Efficient adsorption and segregation of Xe & Kr gases is of high importance in commercial as well as nuclear industries. Systematic ab initio calculations reveal that transition metal (TM) decorated boron doped graphene (BDG-TM) sheet can act as an efficient substrate for adsorptive capture of Xe & Kr (adatoms). Substantial enhancement in the adsorption energy (E_ads) is obtained on BDG-TM substrates and it varies as BDG-Cu > BDG-Ni > BDG-Fe > BDG-Zn. The improvement is approximately four times of the pristine BDG and twice that of the conventional metallic substrates. Badar charge analysis and charge density difference maps envisage that, the TM decoration alters the charge distribution at substrate-adatom interface, which in turn brings a considerable change in the polarization of adatom, leads to significant improvement in the E_ads. The change in polarization of adatoms is interlinked with charge transfer process and it has been gauged by computing their effective charges upon adsorption; which follows the same sequence of E_ads and hence corroborated each other. Later, the partial density of states analysis shows a splitting and strong hybridization of Xe-p with TM-d orbitals near the Fermi level of Fe, Ni and Cu decorated systems, unveils a strong adsorption. Further, the effect of clustering and dispersion of Cu atoms on E_ads are analyzed using a first principle based genetic algorithm, which reveals that clustering of Cu atoms deteriorate the E_ads of Xe & Kr. Thus for experimental realization, BDG sheet with uniformly dispersed fine Cu particles is proposed as a substrate.
The electronic and structural properties of (i) boron doped graphene sheets, and (ii) the chemisorption processes of hydrogen adatoms on the boron doped graphene sheets have been examined by {\it ab initio} total energy calculations.
Novel materials with tunable magnetic states play a significant role in the development of next-generation spintronic devices. In this paper, we examine the role of biaxial strain on the electronic properties of vacancy-decorated hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) monolayers using density functional theory calculations. We found that the strain can lead to switching of the magnetic state for h-BN monolayers with boron vacancy or divacancy. Our findings promise a new route for the operation of low-dimensional spintronic devices.
Molecular adsorption on surfaces is a key element for many applications, including sensing and catalysis. Non-invasive sugar sensing has been an active area of research due to its importance to diabetes care. The adsorption of sugars on a template surface study is at the heart of matter. Here, we study doped hexagonal boron nitride sheets ($h$-BNNs) as adsorbing and sensing template for glucose and glucosamine. Using first principles calculations, we find that the adsorption of glucose and glucosamine on $h$-BNNs is significantly enhanced by the substitutional doping of the sheet with Al and G…

First-principles calculations reveal that the adsorption of representative first-row atoms with different electronegativity, such as lithium (Li), carbon (C) and fluorine (F), on zigzag single-walled boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) exhibits surprising selectivity. The adsorption energy and adsorption site are dependent upon the chemical activity of adsorbate with respect to the B and N atoms in the host tube. In detail, the F atom prefers to be adsorbed on the top of the B atom, the C atom is energetically favorable to stay on the bridge site which is perpendicular to the tube-axis, and the Li…
We study silicene on hexagonal boron nitride, using first principles calculations. Since hexagonal boron nitride is semiconducting, the interaction with silicene is weaker than for metallic substrates. It therefore is possible to open a 50 meV band gap in the silicene. We further address the effect of Mn decoration by determining the onsite Hubbard interaction parameter, which turns out to differ significantly for decoration at the top and hollow sites. The induced magnetism in the system is analyzed in detail.

