Sketch of proof of a theorem relating the two subjects of the title. It can be thought as an extension of results of Landau for the classical hypergeometric function. It relies on the characterization of algebraic hypergeometric functions of Beukers and Heckman. In the process we also show that a variant of a classical construction of Bezout (producing a quadratic form, the Bezoutian, out of two polynomials in one variable) gives the Hermitian form fixed by the monodromy group, up to scaling.
We use the Dwork-Frobenius operator to prove an integrality result for $A$-hypergeometric series whose coefficients are factorial ratios. As a special case, we generalize one direction of a classical result of Landau on the integrality of factorial ratios.
We give a complete classification of a certain family of step functions related to the Nyman--Beurling approach to the Riemann hypothesis and previously studied by V. I. Vasyunin. Equivalently, we completely describe when certain sequences of ratios of factorial products are always integral. Essentially, once certain observations are made, this comes down to an application of Beukers and Heckman's classification of the monodromy of the hypergeometric function nF_{n-1}. We also note applications to the classification of cyclic quotient singularities.
This note is an extended version of the slides for my talk with the same title at the {\it Arithmetic, geometry, and modular forms: a conference in honour of Bill Duke} in June 2019 at the ETH in Z"urich. The results presented concern three geometric criteria for the integrality of factorial ratios, numbers such as (30n)!n!/(6n)!(10n)!(15n)!, which are integral in a non-immediate way for all n. This work is an offshoot of an ongoing project on hypergeometric motives joint with D. Roberts and M. Watkins.
This paper describes a new approach to classifying integral factorial ratio, obtaining in particular a direct proof of a result of Bober. These results generalize an observation going back to Chebyshev that $(30n)!n!/((15n)!(10n)!(6n)!)$ is an integer for all $n$. Due to the work of Rodriguez-Villegas and Beukers and Heckman, this problem is closely related to classifying hypergeometric functions with finite monodromy groups, and the result of Bober was originally derived as a consequence of the work of Beukers--Heckman. The new proof is elementary and makes partial progress on other related q…
Landau has characterized the integrality of certain ratios of factorials. Delaygue has characterized the integrality of the Taylor coefficients of certain mirror maps constructed from series involving those ratios. Using the $A$-hypergeometric point of view, we express those characterizations in terms of the nonexistence of interior points in multiples of the associated lattice polytope.
We prove finite field analogues of integral representations of Appell- Lauricella hypergeometric functions in many variables. We consider certain hypersurfaces having a group action and compute the numbers of rational points associated with characters of the group, which will be expressed in terms of Appell-Lauricella functions over finite fields.
We study the arithmetic property which allows to sharpen number-theoretic estimates. Previous results on this property are, as a rule, quantitive. The application of our general qualitive theorems to generalized hypergeometric functions extends the set of irrational numbers which are the values of these functions.
Let $q$ be a prime power and $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q$ elements. Let $e$ and $d$ be positive integers. In this paper, for $d\geq2$ and $q\equiv1(\mathrm{mod}~ed(d-1))$, we calculate the number of points on an algebraic curve $E_{e,d}:y^e=x^d+ax+b$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ in terms of $_dF_{d-1}$ Gaussian hypergeometric series with multiplicative characters of orders $d$ and $e(d-1)$, and in terms of $_{d-1}F_{d-2}$ Gaussian hypergeometric series with multiplicative characters of orders $ed(d-1)$ and $e(d-1)$. This helps us to express the trace of Frobenius endomorphis…
Let $λ\in \mathbb{Q}\setminus \{0, 1\}$ and $l \geq 2$, and denote by $C_{l,λ}$ the nonsingular projective algebraic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with affine equation given by $$y^l=x(x-1)(x-λ).$$ In this paper we define $Ω(C_{l, λ})$ analogous to the real periods of elliptic curves and find a relation with ordinary hypergeometric series. We also give a relation between the number of points on $C_{l, λ}$ over a finite field and Gaussian hypergeometric series. Finally we give an alternate proof of a result of \cite{rouse}.
