Computation of Maass Waveforms with Non-trivial Multiplier Systems

The aim of this paper is to describe efficient algorithms for computing Maass waveforms on subgroups of the modular group PSL(2,Z) with general multiplier systems and real weight. A selection of numerical results obtained with these algorithms is also presented. Certain operators acting on the spaces of interest are also discussed. The specific phenomena that were investigated include the Shimura correspondence for Maass waveforms and the behavior of the weight-k Laplace spectra for the modular surface as the weight approaches 0.

A spectral correspondence for Maass waveforms

Let O^1 be a (cocompact) Fuchsian group, given as the group of units of norm one in a maximal order O in an indefinite quaternion division algebra over Q. Using the (classical) Selberg trace formula, we show that the eigenvalues of the automorphic Laplacian for O^1 and their multiplicities coincide with the eigenvalues and multiplicities of the Laplacian defined on the Maass newforms for the Hecke congruence group Gamma_0(d), when d is the discriminant of the maximal order O. Hecke Operators for Maass Waveforms on PSL(2,Z) with Integer Weight and Eta Multiplier

We construct Hecke operators acting on Maass waveforms of integer non-zero weight and transforming according to a non-trivial multiplier system on the modular group. Using these Hecke operators we obtain multiplicativity relations for the Fourier coefficients of such Maass waveforms. These relations generalize the usual weight zero relations. We also obtain an unexpected relation between coefficients with positive and negative indices with a constant of proportionality involving the Laplace eigenvalue. Numerical examples of multiplicativity relations are given at the end of the paper.

On a relation between certain $q$-hypergeometric series and Maass waveforms

In this paper, we answer a question of Li, Ngo, and Rhoades concerning a set of $q$-series related to the $q$-hypergeometric series $σ$ from Ramanajun's lost notebook. Our results parallel a theorem of Cohen which says that $σ$, along with its partner function $σ^*$, interpolate the coefficients of a Maass waveform of eigenvalue $1/4$.

On some special families of $q$-hypergeometric Maass forms

Using special polynomials introduced by Hikami and the second author in their study of torus knots, we construct classes of $q$-hypergeometric series lying in the Habiro ring. These give rise to new families of quantum modular forms, and their Fourier coefficients encode distinguished Maass cusp forms. The Katz-Sarnak Density Conjecture states that the behavior of zeros of a family of $L$-functions near the central point (as the conductors tend to zero) agrees with the behavior of eigenvalues near 1 of a classical compact group (as the matrix size tends to infinity).
