We investigate the rectification of heat current carried by electrons through a double quantum dot (DQD) system under a temperature bias. The DQD can be realized by molecules such as suspended carbon nanotube and be described by the Anderson-Holstein model in presence of electron-phonon interaction. Strong electron-phonon interaction can lead to formation of polaronic states in which electronic states are dressed by phonon cloud. Dressed tunneling approximation (DTA), which is nonperturbative in dealing with strong electron-phonon interaction, is employed to obtain the heat current expression. In DTA, self-energies are dressed by phonon cloud operator and are temperature dependent. The temperature dependency of imaginary part of dressed retarded self-energy gives rise to the asymmetry of the system and is the necessary condition of thermal rectification. On top of this, one can either tune DQD effective energy levels such that $|\barε_1|\neq |\barε_2|$ or have asymmetric dot-lead couplings to achieve thermal rectification. We numerically find that increasing electron-phonon coupling and reducing inter dot coupling can both improve thermal rectification effect, while the electronic heat current is reduced.
We study theoretically the transport properties of a molecular two level system with large electron-vibron coupling in the Coulomb blockade regime. We show that when the electron-vibron coupling induces polaron states, the current-voltage characteristic becomes strongly asymmetric because, in one current direction, one of the polaron state blocks the current through the other. This situation occurs when the coupling between the polaron states is smaller than the coupling to the leads. We discuss the relevance of our calculation for experiments on C_140 molecules.
We derive a formula describing the adiabatically pumped charge through an interacting quantum dot within the scattering matrix and Green's function approach. We show that when the tunneling rates between the leads and the dot are varied adiabatically in time, both in modulus and phase, the current induced in the dot consists of two terms, the pumping current and a rectification-like term. The last contribution arises from the time-derivative of the tunneling phase and can have even or odd parity with respect to the pumping phase φ. The rectification-like term is also discussed in relation to s…
The nonlinear thermoelectric properties of serially coupled quantum dots (SCQDs) embedded in a nanowire connected to metallic electrodes are theoretically studied in the Coulomb blockade regime. We demonstrate that the electron heat current of SCQDs exhibit a direction-dependent behavior (heat rectification) in an asymmetrical structure in which the electron Coulomb interactions are significant. The phonon thermal conductivity of the nanowire is also calculated, which is used to estimate the phonon heat current. Finally, we discuss how to reduce phonon heat current to allow observation of elec…
We investigate theoretically and experimentally the statistical properties of dc current through an open quantum dot subject to ac excitation of a shape-defining gate. The symmetries of rectification current and photovoltaic current with respect to applied magnetic field are examined. Theory and experiment are found to be in good agreement throughout a broad range of frequency and ac power, ranging from adiabatic to nonadiabatic regimes.
The transport properties of serially coupled quantum dots (SCQDs) embedded in a matrix connected to metallic electrodes are theoretically studied in the linear and nonlinear regimes. The current rectification and negative differential conductance of SCQDs under the Pauli spin blockade condition are attributed to the combination of bias-direction dependent probability weight and off-resonant energy levels yielded by the applied bias across the junctions. We observe the spin-polarization current rectification under the Zeeman effect. The maximum spin-polarization current occurs in the forward bi…
We present evidence of magnetic ordering in type-II (Zn, Mn) Te quantum dots. This ordering is attributed to the formation of bound magnetic polarons caused by the exchange interaction between the strongly localized holes and Mn within the dots. In our photoluminescence studies, the magnetic polarons are detected at temperatures up to ~ 200 K, with a binding energy of ~ 40 meV. In addition, these dots display an unusually small Zeeman shift with applied field (2 meV at 10 T). This behavior is explained by a small and weakly temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility due to anti-ferromagneti…
We report mesoscopic dc current generation in an open chaotic quantum dot with ac excitation applied to one of the shape-defining gates. For excitation frequencies large compared to the inverse dwell time of electrons in the dot (i.e., GHz), we find mesoscopic fluctuations of induced current that are fully asymmetric in the applied perpendicular magnetic field, as predicted by recent theory. Conductance, measured simultaneously, is found to be symmetric in field. In the adiabatic (i.e., MHz) regime, in contrast, the induced current is always symmetric in field, suggesting its origin is mesosco…
Magnetic semiconductor quantum dots with a few carriers represent an interesting model system where ferromagnetic interactions can be tuned by voltage. By designing the geometry of a doped quantum dot, one can tailor the anisotropic quantum states of magnetic polarons. The strong anisotropy of magnetic polaron states in disk-like quantum dots with holes comes from the spin splitting in the valence band. The binding energy and spontaneous magnetization of quantum dots oscillate with the number of particles and reflect the shell structure. Due to the Coulomb interaction, the maximum binding ener…
