We propose that the driving force of an ultrafast crystalline-to-amorphous transition in phase-change memory alloys are strained bonds existing in the (metastable) crystalline phase. For the prototypical example of GST, we demonstrate that upon breaking of long Ge-Te bond by photoexcitation Ge ion shot from an octahedral crystalline to a tetrahedral amorphous position by the uncompensated force of strained short bonds. Subsequent lattice relaxation stabilizes the tetrahedral surroundings of the Ge atoms and ensures the long-term stability of the optically induced phase.
We discuss how structural disorder and amorphization affects solid-state diffusion, and consider zirconolite as a currently important case study. By performing extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we disentangle the effects of amorphization and density, and show that a profound increase of solid-state diffusion takes place as a result of amorphization. Importantly, this can take place at the same density as in the crystal, representing an interesting general insight regarding solid-state diffusion. We find that decreasing the density in the amorphous system increases pre-factors of diffus…
Solid-state amorphization of crystalline copper nanolayers embedded in a Cu64Zr36 metallic glass is studied by molecular dynamics simulations for different orientations of the crystalline layer. We show that solid-state amorphization is driven by a reduction of interface energy, which compensates the bulk excess energy of the amorphous nanolayer with respect to the crystalline phase up to a critical layer thickness. A simple thermodynamic model is derived, which describes the simulation results in terms of orientation-dependent interface energies. Detailed analysis reveals the structure of the…
We report calculations indicating that amorphous RAO$_3$ oxides, with R and A trivalent cations, have approximately the same static dielectric constant as their perovskite crystal phase. The effect is due to the disorder-activated polar response of non-polar crystal modes at low frequency, which compensates a moderate but appreciable reduction of the ionic dynamical charges. The dielectric response was studied via density-functional perturbation theory. Amorphous samples were generated by molecular dynamics melt-and-quench simulations.
We report results of ab initio constant-pressure molecular dynamics simulations of sulfur compression leading to structural transition and pressure-induced amorphization. Starting from the orthorhombic S-I phase composed of S$_8$ ring molecules we find at room temperature and pressure of 20 GPa a transformation to monoclinic phase where half of the molecules develop a different conformation. Upon further compression, the monoclinic phase undergoes pressure-induced amorphization into an amorphous phase, in agreement with experiments. We study the dynamics of the amorphization transition and inv…
We investigate the low temperature structural and electronic properties of the type-I clathrate Eu8Ga16Ge30 under pressure using x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques. The XRD measurements reveal a transition to an amorphous phase above 18 GPa. Unlike previous reports on other clathrate compounds, no volume-collapse is observed prior to the crystalline-amorphous phase transition which takes place when the unit cell volume is reduced to 81% of its ambient pressure value. Fits of the pressure-dependent…
Thin films of iron and permalloy Ni80Fe20 were prepared using an Ar+N2 mixture with magnetron sputtering technique at ambient temperature. The nitrogen partial pressure, during sputtering process was varied in the range of 0 to 100%, keeping the total gas flow at constant. At lower nitrogen pressures RN2<33% both Fe and NiFe, first form a nanocrystalline structure and an increase in nitrogen partail pressure results in formation of an amorphous structure. At intermediate nitrogen partial pressures, nitrides of Fe and NiFe were obtained while at even higher nitrogen partial pressures, nitrides …
As a typical immiscible binary system, copper (Cu) and lithium (Li) show no alloying and chemical intermixing under normal circumstances. A notable example that takes advantages of the immiscibility between Cu and Li is the widespread utilization of Cu foils as the anodic current collector in Li-ion batteries. Here we show that the nanoscale size effect can play a subtle yet critical role in mediating the chemical activity of Cu and therefore its miscibility with Li, such that the electrochemical alloying and solid-state amorphization will occur in such an immiscible system when decreasing Cu …
We study numerically an atomistic model which is shown to exhibit a one--step crystal--to--amorphous transition upon decompression. The amorphous phase cannot be distinguished from the one obtained by quenching from the melt. For a perfectly crystalline starting sample, the transition occurs at a pressure at which a shear phonon mode destabilizes, and triggers a cascade process leading to the amorphous state. When defects are present, the nucleation barrier is greatly reduced and the transformation occurs very close to the extrapolation of the melting line to low temperatures. In this last cas…
