We study the hydrogen storage properties of planar boron sheets and compare them to those of graphene. The binding of molecular hydrogen to the boron sheet (0.05 eV) is stronger than that to graphene. We find that dispersion of alkali metal (AM = Li, Na, and K) atoms onto the boron sheet markedly increases hydrogen binding energies and storage capacities. The unique structure of the boron sheet presents a template for creating a stable lattice of strongly bonded metal atoms with a large nearest neighbor distance. In contrast, AM atoms dispersed on graphene tend to cluster to form a bulk metal. In particular the boron-Li system is found to be a good candidate for hydrogen storage purposes. In the fully loaded case this compound can contain up to 10.7 wt. % molecular hydrogen with an average binding energy of 0.15 eV/H2.
Systematic ab initio structure prediction was applied for the first time to predict low energy surface reconstructions by employing the minima hopping method on the α-boron (111) surface. Novel reconstruction geometries were identified and carefully characterized in terms of structural and electronic properties. Our calculations predict the formation of a planar, mono-layer sheet at the surface, which is responsible for conductive surface states. Furthermore, the isolated boron sheet is shown to be the ground state 2D-structure in vacuum at a hole density of η=1/5 and is therefore a potential …
The icosahedra boron chain and three icosahedra sheets (with α, δ4, and δ6 symmetries), constructed by the icosahedra B12, have been obtained as new members of boron family using a highly efficient molecular dynamics scheme based on a transferable and reliable semi-empirical Hamiltonian. The icosahedral B12 in the icosahedra chain is slightly elongated along the china direction and directly bonded each other with the two-center covalent bonds. A deformation of the icosahedra B12 was also found in the two-dimensional icosahedra sheets. In addition to the three-center bonding nature inside the i…
The search for metallic boron allotropes has attracted great attention in the past decades and recent theoretical works predict the existence of metallicity in monolayer boron. Here, we synthesize the \b{eta}12-sheet monolayer boron on a Ag(111) surface and confirm the presence of metallic boron-derived bands using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The Fermi surface is composed of one electron pocket at the S point and a pair of hole pockets near the X point, which is supported by the first-principles calculations. The metallic boron allotrope in \b{eta}12 sheet opens the way to novel…
Boron (B) sheet has been intently studied and various candidates with vacancies have been proposed by theoretical investigations, including the possible growth on metal surface. However, a recent experiment (Science 350, 1513, 2015) reported that the sheet formed on the Ag(111) surface was a buckled triangular lattice without vacancy. Our calculations combined with High-Throughput screening and the first-principles method demonstrate a novel growth mechanism of boron sheet from clusters, ribbons, to monolayers, where the B-Ag interaction is dominant in the nucleation of boron nanostructures. W…
The electronic and the structural properties of two dimensional van der Waals metal/semiconductor heterostructures have been investigated through first-principles calculations. We have considered the recently synthesized borophene [Science {\bf 350}, 1513 (2015)], and the planar boron sheets (S1 and S2) [Nature Chemistry {\bf 8}, 563 (2016)] as the 2D metal layer, and the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) \mose, and \wse\ as the semiconductor monolayer. We find that the energetic stability of those 2D metal/semiconductor heterojunctions is mostly ruled by the vdW interactions; however, …
The configurations, stability and electronic structures of a new class of boron sheet and related boron nanotubes are predicted within the framework of density functional theory. This boron sheet is sparser than those of recent proposals. Our theoretic results show that the stable boron sheet remains flat and is metallic. There are bands similar to the p-bands in graphite near the Fermi level. Stable nanotubes with various diameters and chiral vectors can be rolled from the sheet. Within our study, only the thin (8, 0) nanotube with a band gap of 0.44 eV is semiconducting, while all the other …
Spin-polarized density functional theory calculations have been performed on armchair graphene quantum dots and boron-nitride quantum dots (A-G/BN-QDs) and the effect of carbon/boron-nitride substitution on the electronic properties of these A-G/BN-QDs has been investigated. As a first step to consider more realistic quantum dots, quantum dots which are a combination of zigzag QDs and armchair QDs have been considered. Effect of substitution on these hybrid quantum dots has been explored for both GQDs and BNQDs and such results have been compared and contrasted with the results of substituted …