We study a linear form in the values of Euler's series $F(t)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty n!t^n$ at algebraic integer points $α_1, \ldots, α_m \in \mathbb{Z}_{\mathbb{K}}$ belonging to a number field $\mathbb{K}$. Let $v|p$ be a non-Archimedean valuation of $\mathbb{K}$. Two types of non-vanishing results for the linear form $Λ_v = λ_0 + λ_1 F_v(α_1) + \ldots + λ_m F_v(α_m)$, $λ_i \in \mathbb{Z}_{\mathbb{K}}$, are derived, the second of them containing a lower bound for the $v$-adic absolute value of $Λ_v$. The first non-vanishing result is also extended to the case of primes in residue classes. On the w…
Let $λ\in \mathbb{Q}\setminus \{0, -1\}$ and $l \geq 2$. Denote by $C_{l,λ}$ the nonsingular projective algebraic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with affine equation given by $$y^l=(x-1)(x^2+λ).$$ In this paper we give a relation between the number of points on $C_{l, λ}$ over a finite field and Gaussian hypergeometric series. We also give an alternate proof of a result of McCarthy (2010). We find some special values of ${_{3}}F_2$ and ${_{2}}F_1$ Gaussian hypergeometric series. Finally we evaluate the value of ${_{3}}F_2(4)$ which extends a result of Ono (1998).
In this paper, we investigate the relationships among hypergeometric series, truncated hypergeometric series, and Gaussian hypergeometric functions through some families of `hypergeometric' algebraic varieties that are higher dimensional analogues of Legendre curves.
We describe the structure of all codimension-two lattice configurations $A$ which admit a stable rational $A$-hypergeometric function, that is a rational function $F$ all whose partial derivatives are non zero, and which is a solution of the $A$-hypergeometric system of partial differential equations defined by Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. We show, moreover, that all stable rational $A$-hypergeometric functions may be described by toric residues and apply our results to study the rationality of bivariate series whose coefficients are quotients of factorials of linear forms.
In this paper, we will obtain new algebraic transformations of the $_2F_1$-hypergeometric functions. The main novelty in our approach is the interpretation of identities among $_2F_1$-hypergeometric functions as identities among automorphic forms on different Shimura curves.
Building on the developments of many people including Evans, Greene, Katz, McCarthy, Ono, Roberts, and Rodriguez-Villegas, we consider period functions for hypergeometric type algebraic varieties over finite fields and consequently study hypergeometric functions over finite fields in a manner that is parallel to that of the classical hypergeometric functions. Using a comparison between the classical gamma function and its finite field analogue the Gauss sum, we give a systematic way to obtain certain types of hypergeometric transformation and evaluation formulas over finite fields and interpre…
We consider algebraic transformations of hypergeometric functions from a geometric point of view. Hypergeometric functions are shown to arise from the deRham realization of a hypergeometric motive. The $\ell$-adic realization of the motive gives rise to hypergeometric characters sums over finite fields. This helps to unify and explain some recent results about transformations of hypergeometric character sums.
In this work we present an explicit relation between the number of points on a family of algebraic curves over $\F_{q}$ and sums of values of certain hypergeometric functions over $\F_{q}$. Moreover, we show that these hypergeometric functions can be explicitly related to the roots of the zeta function of the curve over $\F_{q}$ in some particular cases. A general conjecture relating these last two is presented and advances toward its proof are shown in the last section.
We use the Graph Minor Theorem to characterize infinite sequences of finite subsets of factorial and commutative semigroups (here semigroups have a unity element), e.g. the multiplicative semigroup of a unique factorization domain.
