In this work we report results of step-by-step modeling of the oxidation of free-standing boron monolayers of different types. Results of the calculations demonstrate that the process of the oxidation is always exothermic and lead toward the formation of foam-like boron oxide films with incorporated non-oxidized small boron clusters. Some of these boron-oxide films demonstrate the presence of chemically stable magnetic centers. Evaluation of the physical properties of oxidized boprophene sheets (OBS) demonstrate it possible application in solar energy, as sensors and coating against leakage of hydrogen.
Two-dimensional boron monolayer (borophene) stands out from the two-dimensional atomic layered materials due to its structural flexibility, tunable electronic and mechanical properties from a large number of allotropic materials. The stability of pristine borophene polymorphs could possibly be improved via hydrogenation with atomic hydrogen (referred to as borophane). However, the precise adsorption structures and the underlying mechanism are still elusive. Employing first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the optimal configurations of freestanding borophanes and the ones grown on metall…
Large-area single-crystal surface structures were successfully prepared on Cu(111) substrate with boron deposition, which is critical for prospective applications. However, the proposed borophene structures do not match the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results very well, while the proposed copper boride is at odds with the traditional knowledge that ordered copper-rich borides normally do not exist due to small difference in electronegativity and large difference in atomic size. To clarify the controversy and elucidate the formation mechanism of the unexpected copper boride, we conducte…
In this work, we foresee the structure of a new class of borophenes with smaller 2D densities of atoms than those explored so far for 2D boron crystals. Boron atoms in the porous borophenes tend to be $5$-coordinated in contrast to commonly investigated structures with hexagonal holes for which the number of nearest neighbors of each atom varies from $3$ to $6$. High metallic character is the usual feature of borophenes, however, we have also identified a semimetallic borophene that turns into semiconductor upon unit cell expansion. A $10\%$ increase in lattice constant of this structure gives…
We present the successful synthesis of single-atom-thick borophene nanoribbons (BNRs) by self-assembly of boron on Ag(110) surface. The scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies reveal high quality BNRs: all the ribbons are along the [-110] direction of Ag(110), and can run across the steps on the surface. The width of ribbons is distributed in a narrow range around 10.3 nm. High resolution STM images revealed four ordered surface structures in BNRs. Combined with DFT calculations, we found that all the four structures of boron nanoribbons consist of the boron chains with different width, se…
Superconductivity in two-dimensional compounds is widely concerned, not only due to its application in constructing nano-superconducting devices, but also for the general scientific interests. Very recently, borophene (two-dimensional boron sheet) has been successfully grown on the Ag(111) surface, through direct evaporation of a pure boron source. The experiment unveiled two types of borophene structures, namely $β_{12}$ and $χ_3$. Herein, we employed density-functional first-principles calculations to investigate the electron-phonon coupling and superconductivity in both structures of boroph…
Two-dimensional systems have strengthened their position as one of the key materials for novel applications. Very recently, boron joined the distinguished group of elements that are confirmed to possess 2D allotropes, named borophenes. In this work, we explore the stability and hardness of the highest boride of tungsten, which is regarded as built of borophenes separated by metal atoms. We show that WB$_{3+x}$ has Vickers hardnesses approaching 40 GPa only for small values of $x$. The insertion of extra boron atoms is, in general, detrimental for WB$_{3}$ in terms of hardness since leads to th…
Very recently, two-dimensional(2D) boron sheets (borophene) with rectangular structure has been grown successfully on single crystal Ag(111) substrates. The fabricated boroprene is predicted to have unusual mechanical properties. We performed first-principle calculations to investigate the mechanical properties of the monolayer borophene, including ideal tensile strength and critical strain. It was found that monolayer borophene can withstand stress up to 20.26 N/m and 12.98 N/m in a and b directions, respectively. However, its critical strain was found to be small. In a direction, the critical …
The recent discovery of borophene, a two-dimensional allotrope of boron, raises many questions about its structure and its chemical and physical properties. Boron has a high chemical affinity to oxygen but little is known about the oxidation behavior of borophene. Here we use first principles calculations to study the phase diagram of free-standing, two-dimensional $\mathrm{B_{1-x}O_x}$ for compositions ranging from $x=0$ to $x=0.6$, which correspond to borophene and $\mathrm{B_2O_3}$ sheets, respectively. Our results indicate that no stable compounds except borophene and $\mathrm{B_2O_3}$ she…
