We have studied the amorphization process of SnI4 up to 26.8GPa with unprecedented experimental details by combining Sn and I K edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. Standards and reverse Monte Carlo extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) refinements confirm that the SnI4 tetrahedron is a fundamental structural unit that is preserved through the crystalline phase-I to crystalline phase-II transition about 7 to 10GPa and then in the amorphous phase that appears above 20GPa. Up to now unexploited Iodine EXAFS reveals to be extremely informative and confirms the formation of iodine iodine short bonds close to 2.85Å in the amorphous phase at 26.8 GPa. A coordination number increase of Sn in the crystalline phase-II appears to be excluded, while the deformation of the tetrahedral units proceeds through a flattening that keeps the average I-Sn-I angle close to 109.5°. Moreover, we put in evidence the impact of pressure on the Sn near edge structure under competing geometrical and electronic effects.
We report the results of Raman spectroscopy high-pressure studies of alkali metal fluoroargentates (M2AgF4, where M=Na, K, Rb) associated with theoretical and x-ray diffraction studies for the K member of the series. Theoretical density functional calculations predict two structural phase transitions for K2AgF4: one from low pressure monoclinic P21/c (beta) phase to intermediate-pressure tetragonal I4!2d structure at 6 GPa, and another to high-pressure triclinic P1! phase at 58 GPa. However, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction data indicate that both polymorphic forms of K2AgF4 as well as…
The intermetallic compound Zr3Al is severely deformed by the method of repeated cold rolling. By X-ray diffraction it is shown that this leads to amorphization. TEM investigations reveal that a homogeneously distributed debris of very small nanocrystals is present in the amorphous matrix that is not resolved by X-ray diffraction. After heating to 773 K, the crystallization of the amorphous structure leads to a fully nanocrystalline structure of small grains (10 - 20 nm in diameter) of the non-equilibrium Zr2Al phase. It is concluded that the debris retained in the amorphous phase acts as nucle…
Thin films of iron and permalloy Ni80Fe20 were prepared using an Ar+N2 mixture with magnetron sputtering technique at ambient temperature. The nitrogen partial pressure, during sputtering process was varied in the range of 0 to 100%, keeping the total gas flow at constant. At lower nitrogen pressures RN2<33% both Fe and NiFe, first form a nanocrystalline structure and an increase in nitrogen partail pressure results in formation of an amorphous structure. At intermediate nitrogen partial pressures, nitrides of Fe and NiFe were obtained while at even higher nitrogen partial pressures, nitrides …
Recent advances of highly efficient solar cells based on organic-inorganic halide perovskites have triggered intense research efforts to establish the fundamental properties of these materials. In this work, we utilized diamond anvil cell to investigate the pressure-induced structural and electronic transformations in methylammonium lead iodide (CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$) up to 7 GPa at room temperature. The synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment show that the sample transformed from tetragonal to orthorhombic phase at 0.3 GPa and amorphized above 4 GPa. Further high pressure IR spectroscopy exper…
We investigate the low temperature structural and electronic properties of the type-I clathrate Eu8Ga16Ge30 under pressure using x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques. The XRD measurements reveal a transition to an amorphous phase above 18 GPa. Unlike previous reports on other clathrate compounds, no volume-collapse is observed prior to the crystalline-amorphous phase transition which takes place when the unit cell volume is reduced to 81% of its ambient pressure value. Fits of the pressure-dependent…
There is considerable controversy about swift heavy ion (SHI) irradiation induced displacive phase transitions in thermally insulating oxides. We present here unambiguous evidence for tetragonal to monoclinic and rhombohedral to monoclinic phase transitions in BaTiO3 under swift heavy ion irradiation (120MeV 108Ag+9 ions) using in-situ x-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) studies. The anomalous splitting/broadening of 111/222pc, 200pc and 220pc pseudocubic peaks for fluences greater than 3*1012 ions/cm2 reveal structural changes before amorphization at higher fluences. Lebail analysis of XRPD profi…
The structural phase transitions of single crystal TiO2-B nanoribbons were investigated in-situ at high-pressure using the synchrotron X-ray diffraction and the Raman scattering. Our results have shown a pressure-induced amorphization (PIA) occurred in TiO2-B nanoribbons upon compression, resulting in a high density amorphous (HDA) form related to the baddeleyite structure. Upon decompression, the HDA form transforms to a low density amorphous (LDA) form while the samples still maintain their pristine nanoribbon shape. HRTEM imaging reveals that the LDA phase has an α-PbO2 structure with short…
There is an increasing interest in the amorphous states of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous coordination polymers, which can be produced by pressure-induced amorphization, temperature-induced amorphization, melt-quenching, ball-milling, irradiation, etc. They can exhibit useful physical and chemical properties, distinct from those achievable in the crystalline states, along with greater ease of processing, and intrinsic advantages over crystals and powders, such as high transparency and mechanical robustness. However, these amorphous states are particularly challenging to characteriz…
This work reports the incompatibility of the Stokes relation for time reversibility of wave's propagation and the usage of complex atomic form-factor in diffraction theories. The implications behind a diffraction theory that obeys the Stokes relation is discussed.