We propose a model of magnetic polaron formation in semiconductor quantum dots doped with magnetic ions. A wetting layer serves as a reservoir of photo-generated holes, which can be trapped by the adjacent quantum dots. For certain hole densities, the temperature dependence of the magnetization induced by the trapped holes is reentrant: it disappears for some temperature range and reappears at higher temperatures. We demonstrate that this peculiar effect is not an artifact of the mean field approximation and persists after statistical spin fluctuations are accounted for. We predict fingerprint…
We investigate the statistical fluctuations of currents in chaotic quantum dots induced by pumping and rectification at finite temperature and in the presence of dephasing. In open quantum dots, dc currents can be generated by the action of two equal-frequency ac gate voltages. The adiabatic regime occurs when the driving frequency is smaller than the electron inverse dwell time. Using numerical simulations complemented by semiclassical calculations, we consider both limits of small and large number of propagating channels in the leads when time-reversal symmetry is fully broken. We find that …
We study heat rectification through quantum dots in the Coulomb blockade regime using a master equation approach. We consider both cases of two-terminal and four-terminal devices. In the two-terminal configuration, we analyze the case of a single quantum dot with either a doubly-degenerate level or two non-degenerate levels. In the sequential tunneling regime we analyze the behaviour of heat currents and rectification as functions of the position of the energy levels and of the temperature bias. In particular, we derive an upper bound for rectification in the closed-circuit setup with the doub…
The contribution to the biexciton binding energy in quantum dots resulting from the interaction with longitudinal optical phonons is estimated by performing the configuration--interaction calculation of the few-particle states in a simple model of the confining potential and including the phonon corrections by means of a perturbation theory. It is found that the polaron contribution tends to compensate the Coulomb-related biexciton shift (binding energy) and reduces its value by several to even 30%, depending on the material parameters of the system.
While time-dependent perturbation theory shows inefficient carrier-phonon scattering in semiconductor quantum dots, we demonstrate that a quantum kinetic description of carrier-phonon interaction predicts fast carrier capture and relaxation. The considered processes do not fulfill energy conservation in terms of free-carrier energies because polar coupling of localized quantum-dot states strongly modifies this picture.
In this work, we present a theoretical study of polaron states in a double quantum dot system. We present realistic calculations which combine 8 band \kp model, configuration interaction approach and collective modes method. We investigate the dependence of polaron energy branches on axial electric field. We show that coupling between carriers and longitudinal optical phonons via Fröhlich interaction leads to qualitative and quantitative reconstruction of the optical spectra. In particular, we study the structure of resonances between the states localized in different dots. We show that $p$-sh…
We present a theoretical investigation of the optical properties of polaronic excitons in stacked self-assembled quantum dots, which is based on the non-adiabatic approach. A parallelepiped-shaped quantum dot is considered as a model for a self-assembled quantum dot in a stack. The exciton-phonon interaction is taken into account for all phonon modes specific for these quantum dots (bulk-like, half-space and interface phonons). We show that the coupling between stacked quantum dots can lead to a strong enhancement of the optical absorption in the spectral ranges characteristic for phonon satel…
We study phonon-assisted dephasing in optically excited semiconductor quantum dots within the frameworks of the independent Boson model and optimal control. Using a realistic description for the quantum dot states and the phonon coupling, we demonstrate that such dephasing has a drastic impact on the coherent optical response. We employ optimal control theory to search for control strategies that allow to fight decoherence, and show that appropriate tailoring of laser pulses allows a complete control of the optical excitation despite the phonon dephasing.
We theoretically examine the effects of polaron formation in quantum dots on the transport properties. When a separation between two electron-levels in a quantum dot matches the energy of the longitudinal optical (LO) phonons, the polarons are strongly formed. The Rabi splitting between the levels is observable in a peak structure of the differential conductance G as a function of the bias voltage. The polaron formation suppresses the peak height of G, which is due to the competition between the resonant tunneling (resonance between a level in the dot and states in the leads) and the polaron f…
We study the second-order polaronic resonance between 2-LO-phonon states and p-shell electron states in a quantum dot. We show that the spectrum in the resonance area can be quantitatively reproduced by a theoretical model using only standard material constants, without any free parameters. We propose also a perturbative approach to the problem based on a quasi-degenerate perturbation theory. This method not only considerably reduces the numerical complexity without considerable loss of accuracy but also gives some insight into the structure and origin of the resonance spectrum.