The average binding energy extracted in the range-0.566 to -0.687 eV/H2.Partial density of states of complex system shows s and d orbitals of H2 molecule and Mg atom at -0.1eV overlaps of main peaks indicates strong hybridizing and binding of s and d orbitals of H2 and Mg atom respectively. The gravimetric capacity of studied…
We report a first-principles study, which demonstrates that a single Ti atom coated on a single-walled nanotube (SWNT) binds up to four hydrogen molecules. The first H$_2$ adsorption is dissociative with no energy barrier while other three adsorptions are molecular with significantly elongated H-H bonds. At high Ti coverage we show that a SWNT can strongly adsorb up to 8-wt% hydrogen. The system is quite stable and exhibits associative desorption upon heating, a requirement for reversible storage. These results advance our fundamental understanding of dissociative adsorption of hydrogen in nan…
Effect of Tube Radius on the Adsorption of Chlorothalonil on Single-Walled Carbon and Boron Nitride Nanotube Surfaces: A Theoretical Study for Environmental Remediation
We study the vicinal surface of the restricted solid-on-solid model coupled with the Langmuir adsorbates which we regard as two-dimensional lattice gas without lateral interaction. The effect of the vapor pressure of the adsorbates in the environmental phase is taken into consideration through the chemical potential. We calculate the surface free energy $f$, the adsorption coverage $Θ$, the step tension $γ$, and the step stiffness $\tildeγ$ by the transfer matrix method combined with the density-matrix algorithm. Detailed step-density-dependence of $f$ and $Θ$ is obtained. We draw the rougheni…
The graphane with chemically bonded alkali metals (Li, Na, K) was considered as potential material for hydrogen storage. The ab initio calculations show that such material can adsorb as many as 4 hydrogen molecules per Li, Na and K metal atoms. These values correspond to 12.20 wt%, 10.33 wt% and 8.56 wt% of hydrogen, respectively and exceed the DOE requirements. The thermodynamic analysis shows that Li-graphane complex is the most promising for hydrogen storage with ability to adsorb 3 hydrogen molecules per metal atom at 300 K and pressure in the range from 5 to 250 atm.
Ab initio calculations within the density-functional theory formalism are performed to investigate the chemical functionalization of a graphene-like monolayer of silicon - silicene - with B, N, Al or P atoms. The structural, electronic, magnetic and vibrational properties are reported. The most preferable adsorption sites are found to be valley, bridge, valley and hill site for B, N, Al and P adatoms, respectively. All the relaxed systems with adsorbed/substituted atoms exhibit metallic behaviour with strongly bonded B, N, Al, and P atoms accompanied by an appreciable electron transfer from si…
Despite a recent flurry of experimental and simulation studies, an accurate estimate of the interaction strength of water molecules with hexagonal boron nitride is lacking. Here we report quantum Monte Carlo results for the adsorption of a water monomer on a periodic hexagonal boron nitride sheet, which yield a water monomer interaction energy of -84 +/- 5 meV. We use the results to evaluate the performance of several widely used density functional theory (DFT) exchange correlation functionals, and find that they all deviate substantially. Differences in interaction energies between different …
The recent progress in the field of hydrogen storage in carbon and boron nitride nanostructures has been summarized. Carbon and boron nitride nanostructures are considered advantageous in this prospect due to their lightweight and high surface area. Demerits of pristine structures to hold hydrogen molecules for mobile applications have been highlighted by many researchers. In such cases, weak van der Waals interaction comes into account, hence, the hydrogen molecules are weakly bonded with the host materials and hence weak adsorption energy and low hydrogen molecules uptake. So, to tune the ad…
Using first-principles calculations, we perform a search for high-capacity hydrogen storage media based on individually dispersed calcium atoms on doped or defective carbon nanotubes. We find that up to six H2 molecules can bind to a Ca atom each with a desirable binding energy of ~0.2 eV/H2. The hybridization of the empty Ca 3d states with the H2 sigma states contributes to the H2 binding, and Ca clustering is suppressed by preferential binding of Ca atoms to doped boron and defect sites dispersed on carbon nanotubes. We also show that individual Ca-decorated B-doped CNTs with a concentration…
We have found that a beryllium (Be) atom on nanostructured materials with H2 molecules generates a Kubas-like dihydrogen complex [H. Lee et al. arXiv:1002.2247v1 (2010)]. Here, we investigate the feasibility of Be-decorated fullerenes for hydrogen storage using ab initio calculations. We find that the aggregation of Be atoms on pristine fullerenes is energetically preferred, resulting in the dissociation of the dihydrogen. In contrast, for boron (B)-doped fullerenes, Be atoms prefer to be individually attached to B sites of the fullerenes, and a maximum of one H2 molecule binds to each Be atom…
Two-dimensional boron monolayer (borophene) stands out from the two-dimensional atomic layered materials due to its structural flexibility, tunable electronic and mechanical properties from a large number of allotropic materials. The stability of pristine borophene polymorphs could possibly be improved via hydrogenation with atomic hydrogen (referred to as borophane). However, the precise adsorption structures and the underlying mechanism are still elusive. Employing first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the optimal configurations of freestanding borophanes and the ones grown on metall…
The doping of graphene to tune its electronic structure is essential for its further use in carbon based electronics. Adapting strategies from classical silicon based semiconductor technology, we use the incorporation of heteroatoms in the 2D graphene network as a straightforward way to achieve this goal. Here, we report on the synthesis of boron-doped graphene on Ni(111) in a chemical vapor deposition process of triethylborane on the one hand and by segregation of boron from the bulk on the other hand. The chemical environment of boron was determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and an…
Using first-principles calculation methods, we study the possibility of realizing quantum anomalous Hall effect in graphene from stable 3\textit{d}-atomic adsorption via charge-compensated \textit{n}-\textit{p} codoping scheme. As concrete examples, we show that long-range ferromagnetism can be established by codoping 3\textit{d} transition metal and boron atoms, but only the Ni codopants can open up a global bulk gap to harbour the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Our estimated ferromagnetic Curie transition temperature can reach over 10 Kelvin for various codoping concentrations.