The structural properties of Thallium (III) oxide (Tl2O3) have been studied both experimentally and theoretically under compression at room temperature. X-ray powder diffraction measurements up to 37.7 GPa have been complemented with ab initio total-energy calculations. The equation of state of Tl2O3 has been determined and compared to related compounds. It has been found experimentally that Tl2O3 remains in its initial cubic bixbyite-type structure up to 22.0 GPa. At this pressure, the onset of amorphization is observed, being the sample fully amorphous at 25.2 GPa. The sample retains the amo…
The high energy density of electronic excitations due to the impact of swift heavy ions can induce structural modifications in materials. We present a X-ray diffractometer called ALIX, which has been set up at the low-energy IRRSUD beamline of the GANIL facility, to allow the study of structural modification kinetics as a function of the ion fluence. The X-ray setup has been modified and optimized to enable irradiation by swift heavy ions simultaneously to X-ray pattern recording. We present the capability of ALIX to perform simultaneous irradiation - diffraction by using energy discrimination…
The current practice of angular (Lorentz, Polarization and absorption (LPA)) corrections in bulk materials for higher angle broad peaks, due to the Kα doublet, are based on the results of Pike (Acta Cryst., 12 (1959) 87-92) and Ladell (Acta Cryst. 14 (1961) 47-53). These results are extended to thin film x-ray diffraction. The current practice in thin film studies of using the absorption factors for monochromatic radiation in LPA corrections is incorrect in both symmetric and grazing incidence x-ray diffraction. The correct expressions for absorption corrections are developed. In addition, a n…
Synchrotron radiation x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy techniques, complemented by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy methods and density functional theory calculations are employed to investigate the effect of Mn in Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$N:Mn samples with an Al content up to 100%. The atomic and electronic structure of Mn is established together with its local environment and valence state. A dilute alloy without precipitation is obtained for Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$N:Mn with Al concentrations up to 82%, and the surfactant role of Mn in the epitaxial process is confirmed.
The dispersive part of the refractive index of vanadium is determined by measuring the angular displacement of the first order diffraction peak of a V/Fe superlattice. The measurements were made using elliptically polarized synchrotron radiation which was scanned through the V L2,3 absorption edges for different incident scattering angles. The x-ray scattering technique provides access to direct determination of the dispersive part of the refractive index through an absorption resonance. The influence of absorption at the resonances is shown by comparing the absorption correction to the disper…

By following the trajectories of quantum particles inside a periodic lattice and preserving their classical probabilities for reflection, transmission and absorption at each lattice plane, classical scattering outcomes are obtained. Diffraction phenomena in crystals are reproducible after assigning probability amplitudes to every classical outcome. When applied to X-ray diffraction in reflection geometry, this procedure has provided simple recursive equations to calculated the X-ray reflectivity of crystals with thickness varying since a few atomic layers to infinity. The results are in agreem…
Iron oxide nano particles with nominal Fe2O3 stoichiometry were synthesized by a wet, soft chemical method with the heat treatment temperatures from 250°C to 900°C in air. The variation in the structural properties of the nano particles with the heat treatment temperature was studied by X-ray diffraction and Fe K shell X-ray absorption study. X-ray diffractograms show that at lower annealing temperatures nano particle comprises both maghemite and hematite phases. With increasing temperature, the remainder of the maghemite phase transformed completely to hematite. Profile analysis of the leadin…
Representative compounds of the new family of magnetic materials Gd5-xNdxSi4 were analyzed by X-ray diffraction at the XRD1 beamline at LNLS. To reduce X-ray absorption, thin layers of the powder samples were mounted outside the capillaries and measured in Debye-Scherrer geometry as usual. The X-ray diffraction analyses and the magnetometry results indicate that the behavior of the magnetic transition temperature as a function of Nd content may be directly related to the average of the four smallest interatomic distances between different rare earth sites of the majority phase of each compound…
Results of in situ high pressure x-ray powder diffraction on the mixed valence compound Cs2Au(I)Au(III)I6 (CsAuI3) are reported, for pressures up to 21 GPa in a diamond anvil cell under hydrostatic conditions. We find a reversible pressure-induced tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition at 5.5-6 GPa, and reversible amorphization at 12-14 GPa. Two alternative structures are proposed for the high-pressure orthorhombic phase, and are discussed in the context of a possible Au valence transition.