Boron is the fifth element in the periodic table and possesses rich chemistry second only to carbon. A striking feature of boron is that B12 icosahedral cages occur as the building blocks in bulk boron and many boron compounds. This is in contrast to its neighboring element, carbon, which prefers 2D layered structure (graphite) in its bulk form. On the other hand, boron clusters of medium size have been predicted to be planar or quasi-planar, such as B12+ , B13+, B19-, B36, and so on. This is also in contrast to carbon clusters which exhibit various cage structures (fullerenes). Therefore, bor…
We present in this work the size-dependent and shape-dependent properties of carbon domains in hybrid h-BN/C sheets with the goal of tailoring their energy gaps. We have considered triangular, hexagonal, circular, and rectangular carbon domains embedded in h-BN sheets and optimized the structure of these h-BN/C sheets using the recently developed semi-empirical method, referred as SCED-LCAO. Calculated energy gaps of hybrid h-BN/C sheets exhibit interesting size- and shape-dependent properties. The energy gap of h-BN/C sheets embedded with rectangular domains shows a semi-metal behavior, while…
Molecular adsorption on surfaces is a key element for many applications, including sensing and catalysis. Non-invasive sugar sensing has been an active area of research due to its importance to diabetes care. The adsorption of sugars on a template surface study is at the heart of matter. Here, we study doped hexagonal boron nitride sheets ($h$-BNNs) as adsorbing and sensing template for glucose and glucosamine. Using first principles calculations, we find that the adsorption of glucose and glucosamine on $h$-BNNs is significantly enhanced by the substitutional doping of the sheet with Al and G…
We have carried out first-principles calculations on electronic properties of graphene quantum dots embedded in hexagonal boron nitride monolayer sheets. The calculations with density functional theory show that the band gaps of quantum dots are determined by the quantum confinement effects and the hybridization of π orbitals from B, N and C atoms. The energy states near the Fermi level are found to be strongly localized within and in the vicinity of the quantum dots.
Recently, two-dimensional boron sheets have attracted a lot of attentions owing to their structural polymorphs and outstanding properties. And, due to chemical complexity and electron deficiency of B atoms, the 2D boron sheets are easy affected by the environment. So, exploring novel 2D boron oxides gets highly needed. In this study, we theoretically explored 2D boron oxides structures and their basic properties. We found 2D boron oxides are metals or semimetals, when oxygen concentration is low. More interesting, the B6O1 exhibits Dirac Loop near the Fermi level and the maximum Fermi velocity…
In this work we report results of step-by-step modeling of the oxidation of free-standing boron monolayers of different types. Results of the calculations demonstrate that the process of the oxidation is always exothermic and lead toward the formation of foam-like boron oxide films with incorporated non-oxidized small boron clusters. Some of these boron-oxide films demonstrate the presence of chemically stable magnetic centers. Evaluation of the physical properties of oxidized boprophene sheets (OBS) demonstrate it possible application in solar energy, as sensors and coating against leakage of…
There is enormous recent interest in weak, van der Waals-type (vdW) interactions due to their fundamental relevance for two-dimensional materials and the so-called vdW heterostructures. Tackling this problem using computer simulation is very challenging due to the non-trivial, non-local nature of these interactions. We benchmark different treatments of London dispersion forces within the density functional theory (DFT) framework on hexagonal boron nitride or graphene monolayers on Ir(111) by comparing the calculated geometries to a comprehensive set of experimental data. The geometry of these …
Efficient adsorption and segregation of Xe & Kr gases is of high importance in commercial as well as nuclear industries. Systematic ab initio calculations reveal that transition metal (TM) decorated boron doped graphene (BDG-TM) sheet can act as an efficient substrate for adsorptive capture of Xe & Kr (adatoms). Substantial enhancement in the adsorption energy (E_ads) is obtained on BDG-TM substrates and it varies as BDG-Cu > BDG-Ni > BDG-Fe > BDG-Zn. The improvement is approximately four times of the pristine BDG and twice that of the conventional metallic substrates. Badar charge analysis an…
Two different types of boron-doped graphene/copper interfaces synthesized using two different flow rates of Ar through the bubbler containing the boron source were studied. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and optically stimulated electron emission (OSEE) measurements have demonstrated that boron-doped graphene coating provides a high corrosion resistivity of Cu-substrate with the light traces of the oxidation of carbon cover. The density functional theory calculations suggest that for the case of substitutional (graphitic) boron-defect only the oxidation near boron impurity is energetically …
