A novel aluminium rich alloy for hydrogen storage has been discovered, ScAl0.8Mg0.2, which has superior properties regarding hydrogen storage capacity, kinetics and stability towards air oxidation in comparison to hydrogen absorption in state-of-the-art intermetallic compounds. Detailed analysis of the hydrogen absorption in ScAl0.8Mg0.2 has been performed using in situ synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and quantum mechanical calculations. The results from calculations and experiments are in good agreement with each other.
Hydrogen-based fuels demand high-density storage that can operate under ambient temperatures. Pd and its alloys are the most investigated metal hydrides for hydrogen fuel cell applications. This study presented an alternative Pd alloy for hydrogen storage that can store and release hydrogen at room temperature. The surface of the most studied Pd (110) was modified with Au and Rh so that the hydrogen adsorption energy was 0.49 eV and the release temperature was 365 K. Both values are quite near to the optimum values for the adsorption energy and release temperature of a hydrogen fuel cell in re…
In this present investigation, we discussed the synthesis, microstructure, and hydrogen storage behavior intermetallic Laves phase in a hexanal TiVZrMnCoFe high entropy alloy. In this HEA, three elements are hydride-forming elements and the other three are non-hydride-forming elements (Fe, Mn, Co). The thermodynamic parameter like enthalpy of mixing was calculated using Meidmas model. The possibility of developing high entropy Laves phase-based hydrogen storage materials was advocated.
Carbons are being widely investigated as hydrogen storage material owing to their light weight, fast hydrogen adsorption kinetics and cost effectiveness. However, these materials suffer from low hydrogen storage capacity, particularly at room temperature. The aim of the present study is to develop carbon-based material from natural bio-precursor which shows at least moderate hydrogen storage at room temperature. For this purpose, hydrogenation characteristics of carbon derived from solid endosperm of coconut is studied. Solid endosperm and its carbonized version have a native grown distributio…
The hydrogen sorption performance of V55Ti21Cr17Fe7 and V55Ti21Mn17Fe7 alloys and their ribbons were evaluated by pressure composition temperature tests. Their hydrogen absorption kinetic properties were studied through hydrogen absorption curves. The crystallographic structures and microstructure of these alloys and ribbons before hydrogen absorption and after hydrogen desorption PCT tests were identified by Xray diffraction and Scanning electron microscopy analysis, respectively. Hydrogen storage characteristics of such materials were investigated by volumetric method using Sieverts type app…
Despite high interest in compact and safe storage of hydrogen in the solid-state hydride form, the design of alloys that can reversibly and quickly store hydrogen at room temperature under pressures close to atmospheric pressure is a long-lasting challenge. In this study, first-principles calculations are combined with experiments to develop high-entropy alloys (HEAs) for room-temperature hydrogen storage. TixZr2-xCrMnFeNi (x = 0.4-1.6) alloys with the Laves phase structure and low hydrogen binding energies of -0.1 to -0.15 eV are designed and synthesized. The HEAs reversibly store hydrogen in…
In this chapter, the physisorption of hydrogen molecules in porous materials as possible hydrogen storage systems has been reviewed. Owing to the weak interaction between H2 molecules and the adsorbent, high storage capacities are typically reached only at cryogenic temperature. Different classes of porous materials possessing different structure and composition have been designed for hydrogen storage applications using computational methods and especially with the aid of DFT methods. The adsorption energies for hydrogen in different porous materials have been increases by the doping of light …
An ideal material for on-board hydrogen storage must release hydrogen at practical temperature and pressure and also regenerate efficiently under similarly gentle conditions. Therefore, thermodynamically, the hydride material must lie within a narrow range near the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation phase boundary. Materials involving only conventional bonding mechanisms are unlikely to meet these requirements. In contrast, materials containing certain frustrated bonding are designed to be on the verge of frustration-induced phase transition, and they may be better suited for hydrogen storage. Here…
