In this letter we derive a new method for direct calculation of the modal contributions to thermal conductivity, which is termed Green-Kubo modal analysis (GKMA). The GKMA method combines the lattice dynamics formalism with the Green-Kubo formula for thermal conductivity, such that the thermal conductivity becomes a direct summation of modal contributions, where one need not define the phonon velocity. As a result the GKMA method can be applied to any material/group of atoms where the atoms vibrate around stable equilibrium positions, which includes not only crystalline line compounds, but also random alloys, amorphous materials and even molecules. The GKMA method provides new insight into the nature of phonon transport, as it casts the problem in terms of mode-mode correlation instead of scattering, and provides a general unified formalism that can be used to understand phonon-phonon interactions in essentially any class of materials or structures where the atoms vibrate around stable equilibrium sites.
NbO2 is a potential material for nanometric memristor devices, both in the amorphous and the crystalline form. We fabricated NbO2 thin films using RF-magnetron sputtering from a stoichiometric target. The as-deposited films were amorphous regardless of the sputtering parameters. Post deposition vacuum annealing of the films was necessary to achieve crystallinity. A high degree of crystallinity was obtained by optimizing annealing duration and temperature. The resistivity of the material increases as it undergoes a structural transition from amorphous to crystalline with the crystalline films b…
The thermal properties of amorphous and crystalline phases in chalcogenide phase change materials (PCM) play a key role in device performance for non-volatile random-access memory. Here, we report the nanothermal morphology of amorphous and crystalline phases in laser pulsed GeTe and Ge2Sb2Te5 thin films by scanning thermal microscopy (SThM). By performing SThM measurements and applying quantitative physical models to two film thicknesses, the PCM thermal conductivities and thermal boundary conductances between the PCM and SThM probe are independently estimated for the amorphous and crystallin…
We propose that the driving force of an ultrafast crystalline-to-amorphous transition in phase-change memory alloys are strained bonds existing in the (metastable) crystalline phase. For the prototypical example of GST, we demonstrate that upon breaking of long Ge-Te bond by photoexcitation Ge ion shot from an octahedral crystalline to a tetrahedral amorphous position by the uncompensated force of strained short bonds. Subsequent lattice relaxation stabilizes the tetrahedral surroundings of the Ge atoms and ensures the long-term stability of the optically induced phase.
A model describing the asymmetric giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) in field-annealed amorphous ribbons is proposed. It is assumed that the ribbon consists of an inner amorphous core and surface hard magnetic crystalline layers. The model is based on a simultaneous solution of linearizied Maxwell equations and Landau-Lifshitz equation. The coupling between the surface layers and the amorphous core is described in terms of an effective bias field. Analytical expressions for the frequency and field dependences of the ribbon impedance are found. The calculated dependences are in a qualitative agreemen…
Amorphous/crystalline multilayer structures of Fe-P alloys were deposited electrochemically using the single bath technique. Hall-Petch behavior of microhardness with respect to sublayer thickness was observed down to a sublayer thickness of 15 nm. For thinner sublayers, a hardness plateau was obtained. The transition at a sublayer thickness of 15 nm coincides with the loss of the multilayer structure as observed in transmission electron microscopy. The transition is a possible result of a change in the amorphous to crystalline sublayer thickness ratio and the interface roughness development d…
Given the unique optical properties of LiF, it is often used as an observation window in high-temperature and pressure experiments; and, hence, estimates of its transmission properties are necessary to interpret observations. Since direct measurements of the thermal conductivity of LiF at the appropriate conditions are difficult, we resort to molecular simulation methods. Using the Belonoshko et al. (2000) empirical potential validated against ab initio phonon density of states, we estimate the thermal conductivity of LiF at high temperatures (1000-4000K) and pressures (100-400 GPa) with the G…
This study provides a new insight into the processes which occur when thin film hydrogenated amorphous silicon is subjected to UV laser irradiation in the presence of oxygen. It achieves this by observing the effects of subjecting the films to progressively increasing laser radiation doses. This reveals that an array of nuclei is first created, leading to the formation of a well-defined crystalline network, consistent with the structure of silicon oxide. Further irradiation results in the formation of cone-like structures on the crystalline network, due to silicon-oxygen bond breakage and migr…
2D electron gases (2DEGs) formed at oxide interfaces provide a rich testbed for fundamental physics and device applications. While the discussion of the physical origins of this phenomenon continues, the recent discovery of oxide 2DEGs at non-epitaxial interfaces between amorphous and crystalline oxides provides useful insight onto this debate. Furthermore, using amorphous oxides offers a low-cost route towards realizing 2DEGs for device applications. In this work, the band offsets of a simple model system of amorphous-crystalline oxide interface are investigated. The model system consists of …