Motivated by recent experiments on electric transport through single molecules and quantum dots, we investigate a model for transport that allows for significant coupling between the electrons and a boson mode isolated on the molecule or dot. We focus our attention on the temperature dependent properties of the transport. In the Holstein picture for polaronic transport in molecular crystals the temperature dependence of the conductivity exhibits a crossover from coherent (band) to incoherent (hopping) transport. Here, the temperature dependence of the differential conductance on resonance does…
We investigate the electronic transport through a suspended carbon-nanotube quantum dot. In the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the nanotube and a nearby metallic gate, two forces act on the electrons: the Laplace and the electrostatic force. They both induce coupling between the electrons and the mechanical transverse oscillation modes. We find that the difference between the two mechanisms appears in the cotunneling current.
We theoretically study the optical properties of an InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) near the area of the second-order resonance between an electron confined in the QD and two longitudinal optical phonons. We present the absorption spectra of an inhomogeneously broadened QD ensemble and show that the minimal model needed for an accurate description of such a system needs to account for 3-phonon states. We study also the influence of the QD height to width ratio on the optical properties of the polaron system. The dependence of the width of the resonance and the position of the second-order resonant …
Here we study the polaronic transport through molecules weakly connected to metallic electrodes in the nonlinear response regime. Molecule itself is treated as a quantum dot with discrete energy levels, its connection to the electrodes is described within the wide-band approximation, while the charging is incorporated by means of the self-consistent potential. Nonperturbative computational scheme, used in this work, is based on the Green's function theory within the framework of mapping technique (GFT-MT). This method transforms the many-body electron-phonon interaction problem into a one-body…
The electrical conductance, thermal conductance, thermal power and figure of merit (ZT) of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) embedded into an insulator matrix connected with metallic electrodes are theoretically investigated in the Coulomb blockade regime. The multilevel Anderson model is used to simulate the multiple QDs junction system. The charge and heat currents in the sequential tunneling process are calculated by the Keldysh Green function technique. In the linear response regime the ZT values are still very impressive in the small tunneling rates case, although the effect of electron Co…
The theory of exciton coupling to photons and LO phonons in quantum dots (QDs) and quantum-dot molecules (QDMs) is presented. Resonant-round trips of the exciton between the ground (bright) and excited (dark or bright) states mediated by the LO-phonon alter the decay time and yield the Rabi oscillation. The initial distributions of the population in the ground and the excited states dominate the oscillating amplitude and frequency. This property provides a detectable signature to the information stored in a qubit made from QD or QDM for a wide range of temperature T. Our results presented here…
We calculate the lifetime of conduction band excited states in self-assembled quantum dots by taking into account LO-phonon-electron interaction and various anharmonic phonon couplings. We show that polaron relaxation cannot be accurately described by a semi-classical model. The contributions of different anharmonic decay channels are shown to depend strongly on the polaron energy. We calculate the energy dependence of polaron lifetime and compare our results to available experimental measurements of polaron decay time in InAs/GaAs quantum dots.