Effect of Niobium Doping on the Crystal Structure and Hydrogen Sorption Properties of TiFe: Combined Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Study
Femtosecond carrier recombination in PbI2 is measured using tabletop high-harmonic extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption spectroscopy and ultrafast electron diffraction. XUV absorption from 45 eV to 62 eV measures transitions from the iodine 4d core level to the conduction band density of states. Photoexcitation at 400 nm creates separate and distinct transient absorption signals for holes and electrons, separated in energy by the 2.4 eV band gap of the semiconductor. The shape of the conduction band and therefore the XUV absorption spectrum is temperature dependent, and nonradiative …
Two aspects of the ambient pressure magnetic structure of heavy fermion material CeRhIn$_5$ have remained under some debate since its discovery: whether the structure is indeed an incommensurate helix or a spin density wave, and what is the precise magnitude of the ordered magnetic moment. By using a single crystal sample optimized for hot neutrons to minimize neutron absorption by Rh and In, here we report an ordered moment of $m=0.54(2)~μ_B$. In addition, by using spherical neutron polarimetry measurements on a similar single crystal sample, we have confirmed the helical nature of the magnet…
Unique intensity features arising from dynamical diffraction arise in coherent x-ray nanobeam diffraction patterns of crystals having thicknesses larger than the x-ray extinction depth or exhibiting combinations of nanoscale and mesoscale features. We demonstrate that dynamical scattering effects can be accurately predicted using an optical model combined with the Darwin theory of dynamical x-ray diffraction. The model includes the highly divergent coherent x-ray nanobeams produced by Fresnel zone plate focusing optics and accounts for primary extinction, multiple scattering, and absorption. T…
A novel aluminium rich alloy for hydrogen storage has been discovered, ScAl0.8Mg0.2, which has superior properties regarding hydrogen storage capacity, kinetics and stability towards air oxidation in comparison to hydrogen absorption in state-of-the-art intermetallic compounds. Detailed analysis of the hydrogen absorption in ScAl0.8Mg0.2 has been performed using in situ synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and quantum mechanical calculations. The results from calculations and experiments are in good agreement with each other.