The mechanism determining the band alignment of the amorphous/crystalline Si heterostructures is addressed with direct atomistic simulations of the interface performed using a hierarchical combination of various computational schemes ranging from classical model-potential molecular dynamics to ab-initio methods. We found that in coordination defect-free samples the band alignment is almost vanishing and independent on interface details. In defect-rich samples, instead, the band alignment is sizeably different with respect to the defect-free case, but, remarkably, almost independent on the conc…
We examine the ultrafast optical response of the crystalline and amorphous phases of the phase change material Ge$_2$Sb$_2$Te$_5$ below the phase transformation threshold. Simultaneous measurement of the transmissivity and reflectivity of thin film samples yields the time-dependent evolution of the dielectric function for both phases. We then identify how lattice motion and electronic excitation manifest in the dielectric response. The dielectric response of both phases is large but markedly different. At 800 nm, the changes in amorphous GST are well described by the Drude response of the gene…
Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations of the eutectic NaK alloy are performed using the Second Moment Approximation (SMA) model potential across a wide range of temperatures at constant pressure. The alloy structure and thermodynamics are analyzed along with the atomic level structures using a variety of structure identification methods. Both enthalpy and density are followed along an annealing process that reveals a clear melting point around 250 K. At lower temperatures, two thermodynamic branches are identified as crystalline and amorphous solids.
In the search for phase change materials (PCM) that may rival traditional random access memory, a complete understanding of the amorphous to crystalline phase transition is required. For the well-known Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) and GeTe (GT) chalcogenides, which display nucleation and growth dominated crystallization kinetics, respectively, this work explores the nanomechanical morphology of amorphous and crystalline phases in 50 nm thin films. Subjecting these PCM specimens to a lateral thermal gradient spanning the crystallization temperature allows for a detailed morphological investigation. Surface …
We present a first principles supercell methodology for the calculation of exchange interactions of magnetic materials with arbitrary degrees of structural and chemical disorder in their high temperature paramagnetic state. It is based on a projection of the total magnetic energy of the system onto local pair clusters, allowing the interactions to vary independently as a response to their local environments. We demonstrate our method by deriving the distance dependent exchange interactions in vibrating crystalline CrN, a Ti$_{0.5}$Cr$_{0.5}$N solid solution as well as in amorphous CrN. Our met…
Magnesium nickel hydride films have earlier been suggested for several optoelectronic applications, but the optical properties and band gap have not been firmly established. In this work, the dielectric functions and the optical band gaps of thin films of Mg2NiH4 have been determined experimentally from optical modeling using spectroscopic ellipsometry and spectrophotometry in the photon energy range between 0.7 and 4.2 eV. Samples were prepared by reactive sputtering, resulting in a single-layer geometry that could easily be studied by ellipsometry. Crystalline samples were prepared by anneal…
Crystalline to amorphous phase transformation during initial lithiation in (100) silicon-wafers is studied in an electrochemical cell with lithium metal as the counter and reference electrode. It is demonstrated that severe stress jumps across the phase boundary lead to fracture and damage, which is an essential consideration in designing silicon based anodes for lithium ion batteries. During initial lithiation, a moving phase boundary advances into the wafer starting from the surface facing the lithium electrode, transforming crystalline silicon into amorphous LixSi. The resulting biaxial com…
Amorphous materials are integral part of todays technology, they commonly are performant and versatile in integration. Consequently, future applications increasingly aim to harvest the potential of the amorphous state. Establishing its structure-property relationship, however, is inherently challenging using diffraction-based techniques yet is extremely desirable for developing advanced functionalities. In this article, we introduce a set of transmission electron microscopy-based techniques to locally quantify the structure of a material. This unique approach allows to clearly identify the spa…
Crystalline nanoparticles of cadmium iodide where suspended in the amorphous matrix of antimony trisulphide. Both materials are layered structured and have large band-gaps however cadmium iodide exhibits polytypism, i.e. it exists in various different crystalline states. Different crystalline states are marked by wholely different dielectric constants which give rise to sharp surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peaks in the UV-visible. The manuscript details the variation in SPR's with heat-treatment of the films.