We calculate a current rectification by molecules containing a conjugated molecular group sandwiched between two saturated (insulating) molecular groups of different length (molecular quantum dot) using an ab-initio non-equilibrium Green's function method. In particular, we study S-(CH2)m-C10H6-(CH2)n-S dithiol with Naphthalene as a conjugated central group. The rectification current ratio ~35 has been observed at m = 2 and n = 10, due to resonant tunneling through the molecular orbital (MO) closest to the electrode Fermi level (lowest unoccupied MO in the present case). The rectification is l…
We used continuous wave photoluminescence (cw-PL) and time resolved photoluminescence (TR-PL) spectroscopy to compare the properties of magnetic polarons (MP) in two related spatially indirect II-VI epitaxially grown quantum dot systems. In the ZnTe/(Zn,Mn)Se system the holes are confined in the non-magnetic ZnTe quantum dots (QDs), and the electrons reside in the magnetic (Zn,Mn)Se matrix. On the other hand, in the (Zn,Mn)Te/ZnSe system, the holes are confined in the magnetic (Zn,Mn)Te QDs, while the electrons remain in the surrounding non-magnetic ZnSe matrix. The magnetic polaron formation …
We study the formation dynamics of a spontaneous ferromagnetic order in single self-assembled CdMnTe quantum dots. By measuring time-resolved photoluminescence, we determine the formation times for QDs with Mn ion contents x varying from 0.01 to 0.2. At low x these times are orders of magnitude longer than exciton spin relaxation times evaluated from the decay of photoluminescence circular polarization. This allows us to conclude that the direction of the spontaneous magnetization is determined by a momentary Mn spin fluctuation rather than resulting from an optical orientation. At higher x, t…
Luminescence properties of colloidal quantum dots have found applications in imaging, light-sources, and displays. Despite wide interest, several experimental observations from these quantum dots, such as the short lifetime on the scale of microseconds and a zero-longitudinal optical phonon line in low-temperature photoluminescence spectrum, remain unexplained by existing models. Here we propose a model including the effect of solid-state environment on luminescence by capturing coherent and incoherent interactions of band-edge exciton with phonon modes. Our model predicts the formation of dre…
Based on the multiple energy level Anderson model, this study theoretically examines the thermoelectric effects of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) in the nonlinear response regime. The charge and heat currents in the sequential tunneling process are calculated by using the Keldysh Green's function technique. Results show that the thermal rectification effect can be observed in a multiple QD junction system, whereas the tunneling rate, size fluctuation, and location distribution of QD significantly influence the rectification efficiency.
We report on a high resolution x-ray diffraction study unveiling the effect of carriers optically injected into (In,Ga)As quantum dots on the surrounding GaAs crystal matrix. We find a tetragonal lattice expansion with enhanced elongation along the [001] crystal axis that is superimposed on an isotropic lattice extension. The isotropic contribution arises from excitation induced lattice heating as confirmed by temperature dependent reference studies. The tetragonal expansion on the femtometer scale is attributed to polaron formation by carriers trapped in the quantum dots.
The quantum dot arrays (QDAs) embedded into inhomogeneous nanowires connected to metallic electrodes show an electron heat rectification effect, which is attributed to the thermal voltage arising from a temperature bias and the QDA with a broken spatial inversion symmetry. The staircase energy levels of QDAs can be controlled to the resonant and off resonant transports for electrons in the forward and backward temperature biases, respectively. The effect of electron Coulomb interactions on the rectification efficiency of heat diode is clarified by the case of double QDs. We find that it is imp…
Polaron dephasing processes are investigated in InAs/GaAs dots using far-infrared transient four wave mixing (FWM) spectroscopy. We observe an oscillatory behaviour in the FWM signal shortly (< 5 ps) after resonant excitation of the lowest energy conduction band transition due to coherent acoustic phonon generation. The subsequent single exponential decay yields long intraband dephasing times of 90 ps. We find excellent agreement between our measured and calculated FWM dynamics, and show that both real and virtual acoustic phonon processes are necessary to explain the temperature dependence of…
We compare standard perturbation theory with the polaron transformation for non-linear transport of electrons through a two-level system. For weak electron-phonon coupling and large bias, there is good agreement between both approaches. This regime has recently been explored in experiments in double quantum dots.
We consider the steady-state thermoelectric transport through a vibrating molecular quantum dot that is contacted to macroscopic leads. For moderate electron-phonon interaction strength and comparable electronic and phononic timescales, we investigate the impact of the formation of a local polaron on the thermoelectric properties of the junction. We apply a variational Lang-Firsov transformation and solve the equations of motion in the Kadanoff-Baym formalism up to second order in the dot-lead coupling parameter. We calculate the thermoelectric current and voltage for finite temperature differ…
We provide a theory for the effects of polarons and phonons in mediating and suppressing the quantum tunneling of electrons into single molecules of conducting polymers, motivated by experiments on molecular quantum dots. The effects of both phonons and excitations of the polaron particle-in-a-box excitations are calculated. Using both the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model of polyacetylene and direct density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, we calculate the suppression of ground--state to ground--state transitions and the position and strength of the side-bands.
Devices for nano- and molecular size electronics are currently a focus of research aimed at an efficient current rectification and switching. Current switching due to conformational changes in the molecules is slow, on the order of a few kHz. Fast switching on the order of 1 THz may be achieved, at least in principle, in a degenerate molecular quantum dot with strong coupling of electrons with vibrational excitations. We show that the mean-field approach fails to properly describe intrinsic molecular switching and present an exact solution to the problem.