A promising material for hydrogen storage at room temperature-Al doped graphene was proposed theoretically by using density functional theory calculation. Hydrogen storage capacity of 5.13 wt% was predicted at T = 300 K and P = 0.1 Gpa with adsorption energy Eb = -0.260 eV/H2. This is close to the target of 6 wt% and satisfies the requirement of immobilization hydrogen with Eb of -0.2 ~ -0.4 eV/H2 at ambient temperature and modest pressure for commercial applications specified by U.S. Department of Energy. It is believed that the doped Al varies the electronic structures of both C and H2. The …
The storage of hydrogen (H$_2$) is of economic and ecological relevance, because it could potentially replace petroleum-based fuels. However, H$_2$ storage at mild condition remains one of the bottlenecks for its widespread usage. In order to devise successful H$_2$ storage strategies, there is a need for a fundamental understanding of the weak and elusive hydrogen interactions at the quantum mechanical level. One of the most promising strategies for storage at mild pressure and temperature is physisorption. Porous materials are specially effective at physisorption, however the process at the …
We study the hydrogen storage properties of planar boron sheets and compare them to those of graphene. The binding of molecular hydrogen to the boron sheet (0.05 eV) is stronger than that to graphene. We find that dispersion of alkali metal (AM = Li, Na, and K) atoms onto the boron sheet markedly increases hydrogen binding energies and storage capacities. The unique structure of the boron sheet presents a template for creating a stable lattice of strongly bonded metal atoms with a large nearest neighbor distance. In contrast, AM atoms dispersed on graphene tend to cluster to form a bulk metal.…
We study polylithiated molecules as building blocks for hydrogen storage materials, using first-principles calculations. $\clifour$ and $\olitwo$ bind 12 and 10 hydrogen molecules, respectively, with an average binding energy of 0.10 and 0.13 eV, leading to gravimetric densities of 37.8 and 40.3 weight % H. Bonding between Li and C or O is strongly polar and $\hyd$ molecules attach to the partially charged Li atoms without dissociating, which is favorable for (de)hydrogenation kinetics. CLi$_n$ and OLi$_m$ molecules can be chemically bonded to graphene sheets to hinder the aggregation of such …

We report a first-principles study, which demonstrates that a single Ti atom coated on a single-walled nanotube (SWNT) binds up to four hydrogen molecules. The first H$_2$ adsorption is dissociative with no energy barrier while other three adsorptions are molecular with significantly elongated H-H bonds. At high Ti coverage we show that a SWNT can strongly adsorb up to 8-wt% hydrogen. The system is quite stable and exhibits associative desorption upon heating, a requirement for reversible storage. These results advance our fundamental understanding of dissociative adsorption of hydrogen in nan…
Hydrogen can be stored in containers or in materials. In materials it can exist in molecular or atomic forms. The atomic form can further exist as multiple phases. Molecular hydrogen can be adsorbed on the surface or can be present inside the material. In the current work, we demonstrate for the first time, a methodology to store hydrogen in nearly all conceivable forms. At the heart of this strategy is the novel concept of storage of molecular hydrogen in metal Pd nanocontainers. The existence of multiple phases of hydrogen is confirmed by x ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, nuclear magnet…
We have used first-principles methods to investigate how metal atoms dispersed in the interlayer space of graphitic materials affect their hydrogen-binding properties. We have considered ideal stage-one metal-intercalated graphites of various compositions as representative model systems. Our calculations suggest that alkaline earth metals can significantly enhance the hydrogen storage properties: for example, Be and Mg atoms would act as binding sites of three or four hydrogen molecules, with binding energies per H$_2$ in the 0.2--0.7 eV range, as required for applications. We also find that a…
Finding a suitable material for hydrogen storage at ambient atmospheric conditions is challenging for material scientists and chemists. In this work, using a first principles based cluster expansion approach, the hydrogen storage capacity of Ti2AC (A = Al,Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) MAX phase and its alloys were studied. We found that hydrogen is energetically stable in Ti-A layers in which the tetrahedral site consisting of one A atom and three Ti atoms is energetically more favorable for hydrogen adsorption than other sites in the Ti-A layer. Ti2CuC has the highest hydrogen adsorptio…
