We deepen the study of the relations previously established by Mayer, Lewis and Zagier, and the authors, among the eigenfunctions of the transfer operators of the Gauss and the Farey maps, the solutions of the Lewis-Zagier three-term functional equation and the Maass forms on the modular surface $PSL(2,\Z)\backslash \HH$. In particular we introduce an "inverse" of the integral transform studied by Lewis and Zagier, and use it to obtain new series expansions for the Maass cusp forms and the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series restricted to the imaginary axis. As corollaries we obtain further information on the Fourier coefficients of the forms, including a new series expansion for the divisor function.
In this paper, we investigate traces of cycle integrals of certain meromorphic modular forms. By relating them to regularised theta lifts we provide explicit formulae for them in terms of coefficients of harmonic Maass forms.
We prove that Cohen's Maass wave form and Li-Ngo-Rhoades' Maass wave form are Hecke eigenforms with respect to certain Hecke operators. As a corollary, we find new identities of the $p$th coefficients of these Maass wave forms in terms of $p$th root of unities.
We reformulate several known results about continued fractions in combinatorial terms. Among them the theorem of Conway and Coxeter and that of Series, both relating continued fractions and triangulations. More general polygon dissections appear when extending these theorems for elements of the modular group $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. These polygon dissections are interpreted as walks in the Farey tessellation. The combinatorial model of continued fractions can be further developed to obtain a canonical presentation of elements of $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})$.
We investigate a new family of locally harmonic Maass forms which correspond to periods of modular forms. They transform like negative weight modular forms and are harmonic apart from jump singularities along infinite geodesics. Our main result is an explicit splitting of the new locally harmonic Maass forms into a harmonic part and a locally polynomial part that captures the jump singularities. As an application, we obtain finite rational formulas for suitable linear combinations of periods of meromorphic modular forms associated to positive definite binary quadratic forms.
The Farey map is the universal triangular map whose automorphism group is the classical modular group. We study the quotients of the Farey map by the principal congruence subgroups of the modular group. We also study the structure of the underlying graphs of these quotients.
Modular and mock modular forms possess many striking $p$-adic properties, as studied by Bringmann, Guerzhoy, Kane, Kent, Ono, and others. Candelori developed a geometric theory of harmonic Maass forms arising from the de Rham cohomology of modular curves. In the setting of over-convergent $p$-adic modular forms, Candelori and Castella showed this leads to $p$-adic analogs of harmonic Maass forms. In this paper we take an analytic approach to construct $p$-adic analogs of harmonic Maass forms of weight $0$ %and $1/2$ with square free level. Although our approaches differ, where the two theories…
We extend Borcherds' singular theta lift in signature $(1,2)$ to harmonic Maass forms of weight $1/2$ whose non-holomorphic part is allowed to be of exponential growth at $i\infty$. We determine the singularities of the lift and compute its Fourier expansion. It turns out that the lift is continuous but not differentiable along certain geodesics in the upper half-plane corresponding to the non-holomorphic principal part of the input. As an application, we obtain a generalization to higher level of the weight $2$ modular integral of Duke, Imamoglu and Tóth. Further, we construct automorphic pro…
In Monstrous moonshine, genus 0 property and the notion of replicability are strongly connected. With regards to recent developments of moonshine, we investigate a higher genus generalization of replicability for a general automorphic form. Specifically, we extend the definitions of replicates and a Hecke operator to harmonic Maass functions on modular curves of higher genera to obtain number theoretic generalizations of important results in Monstrous moonshine. Furthermore, we show the utility of the extended notions in yielding uniform proofs for numerous arithmetic properties of Fourier coe…
In this paper we investigate the Fourier coefficients of harmonic Maass forms of negative half-integral weight. We relate the algebraicity of these coefficients to the algebraicity of the coefficients of certain canonical meromorphic modular forms of positive even weight with poles at Heegner divisors. Moreover, we give an explicit formula for the coefficients of harmonic Maass forms in terms of periods of certain meromorphic modular forms with algebraic coefficients.
The classical Maass lift is a map from holomorphic Jacobi forms to holomorphic scalar-valued Siegel modular forms. Automorphic representation theory predicts a non-holomorphic and vector-valued analogue for Hecke eigenforms. This paper is the first part of a series of papers. In this series of papers, we provide an explicit construction of the non-holomorphic Maass lift that is linear and also applies to non-eigenforms. In this first part, we develop new techniques to study Fourier series expansions of Siegel modular forms, which allow us to construct a Maass lift from harmonic Maass-Jacobi fo…
We prove identities between cycle integrals of non-holomorphic modular forms arising from applications of various differential operators to weak Maass forms.