The ground-state energy, the addition energies and the optical absorption spectra are derived for interacting polarons in parabolic quantum dots in three and two dimensions. A path integral formalism for identical particles is used in order to take into account the fermion statistics. The approach is applied to both closed-shell and open-shell systems of interacting polarons. Using a generalization of the Jensen-Feynman variational principle, the ground-state energy of a confined N-polaron system is analyzed as a function of N and of the electron-phonon coupling constant. As distinct from the …
Attractive electron correlations due to an electron-vibron interaction (EVI) can overcome the direct Coulomb repulsion of polarons in strongly deformable molecular quantum dots (MQDs). If it realizes, a switching appears in the I-V characteristics of the degenerate nonadiabatic molecular bridges weakly coupled to electrodes providing a route to ultrafast `memristors' (memory-resistors) as the basis for future oscillators, amplifers, and other important circuit elements. Here, we extend our theory of polaronic memristors to adiabatic MQDs strongly coupled to the leads and show that the degenera…
We study the time-dependent transport of charge and spin through a ring-shaped region sequentially coupled to a weakly interacting quantum dot in the presence of an Aharonov-Bohm flux and spin-orbit interaction. The time-dependent modulation of the spin-orbit interaction, or of the corresponding Aharonov-Casher flux, together with the modulation of the dot-level induces an electrically pumped spin current even in absence of a charge current. The results beyond the adiabatic regime show that an additional rectification current proportional to \cos(ϕ), being ϕthe relative phase between the time …
Here we present a theoretical analysis of the effect of inelastic electron scattering on spin-dependent transport characteristics (conductance, current-voltage dependence, magnetoresistance, shot noise spectrum, Fano factor) for magnetic nanojunction. Such device is composed of molecular quantum dot (with discrete energy levels)connected to ferromagnetic electrodes (treated within the wide-band approximation), where molecular vibrations are modeled as dispersionless phonons. Non-perturbative computational scheme, used in this work, is based on the Green's function theory within the framework o…
We investigate the nonlinear current-voltage characteristic of mesoscopic conductors and the current generated through rectification of an alternating external bias. To leading order in applied voltages both the nonlinear and the rectified current are quadratic. This current response can be described in terms of second order conductance coefficients and for a generic mesoscopic conductor they fluctuate randomly from sample to sample. Due to Coulomb interactions the symmetry of transport under magnetic field inversion is broken in a two-terminal setup. Therefore, we consider both the symmetric …
Polaron and bipolaron formation in the Holstein-Hubbard model with harmonic confinement potential, relevant to quantum dot structures, is investigated in one to three dimensions by means of unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The discrete nature of the lattice and quantum phonon effects are fully taken into account. The dependence on phonon frequency, Coulomb repulsion, confinement strength (dot size) and electron-phonon interaction strength is studied over a wide range of parameter values. Confinement is found to reduce the size of (bi-)polarons at a given coupling strength, to reduce t…
The effect of external electric field on electron-hole correlation in GaAs quantum dots is investigated. The electron-hole Schrodinger equation in the presence of external electric field is solved using explicitly correlated full configuration interaction (XCFCI) method and accurate exciton binding energy and electron-hole recombination probability are obtained. The effect of the electric field was included in the 1-particle single component basis functions by performing variational polaron transformation. The quality of the wavefunction at small inter-particle distances was improved by using …
It is illustrated that semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) embedded into an insulating matrix connected with metallic electrodes and some vacuum space can lead to significant thermal rectification effect. A multilevel Anderson model is used to investigate the thermal rectification properties of the multiple-QD junction. The charge and heat currents in the tunneling process are calculated via the Keldysh Green's function technique. We show that pronounced thermal rectification and negative differential thermal conductance (NDTC) behaviors can be observed for the multiple-QD junction with asymmetri…
We describe the electronic properties of a double dot for which the lateral coupling between the two vertical dots can be controlled in-situ with a center gate voltage (Vc) and the current flows through the two dots in series. When Vc is large and positive, the two dots merge. As Vc is made less positive, two dots are formed whose coupling is reduced. We measure charging diagrams for positive and negative source-drain voltages in the weak coupling regime and observe current rectification due to the Pauli spin blockade when the hyperfine interaction between the electrons and the nuclei is suppr…
Low-temperature measurements of asymmetric carbon nanotube (CNT) quantum dots are reported. The CNTs are end-contacted with one ferromagnetic and one normal-metal electrode. The measurements show a spin-dependent rectification of the current caused by the asymmetry of the device. This rectification occurs for gate voltages for which the normal-metal lead is resonant with a level of the quantum dot. At the gate voltages at which the current is at the maximum current, a significant decrease in the current shot noise is observed.