Pulsed Laser Deposition allows to obtain W and W-Ta alloy coatings with different nanostructures, monitored by X-ray diffraction. The correlation between such structures and the elastic properties is investigated for amorphous-like, ultra-nano- and nano-crystalline coatings obtained by tuning the gas pressure during deposition, annealing temperature and Ta concentration. The full elastic characterization is achieved by surface Brillouin spectroscopy, interpreted by isotropic and anisotropic film models. Amorphous like coatings are obtained with He pressures of tens of Pa. In comparison with bu…
We have used grazing-angle infrared spectroscopy to detect the Berreman effect (BE) in the quasi-two-dimensional electron system (q-2DES) which forms spontaneously at the interface between SrTiO$_{3}$ (STO) and a thin film of LaAlO$_3$ (LAO). From the BE, which allows one to study longitudinal optical excitations in ultrathin films like the q-2DES, we have extracted at different temperatures its thickness, the charge density and mobility of the carriers under crystalline LAO (sample A), and the charge density under amorphous LAO (sample B). This quantity turns out to be higher than in sample A…
Thermal transport properties bear a pivotal role in influencing the performance of phase change memory (PCM) devices, in which the PCM operation involves fast and reversible phase change between amorphous and crystalline phases. In this paper, we present a systematic experimental and theoretical study on the thermal conductivity of GeTe at high temperatures involving fast change from amorphous to crystalline phase upon heating. Modulated photothermal radiometry (MPTR) is used to experimentally determine thermal conductivity of GeTe at high temperatures in both amorphous and crystalline phases.…
The atomistic mechanisms during lithiation and delithiation of amorphous Si nanowires ($a$-SiNW) have been investigated over cycles by molecular dynamics simulations. First, the Modified Embedded Atom Method (MEAM) potential from Cui et al. [J. Power Sources. 2012, (207) 150] has been further optimized on static (Li$_x$Si alloy phases and point defect energies) and on dynamic properties (Li diffusion) to reproduce the lithiation of small crystalline Si nanowires calculated at the {\it ab initio} level. The lithiation of $a$-SiNW reveals a two-phase process of lithiation with a larger diffusion…
We report a detailed comparison on the role of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of dipolar molecules on the threshold voltage and charge carrier mobility of organic field-effect transistor (OFET) made of both amorphous and polycrystalline organic semiconductors. We show that the same relationship between the threshold voltage and the dipole-induced charges in the SAM holds when both types of devices are fabricated on strictly identical base substrates. Charge carrier mobilities, almost constant for amorphous OFET, are not affected by the dipole in the SAMs, while for polycrystalline OFET (pent…
Amorphous to crystalline phase transitions in phase change materials (PCM) can have strong influence on the actuation of microelectromechanical systems under the influence of Casimir forces. Indeed, the bifurcation curves of the stationary equilibrium points and the corresponding phase portraits of the actuation dynamics between gold and AIST PCM, where an increase of the Casimir force of up ~25% has been measured upon crystallization, show strong sensitivity to changes of the Casimir force as the stiffness of the actuating component decreases and/or the effective interaction area of the Casim…

The off-diagonal magnetoimpedance in field-annealed CoFeSiB amorphous ribbons was measured in the low-frequency range using a pick-up coil wound around the sample. The asymmetric two-peak behavior of the field dependence of the off-diagonal impedance was observed. The asymmetry is attributed to the formation of a hard magnetic crystalline phase at the ribbon surface. The experimental results are interpreted in terms of the surface impedance tensor. It is assumed that the ribbon consists of an inner amorphous region and surface crystalline layers. The coupling between the crystalline and amorph…
The band offsets between crystalline and hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) are key parameters governing the charge transport in modern silicon hetrojunction solar cells. They are an important input for macroscopic simulators that are used to further optimize the solar cell. Past experimental studies, using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and capacitance-voltage measurements, have yielded conflicting results on the band offset. Here we present a computational study on the band offsets. It is based on atomistic models and density-functional theory (DFT). The amorphous part of the in…

The crystalline garnet Mn3Fe2Si3O12 and an amorphous phase of the same nominal composition are synthesized at high pressure. The magnetic properties of the two forms are reported. Both phases order antiferromagnetically. The crystalline phase exhibits a Curie-Weiss theta of -47.2 K, with a sharp ordering transition at 12 K. The glassy phase exhibits a larger antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss theta, of -83.0 K, with a broad ordering transition observed at 2.5 K. Both phases can be classified as magnetically frustrated, although the amorphous phase shows a much higher degree of frustration. The amor…