It is shown that Ramanujan's cubic transformation of the Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1$ arises from a relation between modular curves, namely the covering of $X_0(3)$ by $X_0(9)$. In general, when $2\le N\le 7$ the N-fold cover of $X_0(N)$ by $X_0(N^2)$ gives rise to an algebraic hypergeometric transformation. The N=2,3,4 transformations are arithmetic-geometric mean iterations, but the N=5,6,7 transformations are new. In the final two the change of variables is not parametrized by rational functions, since $X_0(6),X_0(7)$ are of genus 1. Since their quotients $X_0^+(6),X_0^+(7)$ unde…
Let $X$ be the family of hypersurfaces in the odd-dimensional torus ${\mathbb T}^{2n+1}$ defined by a Laurent polynomial $f$ with fixed exponents and variable coefficients. We show that if $nΔ$, the dilation of the Newton polytope $Δ$ of $f$ by the factor $n$, contains no interior lattice points, then the Picard-Fuchs equation of $W_{2n}H^{2n}_{\rm DR}(X)$ has a full set of algebraic solutions (where $W_\bullet$ denotes the weight filtration on de Rham cohomology). We also describe a procedure for finding solutions of these Picard-Fuchs equations.
In 1995, Thakur invented and studied positive characteristic analogues of hypergeometric functions. In this paper, we interpret the special values of those functions as periods of a pre-$t$-motive. As a consequence, we show their transcendence and linear independence results by using Chang's refined version of the Anderson-Brownawell-Papanikolas criterion. Furthermore, as by-products, we show some linear/algebraic independence results among the special values of Kochubei multiple polylogarithms according to our period interpretation and the corresponding refined criterion.
In connection with each global field of positive characteristic we exhibit many examples of two-variable algebraic functions possessing properties consistent with a conjectural refinement of the Stark conjecture in the function field case recently proposed by the author (math.NT/0407535). Most notably, all examples are Coleman units. We obtain our results by studying rank one shtukas in which both zero and pole are generic, i.~e., shtukas not associated to any Drinfeld module.
Let p be an odd prime. In 1984, Greene introduced the notion of hypergeometric functions over finite fields. Special values of these functions have been of interest as they are related to the number of F_p points on algebraic varieties and to Fourier coefficients of modular forms. In this paper, we explicitly determine these functions modulo higher powers of p and discuss an application to supercongruences. This application uses two non-trivial generalized Harmonic sum identities discovered using the computer summation package Sigma. We illustrate the usage of Sigma in the discovery and proof …
A certain "condition (S)" on reductive algebraic groups was introduced in [GT2], in which a slightly stronger condition (S+) was shown to have very strong consequences. We show that a wide class of Kloosterman and hypergeometric sheaves satisfy (S+). For this class of sheaves, we determine possible structure of their monodromy groups.
We prove that the diagonal of any finite product of algebraic functions of the form \begin{align*} {(1-x_1-\dots-x_n)^R}, \qquad R\in\mathbb{Q}, \end{align*} is a generalized hypergeometric function, and we provide an explicit description of its parameters. The particular case $(1-x-y)^R/(1-x-y-z)$ corresponds to the main identity of Abdelaziz, Koutschan and Maillard in [AKM2020, §3.2]. Our result is useful in both directions: on the one hand it shows that Christol's conjecture holds true for a large class of hypergeometric functions, on the other hand it allows for a very explicit and general…
In this paper, we establish improved effective irrationality measures for certain numbers of the form $\sqrt[3]{n}$, using approximations obtained from hypergeometric functions. These results are very close to the best possible using this method. We are able to obtain these results by determining very precise arithmetic information about the denominators of the coefficients of these hypergeometric functions. Improved bounds for $θ(k,l;x)$ and $ψ(k,l;x)$ for $k=1,3,4,6$ are also presented.
For certain class of hypergeometric functions ${}_3F_2$ with rational parameters, we give a sufficient condition for the special value at $1$ to be expressed in terms of logarithms of algebraic numbers. We give two proofs, both of which are algebro-geometric and related to higher regulators.
We study the form of possible algebraic relations between functions satisfying linear differential equations. In particular , if f and g satisfy linear differential equations and are algebraically dependent, we give conditions on the differential Galois group associated to f guaranteeing that g is a polynomial in f. We apply this to hypergeometric functions and iterated integrals.