The search for suitable materials for solid-state stationary storage of green hydrogen is pushing the implementation of efficient renewable energy systems. This involves rational design and modification of cheap alloys for effective storage in mild conditions of temperature and pressure. Among many intermetallic compounds described in the literature, TiFe-based systems have recently regained vivid interest as materials for practical applications since they are low-cost and they can be tuned to match required pressure and operation conditions. This work aims to provide a comprehensive review of…
The capacity of Ti-capped sp carbon atomic chains for use as hydrogen storage media is studied using first-principles density functional theory. The Ti atom is strongly attached at one end of the carbon chains via d-p hybridization, forming stable TiCn complexes. We demonstrate that the number of adsorbed H2 on Ti through Kubas interaction depends upon the chain types. For polyyne (n even) or cumulene (n odd) structures, each Ti atom can hold up to five or six H2 molecules, respectively. Furthermore, the TiC5 chain effectively terminated on a C20 fullerene can store hydrogen with optimal bindi…
Palladium satisfies most of the requirements for an effective hydrogen storage material with two major drawbacks: it has a relatively low gravimetric hydrogen density and is prohibitively expensive for large-scale applications. Pd-based alloys should be considered as possible alternatives to a pure Pd. The question is how much one can dilute the Pd concentration in a variety of candidate materials while preserving hydrogen absorption capability. We demonstrate that the resistivity measurements of thin-film alloy samples can be used for a qualitative high-throughput screening and study of the h…
Properties of transition metal (TM) doped single wall (8,0) SiC nanotube is investigated using first principles density functional theory as implemented within quantum espresso code. The properties studied are electronic, optical, and hydrogen storage prospect, while the transition metals used in the doping are Iron, Manganese, and Cobalt. The outcomes show that ferromagnetic ordering better describes the magnetic order within the doping process. The dopings result in half-metallic property. Hybridization between TM-3d and C-2p near Fermi-level region contributes to occurrence of the half-meta…
Usually the ions of a particular element in solids are in positive or negative oxidation states, depending upon the chemical environment. It is highly unusual for an atom having both positive as well as negative oxidation states simultaneously within the same structural framework in a particular compound. Our structural and chemical bonding analyses show that the hydrogen ions in the transition metal ammine borohydrides (TMABHs) with the chemical formula M(BH4)2(NH3)2 (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) have both positive and negative oxidation states. Our detailed analyses confirm …

We report a first-principles study of hydrogen storage media consisting of calcium atoms and graphene-based nanostructures. We find that Ca atoms prefer to be individually adsorbed on the zigzag edge of graphene with a Ca-Ca distance of 10 A without clustering of the Ca atoms, and up to six H2 molecules can bind to a Ca atom with a binding energy of ~0.2 eV/H2. A Ca-decorated zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) can reach the gravimetric capacity of ~5 wt % hydrogen. We also consider various edge geometries of the graphene for Ca dispersion.
Recently, Liu et al. reported that Ti2CTx MXene have ultra-high hydrogen storage capacity (8.8 wt.%) at room temperature. For the purpose to clearly understand the hydrogen storage (H-storage), the composition of studied samples should be clearly characterized and the H-storage structure need be explored. To achieve 8.8 wt.% capacity, 3 layers of H2 molecules need be stored in the interlayer space of MXene with the structure of Ti2CF2H14. The H2 layers with graphene-like 2D structure are in solid/liquid state at room temperature, which is significant in the explore new materials with surprisin…
Sorbent materials are a promising alternative to advance hydrogen storage technologies. The general disadvantage is the relatively weak solid-gas interaction and adsorption energy, providing low gravimetric and volumetric capacities and extreme operational conditions. Here we propose Au-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as an efficient alternative for reversible hydrogen capture at high temperatures. This work investigates the properties of several modified CNTs using density functional theory. We analyze the binding and formation energies of the uniformed Au-doped CNTs and assess their adsorption…