Lightweight 2D materials due to its large surface area are being studied for its hydrogen storage applications. The characteristics of hydrogen adsorption on the electric field-induced h-BN bilayer were investigated. The overall storage capacity of the bilayer is 6.7 wt% from our theoretical calculation with E ads of 0.308 eV/H$_2$. The desorption temperature for H$_2$ molecules from the h-BN bilayer system in the absence of an external electric field is 243 K. With the introduction of an external electric field, the E$_{\rm ads}$ lies in the range 0.311-0.918 eV/H$_2$ with a desorption temper…
By applying density functional theory (DFT) and ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, we predict the ultrahigh hydrogen storage capacity of K and Ca decorated single-layer biphenylene sheet (BPS). We have kept various alkali and alkali earth metals, including Na, Be, Mg, K, Ca, at different sites of BPS and found that K and Ca atoms prefer to bind individually on the BPS instead of forming clusters. It was found that 2x2x1 supercell of biphenylene sheet can adsorb eight K, or eight Ca atoms, and each K or Ca atom can adsorb 5 H$_2$, leading to 11.90 % or 11.63 % of hydrogen uptake, …
Motivated by the recent successful synthesis of biphenylene structure [Science 372, (2021), 852], we have explored the sensing properties of this material towards the catechol biomolecule by performing the first-principles density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations. Pristine biphenylene sheet adsorbs catechol molecule with a binding energy of -0.35 eV, which can be systematically improved by decorating the transition metals (Ag, Au, Pd, and Ti) at various possible sites of biphenylene. It is observed that the catechol molecule is adsorbed on Pd and Ti-decorated biphenylene sh…
Atomically thin boron nitride (BN) nanosheets have been found an excellent substrate for noble metal particles enabled surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), thanks to their good adsorption of aromatic molecules, high thermal stability and weak Raman scattering. Faceted gold (Au) nanoparticles have been synthesized on BN nanosheets by a simple but controllable and reproducible sputtering and annealing method. The size and density of the Au particles can be controlled by sputtering time, current and annealing temperature etc. Under the same sputtering and annealing conditions, the Au parti…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been studied extensively as monolayers 1-5, vertical or lateral heterostructures 6-8. To achieve functionalization, monolayers are often patterned using soft lithography and selectively decorated with molecules 9,10. Here we demonstrate the growth of a family of 2D materials that are intrinsically patterned. We demonstrate that a monolayer of PtSe2 can be grown on a Pt substrate in the form of a triangular pattern of alternating 1T and 1H phases. Moreover, we show that, in a monolayer of CuSe grown on a Cu substrate, strain relaxation leads to periodic patte…
The adsorption of benzene and C60 on graphene and boron nitride (BN) is studied using density functional theory with the non-local correlation functional vdW-DF. By comparing these systems we can systematically investigate their adsorption nature and differences between the two functional versions vdW-DF1 and vdW-DF2. The bigger size of the C60 molecule makes it bind stronger to the surface than benzene, yet the interface between the molecules and the sheets are similar in nature. The binding separation is more sensitive to the exchange variant used in vdW-DF than to the correlation version. T…

In this work, we have explored the catalytic activity of a newly predicted haeckelite boron nitride quantum dot (haeck-BNQD), constructed from the infinite BN sheet, for its utilization in hydrogen production. Density functional theory calculations are emplo…
Novel uses for 2-dimensional materials like graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) are being frequently discovered especially for membrane and catalysis applications. Still however, a great deal remains to be understood about the interaction of environmentally and industrially elevant molecules such as water with these materials. Taking inspiration from advances in hybridising graphene and h-BN, we explore using density functional theory, the dissociation of water, hydrogen, methane, and methanol on graphene, h-BN, and their isoelectronic doped counterparts: BN doped graphene and C doped …

It is found that the decoration of HEA nanoparticles impart surface enhanced Raman scattering effect and reduction in the work function of th…
