We report a systematic first-principles investigation of the influence of different magnetic insulators on the magnetic proximity effect induced in graphene. Four different magnetic insulators are considered: two ferromagnetic europium chalcogenides namely EuO and EuS and two ferrimagnetic insulators yttrium iron garnet (YIG) and cobalt ferrite (CFO). The obtained exchange-splitting varies from tens to hundreds of meV. We also find an electron doping induced by YIG and europium chalcogenides substrates, that shift the Fermi level up to 0.78 eV and 1.3 eV respectively, whereas hole doping up to 0.5 eV is generated by CFO. Furthermore, we study the variation of the extracted exchange and tight binding parameters as a function of the EuO and EuS thicknesses. We show that those parameters are robust to thickness variation such that a single monolayer of magnetic insulator can induce a large magnetic proximity effect on graphene. Those findings pave the way towards possible engineering of graphene spin-gating by proximity effect especially in view of recent experiments advancement.
In two-dimensional van der Waals (vdWs) materials, the relative twist angle between adjacent layers not only controls their electronic properties, but also determines their stacking energy. This effect makes it much easier to realize energetically favorable configurations of the vdWs materials, for example, Bernal-stacked structure of bilayer graphene. Here we demonstrate that we can controllably tailor adhesive energy landscape of graphene nanostructures on graphene and stabilize the system with tunable twist angle by using a one-dimensional tilt grain boundary (GB). The area ratio with diffe…
Integration of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdWs) materials with non-2D materials to realize mixed-dimensional heterostructures has potential for creating functional devices beyond the reach of existing materials and has long been a pursuit of the material science community. Here we report the patterning of monolayer/bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanostructures with nanometer-precision, tunable sizes and sites at interfaces of graphene/TMD heterostructures. Our experiments demonstrate that the TMD nanostructures can be created at selected positions of the interface using…
The long spin-diffusion length, spin-lifetimes and excellent optical absorption coefficient of graphene provide an excellent platform for building opto-electronic devices as well as spin-based logic in a nanometer regime. In this study, by employing density functional theory and its time-dependent version, we provide a detailed analysis of how the size and shape of graphene nanoflakes can be used to alter their magnetic structure and optical properties. As the edges of zigzag graphene nanoribbons are known to align anti-ferromagnetically and armchair nanoribbons are typically non-magnetic, a c…
The possibility to make 10 nm scale, and low-disorder, suspended graphene devices would open up many possibilities to study and make use of strongly coupled quantum electronics, quantum mechanics, and optics. We present a versatile method, based on the electromigration of gold-on-graphene bow-tie bridges, to fabricate low-disorder suspended graphene junctions and quantum dots with lengths ranging from 6 nm up to 55 nm. We control the length of the junctions, and shape of their gold contacts by adjusting the power at which the electromigration process is allowed to avalanche. Using carefully en…
We demonstrate that electronic and magnetic properties of graphene can be tuned via proximity of multiferroic substrate. Our first-principles calculations performed both with and without spin-orbit coupling clearly show that by contacting graphene with bismuth ferrite BiFeO$_3$ (BFO) film, the spin-dependent electronic structure of graphene is strongly impacted both by the magnetic order and by electric polarization in the underlying BFO. Based on extracted Hamiltonian parameters obtained from the graphene band structure, we propose a concept of six-resistance device based on exploring multife…
We propose a theoretical approach to quantitatively determine the photothermally driven enhancement of molecular mobility of graphene-indomethacin mixtures under infrared laser irradiation. Graphene plasmons absorb incident electromagnetic energy and dissipate them into heat. The absorbed energy depends on optical properties of graphene plasmons, which are sensitive to structural parameters, and concentration of plasmonic nanostructures. By using theoretical model, we calculate temperature gradients of the bulk drug with different concentrations of graphene plasmons. From these, we determine t…
The synthesis, physical, photocatalytic, and antibacterial properties of MgO and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) nanocomposites are reported. The crystallinity, phase, morphology, chemical bonding, and vibrational modes of prepared nanomaterials are studied. The conductive nature of GNPs is tailored via photocatalysis and enhanced antibacterial activity. It is interestingly observed that the MgO/GNPs nanocomposite with optimized GNPs content show a significant photocatalytic activity (97.23% degradation) as compared to bare MgO (43%) which makes it the potential photocatalyst for purification of…
