The possibility to make 10 nm scale, and low-disorder, suspended graphene devices would open up many possibilities to study and make use of strongly coupled quantum electronics, quantum mechanics, and optics. We present a versatile method, based on the electromigration of gold-on-graphene bow-tie bridges, to fabricate low-disorder suspended graphene junctions and quantum dots with lengths ranging from 6 nm up to 55 nm. We control the length of the junctions, and shape of their gold contacts by adjusting the power at which the electromigration process is allowed to avalanche. Using carefully engineered gold contacts and a nonuniform downward electrostatic force, we can controllably tear the width of suspended graphene channels from over 100 nm down to 27 nm. We demonstrate that this lateral confinement creates high-quality suspended quantum dots. This fabrication method could be extended to other two-dimensional materials.

Semiconductor coupled quantum dots provide a unique opportunity of tuning bandgaps by tailoring band offsets, making them ideal for photovoltaic and other applications. Here, we have studied stability, trends in the band gap, band offsets, and optical properties for a series of coupled quantum dots comprised of II-VI semiconductor using a hybrid functional method. We have shown how the quantum confinement and interfacial strain considerably affect the band gap and band offsets for these heterostructures at the nanoscale. We show that the trend in band offsets obtained from our first-principles…
Emerging applications of self-assembled semiconductor quantum dot (QD)-based nonclassical light sources emitting in the telecom C-band (1530 to 1565 nm) present challenges in terms of controlled synthesis of their low-density ensembles, critical for device processing with an isolated QD. This work shows how to control the surface density and size of InAs/InP quantum dots over a wide range by tailoring the conditions of Stranski-Krastanow growth. We demonstrate that in the near-critical growth regime, the density of quantum dots can be tuned between $10^7$ and $10^{10} cm^{-2}$. Furthermore, em…
Quantum gates between spin qubits can be implemented leveraging the natural Heisenberg exchange interaction between two electrons in contact with each other. This interaction is controllable by electrically tailoring the overlap between electronic wavefunctions in quantum dot systems, as long as they occupy neighbouring dots. An alternative route is the exploration of superexchange - the coupling between remote spins mediated by a third idle electron that bridges the distance between quantum dots. We experimentally demonstrate direct exchange coupling and provide evidence for second neighbour …
Quantum photonics technologies like wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) for high-rate quantum key distribution require narrowband, spectrally tunable single photon emitters. Physical methods that rely on the application of large mechanical strain to epitaxial quantum dots or electric and magnetic fields to color centers in 2D metal dichalcogenides provide limited spectral tunability. Here we adopt a chemical approach to synthesize a family of colloidal mixed-cation perovskite quantum dots ($\text{Cs}_{1-x}\text{FA}_{x}\text{PbBr}_3$) that show highly photo-stable, compositionally tunable si…
We investigate the generation of entanglement through a quantum dot molecule under the influence of vibrational phonon modes in a bias voltage junction. The molecular quantum dot system is realized by coupled quantum dots inside a suspended carbon nanotube. We consider the dynamical entanglement as a function of bias voltage and temperature by taking into account the electron-phonon interaction. In order to generate the robust entanglement between quantum dots and preserve it to reach the maximal achievable amount steadily, we introduce an asymmetric coupling protocol and apply the easy tunabl…

Transport and thermoelectric properties of finite textured graphene nanoribbons (t-GNRs) connected to electrodes with various coupling strengths are theoretically studied in the framework of the tight-binding model and Green's function approach. Due to quantum constriction induced by the indented edges, such t-GNRs behave like serially-coupled graphene quantum dots (SGQDs). These types of SGQDs can be formed by tailoring zigzag GNRs (ZGNRs) or armchair GNRs (AGNRs). Their bandwidths and gaps can be engineered by varying the size of the quantum dot and the neck width at indented edges. Effects …