The use of a novel three-dimensional graphene structure allows circumventing the limitations of the two-dimensional nature of graphene and its application in hydrogen absorption. Here we investigate hydrogen-bonding on monolayer graphene conformally grown via the epitaxial growth method on the (0001) face of a porousified 4H-SiC wafer. Hydrogen absorption is studied via Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy (TDS), exposing the samples to either atomic (D) or molecular (D2) deuterium. The graphene growth temperature, hydrogen exposure temperature, and the morphology of the structure are investigated …
Nitrogen-doped graphene was recently synthesized and was reported to be a catalyst for hydrogen dissociative adsorption under a perpendicular applied electric field (F). In this work, the diffusion of H atoms on N-doped graphene, in the presence and absence of an applied perpendicular electric field, is studied using density functional theory. We demonstrate that the applied field can significantly facilitate the binding of hydrogen molecules on N-doped graphene through dissociative adsorption and diffusion on the surface. By removing the applied field the absorbed H atoms can be released effi…

The present research work is focused on the effect of activation procedure on the hydrogen absorption-desorption properties of new rare earth transition metal compound based on Sm(Co0.6Fe0.2Zr0.16B0.04)7.5 composition. Crystal structure and composition is always connected to the maximum capacity of the intermetallic hydrides. For composite materials the thermodynamic properties of hydrogenation & dehydrogenation procedure are mostly explained through microstructure-microchemistry characteristics. Efficient hydrogen storage is direct connected to the desorbed hydrogen amount. The as hydrogenate…
We have found that a beryllium (Be) atom on nanostructured materials with H2 molecules generates a Kubas-like dihydrogen complex [H. Lee et al. arXiv:1002.2247v1 (2010)]. Here, we investigate the feasibility of Be-decorated fullerenes for hydrogen storage using ab initio calculations. We find that the aggregation of Be atoms on pristine fullerenes is energetically preferred, resulting in the dissociation of the dihydrogen. In contrast, for boron (B)-doped fullerenes, Be atoms prefer to be individually attached to B sites of the fullerenes, and a maximum of one H2 molecule binds to each Be atom…
Using first-principles calculations, we perform a search for high-capacity hydrogen storage media based on individually dispersed calcium atoms on doped or defective carbon nanotubes. We find that up to six H2 molecules can bind to a Ca atom each with a desirable binding energy of ~0.2 eV/H2. The hybridization of the empty Ca 3d states with the H2 sigma states contributes to the H2 binding, and Ca clustering is suppressed by preferential binding of Ca atoms to doped boron and defect sites dispersed on carbon nanotubes. We also show that individual Ca-decorated B-doped CNTs with a concentration…
In order to overcome the disadvantages of MgH2 towards its applications in on-board hydrogen storage, first principle calculations have been performed for Ti (2+, 3+, and 4+) substituted MgH2. Our calculated enthalpy of formation and H site energy implies that Ti substitution in Mg site reduces the stability of MgH2 which improve the hydrogen storage properties and Ti prefers to be in +4 oxidation state in MgH2. The bonding analyses through partial density of states, electron localization function and Bader charge of these systems confirm the existence of iono-covalent bonding. Electronic stru…

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has published a progression of technical targets to be satisfied by on-board rechargeable hydrogen storage systems in light-duty vehicles. By combining simplified storage system and vehicle models with interpolated data from metal hydride databases, we obtain material-level requirements for metal hydrides that can be assembled into systems that satisfy the DOE targets for 2017. We assume minimal balance-of-plant components for systems with and without a hydrogen combustion loop for supplemental heating. Tank weight and volume are driven by the strin…

The effects of fluorine functionalization on the hydrogen storage capability of alkaline decorated III\textsubscript{4}-V\textsubscript{4} monolayers is studied. This structure can store up to two hydrogen molecules per alkaline atom. Here, we demonstrate that functionalizing alkaline decorated monolayer with a high electronegative element of fluorine can significantly enhance both binding energy and the maximum number of the stored hydrogen molecules. In this regard, the hydrogen molecule storage capability is notably improved from two to four and when absolute binding is considered. In addit…