Quantum thermal transport in two-quantum-dot system with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DM interaction) has been studied. The sign of thermal rectification can be controlled through changing the energy splitting or the DM interaction strength. The anisotropic term in the system can also affect the sign of rectification. Compared with other proposals [Phys. Rev. B 80, 172301 (2009)], our model can offer larger rectification efficiency and show the potential application in designing the polarity-controllable thermal diode with a small size system (N=2). Moreover, quantum correlations of two-…
To describe the interaction of molecular vibrations with electrons at a quantum dot contacted to metallic leads, we extend an analytical approach that we previously developed for the many-polaron problem. Our scheme is based on an incomplete variational Lang-Firsov transformation, combined with a perturbative calculation of the electron-phonon self-energy in the framework of generalised Matsubara functions. This allows us to describe the system at weak to strong coupling and intermediate to large phonon frequencies. We present results for the quantum dot spectral function and for the kinetic c…
Charge-neutral excitons in semiconductor quantum dots have a small finite energy separation caused by the anisotropic exchange splitting. Coherent excitation of neutral excitons will generally excite both exciton components, unless the excitation is parallel to one of the dipole axes. We present a polaron master equation model to describe two-exciton pumping using a coherent continuous wave pump field in the presence of a realistic anisotropic exchange splitting. We predict a five-peak incoherent spectrum, thus generalizing the Mollow triplet to become a Mollow quintuplet. We experimentally co…
The effect of long distance coherent tunneling (LDCT) on the charge and heat currents in serially coupled triple quantum dots (TQDs) connected to electrodes is illustrated by using a combination of the extended Hurbbard model and Anderson model. The charge and heat currents are calculated with a closed-form Landauer expression for the transmission coefficient suitable for the Coulomb blockade regime. The physical parameters including bias-dependent quantum dot energy levels, electron Coulomb interactions, and electron hopping strengths are calculated in the framework of effective mass theory f…
We report on resonant optical spectroscopy of self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots in which the number of electrons can accurately be tuned to N=0,1,2 by an external gate voltage. Polarization, wave vector and magnetic field dependent measurements enable us to clearly distinguish between resonant Raman and resonant photoluminescence processes. The Raman spectra for N=1 and 2 electrons considerably differ from each other. In particular, for N=2, the quantum-dot He, the spectra exhibit both singlet and triplet transitions reflecting the elementary many-particle interaction. Also the resonant photo…
Rectification of thermal fluctuations in mesoscopic conductors is the key idea of today's attempts to build nanoscale thermoelectric energy harvesters in order to convert heat into a useful electric power. So far, most concepts make use of the Seebeck effect in a two-terminal geometry where heat and charge are both carried by the same particles. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the working principle of a new kind of energy harvester, proposed recently using two capacitively coupled quantum dots. We show that due to its novel three-terminal design which spatially separates the heat reservoir…
Double quantum dots can provide an experimental realization of the 2 impurity Kondo model which exhibits a non-Fermi liquid quantum critical point (QCP) at a special value of its parameters. We generalize our recent study of double quantum dots in series \cite{Sela08} to a parallel configuration with an Aharonov-Bohm flux. We present an exact universal result for the finite temperature and finite voltage conductance $G[V,T]$ along the crossover from the QCP to the low energy Fermi liquid phase. Compared to the series configuration, here generically $G[V,T] \ne G[-V,T]$, leading to current rect…
Piezoelectric energy harvester scavenges mechanical vibrations and generates electricity. Researchers have strived to optimize the electromechanical structures and to design necessary external power management circuits, aiming to deliver high power and rectified outputs ready for serving as batteries. Complex deformation of the mechanical structure results in charges with opposite polarities appearing on same surface, leading to current loss in the attached metal electrode. External power management circuits such as rectifiers comprise diodes that consume power and have undesirable forward bia…
There is a growing understanding that transport properties of complex oxides and individual molecules are dominated by polaron physics. In superconducting oxides the long-range Froehlich and short-range Jahn-Teller electron-phonon interactions bind carriers into real space pairs - small bipolarons with surprisingly low mass but sufficient binding energy, while the long-range Coulomb repulsion keeps bipolarons apart preventing their clustering. The bipolaron theory numerically explains high Tc values without any fitting parameters and describes other key features of the cuprates. The same appro…
