Let $q$ be a prime power and $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q$ elements. Let $e$ and $d$ be positive integers. In this paper, for $d\geq2$ and $q\equiv1(\mathrm{mod}~ed(d-1))$, we calculate the number of points on an algebraic curve $E_{e,d}:y^e=x^d+ax+b$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ in terms of $_dF_{d-1}$ Gaussian hypergeometric series with multiplicative characters of orders $d$ and $e(d-1)$, and in terms of $_{d-1}F_{d-2}$ Gaussian hypergeometric series with multiplicative characters of orders $ed(d-1)$ and $e(d-1)$. This helps us to express the trace of Frobenius endomorphism of an algebraic curve $E_{e,d}$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ in terms of the above hypergeometric series. As applications, we obtain some transformations and special values of $_2F_{1}$ Gaussian hypergeometric series.
We prove finite field analogues of integral representations of Appell- Lauricella hypergeometric functions in many variables. We consider certain hypersurfaces having a group action and compute the numbers of rational points associated with characters of the group, which will be expressed in terms of Appell-Lauricella functions over finite fields.
We give an expression for the trace of Frobenius for the family of curves \[ y^3 = x (x-1)(x-λ)(x-μ) \] over finite fields in terms of finite field hypergeometric functions.
Inspired by a result of Manin, we study the relationship between certain period integrals and the trace of Frobenius of genus 3 generalized Legendre curves. We show that both of these properties can be computed in terms of "matching" classical and finite field hypergeometric functions, a phenomenon that has also been observed in elliptic curves and many higher dimensional varieties.
We consider certain CM elliptic curves which are related to Fermat curves, and express the values of $L$-functions at $s=2$ in terms of special values of generalized hypergeometric functions. We compare them and a similar result of Rogers-Zudilin with Otsubo's regulator formulas, and give a new proof of the Beilinson conjectures originally due to Bloch.
In this paper, we investigate the relationships among hypergeometric series, truncated hypergeometric series, and Gaussian hypergeometric functions through some families of `hypergeometric' algebraic varieties that are higher dimensional analogues of Legendre curves.
In this paper we construct certain higher Chow cycles in the $K_{1}$ of the Jacobian of Fermat curves, generalising a construction of Collino. We further compute the regulator of these elements in terms of special values of hypergeometric functions. Otsubo has computed the regulator of certain elements of $K_0$ and $K_2$ of Fermat varieties and this paper is along the same lines.
Hypergeometric functions over F_p and relations to elliptic curves and modular forms

Let $X_0^6(1)/W_6$ be the Atkin-Lehner quotient of the Shimura curve $X_0^6(1)$ associated to a maximal order in an indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $6$ over $\mathbb Q$. By realizing modular forms on $X_0^6(1)/W_6$ in two ways, one in terms of hypergeometric functions and the other in terms of Borcherds forms, and using Schofer's formula for values of Borcherds forms at CM-points, we obtain special values of certain hypergeometric functions in terms of periods of elliptic curves over $\overline\mathbb Q$ with complex multiplication.
Building on the developments of many people including Evans, Greene, Katz, McCarthy, Ono, Roberts, and Rodriguez-Villegas, we consider period functions for hypergeometric type algebraic varieties over finite fields and consequently study hypergeometric functions over finite fields in a manner that is parallel to that of the classical hypergeometric functions. Using a comparison between the classical gamma function and its finite field analogue the Gauss sum, we give a systematic way to obtain certain types of hypergeometric transformation and evaluation formulas over finite fields and interpre…
We consider algebraic transformations of hypergeometric functions from a geometric point of view. Hypergeometric functions are shown to arise from the deRham realization of a hypergeometric motive. The $\ell$-adic realization of the motive gives rise to hypergeometric characters sums over finite fields. This helps to unify and explain some recent results about transformations of hypergeometric character sums.