Depositing magnetic insulators on graphene has been a promising route to introduce magnetism via exchange proximity interaction in graphene for future spintronics applications. Molecule-based magnets may offer unique opportunities because of their synthesis versatility. Here, we investigated the magnetic proximity effect of epitaxial iron phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules on high-quality monolayer and bilayer graphene devices on hexagonal boron nitride substrate by probing the local and non-local transport. Although the FePc molecules introduce large hole doping effects combined with mobility de…
In a heterostructure of graphene and the ferromagnetic insulator EuO, the Eu atoms induce proximity exchange and inter-valley interactions in the graphene layer. Constrained by the lattice symmetries, and guided by ab initio calculations, a model Hamiltonian is constructed that describes the low-energy bands. Band parameters such as proximity induced exchange splitting, spin orbit coupling, and inter-valley interaction are determined. Calculations of the Chern number identify the conditions under which the hetero-structures exhibit topologically non-trivial bands that give rise to the quantum …

We demonstrate the existence of Giant proximity magnetoresistance (PMR) effect in a graphene spin valve where spin polarization is induced by a nearby magnetic insulator. PMR calculations were performed for yttrium iron garnet (YIG), cobalt ferrite (CFO), and two europium chalcogenides EuO and EuS. We find a significant PMR (up to 100%) values defined as a relative change of graphene conductance with respect to parallel and antiparallel alignment of two proximity induced magnetic regions within graphene. Namely, for high Curie temperature (Tc) CFO and YIG insulators which are particularly impo…
There are a number of theoretical proposals based on strain engineering of graphene and other two-dimensional materials, however purely mechanical control of strain fields in these systems has remained a major challenge. The two approaches mostly used so far either couple the electrical and mechanical properties of the system simultaneously or introduce some unwanted disturbances due to the substrate. Here, we report on silicon micro-machined comb-drive actuators to controllably and reproducibly induce strain in a suspended graphene sheet, in an entirely mechanical way. We use spatially resolv…
Contrary to most materials, graphene exhibits a negative thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), i.e it contracts when heated. This contraction is due to the thermal excitation of low energy out-of-plane vibration modes. These flexural modes have been reported to govern the electronic transport and the mechanical response of suspended graphene. In this work, we systematically investigate the influence of defects in the TEC of suspended graphene membranes. Controlled introduction of low densities of mono-vacancies reduces the graphene TEC, up to one order of magnitude for a defect density of $5\ti…
The so-called spin-orbit proximity effect experimentally realized in graphene (G) on several different heavy metal surfaces opens a new perspective to engineer the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for new generation spintronics devices. Here, via large-scale density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed for two distinct graphene/metal models, G/Pt(111) and G/Au/Ni(111), we show that the spin-orbit splitting of the Dirac cones (DCs) in these stuctures might be enhanced by either adsorption of adatoms on top of graphene (decoration) or between the graphene and the metal (intercalation). While …
The emergence of topological order in graphene is in great demand for the realization of quantum spin Hall states. Recently, it is theoretically proposed that the spin textures of surface states in topological insulator can be directly transferred to graphene by means of proximity effect. Here we report the observations of the topological proximity effect in the graphene-topological insulator Bi2Se3 heterojunctions via magnetotransport measurements. The coupling between the p_z orbitals of graphene and the p orbitals of surface states on the Bi2Se3 bottom surface can be enhanced by applying pe…
We investigate the growth of the graphene buffer layer and the involved step bunching behavior of the silicon carbide substrate surface using atomic force microscopy. The formation of local buffer layer domains are identified to be the origin of undesirably high step edges in excellent agreement with the predictions of a general model of step dynamics. The applied polymer-assisted sublimation growth method demonstrates that the key principle to suppress this behavior is the uniform nucleation of the buffer layer. In this way, the silicon carbide surface is stabilized such that ultra-flat surfa…
Graphene/MoS2 heterostructures are formed by combining the nanosheets of graphene and monolayer MoS2. The electronic features of both constituent monolayers are rather well-preserved in the resultant heterostructure due to the weak van der Waals interaction between the layers. However, the proximity of MoS2 induces strong spin orbit coupling effect of strength ~1 meV in graphene, which is nearly three orders of magnitude larger than the intrinsic spin orbit coupling of pristine graphene. This opens a bandgap in graphene and further causes anticrossings of the spin-nondegenerate bands near the …

Gate-tunable spin-dependent properties could be induced in graphene at room temperature through magnetic proximity effect by placing it in contact with a metallic ferromagnet. Because strong chemical bonding with the metallic substrate makes gating ineffective, an intervening passivation layer is needed. Previously considered passivation layers result in a large shift of the Dirac point away from the Fermi level, so that unrealistically large gate fields are required to tune the spin polarization in graphene. We show that a monolayer of Au or Pt used as the passivation layer between Co and gra…