Drawing inspiration from nature, where some organisms can control the short range order of amorphous minerals, we successfully manipulated the short range order of amorphous alumina by surface and size effects. By utilizing the Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) method to grow amorphous nanometrically thin films, combined with state-of-the-art electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), we showed experimentally that the short range order in such films is strongly influenced by size. This phenomenon is equivalent to the well-known size effect on lattice param…
We present the investigations on atomic dynamics and Li+ diffusion in crystalline and amorphous Li2Si2O5 using quasielastic (QENS) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies supplemented by ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD). The QENS measurements in the amorphous phase of Li2Si2O5 show a narrow temperature window (700 < T < 775 K), exhibiting significant quasielastic broadening corresponding to the fast Li+ diffusion and relaxation of SiO4 units to the crystalline phase. Our INS measurements clearly show the presence of large phonon density of states (PDOS) at low energy (low…
We studied the anharmonic modal contributions to heat transfer at the interface of crystalline Si and amorphous SiO2 using the recently proposed interface conductance modal analysis (ICMA) method. Our results show that ~74% of the thermal interface conductance (TIC) arises from the extended modes, which occupy more than ~58% of the entire population of vibrational modes in the system. More interestingly, although the population of purely localized and interfacial modes on the SiO2 side is less than 6 times the population of partially extended modes, the contribution to TIC by these localized m…
We explored the magnetic behavior of a common two-phase nanomagnetic system by Monte Carlo computer simulation of a modified Heisenberg model on a 3D complex lattice with single- and cluster-spins. The effect of exchange coupling between two component magnetic phases was studied on the enhancement in Curie temperature (ECT) of the intergranular amorphous region of a common duplex-phase alloy system, with numerous nano-crystallites embedded in amorphous matrix. The dependences of ECT were investigated systematically upon the nanocrystallite size, the volume fraction and the interspace among cry…
We show that a deep-learning neural network potential (DP) based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations can well describe Cu-Zr materials, an example of a binary alloy system that can coexist in several ordered intermetallics and as an amorphous phase. The complex phase diagram for Cu-Zr makes it a challenging system for traditional atomistic force-fields that fail to describe well the different properties and phases. Instead, we show that a DP approach using a large database with ~300k configurations can render results generally on par with DFT. The training set includes configuratio…
Germanium dioxide ($GeO_2$) is a chemical analogue of $SiO_2$. Furthermore, it is also to some extent a structural analogue, as the low and high-pressure short-range order (tetrahedral and octahedral) is the same. However, a number of differences exist. For example, the $GeO_2$ phase diagram exhibits a smaller number of polymorphs, and all three $GeO_2$ phases (crystalline, glass, liquid) have an increased sensitivity to pressure, undergoing pressure induced changes at much lower pressures than their equivalent $SiO_2$ analogues. In addition, differences exist in $GeO_2$ glass in the medium ra…
Solid-state precipitation can be used to tailor materials properties, ranging from ferromagnets and catalysts to mechanical strengthening and energy storage. Thermoelectric properties can be modified by precipitation to enhance phonon scattering while retaining charge-carrier transmission. Here, we uncover unconventional dual Janus-type nanoprecipitates in Mg3Sb1.5Bi0.5 formed by side-by-side Bi- and Ge-rich appendages, in contrast to separate nanoprecipitate formation. These Janus nanoprecipitates result from local co-melting of Bi and Ge during sintering, enabling an amorphous-like lattice t…
High entropy materials (HEMs) are of great interest for their mechanical, chemical and electronic properties. In this paper we analyse (TaNbHfTiZr)C, a carbide type of HEM, both in crystalline and amorphous phases, using density functional theory (DFT). We find that the relaxed lattice volume of the amorphous phase is larger, while its bulk modulus is lower, than that of its crystalline counterpart. Both phases are metallic with all the transition metals contributing similarly to the density of states (DOS) close to the Fermi level, with Ti and Nb giving the proportionally largest contribution…
We present an ab initio calculation of the DC conductivity of amorphous silicon and hydrogenated amorphous silicon. The Kubo-Greenwood formula is used to obtain the DC conductivity, by thermal averaging over extended dynamical simulation. Its application to disordered solids is discussed. The conductivity is computed for a wide range of temperatures and doping is explored in a naive way by shifting the Fermi level. We observed the Meyer-Neldel rule for the electrical conductivity with E_MNR = 0.06 eV and a temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR ~ -2.0% K^-1 for a-Si:H. In general, experime…