The properties of polycrystalline wurtzite Zn_{1-x}Mg_{x}O (0 <= x <= 0.15) have been studied, by powder X-ray diffraction, including an analysis of the X-ray line-broadening, and by luminescence, absorption, and Raman spectroscopies. We have previously established from synchrotron X-ray difffraction that with increasing Mg-concentration, the c-axis compresses, and the off-center cation displacement within each tetrahedral (Zn,Mg)O_{4} unit decreases. Here we perform a size-strain line-broadening analysis of the XRD peaks, which reveals that the Mg-substitution reduces the coherent crystallite…
An in-situ neutron diffraction investigation of the annealing and healing of dislocations in the bulk Pd-D2 system was carried out. Lattice misfit between the alpha and beta hydride phases produces dislocations during the phase transition in either direction, relieving elastic strain, which is reflected in reduced pressure hysteresis compared to the spinodal hysteresis. The effects on the dislocation density of annealing the metal under vacuum, of annealing in the beta hydride phase, and of the phase transformation itself were investigated by measuring diffraction peak breadths during annealin…
Resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) is a spectroscopy where both the power of site selective diffraction and the power of local absorption spectroscopy regarding atomic species are combined. By virtue of the dependence on the core level state energy and the three dimensional electronic structure of the intermediate state, this technique is specially suited to study charge, orbital or spin orderings and associated crystal distortions. In the case of charge ordering, we exploit the fact that atoms with closely related site symmetries but with small charge differences exhibit resonances at slightly d…
Structural changes of Li2C2 under pressure were studied by synchrotron x-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell under hydrostatic conditions and by using evolutionary search methodology for crystal structure prediction. We show that the high-pressure polymorph of Li2C2, which forms from the Immm ground-state structure (Z = 2) at around 15 GPa, adopts an orthorhombic Pnma structure with Z = 4. Acetylide C2 dumbbells characteristic of Immm Li2C2 are retained in Pnma Li2C2. The structure of Pnma Li2C2 relates closely to the anticotunnite-type structure. C2 dumbbell units are coordinated by nine …
The quasi-one-dimensional material PdTeI exhibits unusual electronic transport properties at ambient pressure. Here, we systematically investigate both the structural and electronic responses of PdTeI to external pressure, through a combination of electrical transport, synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy measurements. The charge density wave (CDW) order in PdTeI is fragile and the transition temperature TCDW decreases rapidly with the application of external pressure. The resistivity hump is indiscernible when the pressure is increased to 1 GPa. Upon further compression…
Even though, the crystal structure of the intermediate (S') and the equilibrium S (Al2CuMg) phase were subject of many investigations by using mostly imaging or diffraction techniques, the results remain still controversial. In this study, we used X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAFS) to verify the correct structure considering the well-known models reported by Perlitz & Westgren (PW), Mondolfo, Radmilovic & Kilaas and Yan et al. The structure was confirmed by direct comparison to simulated XAFS spectra using the software tool FDMNES. Our results support the widely accepted PW model as the corr…
The structural, electronic and optical properties of cubic double perovskite BaCoWO6 have been studied. Neutron powder diffraction data is collected on this sample from 6K to 300K. The crystal structure is face centered cubic, space group being Fm3m (No. 225). We did not find evidence for long range magnetic ordering in this system in this temperature range. The band-gap is estimated using Uv-vis spectroscopy. The Co-K edge X-ray absorption (XAFS) spectra of Ba2CoWO6 was analysed together with those Co-foil, which was used as reference compounds. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray a…
The compression of arsenolite (cubic As2O3) has been studied from a joint experimental and theoretical point of view. Experimental X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements of this molecular solid at high pressures with different pressure-transmitting media have been interpreted with the help of ab initio calculations. Our results confirm arsenolite as one of the softest minerals in absence of hydrogen bonding and provide evidence for helium trapping above 3 GPa between adamantane-type As4O6 cages, thus leading to a new compound with stoichiometry He2As4O6. Helium trapping alters all…
Time-dependent and constituent-specific spectral changes in soft near edge X-ray spectroscopy (XAS) of an [Fe/MgO]$_8$ metal/insulator heterostructure upon laser excitation are analyzed at the O K-edge with picosecond time resolution. The oxygen absorption edge of the insulator features a uniform intensity decrease of the fine structure at elevated phononic temperatures, which can be quantified by a simple simulation and fitting procedure presented here. Combining X-ray absorption spectroscopy with ultrafast electron diffraction measurements and ab initio calculations demonstrate that the tran…