Graphene is the first model system of two-dimensional topological insulator (TI), also known as quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator. The QSH effect in graphene, however, has eluded direct experimental detection because of its extremely small energy gap due to the weak spin-orbit coupling. Here we predict by ab initio calculations a giant (three orders of magnitude) proximity induced enhancement of the TI energy gap in the graphene layer that is sandwiched between thin slabs of Sb2Te3 (or MoTe2). This gap (1.5 meV) is accessible by existing experimental techniques, and it can be further enhanced …
Two dimensional (2D) materials provide a unique platform to explore the full potential of magnetic proximity driven phenomena, which can be further used for applications in next generation spintronic devices. Of particular interest is to understand and control spin currents in graphene by the magnetic exchange field of a nearby ferromagnetic material in graphene/ferromagnetic-insulator (FMI) heterostructures. Here, we present the experimental study showing the strong modulation of spin currents in graphene layers by controlling the direction of the exchange field due to FMI magnetization. Owin…
Graphene offers a possibility for actively controlling plasmon confinement and propagation by tailoring its spatial conductivity pattern. However, implementation of this concept has been hampered because uncontrollable plasmon reflection is easily induced by inhomogeneous dielectric environment. In this work, we demonstrate full electrical control of plasmon reflection/transmission at electronic boundaries induced by a zinc-oxide-based dual gate, which is designed to minimize the dielectric modulation. Using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, we show that the plasmon reflection can be va…

A variety of novel quantum phases have been achieved in twist bilayer graphene (tBLG) and other moire superlattices recently, including correlated insulators, superconductivity, magnetism, and topological states. These phenomena are very sensitive to the moire superlattices, which can hardly be changed rapidly or intensely. Here, we report the experimental realization of a high-order moire pattern (a high-order interference pattern) in graphene-monolayer xenon heterostructure (G/mXe), with moire period in-situ tuned from few nanometers to infinity by changing the lattice constant of Xe through…
We report that the π-electrons of graphene can be spin-polarized to create a phase with a significant spin-orbit gap at the Dirac point (DP) using a graphene-interfaced topological insulator hybrid material. We have grown epitaxial Bi2Te2Se (BTS) films on a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene. We observe two linear surface bands both from the CVD graphene notably flattened and BTS coexisting with their DPs separated by 0.53 eV in the photoemission data measured with synchrotron photons. We further demonstrate that the separation between the two DPs, ΔD-D, can be artificially fine-tuned by…
We report on spatial measurements of the superconducting proximity effect in epitaxial graphene induced by a graphene-superconductor interface. Superconducting aluminum films were grown on epitaxial multilayer graphene on SiC. The aluminum films were discontinuous with networks of trenches in the film morphology reaching down to exposed graphene terraces. Scanning tunneling spectra measured on the graphene terraces show a clear decay of the superconducting energy gap with increasing separation from the graphene-aluminum edges. The spectra were well described by Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) …
Due to its two dimensional nature, ferromagnetism and charge doping can be induced by proximity and electric field effects in graphene. Taking advantage of these features, we propose an electrically engineered spin valve by combining two magnetic insulators (using EuO, EuS, or YIG) and three coating gates. Two top gates are used to cancel the heavy electron doping's in these magnets and one back gate is used to utilize the normal or half-metallic ferromagnetisms. We demonstrate that, when the second top gate is tuned to utilize the insulating or spin insulating states, huge giant magnetoresist…

Graphene-based materials (GBMs) constitute a large family of materials which has attracted great interest for potential applications. In this work, we apply first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and fully atomistic reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the structural and electronic effects of hydrogenation in Me-graphene, a non-zero bandgap GBM composed of both $sp^2$ and $sp^3$-hybridized carbon. Our DFT results show a substantial tuning of the electronic properties of Me-graphene by hydrogenation, with the bandgap varying from $0.64$ eV to $2.…
Proximity-induced fine features and spin-textures of the electronic bands in graphene-based van der Waals heterostructures can be explored from the point of tailoring a twist angle. Here we study spin-orbit coupling and exchange coupling engineering of graphene states in the proximity of 1T-TaS$_2$ not triggering the twist, but a charge density wave in 1T-TaS$_2$-a realistic low-temperature phase. Using density functional theory and effective model we found that the emergence of the charge density wave in 1T-TaS$_2$ significantly enhances Rashba spin-orbit splitting in graphene and tilts the s…
