The crystal structure of CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite has been investigated under high-pressure by synchrotron-based powder X-ray diffraction. We found that after the previously reported phase transitions in CH3NH3PbBr3 (Pm-3m->Im-3->Pmn21), which occur below 2 GPa, there is a third transition to a crystalline phase at 4.6 GPa. This transition is reported here for the first time contradicting previous studies which reported amorphization of CH3NH3PbBr3 between 2.3 and 4.6 GPa. Our X-ray diffraction measurements show that CH3NH3PbBr3 remains crystalline up to 7.6 GPa, the highest pressure covered by experiments. The new high-pressure phase is also described by the space group Pmn21, but the transition involves abrupt changes in the unit-cell parameters and a 3% decrease of the unit-cell volume. Our conclusions are confirmed by optical-absorption experiments and visual observations and by the fact that changes induced by pressure up to 10 GPa are reversible. The optical studies also allow for the determination of the pressure dependence of the band-gap energy which is discussed using the structural information obtained from X-ray diffraction.
We have observed short-lived optical birefringence in a CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$ single crystal induced by a powerful nearly single-cycle terahertz pulse. Apart from the instantaneous contribution that follows the profile of the squared pump electric field, the recorded anisotropy signal contains an exponential component decaying in $\sim$ 350 fs, underdamped oscillations at the frequency of $\sim$ 0.16 THz and an intermediate picosecond relaxation process with a Gaussian tail. We associate these three non-trivial features with, respectively, Kerr effect in the inorganic lattice, terahertz-induced…
In this paper we provide an accurate high-pressure structural and optical study of MAPbI3 hybrid perovskite. Structural data show the presence of a phase transition towards an orthorhombic structure around 0.3 GPa followed by full amorphization of the system above 3 GPa. After releasing pressure the systems keeps the high-pressure orthorhombic phase. The occurrence of these structural transitions is further confirmed by pressure induced variations of the photoluminescence signal at high pressure. These variations clearly indicate that the bandgap value and the electronic structure of MAPI chan…
We report measurements of the heat capacity and cross-plane thermal conductivity of 2D (CxH2x+1NH3)2[MAPbBr3]n-1PbBr4 (MA = methylammonium) lead bromide perovskites (2D LHPs) at room temperature as a function of both the octahedral layer thickness (n = 1,2,3) and the organic spacer chain length (x=4,5,6,7,8) using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and frequency domain thermoreflectance (FDTR) respectively. We observe ultralow thermal conductivities (0.18-0.51 W/m K) for all 2D LHPs studied, but surprisingly minimal suppression of thermal conductivity with respect to bulk MAPbBr3 (0.5 W/m…
Recent advances of highly efficient solar cells based on organic-inorganic halide perovskites have triggered intense research efforts to establish the fundamental properties of these materials. In this work, we utilized diamond anvil cell to investigate the pressure-induced structural and electronic transformations in methylammonium lead iodide (CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$) up to 7 GPa at room temperature. The synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment show that the sample transformed from tetragonal to orthorhombic phase at 0.3 GPa and amorphized above 4 GPa. Further high pressure IR spectroscopy exper…
Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites containing a mixture of iodide and bromide anions consistently perform better in donor-acceptor heterojunction solar cells than the standard methylammonium lead triiodide material. This observation is counterintuitive, as it is generally expected for photovoltaic materials that heterogeneities and compositional disorder cause reduced carrier diffusion length and conversion efficiency. Here, we combine ultrafast photoinduced electroabsorption and broadband fluorescence up-conversion spectroscopy measurements to scrutinize the carrier dynamics in mixed-c…
The wide band gap methylammonium lead bromide perovskite is promising for applications in tandem solar cells and light-emitting diodes. Despite its utility, there is only a limited understanding of its reproducibility and stability. Herein, the dependence of the properties, performance, and shelf storage of thin films and devices on minute changes to the precursor solution stoichiometry is examined in detail. Although photovoltaic cells based on these solution changes exhibit similar initial performance, the shelf-storage depends strongly on the precursor solution stoichiometry. While all devi…
Single crystals of the methylammonium (MA) lead halides MAPbI3, MAPbBr3, and MAPbCl3 have been investigated using infrared spectroscopy with the aim of analyzing structural and dynamical aspects of processes that enable the ordering of the MA molecule in the orthorhombic crystal structure of these hybrid perovskites. Our temperature-dependent studies were focused on the analysis of the CH/NH rocking, C-N stretching, and CH/NH bending modes of the MA molecule in the 800-1750 cm-1 frequency range. They deliver a direct comparison of the behavior of the three halides on crossing the orthorhombic-…
Owing to their exceptional semiconducting properties, hybrid inorganic-organic perovskites show great promise as photovoltaic absorbers. In these materials, long-range diffusion of charge carriers allows for most of the photogenerated carriers to contribute to the photovoltaic efficiency. Here, time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) microscopy is used to directly probe ambipolar carrier diffusion and recombination kinetics in hybrid perovskites. This technique is applied to thin films of methylammonium lead tri-iodide MAPbI$_3$ obtained with two different fabrication routes, methylammonium lead …