Modeling the Dielectric Relaxation in Semicrystalline Polymers -- Understanding the Role of the Interphase between the Amorphous and Crystalline Domains
First-principles based modeling on phonon dynamics and transport using density functional theory and Boltzmann transport equation has proven powerful in predicting thermal conductivity of crystalline materials, but it remains unfeasible for modeling complex crystals and disordered solids due to the prohibitive computational cost to capture the disordered structure, especially when the quasiparticle "phonon" model breaks down. Recently, machine-learning regression algorithms show great promises for building high-accuracy potential fields for atomistic modeling with length and time scales far be…
Engineering the structure of core-shell colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles (CSNPs) is attractive due to the potential to enhance photo-induced charge transfer (PICT) and induce favourable optical and electronic properties. Nonetheless, the sensitivity of telluride CSNPs to high temperatures makes it challenging to precisely modulate their surface crystallinity. Herein, we have developed an efficient strategy for synthesising telluride CSNPs with thin amorphous shells using aqueous cation exchange (ACE). By changing the synthesis temperature in the range 40 to 110C, the crystallinity of the …
To assess the potential of amorphous Si (a-Si) as an anode for Li, Na, and Mg-ion batteries, the energetics of Li, Na, and Mg atoms in a-Si are computed from first-principles and compared to those in crystalline Si (c-Si). It is shown that Si preamorphization increases the average anode voltage and reduces the volume expansion of the anode during the insertion of the metal atoms. Analysis of computed formation energies of Li, Na, and Mg defects in a-Si and c-Si suggests that the energetics of the single atoms into a-Si are thermodynamically more favorable. For instance, defect formation energi…
It has been observed that the effect of magnetic impurities in a superconductor is drastically different depending on whether the host superconductor is in a crystalline or an amorphous state. Based on the recent theory of Kim and Overhauser, it is shown that as the system is getting disordered, the initial slope of the $T_{c}$ depression is decreasing by a factor $\sqrt{\ell/ξ_{0}}$, when the mean free path $\ell$ becomes smaller than the BCS coherence length $ξ_{0}$, which is in agreement with experimental findings. In addition, for a superconductor in a pure crystalline state the supercondu…
Precise determination of the solid-state microstructure of semiconducting polymers is of paramount importance for the further development of these materials in various organic electronic technologies. Yet, prior characterization of the ordering of semiconducting polymers often resulted in conundrums in which X-ray scattering and microscopy yielded seemingly contradicting results. Here, based on fast scanning calorimetry, we introduce for the first time the concept of the semi-para-crystallinity and measurement of the degree of para-crystallinity (ordered volume/mass fraction) in a set of mater…
Experiments and atomic-scale simulations suggest that the transmission of plasticity carriers in deforming amorphous-crystalline nanolaminates is mediated by the biphase interface between the amorphous and crystalline layers. In this paper, we present a micromechanics model for these biphase nanolaminates that describes defect interactions through the amorphous-crystalline interface (ACI). The model is based on an effective-temperature framework to achieve a unified description of the slow, configurational atomic rearrangements in both phases when driven out of equilibrium. We show how the sec…
The PEO3:LiCF3SO3 polymer electrolyte has attracted significant research due to its enhanced stability at the lithium/polymer interface of high conductivity polymer batteries. Experimental studies have shown that, depending on the preparation conditions, both the PEO3:LiCF3SO3 crystalline complex and the PEO3:LiCF3SO3 amorphous phase can be formed. However, previous theoretical investigations focused on the short chain amorphous PEO3:LiCF3SO3 system. We report ab initio density-functional-theory calculations of crystalline PEO3:LiCF3SO3. The calculated results about the bonding configuration, …
A phenomenological model for the asymmetric giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) in field-annealed amorphous ribbons is developed. The effect of a surface crystalline layer on the GMI response is described in terms of an effective bias field appearing due to a coupling between the crystalline layer and amorphous phase. It is shown that the presence of the bias field changes drastically the GMI profile. At low frequencies, the domain-walls motion leads to a steplike change in the GMI response. At high frequencies, the domain-walls motion is damped, and the GMI profile exhibits asymmetric two-peak behav…