We introduce a $p_{z}-d$ coupling model Hamiltonian for the $π$-graphene/Au bands that predicts a rather large intrinsic spin-orbit (SO) coupling as are being reported in recent experiments and DFT studies. Working within the analytical Slater-Koster tight-binding approach we were able to identify the overlapping orbitals of relevance in the enhancement of the SO coupling for both, the sublattice symmetric (BC), and the ATOP (AC) stacking configurations. Our model effective Hamiltonian reproduces quite well the experimental spectrum for the two registries, and in addition, its shows that the h…
We report on Andreev reflections at clean NbSe2-bilayer graphene junctions. The high transparency of the junction, which manifests as a large conductance enhancement of up to 1.8, enables us to see clear evidence of a proximity-induced superconducting gap in bilayer graphene and two Andreev reflections through a vertical NbSe2-graphene and a lateral graphene-graphene junction respectively. Quantum transport simulations capture the complexity of the experimental data and illuminate the impact of various microscopic parameters on the transmission of the junction. Our work establishes the practic…
Spin orbit coupling (SOC) is the key to realizing time-reversal invariant topological phases of matter. Famously, SOC was predicted by Kane and Mele to stabilize a quantum spin Hall insulator; however, the weak intrinsic SOC in monolayer graphene has precluded experimental observation. Here, we exploit a layer-selective proximity effect---achieved via van der Waals contact to a semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide--to engineer Kane-Mele SOC in ultra-clean \textit{bilayer} graphene. Using high-resolution capacitance measurements to probe the bulk electronic compressibility, we find th…
We present a transfer-free preparation method for graphene on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) crystals by chemical vapor deposition of graphene via a catalytic proximity effect, i.e. activated by a Cu catalyst close-by . We demonstrate the full coverage by monolayer graphene of half-millimeter-sized hexagonal boron nitride crystals exfoliated on a copper foil prior to growth. We demonstrate that the proximity of the copper catalyst ensures high yield with the growth rate estimated between of 2μm/min to 5μm/min . Optical and electron microscopies together with confocal micro-Raman mapping confir…
Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in graphene can be greatly enhanced by proximity coupling it to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) such as WSe2. We find that the strength of the acquired SOC in graphene depends on the stacking order of the heterostructures when using hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as the capping layer, i.e., SiO2/graphene/WSe2/h-BN exhibiting stronger SOC than SiO2/WSe2/graphene/h-BN. We utilize photoluminescence (PL) as an indicator to characterize the interaction between graphene and monolayer WSe2 grown by chemical vapor deposition. We observe much stronger PL quenching in t…
The introduction of superconductivity to the Dirac surface states of a topological insulator leads to a topological superconductor, which may support topological quantum computing through Majorana zero modes. The development of a scalable material platform is key to the realization of topological quantum computing. Here we report on the growth and properties of high-quality (Bi,Sb)2Te3/graphene/gallium heterostructures. Our synthetic approach enables atomically sharp layers at both hetero-interfaces, which in turn promotes proximity-induced superconductivity that originates in the gallium film…
We study proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in bilayer graphene/few-layer WSe2 heterostructure devices. Contact mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) cleaning yields ultra-clean interfaces and high-mobility devices. In a perpendicular magnetic field, we measure the quantum Hall effect to determine the Landau level structure in the presence of out-of-plane Ising and in-plane Rashba SOC. A distinct Landau level crossing pattern emerges when tuning the charge density and displacement field independently with dual gates, originating from a layer-selective SOC proximity effect. Analyzing the …
In the pursuit of developing routes to enhance magnetic Kitaev interactions in α-RuCl3, as well as probing doping effects, we investigate the electronic properties of α-RuCl3 in proximity to graphene. We study α-RuCl3/graphene heterostructures via ab initio density functional theory calculations, Wannier projection and non-perturbative exact diagonalization methods. We show that α-RuCl3 becomes strained when placed on graphene and charge transfer occurs between the two layers, making α-RuCl3 (graphene) lightly electron-doped (hole-doped). This gives rise to an insulator to metal transition in …
We investigate the interactions between two identical magnetic impurities substituted into a graphene superlattice. Using a first-principles approach, we calculate the electronic and magnetic properties for transition-metal substituted graphene systems with varying spatial separation. These calculations are compared for three different magnetic impurities, manganese, chromium, and vanadium. We determine the electronic band structure, density of states, and Millikan populations (magnetic moment) for each atom, as well as calculate the exchange parameter between the two magnetic atoms as a funct…