Using density functional theory we show that an applied electric field substantially improves the hydrogen storage properties of a BN sheet by polarizing the hydrogen molecules as well as the substrate. The adsorption energy of a single H2 molecule in the presence of an electric field of 0.05 a.u. is 0.48 eV compared to 0.07 eV in its absence. When one layer of H2 molecules is adsorbed, the binding energy per H2 molecule increases from 0.03 eV in the field-free case to 0.14 eV/H2 in the presence of an electric field of 0.045 a.u. The corresponding gravimetric density of 7.5 wt % is consistent …
The hydrogen-methane compound (H_2)_4CH_4---or for short H4M---is one of the most promising hydrogen-storage materials. This van der Waals compound is extremely rich in molecular hydrogen: 33.3 mass%, not including the hydrogen bound in CH_4; including it, we reach even 50.2 mass%. Unfortunately, H4M is not stable under ambient pressure and temperature, requiring either low temperature or high pressure. In this paper, we investigate the properties and structure of the molecular and crystalline forms of H4M, using ab initio methods based on van der Waals DFT (vdW-DF). We further investigate the…
By using a newly fitted multi-parameter potential to describe the van der Waals interaction between carbon and molecular hydrogen, we study the hydrogen storage inside carbon nanotubes (CNT's) under pressure in gigapascal range. Comparing with the results of graphite, we find that the shape change of the nanotubes (the curvature effect) provides a different storage mechanism for hydrogen. The negative free energy change for hydrogen storage inside CNT's makes it possible to use CNT's as the nanocontainer [Carbon 45, 315 (2007)].
The Lithium-Boron Reactive Hydride Composite System (Li-RHC) (2 LiH + MgB$_{2}$ / 2 LiBH$_{4}$ + MgH$_{2}$) is a high-temperature hydrogen storage material suitable for energy storage applications. Herein, a comprehensive gas-solid kinetic model for hydrogenation is developed. Based on thermodynamic measurements under absorption conditions, the system's enthalpy $Δ$H and entropy $Δ$S are determined to amount to -34 $\pm$ 2 kJ $\cdot$ mol H$_{2}^{-1}$ and -70 $\pm$ 3 J $\cdot$ K$^{-1}$ $\cdot$ mol H$_{2}^{-1}$, respectively. Based on the thermodynamic behavior assessment, the kinetic measuremen…
Ab initio density-functional theory study suggests that pillared Li-dispersed boron carbide nanotubes is capable of storing hydrogen with a mass density higher than 6.0 weight% and a volumetric density higher than 45 g/L. The boron substitution in carbon nanotube greatly enhances the binding energy of Li atom to the nanotube, and this binding energy (~ 2.7 eV) is greater than the cohesive energy of lithium metal (~1.7 eV), preventing lithium from aggregation (or segregation) at high lithium doping concentration. The adsorption energy of hydrogen on the Li-dispersed boron carbide nanotube is in…
The increase in threats from global warming due to the consumption of fossil fuels requires our planet to adopt new strategies to harness the inexhaustible sources of energy. Hydrogen is an energy carrier which holds tremendous promise as a new renewable and clean energy option. Hydrogen is a convenient, safe, versatile fuel source that can be easily converted to a desired form of energy without releasing harmful emissions. However, no materials was found satisfy the desired goals and hence there is hunt for new materials that can store hydrogen reversibly at ambient conditions. In this chapte…
We have performed cascade genetic algorithm and ab initio atomistic thermodynamics under the framework of first-principles density functional theory to study the (meta-)stability of a wide range of LixNy clusters. We found that hybrid xc-functional is essential to address this problem as a local/semi-local functional simply fails even to predict a qualitative prediction. Most importantly, we find that though in bulk Lithium Nitride, Li rich phase, i.e. Li3N, is the stable stoichiometry, in small LixNy clusters N-rich phases are more stable at thermodynamic equilibrium. We further show a that t…
TiFe intermetallic compound has been extensively studied, owing to its low cost, good volumetric hydrogen density, and easy tailoring of hydrogenation thermodynamics by elemental substitution. All these positive aspects make this material promising for large-scale applications of solid-state hydrogen storage. On the other hand, activation and kinetic issues should be amended and the role of elemental substitution should be further understood. This work investigates the thermodynamic changes induced by the variation of Ti content along the homogeneity range of the TiFe phase (Ti:Fe ratio from 1…