The most recent experimental advances could provide ways for the fabrication of several atomic thick and planar forms of boron atoms. For the first time, we explore the mechanical properties of five types of boron films with various vacancy ratios ranging from 0.1 to 0.15, using molecular dynamics simulations with ReaxFF force field. It is found that the Young's modulus and tensile strength decrease with increasing the temperature. We found that boron sheets exhibit an anisotropic mechanical response due to the different arrangement of atoms along the armchair and zigzag directions. At room te…
Inspired by the successful synthesis of several allotropes, boron sheets have been one of the hottest spot areas of focus in various fields. Here, we study phonon transport in three types of boron nanoribbons with zigzag and armchair edges by using a non-equilibrium Green's function combined with first principles methods. Diverse transport properties are found in the nanoribbons. At the room temperature, their highest thermal conductance can be comparable with that of graphene, while the lowest thermal conductance is less than half of graphene's. The three boron sheets exhibit different anisot…
Using atomistic simulations we investigate the thermodynamical properties of a single atomic layer of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). The thermal induced ripples, heat capacity, and thermal lattice expansion of large scale h-BN sheets are determined and compared to those found for graphene (GE) for temperatures up to 1000 K. By analyzing the mean square height fluctuations $< h^2>$ and the height-height correlation function $H(q)$ we found that the h-BN sheet is a less stiff material as compared to graphene. The bending rigidity of h-BN: i) is about 16% smaller than the one of GE at room tempe…
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a two dimensional (2D) layered insulator with superior dielectric performance that offers excellent interaction with other 2D materials (e.g. graphene, MoS2). Large-area h-BN can be readily grown on metallic substrates via chemical vapor deposition (CVD), but the impact of local inhomogeneities on the electrical properties of the h-BN and their effect in electronic devices is unknown. Here it is shown that the electrical properties of h-BN stacks grown on polycrystalline Pt vary a lot depending on the crystalline orientation of the Pt grain, but within the sam…
When combined with graphene, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is an ideal substrate and gate dielectric with which to build metalh-BN|graphene field-effect devices. We use first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations for Cu|h-BN|graphene stacks to study how the graphene doping depends on the thickness of the h-BN layer and on a potential difference applied between Cu and graphene. We develop an analytical model that describes the doping very well, allowing us to identify the key parameters that govern the device behaviour. A predicted intrinsic doping of graphene is particularly…
Two-dimensional boron monolayer (borophene) stands out from the two-dimensional atomic layered materials due to its structural flexibility, tunable electronic and mechanical properties from a large number of allotropic materials. The stability of pristine borophene polymorphs could possibly be improved via hydrogenation with atomic hydrogen (referred to as borophane). However, the precise adsorption structures and the underlying mechanism are still elusive. Employing first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the optimal configurations of freestanding borophanes and the ones grown on metall…
We perform first-principles calculations to investigate the structural and electronic properties of metal-doped (10, 0) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on a single hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) sheet in the presence of an external electric field. We consider K, Cl and Ni atoms as dopants to study the dependence of the electronic properties of the CNT on doping polarity and concentration. The electric field strength is varied from -0.2 V/Åto +0.2 V/Åto explore the effects of an external electric field on the electronic structures. Although the electronic energy bands of the hBN sheet are modified in ac…
Recently hybridized monolayers consisting of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) phases inside graphene layer have been synthesized and shown to be an effective way of opening band gap in graphene monolayers [1]. In this letter, we report an ab initio density functional theory (DFT)- based study of h-BN domain size effect on the elastic properties of graphene/boron nitride hybrid monolayers (h-BNC). We found both inplane stiffness and longitudinal sound velocity of h-BNC linearly decrease with h-BN concentration.