The intermetallic compound Zr3Al is severely deformed by the method of repeated cold rolling. By X-ray diffraction it is shown that this leads to amorphization. TEM investigations reveal that a homogeneously distributed debris of very small nanocrystals is present in the amorphous matrix that is not resolved by X-ray diffraction. After heating to 773 K, the crystallization of the amorphous structure leads to a fully nanocrystalline structure of small grains (10 - 20 nm in diameter) of the non-equilibrium Zr2Al phase. It is concluded that the debris retained in the amorphous phase acts as nucle…
We have studied the amorphization process of SnI4 up to 26.8GPa with unprecedented experimental details by combining Sn and I K edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. Standards and reverse Monte Carlo extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) refinements confirm that the SnI4 tetrahedron is a fundamental structural unit that is preserved through the crystalline phase-I to crystalline phase-II transition about 7 to 10GPa and then in the amorphous phase that appears above 20GPa. Up to now unexploited Iodine EXAFS reveals to be extremely informative and confirms t…
There is an increasing interest in the amorphous states of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous coordination polymers, which can be produced by pressure-induced amorphization, temperature-induced amorphization, melt-quenching, ball-milling, irradiation, etc. They can exhibit useful physical and chemical properties, distinct from those achievable in the crystalline states, along with greater ease of processing, and intrinsic advantages over crystals and powders, such as high transparency and mechanical robustness. However, these amorphous states are particularly challenging to characteriz…
Understanding the response of ceramics operating in extreme environments is of interest for a variety of applications. Ab initio molecular dynamic simulations have been used to investigate the effect of structure and $B$-site (=Ti, Zr) cation composition of lanthanum-based oxides (La$_2$$B_2$O$_7$) on electronic-excitation-induced amorphization. We find that the amorphous transition in monoclinic layered perovskite La$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ occurs for a lower degree of electronic excitation than for cubic pyrochlore La$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. While in each case the formation of O$_2$-like molecules drives the…
The structural phase transitions of single crystal TiO2-B nanoribbons were investigated in-situ at high-pressure using the synchrotron X-ray diffraction and the Raman scattering. Our results have shown a pressure-induced amorphization (PIA) occurred in TiO2-B nanoribbons upon compression, resulting in a high density amorphous (HDA) form related to the baddeleyite structure. Upon decompression, the HDA form transforms to a low density amorphous (LDA) form while the samples still maintain their pristine nanoribbon shape. HRTEM imaging reveals that the LDA phase has an α-PbO2 structure with short…
The structural nature of high-density amorphous ice (HDA), which forms through low-temperature pressure-induced amorphization of the 'ordinary' ice I, is heavily debated. Clarifying this question is not only important for understanding the complex condensed states of H$_2$O but also in the wider context of pressure-induced amorphization processes, which are encountered across the entire materials spectrum. We first show that ammonium fluoride (NH$_4$F), which has a similar hydrogen-bonded network to ice I, also undergoes a pressure collapse upon compression at 77 K. However, the product materi…
Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, we investigate the mechanical response of silicon to high dose ion-irradiation. We employ a realistic and efficient model to directly simulate ion beam induced amorphization. Structural properties of the amorphized sample are compared with experimental data and results of other simulation studies. We find the behavior of the irradiated material is related to the rate at which it can relax. Depending upon the ability to deform, we observe either the generation of a high compressive stress and subsequent expansion of the material, or generation of tensil…
Our investigations on porous Si show that on increase of pressure it undergoes crystalline phase transitions instead of pressure induced amorphization - claimed earlier, and the amorphous phase appears only on release of pressure. This amorphous phase, when subjected to higher pressures, transforms reversibly to a higher coordinated primitive hexagonal phase showing a kind of memory effect which may be the only example of its kind in the elemental solids. First principles calculations and thermodynamic arguments help understand these observations.