Ga2SeTe2 belongs to a family of materials with large intrinsic vacancy concentrations that are being actively studied due to their potential for diverse applications that include thermoelectrics and phase-change memory. In this article, the Ga2SeTe2 structure is investigated via synchrotron x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and x-ray absorption experiments. Diffraction and microscopy measurements showed that the extent of vacancy ordering in Ga2SeTe2 is highly dependent on thermal annealing. It is posited that stoichiometric vacancies play a role in local atomic distortions in Ga2SeTe2 (…
KH2PO4 (KDP) belongs to the class of hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics, whose paraelectric to ferroelectric phase transition is driven by the ordering of the protons in the hydrogen bonds. We demonstrate that forbidden reflections of KDP, when measured at an x-ray absorption edge, are highly sensitive to the asymmetry of proton configurations. The change of average symmetry caused by the "freezing" of the protons during the phase transition is clearly evidenced. In the paraelectric phase, we identify in the resonant spectra of the forbidden reflections a contribution related to the transient prot…
In this work we present an experimental study of structure and phase stability in ternary Cu-Sn-In alloys around 55 at.% Cu in the temperature range 100^{\circ}C < T < 550^{\circ}C. We have followed in real-time the sequence of phase transformations in succesive heating and cooling ramps, using state-of-the-art neutron powder thermodiffractometry. These experiments were complemented with calorimetric studies of the same alloys. Our results give experimental support to the current assessment of the ternary phase diagram in this composition and temperature range, yielding the sequence of transit…
The effect of substituting iron and zinc for cobalt in CaBaCo$_4$O$_7$ has been investigated using neutron diffraction and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The orthorhombic distortion present in the parent compound CaBaCo$_4$O$_7$ decreases with increasing the content of either Fe or Zn. The samples CaBaCo$_3$ZnO$_7$ and CaBaCo$_{4-x}$Fe$_x$O$_7$ with $x \leq 1.5$ are metrically hexagonal but much better refinements in the neutron diffraction patterns are obtained using an orthorhombic unit cell. The two types of substitution have opposite effects on the structural and magnetic properties. Fe at…
By means of circularly polarized x-ray beam at Dy L3 and Fe K absorption edges, the chiral structure of the electric quadrupole was investigated for a single crystal of DyFe3(BO3)4 in which both Dy and Fe ions are arranged in spiral manners. The integrated intensity of the resonant x- ray diffraction of space-group forbidden reflections 004 and 005 is interpreted within the electric dipole transitions from Dy 2p3 to 5d and Fe 1s to 4p, respectively. We have confirmed that the 2 handedness of the crystal observed at Dy L3 and Fe K edges is consistent with that observed at Dy M5 edge in the prev…
We present simulations of Bragg Coherent X-ray Diffractive Imaging (CXDI) data from finite crystals in the frame of the dynamical theory of x-ray diffraction. The developed approach is based on numerical solution of modified Takagi-Taupin equations and can be applied for modeling of a broad range of x-ray diffraction experiments with finite three-dimensional crystals of arbitrary shape also in the presence of strain. We performed simulations for nanocrystals of a cubic and hemispherical shape of different sizes and provided a detailed analysis of artifacts in the Bragg CXDI reconstructions int…
The incorporation of noble metal nanoparticles, displaying localized surface plasmon resonance, in the active area of donor-acceptor bulk-heterojunction organic photovoltaic devices is an industrially compatible light trapping strategy, able to guarantee better absorption of the incident photons and give an efficiency improvement between 12% and 38%. In the present work, we investigate the effect of Au and Ag nanoparticles blended with P3HT: PCBM on the P3HT crystallization dynamics by synchrotron grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. We conclude that the presence of (1) 80nm Au, (2) mix of 5nm…
A nanopatterning scheme is presented by which the structure height can be controlled in the tens of nanometers range and the lateral resolution is a factor at least three times better than the point spread function of the writing beam. The method relies on the initiation of the polymerization mediated by a very inefficient energy transfer from a fluorescent dye molecule after single photon absorption. The mechanism has the following distinctive steps: the dye adsorbs on the substrate surface with a higher concentration than in the bulk, upon illumination it triggers the polymerization, then is…
Using low energy electron diffraction (LEED), scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques, we have studied the first steps of silicon adsorption onto Cu (001) single crystal substrate. For low coverage (~ 0.5 ML) and after annealing at 100°C, STM images and LEED patterns reveal the formation of an ordered quasi commensurate superstructure. From a quantitative analysis of XAS data, we extract the Si-Cu distance and detail the local atomic arrangement of the structure.
High-grade MgB2(0001) films were grown on Mg(0001) by means of ultra-high-vacuum molecular beam epitaxy. Low energy electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction data indicate that thick films are formed by epitaxially oriented grains with MgB2 bulk structure. The quality of the films allowed angle-resolved photoemission and polarization dependent x-ray absorption measurements. For the first time, we report the band mapping along the Gamma-A direction and the estimation of the electron-phonon coupling constant l ~ 0.55 for the surface state electrons.
