We prove a motivic stabilization result for the cohomology of the local systems on configuration spaces of varieties over $\mathbb{C}$ attached to character polynomials. Our approach interprets the stabilization as a probabilistic phenomenon based on the asymptotic independence of certain *motivic random variables*, and gives explicit universal formulas for the limits in terms of the exponents of a motivic Euler product for the Kapranov zeta function. The result can be thought of as a weak but explicit version of representation stability for the cohomology of ordered configuration spaces. In the sequel we find similar stability results in spaces of smooth hypersurface sections, providing new examples to be investigated through the lens of representation stability for symmetric, symplectic and orthogonal groups.
We prove geometric and cohomological stabilization results for the universal smooth degree $d$ hypersurface section of a fixed smooth projective variety as $d$ goes to infinity. We show that relative configuration spaces of the universal smooth hypersurface section stabilize in the completed Grothendieck ring of varieties, and deduce from this the stabilization of the Hodge Euler characteristic of natural families of local systems constructed from the vanishing cohomology. We prove explicit formulas for the stable values using a probabilistic interpretation, along with the natural analogs in p…
We calculate the equivariant motivic Chern class for configuration space of a quasiprojective (maybe singular) variety and the space of vectors with different directions. We prove the formulas for generating series of these classes. We generalize the localization theorems results about Bialynicki-Birula decomposition to acquire some stability for the motivic Chern classes of configuration spaces.
We present a general, functorial approach to Motivic Integration for separated schemes of finite type in lieu of recent work by Hans Schoutens on the subject. Presented is a change of variables formula and a hierarchy of stability properties which are closely connected to the integrability of Motivic functions for schemes. Most notably, we prove that if a scheme has smooth reduction then it has a natural geometric definition of motivic volume in the Grothendick ring of the formal motivic site.
We compute the motivic Donaldson-Thomas theory of the resolved conifold, in all chambers of the space of stability conditions of the corresponding quiver. The answer is a product formula whose terms depend on the position of the stability vector, generalizing known results for the corresponding numerical invariants. Our formulae imply in particular a motivic form of the DT/PT correspondence for the resolved conifold. The answer for the motivic PT series is in full agreement with the prediction of the refined topological vertex formalism.
We define new invariants of 3d Calabi-Yau categories endowed with a stability structure. Intuitively, they count the number of semistable objects with fixed class in the K-theory of the category ("number of BPS states with given charge" in physics language). Formally, our motivic DT-invariants are elements of quantum tori over a version of the Grothendieck ring of varieties over the ground field. Via the quasi-classical limit "as the motive of affine line approaches to 1" we obtain numerical DT-invariants which are closely related to those introduced by Behrend. We study some properties of bot…
We study the structure of the rational motivic stable homotopy category over general base schemes. Our first class of results concerns the six operations: we prove absolute purity, stability of constructible objects, and Grothendieck-Verdier duality for SH_Q. Next, we prove that SH_Q is canonically SL-oriented; we compare SH_Q with the category of rational Milnor-Witt motives; and we relate the rational bivariant A^1-theory to Chow-Witt groups. These results are derived from analogous statements for the minus part of SH[1/2].
We categorify the inclusion-exclusion principle for partially ordered topological spaces and schemes to a filtration on the derived category of sheaves. As a consequence, we obtain functorial spectral sequences that generalize the two spectral sequences of a stratified space and certain Vassiliev-type spectral sequences; we also obtain Euler characteristic analogs in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. As an application, we give an algebro-geometric proof of Vakil and Wood's homological stability conjecture for the space of smooth hypersurface sections of a smooth projective variety. In charac…
The symmetric group S_n acts freely on the configuration space of n distinct points in a quasi-projective variety. In this paper, we study the induced action of the symmetric group S_n on the de Rham cohomology of this space, using mixed Hodge theory, combined with methods from the theory of symmetric functions. (We prove a motivic version of this as well.) As an application of our results, we calculate the S_n-equivariant Hodge polynomial of the Fulton-MacPherson compactification X[n] of the configuration space.
