interfacial effects. Interfaces at nanoparticles, grains, or contacts may result in non-linear current-voltage response, high electrical resistance, and ultimately, electric noise that limits the sensor read-out. Here we report the possibility to prepare nominally one atom thin, electrically continuous metals, by straightforward physical vapor deposition on the carbon zero-layer grown epitaxially on silicon carbide. With platinum as the metal, its el…
We report a systematic first-principles investigation of the influence of different magnetic insulators on the magnetic proximity effect induced in graphene. Four different magnetic insulators are considered: two ferromagnetic europium chalcogenides namely EuO and EuS and two ferrimagnetic insulators yttrium iron garnet (YIG) and cobalt ferrite (CFO). The obtained exchange-splitting varies from tens to hundreds of meV. We also find an electron doping induced by YIG and europium chalcogenides substrates, that shift the Fermi level up to 0.78 eV and 1.3 eV respectively, whereas hole doping up to…
Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy is used to observe changes in the electronic structure of bulk-doped topological insulator Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ as additional copper atoms are deposited onto the cleaved crystal surface. Carrier density and surface-normal electrical field strength near the crystal surface are estimated to consider the effect of chemical surface gating on atypical superconducting properties associated with topological insulator order, such as the dynamics of theoretically predicted Majorana Fermion vortices.
We determine the optical response of ultrathin film topological insulators in the presence of a quantizing external magnetic field taking into account both hybridization between surface states, broken inversion symmetry and explicit time reversal symmetry breaking by the magnetic field. We find that breaking of inversion symmetry in the system, which can be due to interaction with a substrate or electrical gating, results in Landau level crossings which lead to additional optical transition channels that were previously forbidden. We show that by tuning the hybridization and symmetry breaking …
We develop a linear-response transport theory of diffusive spin and heat transport by magnons in magnetic insulators with metallic contacts. The magnons are described by a position dependent temperature and chemical potential that are governed by diffusion equations with characteristic relaxation lengths. Proceeding from a linearized Boltzmann equation, we derive expressions for length scales and transport coefficients. For yttrium iron garnet (YIG) at room temperature we find that long-range transport is dominated by the magnon chemical potential. We compare the model's results with recent ex…
Topological insulators (TIs) host unusual surface states with Dirac dispersion and helical spin texture and hold high potentials for novel applications in spintronics and quantum computing. Control of the chemical potential in these materials is challenging but crucial to realizing the hotly pursued exotic physics, including efficient spin generation1,2, Majorana Fermions3-5, and exciton condensation6,7. Here we report a simple and effective method that can in-situ tune the chemical potential of single-crystal Bi2-xSbxSe3 nanoribbons, with a magnitude significantly larger than traditional elec…
Three dimensional (3D) topological insulators are quantum materials with a spin-orbit induced bulk insulating gap that exhibit quantum-Hall-like phenomena in the absence of applied magnetic fields. The proposed applications of topological insulators in device geometries rely on the ability to tune the chemical potential on their surfaces in the vicinity of the Dirac node. Here, we demonstrate a suite of surface control methods based on a combination of photo-doping and molecular-doping to systematically tune the Dirac fermion density on the topological (111) surface of Bi2Te3. Their efficacy i…

The results of a detailed study of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ surface state energy structure in the vicinity of surface steps using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy methods are presented. An increase in the chemical potential level $μ$ near the step edge is observed. The value of the increase $δμ\sim 0.1$~eV is found to correlate with the step height. The effect is caused by redistribution of electron wave functions between the outer and inner edges of surface steps, as known for normal metals. The smaller value of the chemical potential shift and its larger character…
Using field-angle, temperature, and back-gate-voltage dependence of the weak anti-localization (WAL) and universal conductance fluctuations of thin Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 topological-insulator single crystals, in combination with gate-tuned Hall resistivity measurements, we reliably separated the surface conduction of the topological nature from both the bulk conduction and topologically trivial surface conduction. We minimized the bulk conduction in the crystals and back-gate tuned the Fermi level to the topological bottom-surface band while keeping the top surface insensitive to back-gating wi…