We present an ab initio, self consistent density functional theory (DFT) description of ground state electronic and related properties of hexagonal boron nitride (hex-BN). We used a local density approximation (LDA) potential and the linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) formalism. We rigorously implemented the Bagayoko, Zhao, and Williams (BZW) method, as enhanced by Ekuma and Franklin (BZW-EF). The method ensures a generalized minimization of the energy that is far beyond what can be obtained with self-consistency iterations using a single basis set. The method leads to the ground sta…
In the present study, the structural and hitherto uninvestigated mechanical (elastic stiffness constants, machinability index, Cauchy pressure, anisotropy indices, brittleness/ductility, Poissons ratio), electronic, optical, and thermodynamic properties of novel boron-rich compounds B6X (X = S, Se) have been explored using density functional theory. The estimated structural lattice parameters were consistent with the prior report. The mechanical and dynamical stability of these compounds have been established theoretically. The materials are brittle in nature and elastically anisotropic. The v…
We explain the nature of the electronic band gap and optical absorption spectrum of Carbon - Boron Nitride (CBN) hybridized monolayers using density functional theory (DFT), GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations. The CBN optoelectronic properties result from the overall monolayer bandstructure, whose quasiparticle states are controlled by the C domain size and lie at separate energy for C and BN without significant mixing at the band edge, as confirmed by the presence of strongly bound bright exciton states localized within the C domains. The resulting absorption spectra show two marked …
We introduce an interatomic potential for hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) based on the Gaussian approximation potential (GAP) machine learning methodology. The potential is based on a training set of configurations collected from density functional theory (DFT) simulations and is capable of treating bulk and multilayer hBN as well as nanotubes of arbitrary chirality. The developed force field faithfully reproduces the potential energy surface predicted by DFT while improving the efficiency by several orders of magnitude. We test our potential by comparing formation energies, geometrical properti…
The typical two-dimensional semiconductors, group \uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral3A} chalcogenides, have garnered tremendous interest for their outstanding electronic, mechanical, and chemical properties. However, so far, there have been almost no reports on boron monosulfides (BS) binary material. Here, four two-dimensional BS sheets, namely the $α$-, $β$-, $γ$-, and $δ$-BS sheets, are proposed and discussed from $\emph{ab initio}$ calculations. State-of-the-art first-principles calculations reveal all these structures are thermally and dynamically stable, indicating the potential for su…
The recent discovery of borophene, a two-dimensional allotrope of boron, raises many questions about its structure and its chemical and physical properties. Boron has a high chemical affinity to oxygen but little is known about the oxidation behavior of borophene. Here we use first principles calculations to study the phase diagram of free-standing, two-dimensional $\mathrm{B_{1-x}O_x}$ for compositions ranging from $x=0$ to $x=0.6$, which correspond to borophene and $\mathrm{B_2O_3}$ sheets, respectively. Our results indicate that no stable compounds except borophene and $\mathrm{B_2O_3}$ she…
In three out of five cases considered in our work, DFT calculations presented by Xu and Hou in their Comment give the same ground state confirmations. On the other hand, depending on the choice of the exchange-correlation functional, the geometry optimization within DFT results in different ground state confirmations for B@C60 and B60, Table I of the Comment. Therefore, the energy balance between nearest confirmations in these molecular complexes is subtle, and various methods can give different ground state structures. Consequently, the results of our method - the Hartree-Fock (HF) approach w…
The structural similarity between hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and graphene nanoribbons allows for the formation of heterojunctions with small chain stress. The combination of the insulation nature of the former and the quasi-metallic property of the latter makes this kind of heterostructure particularly interesting for flat optoelectronics. Recently, it was experimentally demonstrated that the shapes of the graphene and h-BN domains can be controlled precisely, and sharp graphene/h-BN interfaces can be created. Here, we investigated the electronic and structural properties of graphene (h-BN…
The effect of external static charging on borophenes - 2D boron crystals - is investigated by using first principles calculations. The influence of the excess negative charge on the stability of the 2D structures is examined using a very simple analysis of decomposition of the binding energy of a given boron layer into contributions coming from boron atoms that have different coordination numbers. This analysis is important to understand how the local neighbourhood of an atom influences the overall stability of the monolayer structure. The decomposition is done for the $α$-sheet and its relate…
We present an efficient implementation of the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) for optical properties of materials in the projector augmented wave method GPAW. Single-particle energies and wave functions are obtained from the GLLBSC functional which explicitly includes the derivative discontinuity, is computationally inexpensive, and yields excellent fundamental gaps. Electron-hole interactions are included through the BSE using the statically screened interaction evaluated in the random phase approximation. For a representative set of semiconductors and insulators we find excellent agreement wit…