In the present thesis we study the geometry of the moduli spaces of Bradlow-Higgs triples on a smooth projective curve $C$. $(E,φ, s)$ is a Bradlow-Higgs triple if $(E,φ)$ is a Higgs bundle and $s$ is a non-zero global section of $E$. There is a family of stability conditions for triples that depends on a positive real parameter $σ$. The moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_σ^{r,d}$ of $σ$-semistable triples of rank $r$ and degree $d$ vary with $σ$. The phenomenon arising from this is known as wall-crossing. In the first half of the thesis we will examine how the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_σ^{r,d}$ and …
We prove that the factorization homologies of a scheme with coefficients in truncated polynomial algebras compute the cohomologies of its generalized configuration spaces. Using Koszul duality between commutative algebras and Lie algebras, we obtain new expressions for the cohomologies of the latter. As a consequence, we obtain a uniform and conceptual approach for treating homological stability, homological densities, and arithmetic densities of generalized configuration spaces. Our results categorify, generalize, and in fact provide a conceptual understanding of the coincidences appearing in…
We study the rational Chow motives of certain moduli spaces of vector bundles on a smooth projective curve with additional structure (such as a parabolic structure or Higgs field). In the parabolic case, these moduli spaces depend on a choice of stability condition given by weights; our approach is to use explicit descriptions of variation of this stability condition in terms of simple birational transformations (standard flips/flops and Mukai flops) for which we understand the variation of the Chow motives. For moduli spaces of parabolic vector bundles, we describe the change in motive under …
A polarized variety is K-stable if, for any test configuration, the Donaldson-Futaki invariant is positive. In this paper, inspired by classical geometric invariant theory, we describe the space of test configurations as a limit of a direct system of Tits buildings. We show that the Donaldson-Futaki invariant, conveniently normalized, is a continuous function on this space. We also introduce a pseudo-metric on the space of test configurations. Recall that K-stability can be enhanced by requiring that the Donaldson-Futaki invariant is positive on any admissible filtration of the co-ordinate rin…
We contribute to the arithmetic/topology dictionary by relating asymptotic point counts and arithmetic statistics over finite fields to homological stability and representation stability over $\Cb$ in the example of configuration spaces of $n$ points in smooth varieties. To do this, we import the method of homological stability from the realm of topology into the theory of étale cohomology; in particular we give the first examples of stability of étale cohomology groups as Galois representations where the Galois actions are not already explicitly known. We then establish subexponential bounds …
We formulate the problem of renormalization of Feynman integrals and its relation to periods of motives in configuration space instead of momentum space. The algebro-geometric setting is provided by the wonderful compactifications of arrangements of subvarieties associated to the subgraphs of a Feynman graph and a (quasi)projective variety. The motive and the class in the Grothendieck ring are computed explicitly for these wonderful compactifications, in terms of the motive of the variety and the combinatorics of the Feynman graph, using recent results of Li Li. The pullback to the wonderful c…
We introduce a strengthening of K-stability, based on filtrations of the homogeneous coordinate ring. This allows for considering certain limits of families of test-configurations, which arise naturally in several settings. We prove that if a manifold with no automorphisms admits a cscK metric, then it satisfies this stronger stability notion. We also discuss the relation with the birational transformations in the definition of b-stability.
In a symmetric space of noncompact type X = G/K oriented geodesic segments correspond to points in the Euclidean Weyl chamber. We can hence assign vector-valued side-lengths to segments. Our main result is a system of homogeneous linear inequalities describing the restrictions on the side -lengths of closed polygons. The inequalities are based on the mod 2 Schubert calculus in the real Grassmannians G/P for maximal parabolic subgroups P.
For any flat projective family $(\mX,\mL)\rightarrow C$ such that the generic fibre $\mX_η$ is a klt Q-Fano variety and $\mL|_{\mX_η}\sim_{Q}-K_{X_η}$, we use the techniques from the minimal model program (MMP) to modify the total family. The end product is a family such that every fiber is a klt Q-Fano variety. Moreover, we can prove that the Donaldson-Futaki invariants of the appearing models decrease. When the family is a test configuration of a fixed Fano variety $(X,-K_X)$, this implies Tian's conjecture: given $X$ a Fano manifold, to test its K-(semi, poly)stability, we only need to test…
Let $X$ be a compact complex manifold, $L\to X$ an ample line bundle over $X$, and ${\cal H}$ the space of all positively curved metrics on $L$. We show that a pair $(h_0,T)$ consisting of a point $h_0\in {\cal H}$ and a test configuration $T=({\cal L}\to {\cal X}\to {\bf C})$, canonically determines a weak geodesic ray $R(h_0,T)$ in ${\cal H}$ which emanates from $h_0$. Thus a test configuration behaves like a vector field on the space of Kähler potentials ${\cal H}$. We prove that $R$ is non-trivial if the ${\bf C}^\times$ action on $X_0$, the central fiber of $\cal X$, is non-trivial. The r…

This paper continues our previous study of Feynman integrals in configuration spaces and their algebro-geometric and motivic aspects. We consider here both massless and massive Feynman amplitudes, from the point of view of potential theory. We consider a variant of the wonderful compactification of configuration spaces that works simultaneously for all graphs with a given number of vertices and that also accounts for the external structure of Feynman graph. As in our previous work, we consider two version of the Feynman amplitude in configuration space, which we refer to as the real and comple…
We introduce a norm on the space of test configurations, which we call the minimum norm. We conjecture that uniform K-stability with respect to this norm is equivalent to the existence of a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric. This notion of uniform K-stability is analogous to coercivity of the Mabuchi functional. We characterise the triviality of test configurations, by showing that a test configuration has zero minimum norm if and only if it has zero $L^2$-norm, if and only if it is almost trivial. We prove that the existence of a twisted constant scalar curvature Kähler metric implies u…