Expanding pollution and rapid consumption of natural reservoirs (gas, oil, and coal) led humankind to explore alternative energy fuels like hydrogen fuel. Solid-state hydrogen storage is most desirable because of its usefulness in the onboard vehicle. In this work, we explored the yttrium decorated ultra porous, two-dimensional holey-graphyne for hydrogen storage. Using the first principles DFT simulations, we predict that yttrium doped holey graphyne can adsorb up to seven hydrogen molecules per yttrium atom resulting in a gravimetric hydrogen weight percentage of 9.34, higher than the target…

The gravimetric wt % of hydrogen for the scandium decorated C$_{24}$ fullerene system is 13.02%, which is sufficiently higher than the Department of Energy, United States demand. Electronic structure, orbital interactions, and charge transfer mechanisms are explained using the density of states, spatial charge density difference pl…
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a useful multidisciplinary analytic technique. However, it is still a challenge to produce SERS substrates that are highly sensitive, reproducible, stable, reusable, and scalable. Here, we demonstrate that atomically thin boron nitride (BN) nanosheets have many unique and desirable properties to help solve this challenge. The synergic effect of the atomic thickness, high flexibility, stronger surface adsorption capability, electrical insulation, impermeability, high thermal and chemical stability of BN nanosheets can increase the Raman sensitivity …
Inspired by the successful synthesis of several allotropes, boron sheets have been one of the hottest spot areas of focus in various fields. Here, we study phonon transport in three types of boron nanoribbons with zigzag and armchair edges by using a non-equilibrium Green's function combined with first principles methods. Diverse transport properties are found in the nanoribbons. At the room temperature, their highest thermal conductance can be comparable with that of graphene, while the lowest thermal conductance is less than half of graphene's. The three boron sheets exhibit different anisot…
By using first-principles calculations, we investigated the effects of graphene/boron nitride (BN) encapsulation, surface functionalization by metallic elements (K, Al, Mg and typical transition metals) and molecules (tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and tetracyanoethylene (TCNE)) on the electronic properties of layered indium selenide (InSe). It was found that an opposite trend of charge transfer is possible for graphene (donor) and BN (acceptor), which is dramatically different from phosphorene where both graphene and BN play the same role (donor). For InSe/BN heterostructure, a change of the…
We investigate the adsorption of the nucleic acid bases, adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), thymine (T) and uracil (U) on the outer wall of a high curvature semiconducting single-walled boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) by first principles density functional theory calculations. The calculated binding energy shows the order: G>A\approxC\approxT\approxU implying that the interaction strength of the (high-curvature) BNNT with the nucleobases, G being an exception, is nearly the same. A higher binding energy for the G-BNNT conjugate appears to result from a stronger hybridization of the molecula…
We investigate the integration of Al2O3 high-k dielectric on two-dimensional (2D) crystals of boron nitride (BN) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) by atomic layer deposition (ALD). We demonstrate the feasibility of direct ALD growth with trimethylaluminum(TMA) and water as precursors on both 2D crystals. Through theoretical and experimental studies, we found that the initial ALD cycles play the critical role, during which physical adsorption dominates precursor adsorption at the semiconductor surface. We model the initial ALD growth stages at the 2D surface by analyzing Lennard-Jones Potentials,…
We carried out first-principles calculations within Density Functional Theory to investigate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of boron-nitride (BN) honeycomb structure functionalized by adatom adsorption, as well as by the substitution of foreign atoms for B and N atoms. For periodic high density coverage, most of $3d$ transition metal atoms and some of group 3A, 4A, and 6A elements are adsorbed with significant binding energy and modify the electronic structure of bare BN monolayer. While bare BN monolayer is nonmagnetic, wide band gap semiconductor, at high coverage of spec…