Duke, Imamoglu, and Toth constructed a polyharmonic Maass form of level 4 whose Fourier coefficients encode real quadratic class numbers. A more general construction of such forms was subsequently given by Bruinier, Funke, and Imamoglu. Here we give a direct construction of such a form for the full modular group and study the properties of its coefficients. We give interpretations of the coefficients of the holomorphic parts of each of these polyharmonic Maass forms as inner products of certain weakly holomorphic modular forms and harmonic Maass forms. The coefficients of square index are part…
In this article, we prove an omega-result for the Hecke eigenvalues $λ_F(n)$ of Maass forms $F$ which are Hecke eigenforms in the space of Siegel modular forms of weight $k$, genus two for the Siegel modular group $Sp_2(\Z)$. In particular, we prove $$ λ_F(n)= Ω(n^{k-1}\text{exp} (c \frac{\sqrt{\log n}}{\log\log n})), $$ when $c>0$ is an absolute constant. This improves the earlier result $$ λ_F(n)= Ω(n^{k-1} (\frac{\sqrt{\log n}}{\log\log n})) $$ of Das and the third author. We also show that for any $n \ge 3$, one has $$ λ_F(n) \leq n^{k-1}\text{exp} \left(c_1\sqrt{\frac{\log n}{\log\log n}}…
We investigate the numerical computation of Maass cusp forms for the modular group corresponding to large eigenvalues. We present Fourier coefficients of two cusp forms whose eigenvalues exceed r=40000. These eigenvalues are the largest that have so far been found in the case of the modular group. They are larger than the 130millionth eigenvalue.
Let $q:=e^{2 πiz}$, where $z \in \mathbb{H}$. For an even integer $k$, let $f(z):=q^h\prod_{m=1}^{\infty}(1-q^m)^{c(m)}$ be a meromorphic modular form of weight $k$ on $Γ_0(N)$. For a positive integer $m$, let $T_m$ be the $m$th Hecke operator and $D$ be a divisor of a modular curve with level $N$. Both subjects, the exponents $c(m)$ of a modular form and the distribution of the points in the support of $T_m. D$, have been widely investigated. When the level $N$ is one, Bruinier, Kohnen, and Ono obtained, in terms of the values of $j$-invariant function, identities between the exponents $c(m)$…
It is known that among Siegel modular forms of degree $2$ and level $1$ the only functions that violate the Ramanujan conjecture are Saito-Kurokawa lifts of modular forms of level $1$. These are precisely the functions whose Fourier coefficients satisfy Maass relations. More generally, the Ramanujan conjecture for $\mathrm{GSp}_4$ is predicted to fail only in case of CAP representations. It is not known though whether the associated Siegel modular forms (of various levels) still satisfy a version of Maass relations. We show that this is indeed the case for the ones related to P-CAP representat…

We revisit some papers by Eichler and Shimura in order to give an algebraic formulation (based on Farey symbols) for the intersection product on the space of modular symbols, as described by Pollack and Stevens. We define the period homomorphism of an Eisenstein series (Eisenstein-Dedekind-Stevens symbol) and extend the definition of the intersection product to these objects. We construct a computationally convenient basis for the space of Eisenstein series for $Γ$ 0 (N) with rational periods. Given a Farey symbol for a subgroup $Γ$ of the modular group and a subgroup $Γ$ ' of finite index of …
For an imaginary quadratic field $K$ of discriminant $-D$, let $χ= χ_K$ be the associated quadratic character. We will show that the space of special hermitian Jacobi forms of level $N$ is isomorphic to the space of plus forms of level $DN$ and nebentypus $χ$ (the hermitian analogue of Kohnen's plus space) for any integer $N$ prime to $D$. This generalizes the results of Krieg from $N = 1$ to arbitrary level. Combining this isomorphism with the recent work of Berger and Klosin and a modification of Ikeda's construction we prove the existence of a lift from the space of elliptic modular forms t…
We give a construction of a new $p$-adic Maass-Shimura operator defined on an affinoid subdomain of the preperfectoid $p$-adic universal cover $\mathcal{Y}$ of a modular curve $Y$. We define a new notion of $p$-adic modular forms as sections of a certain sheaf $\mathcal{O}_Δ$ of "nearly rigid functions" which transform under the action of subgroups of the Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathcal{Y}/Y)$ by $\mathcal{O}_Δ^{\times}$-valued weight characters. This extends Katz's notion of $p$-adic modular forms as functions on the Igusa tower $Y^{\mathrm{Ig}}$; indeed we may recover Katz's theory by re…
In this paper, we study non-trivial upper bounds for the sum $\sum \limits_{n \in S} |λ_f(n)|$ where $f$ is a normalized Maass eigencusp form for the full modular group, $λ_f(n)$ is the $n$th normalized Fourier coefficient of $f$ and $S$ is a proper subset of positive integers in $[1,x]$ with certain properties.