We study the character sums \[ϕ_{(m,n)}(a,b)=\sum_{x\in\mathbb{F}_q}ϕ\left(x(x^{m}+a)(x^{n}+b)\right),\textrm{ and, } ψ_{(m,n)}(a,b)=\sum_{x\in\mathbb{F}_q}ϕ\left((x^{m}+a)(x^{n}+b)\right)\] where $ϕ$ is the quadratic character defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$. These sums are expressed in terms of Gaussian hypergeometric series over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Then we use these expressions to exhibit the number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points on families of hyperelliptic curves and their Jacobian varieties.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve described by either an Edwards model or a twisted Edwards model over $\mathbb{F}_p$, namely, $E$ is defined by one of the following equations $x^2+y^2=a^2(1+x^2y^2),\, a^5-a\not\equiv 0$ mod $p$, or, $ax^2+y^2=1+dx^2y^2,\,ad(a-d)\not\equiv0$ mod $p$, respectively. We express the number of rational points of $E$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$ using the Gaussian hypergeometric series $\displaystyle {_2F_1}\left(\begin{matrix} ϕ&ϕ {} & ε \end{matrix}\Big| x\right)$ where $ε$ and $ϕ$ are the trivial and quadratic characters over $\mathbb{F}_p$ respectively. This enables us to eva…
Let $X$ be the family of hypersurfaces in the odd-dimensional torus ${\mathbb T}^{2n+1}$ defined by a Laurent polynomial $f$ with fixed exponents and variable coefficients. We show that if $nΔ$, the dilation of the Newton polytope $Δ$ of $f$ by the factor $n$, contains no interior lattice points, then the Picard-Fuchs equation of $W_{2n}H^{2n}_{\rm DR}(X)$ has a full set of algebraic solutions (where $W_\bullet$ denotes the weight filtration on de Rham cohomology). We also describe a procedure for finding solutions of these Picard-Fuchs equations.
A Huff curve over a field $K$ is an elliptic curve defined by the equation $ax(y^2-1)=by(x^2-1)$ where $a,b\in K$ are such that $a^2\ne b^2$. In a similar fashion, a general Huff curve over $K$ is described by the equation $x(ay^2-1)=y(bx^2-1)$ where $a,b\in K$ are such that $ab(a-b)\ne 0$. In this note we express the number of rational points on these curves over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic in terms of Gaussian hypergeometric series $\displaystyle {_2F_1}(λ):={_2F_1}\left(\begin{matrix} ϕ&ϕ& ε\end{matrix}\Big| λ\right)$ where $ϕ$ and $ε$ are the quadratic and trivial c…
We prove hypergeometric type summation identities for a function defined in terms of quotients of the $p$-adic gamma function by counting points on certain families of hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. We also find certain special values of that function.
We define a finite-field version of Appell-Lauricella hypergeometric functions built from period functions in several variables, paralleling the development by Fuselier, et. al in the single variable case. We develop geometric connections between these functions and the family of generalized Picard curves. In our main result, we use finite-field Appell-Lauricella functions to establish a finite-field analogue of Koike and Shiga's cubic transformation for the Appell hypergeometric function $F_1$, proving a conjecture of Ling Long. We use our multivariable period functions to construct formulas …
In 1995, Thakur invented and studied positive characteristic analogues of hypergeometric functions. In this paper, we interpret the special values of those functions as periods of a pre-$t$-motive. As a consequence, we show their transcendence and linear independence results by using Chang's refined version of the Anderson-Brownawell-Papanikolas criterion. Furthermore, as by-products, we show some linear/algebraic independence results among the special values of Kochubei multiple polylogarithms according to our period interpretation and the corresponding refined criterion.
We consider natural polynomial truncations of hypergeometric power series defined over finite fields. For these truncations, we establish asymptotic upper bounds of order $O(p^{11/12})$ on the number of roots in the prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$. We discuss the correspondence to families of elliptic curves and K3 surfaces of certain such hypergeometric polynomials, for which sharp bounds are obtained in some cases. We include some computations to illustrate and supplement our results.
A certain "condition (S)" on reductive algebraic groups was introduced in [GT2], in which a slightly stronger condition (S+) was shown to have very strong consequences. We show that a wide class of Kloosterman and hypergeometric sheaves satisfy (S+). For this class of sheaves, we determine possible structure of their monodromy groups.
The Ross symbol is defined to be an element {1-z,1-w\} in K_2 of a Fermat curve z^n+w^m=1. Ross showed that it is non-torsion by computing the Beilinson regulator. In this paper, we introduce a generalization of the Ross symbols in K_{d+1} of a variety (1-x_0^{n_0})\cdots(1-x_d^{n_d})=t. The main result is that the Beilinson regulator is described by the hypergeometric functions {}_{d+3}F_{d+2}'s.
We prove that the diagonal of any finite product of algebraic functions of the form \begin{align*} {(1-x_1-\dots-x_n)^R}, \qquad R\in\mathbb{Q}, \end{align*} is a generalized hypergeometric function, and we provide an explicit description of its parameters. The particular case $(1-x-y)^R/(1-x-y-z)$ corresponds to the main identity of Abdelaziz, Koutschan and Maillard in [AKM2020, §3.2]. Our result is useful in both directions: on the one hand it shows that Christol's conjecture holds true for a large class of hypergeometric functions, on the other hand it allows for a very explicit and general…