We show that adding ethylenediamine (EDA) to perovskite precursor solution improves the photovoltaic device performance and material stability of high-bromide-content, methylammonium-free, formamidinium cesium lead halide perovskites FA1-xCsxPb(I1-yBry)3 which are currently of interest for perovskite-on-Si tandem solar cells. Using spectroscopy and hyperspectral microscopy, we show that the additive improves film homogeneity and suppresses the phase instability that is ubiquitous in high-Br perovskite formulations, producing films that remain stable for over 100 days in ambient conditions. Wit…
Owing to the increasing popularity of lead-based hybrid perovskites for photovoltaic (PV) applications, it is crucial to understand their defect physics and its influence on their optoelectronic properties. In this work, we simulate various point defects in pseudo-cubic structures of mixed iodide-bromide and bromide-chloride methylammonium lead perovskites with the general formula MAPbI_{3-y}Br_{y} or MAPbBr_{3-y}Cl_{y} (where y is between 0 and 3), and use first principles based density functional theory computations to study their relative formation energies and charge transition levels. We …

Photo- and charge-carrier induced ion migration is a major challenge when utilizing metal halide perovskite semiconductors for optoelectronic applications. For mixed iodide/bromide perovskites, the compositional instability due to light- or electrical bias induced phase- segregation restricts the exploitation of the entire bandgap range. Previous experimental and theoretical work suggests that excited states or charge-carriers trigger the process but the exact mechanism is still under debate. To identify the mechanism and cause of light-induced phase-segregation phenomena we investigate the fu…
Methylammonium lead tribromide perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3, or MAPbBr3) as a photovoltaic material has attracted a great deal of recent interest. Factors that are important in their application in optoelectronic devices include their fractional contribution of the composition of the materials as well as their microscopic arrangement that is responsible for the formation of well-defined macroscopic structures. CH3NH3PbBr3 assumes different polymorphs (orthorhombic, tetragonal and cubic) depending on the evolution temperature of the bulk material. Density functional theory calculations have been per…
In this study, the optoelectronic properties of a monolithically integrated series-connected tandem solar cell are simulated. Following the large success of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, which have recently demonstrated large efficiencies with low production costs, we examine the possibility of using the same perovskites as absorbers in a tandem solar cell. The cell consists in a methylammonium mixed bromide-iodide lead perovskite, CH3NH3PbI3(1-x)Br3x (0 < x < 1), top sub-cell and a single-crystalline silicon bottom sub-cell. A Si-based tunnel junction connects the two sub-cells. Numer…
Organolead halide perovskites are a family of hybrid organic-inorganic compounds whose remarkable optoelectronic properties have been under intensive scrutiny in recent years. Here we use inelastic X-ray scattering to study low-energy lattice excitations in single crystals of methylammonium lead iodide and bromide perovskites. Our findings confirm the displacive nature of the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition, which is further shown, using neutron and x-ray diffraction, to be close to a tricritical point. Lastly, we detect quasistatic symmetry-breaking nanodomains persisting well into the h…
Much recent attention has been devoted towards unravelling the microscopic optoelectronic properties of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOP). Here we investigate by coherent inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy and Brillouin light scattering, low frequency acoustic phonons in four different hybrid perovskite single crystals: MAPbBr$_3$, FAPbBr$_3$, MAPbI$_3$ and $α$-FAPbI$_3$ (MA: methylammonium, FA: formamidinium). We report a complete set of elastic constants caracterized by a very soft shear modulus C$_{44}$. Further, a tendency towards an incipient ferroelastic transition is obs…
Electronic properties and lattice vibrations are supposed to be strongly correlated in metal-halide perovskites, due to the "soft" fluctuating nature of their crystal lattice. Thus, unveiling electron-phonon coupling dynamics upon ultra-fast photoexcitation is necessary for understanding the optoelectronic behaviour of the semiconductor. Here, we use impulsive vibrational spectroscopy to reveal ground and excited state vibrational modes of methylammonium lead-bromide perovskite. We observe a coherent phonon at 106 cm-1 (13 meV), pertaining to the inorganic octahedral, which is peculiar of the …
Outstanding optoelectronic properties and a facile synthesis render halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) a promising material for nanostructure-based devices. However, the commercialization is hindered mainly by the lack of NC stability under ambient conditions and inefficient charge carrier injection. Here, we investigate solutions to both problems, employing methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr_3) NCs encapsulated in diblock copolymer core-shell micelles of tunable size. We confirm that the shell does not prohibit energy transfer, as FRET efficiencies between these NCs and 2D CsPbBr_3 nanopla…

We present an \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics study of the temperature-induced phases of methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr$_3$). We confirm that the low-temperature phase is not ferroelectric, and rule out the existence of any overall polarization arising from the motion of the individual sub-lattices. Our simulations at room temperature resulted in a cubic \textit{Pm-3m} phase with no discernible local orthorhombic distortions. At low temperatures, such distortions are shown to originate from octahedral scissoring modes, but they vanish at room temperature. The predicted timescales of…