The ability to directly observe electronic band structure in modern nanoscale field-effect devices could transform understanding of their physics and function. One could, for example, visualize local changes in the electrical and chemical potentials as a gate voltage is applied. One could also study intriguing physical phenomena such as electrically induced topological transitions and many-body spectral reconstructions. Here we show that submicron angle-resolved photoemission (micro-ARPES) applied to two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures affords this ability. In graphene devices,…
In this work, we use charge extraction via organic overlayer deposition to lower the chemical potential of topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films into the intrinsic (bulk-insulating) regime. We demonstrate the tuning and stabilization of intrinsic topological insulators at high mobility with low-cost organic films. With the protection of the organic charge extraction layers tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane(F4TCNQ) or tris(acetylacetonato)cobalt(III) (Co(acac)3), the sample is stable in the atmosphere with chemical potential ~135 meV above the Dirac point (85 meV below the conduction band m…
Many recent studies show that superconductivity not only exists in atomically thin monolayers but can exhibit enhanced properties such as higher transition temperature and stronger critical field. Nevertheless, besides being air unstable, weak tunability in these intrinsically metallic monolayers has posed a severe limitation in exploring monolayer superconductivity, hence hindering possible applications in electronic devices. Using field effect gating, we prepared monolayer superconductivity in easily accessible CVD-grown WS2, a typical ambient stable semiconducting transition metal dichalcog…
Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy we studied the evolution of the surface electronic structure of the topological insulator $\text{Bi}_2\text{Se}_3$ as a function of water vapor exposure. We find that a surface reaction with water induces a band bending shifting the Dirac point deep into the occupied states and creating quantum well states with a strong Rashba-type splitting. The surface is thus not chemically inert, but the topological state remains protected. The band bending is traced back to Se-abstraction leaving positively charged vacancies at the surface. Due to the presen…
Two-dimensional topological insulators (2D TIs) are a highly desired quantum phase but few materials have demonstrated clear signatures of a 2D TI state. It has been predicted that 2D TIs can be created from thin films of three-dimensional TIs by reducing the film thickness until the surface states hybridize. Here, we employ this technique to report the first observation of a 2D TI state in epitaxial thin films of cadmium arsenide, a prototype Dirac semimetal in bulk form and a 3D TI in thin films. Using magnetotransport measurements with electrostatic gating, we observe a Landau level spectru…
We predict from first-principles calculations a novel structure of stanene with dumbbell units (DB), and show that it is a two-dimensional topological insulator with inverted band gap which can be tuned by compressive strain. Furthermore, we propose that the boron nitride sheet and reconstructed ($2\times2$) InSb(111) surfaces are ideal substrates for the experimental realization of DB stanene, maintaining its non-trivial topology. Combined with standard semiconductor technologies, such as magnetic doping and electrical gating, the quantum anomalous Hall effect, Chern half metallicity and topo…
We study the possibility of realizing quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) with tunable Chern number through doping magnetic elements in the multi-layer topological insulator film. We find that high Chern number QAHE phases exist in the ideal neutral samples and it can make transition to another QAHE phase directly by means of tuning the exchange field strength or sample thickness. With the help of an extended Haldane model, we demonstrate the physical mechanism of the tunable Chern number QAHE phase. Further, we study the phenomena in the realistic samples with the Fermi energy being gating-m…
Topological insulators represent a new state of quantum matter attractive to both fundamental physics and technological applications such as spintronics and quantum information processing. In a topological insulator, the bulk energy gap is traversed by spin-momentum locked surface states forming an odd number of surface bands that possesses unique electronic properties. However, transport measurements have often been dominated by residual bulk carriers from crystal defects or environmental doping which mask the topological surface contribution. Here we demonstrate (BixSb1-x)2Te3 as a tunable t…