The influence of triaxial in-plane strain on the electronic properties of a hexagonal boron-nitride sheet is investigated using density functional theory. Different from graphene, the triaxial strain localizes the molecular orbitals of the boron-nitride flake in its center depending on the direction of the applied strain. The proposed technique for localizing the molecular orbitals that are close to the Fermi level in the center of boron nitride flakes can be used to actualize engineered nanosensors, for instance, to selectively detect gas molecules. We show that the central part of the strain…
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a prominent member in the growing family of two-dimensional materials with potential applications ranging from being an atomically smooth support for other 2D materials to templating growth of molecular layers. We have studied the structure of monolayer h-BN grown by chemical vapour deposition on Ir(111) by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) experiments and state-of-the-art density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The lattice-mismatch between the h-BN and Ir(111) surface results in the formation of a moiré superstru…
Ab initio density functional theory (DFT) and DFT plus coherent potential approximation (DFT+CPA) are employed to reveal, respectively, the effect of in-plane strain and site-diagonal disorder on the electronic structure of cubic boron arsenide (BAs). It is demonstrated that tensile strain and static diagonal disorder both reduce the semiconducting one-particle band gap of BAs, and a V-shaped p-band electronic state emerges -- enabling advanced valleytronics based on strained and disordered semiconducting bulk crystals. At biaxial tensile strains close to 15% the valence band lineshape relevan…
First principles based DFT calculations performed to insight structural and electronic properties of Boron doped Magnesium atom decorated graphene sheet for application of hydrogen storage. The four H2 molecules stably binds magnesium atom with Boron doped graphene sheet. The average binding energy extracted in the range-0.566 to -0.687 eV/H2.Partial density of states of complex system shows s and d orbitals of H2 molecule and Mg atom at -0.1eV overlaps of main peaks indicates strong hybridizing and binding of s and d orbitals of H2 and Mg atom respectively. The gravimetric capacity of studied…
Based on the first-principles evolutionary materials design, we report a stable boron Kagome lattice composed of triangles in triangles on a two-dimensional sheet. The Kagome lattice can be synthesized on a silver substrate, with selecting Mg atoms as guest atoms. While the isolated Kagome lattice is slightly twisted without strain, it turns into an ideal triangular Kagome lattice under tensile strain. In the triangular Kagome lattice, we find the exotic electronic properties, such as topologically non-trivial flat band near the Fermi energy and half-metallic ferromagnetism, and predict the qu…

The density functional theory (DFT) is used to investigate the mechanical properties of pure, fully hydrogenated, semi-hydrogenated, fully fluorinated, and semi-fluorinated germanene sheets, including Young's and bulk moduli, and plastic properties. Also, the electronic properties, namely the planar average electron difference density, are considered to evaluate the bonding characteristics of pure and adsorbed germanenes. The results show that the effect of adsorption decreases the electron accumulation between Ge atoms, i.e. weaker covalent bonds. This weakening in the covalent bonds results …
We present an ab-initio study of electron mobility and electron-phonon coupling in chemically modified graphene, considering fluorinated and hydrogenated graphene at different percentage coverage. Hexagonal Boron Carbon Nitrogen (h-BCN) is also investigated due the increased interest shown by the research community towards this material. In particular, the Deformation Potentials are computed by means of Density Functional Theory (DFT), while the carrier mobility is obtained according to the Takagi model (S. Takagi, A. Toriumi, and H. Tango, IEEE Trans. Electr. Dev. 41, 2363 (1994)). We will sh…
We investigate band-gap tuning of bilayer graphene between hexagonal boron nitride sheets, by external electric fields. Using density functional theory, we show that the gap is continuously tunable from 0 to 0.2 eV, and is robust to stacking disorder. Moreover, boron nitride sheets do not alter the fundamental response from that of free-standing bilayer graphene, apart from additional screening. The calculations suggest that the graphene-boron nitride heterostructures could provide a viable route to graphene-based electronic devices.
Raman spectroscopy has become an essential technique to characterize and investigate graphene and many other two-dimensional materials. However, there still lacks consensus on the Raman signature and phonon dispersion of atomically thin boron nitride (BN), which has many unique properties distinct from graphene. Such a knowledge gap greatly affects the understanding of basic physical and chemical properties of atomically thin BN as well as the use of Raman spectroscopy to study these nanomaterials. Here, we use both experiment and simulation to reveal the intrinsic Raman signature of monolayer…
2D ferroelectrics with robust polarization down to atomic thicknesses provide novel building blocks for functional heterostructures. Experimental reports, however, remain scarce because of the requirement of a layered polar crystal. Here, we demonstrate a rational design approach to engineering 2D ferroelectrics from a non-ferroelectric parent compound via employing van der Waals assembly. Parallel-stacked bilayer boron nitride is shown to exhibit out-of-plane electric polarization that reverses depending on the stacking order. The polarization switching is probed via the resistance of an adja…