We observe that pressure-induced amorphization of Ga2SeTe2 (a III-VI semiconductor) is directly influenced by the periodicity of its intrinsic defect structures. Specimens with periodic and semi-periodic two-dimensional vacancy structures become amorphous around 10-11 GPa in contrast to those with aperiodic structures, which amorphize around 7-8 GPa. The result is a notable instance of altering material phase-change properties via rearrangement of stoichiometric vacancies as opposed to adjusting their concentrations. Based on our experimental findings, we posit that periodic two-dimensional va…
Fast and reversible phase transitions in chalcogenide phase-change materials (PCMs), in particular, Ge-Sb-Te compounds, are not only of fundamental interests, but also make PCMs based random access memory (PRAM) a leading candidate for non-volatile memory and neuromorphic computing devices. To RESET the memory cell, crystalline Ge-Sb-Te has to undergo phase transitions firstly to a liquid state and then to an amorphous state, corresponding to an abrupt change in electrical resistance. In this work, we demonstrate a progressive amorphization process in GeSb2Te4 thin films under electron beam ir…
The development of epitaxy techniques for localized growth of crystalline silicon nanofilms and nanostructures has been crucial to recent advances in electronics and photonics. A precise definition of the crystal growth location, however, requires elaborate pre-epitaxy processes for substrate patterning. Our molecular dynamics simulations reveal that homoepitaxial silicon nanofilms can be directly deposited by a crystalline silicon tip rubbing against the substrate, thus enabling geometrically controlled crystal growth with no need for substrate pre-patterning. We name this solid-phase epitaxi…
We study the pressure-induced structural transformation of Ge$_{136}$ clathrate by ab initio molecular dynamics and metadynamics. The system under pressure first undergoes amorphization followed by an ultrafast recrystallization to the $β$-tin structure on the time scale of 30 ps. The initial pressure-induced amorphization of clathrate is triggered by high pressure while the subsequent fast recrystallization to $β$-tin is driven by low temperature. Interestingly, the amorphous intermediate is still diffusive even at room temperature, in spite of very strong undercooling, making the ultrafast r…
We study a model of interacting particles in two dimensions to address the relation between crystal-crystal transformations and pressure-induced amorphization. On increasing pressure at very low temperature, our model undergoes a martensitic crystal-crystal transformation. The characteristics of the resulting polycrystalline structure depend on defect density, compression rate, and nucleation and growth barriers. We find two different limiting cases. In one of them the martensite crystals, once nucleated, grow easily perpendicularly to the invariant interface, and the final structure contains …

Understanding various macroscopic pressure-volume-temperature properties of materials on the atomistic level has always been an ambition for physicists and material scientists. Particularly, some materials such as zirconium tungstate (ZrW2O8), exhibit multiple exotic properties including negative thermal expansion (NTE) and pressure-induced amorphization (PIA). Here, using machine-learning based deep potential, we trace both of the phenomena in ZrW2O8 back to a common atomistic origin, where the nonbridging O atoms play a critical role. We demonstrate that the nonbridging O atoms confer great …
Degradation of mechanical properties of zirconia polycrystals is hardly discussed in terms of solution-precipitation grain-boundary sliding due to experimental controversies over imaging of intergranular amorphous phases at high and room temperatures. Here, the authors applied the techniques of mechanical spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to shed light on the amorphization of grain interfaces at high temperature where the interface-reaction determines the behaviour of fine-grained zirconia polycrystals. They present mechanical spectroscopy results, which yield evidences o…
We show that ZIF-4, a metal-organic framework (MOF) with a zeolitic structure, undergoes a crystal--amorphous transition on heating to 300 $^\circ$C. The amorphous form, which we term a-ZIF, is recoverable to ambient conditions or may be converted to a dense crystalline phase of the same composition by heating to 400 $^\circ$C. Neutron and X-ray total scattering data collected during the amorphization process are used as a basis for reverse Monte Carlo refinement of an atomistic model of the structure of a-ZIF. We show that the structure is best understood in terms of a continuous random netwo…
Optical phonons in nanoparticles with the randomness of interatomic bonds are considered both analytically and numerically. For weak dilute disorder two qualitatively different regimes of separated and overlapped levels are observed, resembling the case of random atomic masses investigated previously. At stronger and/or more dense disorder, the particles become essentially inhomogeneous, thus constituting the minimal model to describe an amorphous phase, where the picture of vibrational modes becomes more subtle. We concentrate here on the experimentally relevant case of strong disorder locate…