The surfaces of intrinsic magnetic topological insulators (TIs) host magnetic moments exchange-coupled to Dirac electrons. We study the magnetic phases arising from tuning the electron density using variational and exact diagonalization approaches. In the dilute limit, we find that magnetic skrymions are formed which bind to electrons leading to a skyrmion Wigner crystal phase while at higher densities spin spirals accompanied by chiral 1d channels of electrons are formed. The binding of electrons to textures raises the possibility of manipulating textures with electrostatic gating. We determi…
Topological insulators (TIs) represent a novel quantum state of matter, characterized by edge or surface-states, showing up on the topological character of the bulk wave functions. Allowing electrons to move along their surface, but not through their inside, they emerged as an intriguing material platform for the exploration of exotic physical phenomena, somehow resembling the graphene Dirac-cone physics, as well as for exciting applications in optoelectronics, spintronics, nanoscience, low-power electronics, and quantum computing. Investigation of topological surface states (TSS) is conventio…
The low-energy physics of two-dimensional Quantum Anomalous Hall insulators like (Hg,Mn)Te quantum wells or magnetically doped (Bi,Sb)Te thin films can be effectively described by two Chern insulators, including a Dirac, as well as a momentum-dependent mass term. Each of those Chern insulators is directly related to the parity anomaly of planar quantum electrodynamics. In this work, we analyze the finite temperature Hall conductivity of a single Chern insulator in 2+1 space-time dimensions under the influence of a chemical potential and an out-of-plane magnetic field. At zero magnetic field, t…
We present a theory of quantum oscillations in insulators that are particle-hole symmetric and non-topological but with arbitrary band dispersion, at both zero and non-zero temperature. At temperatures $T$ less than or comparable to the gap, the dependence of oscillations on $T$ is markedly different from that in metals and depends crucially on the position of the chemical potential $μ$ in the gap. If $μ$ is in the middle of the gap, oscillations do not change with $T$; however, if $μ$ is asymmetrically positioned in the gap, surprisingly, oscillations go to zero at a critical value of the inv…
We investigate the scattering and localization properties of edge and bulk states in a disordered two-dimensional topological insulator when they coexist at the same fermi energy. Due to edge-bulk backscattering (which is not prohibited \emph{a priori} by topology or symmetry), Anderson disorder makes the edge and bulk states localized indistinguishably. Two methods are proposed to effectively decouple them and to restore robust transport. The first kind of decouple is from long range disorder, since edge and bulk states are well separated in $k$ space. The second one is from an edge gating, o…
Bulk and surface state contributions to the electrical resistance of single-crystal samples of the topological Kondo insulator compound SmB6 are investigated as a function of crystal thickness and surface charge density, the latter tuned by ionic liquid gating with electrodes patterned in a Corbino disk geometry on a single surface. By separately tuning bulk and surface conduction channels, we show conclusive evidence for a model with an insulating bulk and metallic surface states, with a crossover temperature that depends solely on the relative contributions of each conduction channel. The su…
We theoretically study the spin current and spin-transfer torque generation in a conventional spin- valve hybrid structure of type ferromagnetic/normal metal/ferromagnetic (FM/NM/FM) made of the topological insulator (TI), in which a gate voltage is attached to the normal layer. We demonstrate the penetration of the spin-transfer torque into the right ferromagnetic layer and show that, unlike graphene spin-valve junction, the spin-transfer torque in TI is very sensitive to the chemical potential of the NM region. As an important result, by changing the chemical potential of the NM spacer and m…
We report mid-infrared spectroscopy measurements of an electrostatically gated topological insulator, in which we observe several percent modulation of transmittance and reflectance of (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 films as gating shifts the Fermi level. Infrared transmittance measurements of gated (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 films were enabled by use of an epitaxial lift-off method for large-area transfer of topological insulator films from infrared-absorbing SrTiO3 growth substrates to thermal oxidized silicon substrates. We combine these optical experiments with transport measurements and angle-resolved photoemission …