Laser-Synthesized Amorphous PdSe$_{\mathrm{2-x}}$ Nanoparticles: A Defect-Rich Platform for High-Efficiency SERS, Photocatalysis, and Photothermal Conversion
Phase-change materials serve a broad field of applications ranging from non-volatile electronic memory to optical data storage by providing reversible, repeatable, and rapid switching between amorphous and crystalline states accompanied by large changes in the electrical and optical properties. Here, we demonstrate how ion irradiation can be used to tailor disorder in initially crystalline Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) thin films via the intentional creation of lattice defects. We found that continuous Ar ion irradiation at room temperature of GST films causes complete amorphization of GST when exceeding 0.…
Polymeric nitrogen with single bonds can be created from the molecular form at high pressure and due to large energy difference between triple and single bonds it is interesting as energetic material. Its structure and properties are, however, still not well understood. We studied amorphous nitrogen by \textit{ab initio} simulations, employing molecular dynamics and evolutionary algorithms. Amorphous nitrogen was prepared at pressure of 120 GPa by quenching from hot liquid, by pressure-induced amorphization of molecular crystal and by evolutionary search. All three amorphous forms were found t…

We consider the question of the amorphization of metallic alloys by melt quenching, as predicted by molecular dynamics simulations with semi-empirical potentials. The parametrization of the potentials is discussed on the example of the ternary Cu-Ti-Zr transition metals alloy, using as reference the ab-initio simulation. The pair structure in the amorphous state is computed from a potential of the Stillinger Weber form. The transferability of the parameters during the quench is investigated using two parametrizations: from solid state data, as usual, and from a new parametrization on the liqui…
We present thermodynamic crystallization and melting models and calculate phase change velocities in $Ge_2 Sb_2 Te_5$ based on kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. The calculated phase change velocities are strong functions of grain size, with smaller grains beginning to melt at lower temperatures. Phase change velocities are continuous functions of temperature which determine crystallization and melting rates. Hence, set and reset times as well as power and peak current requirements for switching are strong functions of grain size. Grain boundary amorphization can lead to a sufficient increa…
We studied the microstructural and helium bubbling evolutions of Gd2Zr2O7 waste form with immobilized TRPO (50 wt%) under multi-energy He ion irradiation. Three structurally heterogeneous regions for the Gd2Zr2O7 waste form were found as a function of the depth from the He-irradiated surface. Specifically, at a depth less than 40 nm below the He-irradiated surface (Region I) the Gd2Zr2O7 waste form is completely amorphous with large spherical He bubbles (5-25 nm). In the intermediate region, Region II, (40-800 nm) partially amorphized Gd2Zr2O7 waste form accompanied with ribbon-like He bubbles…
In spite of remarkable developments in the field of advanced materials, silicon remains one of the foremost semiconductors of the day. Of enduring relevance to science and technology is silicon's nanomechanical behaviour including phase transformation, amorphization and dislocations generation, particularly in the context of molecular dynamics and materials research. So far, comprehensive modelling of the whole cycle of events in silicon during nanoscale deformation has not been possible, however, due to the limitations inherent in the existing interatomic potentials. This paper examines how w…
Oxygen is widely used to tune the performance of chalcogenide phase-change materials in the usage of phase-Change random access memory (PCRAM) which is considered as the most promising next-generation non-volatile memory. However, the microscopic role of oxygen in the write-erase process, i.e., the reversible phase transition between crystalline and amorphous state of phase-change materials is not clear yet. Using oxygen doped GeTe as an example, this work unravels the role of oxygen at the atomic scale by means of ab initio total energy calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulation…
Monophasic and homogeneous Ni10Zr7 nanocrystalline alloy films were successfully grown at room temperature by co-sputtering in an indigenously developed three-gun DC/RF magnetron sputtering unit. The films could be produced with long-range crystallographic and chemical order in the alloy, thus overcoming the widely acknowledged inherent proclivity of the glass forming Ni-Zr couple towards amorphization. Crystallinity of these alloys is a desirable feature with regard to improved efficacy in applications such as hydrogen storage, catalytic activity and nuclear reactor engineering, to name a few…