Two-dimensional boron sheets (borophenes) have been successfully synthesized in experiments and are expected to exhibit intriguing transport properties such as the emergence of superconductivity and Dirac Fermions. However, quantitative understanding of intrinsic electrical transport of borophene has not been achieved. Here, we report a comprehensive first-principles study on electron-phonon driven intrinsic electrical resistivity (\r{ho}) of emerging borophene structures. We find that the resistivity is highly dependent on the atomic structures and electron density of borophene. Low-temperatu…
By way of the nonequilibrium Green's function simulations and first principles calculations, we report that borophene, a single layer of boron atoms that was fabricated recently, possesses an extraordinarily high lattice thermal conductance in the ballistic transport regime, which even exceeds graphene. In addition to the obvious reasons of light mass and strong bonding of boron atoms, the superior thermal conductance is mainly rooted in its strong structural anisotropy and unusual phonon transmission. For low-frequency phonons, the phonon transmission within borophene is nearly isotropic, sim…
We systematically investigated electronic evolutions of non-symmorphic borophene with chemical environments that were realized by the ion exchange method. Electronic structures can be characterized by the topological $Z_2$ invariant. Spectroscopic experiments and DFT calculations unveiled that a sheet of hydrogenated borophene (borophane) is the Dirac nodal loop semimetal ($Z_2=-1$), while a layered crystal of YCrB$_4$ is an insulator ($Z_2=1$). The results demonstrate the electronic topological transition by replacement of the counter atoms on the non-symmorphic borophene layer.
We study the mechanical properties of two-dimensional (2D) boron, borophenes, by first-principles calculations. The recently synthesized borophene with 1/6 concentration of hollow hexagons (HH) is shown to have in-plane modulus C up to 210 N/m and bending stiffness as low as D = 0.39 eV. Thus, its Foppl-von Karman number per unit area, defined as C/D, reaches 568 nm-2, over twofold higher than graphene's value, establishing the borophene as one of the most flexible materials. Yet, the borophene has a specific modulus of 346 m2/s2 and ideal strengths of 16 N/m, rivaling those (453 m2/s2 and 34 …
Two-dimensional boron (borophene) is featured by its structural polymorphs and distinct in-plane anisotropy, opening opportunities to achieve tailored electronic properties by intermixing different phases. Here, using scanning tunneling spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations, delocalized one-dimensional nearly free electron states (NFE) in the (2,3) or \b{eta}12 borophene sheet on the Ag(111) surface were observed. The NFE states emerge from a line defect in the borophene, manifested as a structural unit of the (2,2) or \c{hi}3 sheet, which creates an in-plane potential well …
The most recent experimental advances could provide ways for the fabrication of several atomic thick and planar forms of boron atoms. For the first time, we explore the mechanical properties of five types of boron films with various vacancy ratios ranging from 0.1 to 0.15, using molecular dynamics simulations with ReaxFF force field. It is found that the Young's modulus and tensile strength decrease with increasing the temperature. We found that boron sheets exhibit an anisotropic mechanical response due to the different arrangement of atoms along the armchair and zigzag directions. At room te…
Borophene (two-dimensional boron sheet) is a new type of two-dimensional material, which was recently grown successfully on single crystal Ag substrates. In this paper, we investigate the electronic structure and bonding characteristics of borophene by first-principle calculations. The band structure of borophene shows highly anisotropic metallic behaviour. The obtained optical properties of borophene exhibit strong anisotropy as well. The combination of high optical transparency and high electrical conductivity in borophene makes it a promising candidate for future design of transparent condu…
Borophene, a monoatomic layer of boron atoms, stands out among two-dimensional (2D) materials, with its versatile properties of polymorphism, metallicity, plasmonics, superconductivity, tantalizing for physics exploration and next-generation devices. Yet its phases are all synthesized on and stay bound to metal substrates, hampering both characterization and use. The growth on the inert insulator would allow post-synthesis exfoliation of borophene, but its weak adhesion to such substrate results in a very high 2D-nucleation barrier preventing clean borophene growth. This challenge can be circu…
The effect of external static charging on borophenes - 2D boron crystals - is investigated by using first principles calculations. The influence of the excess negative charge on the stability of the 2D structures is examined using a very simple analysis of decomposition of the binding energy of a given boron layer into contributions coming from boron atoms that have different coordination numbers. This analysis is important to understand how the local neighbourhood of an atom influences the overall stability of the monolayer structure. The decomposition is done for the $α$-sheet and its relate…
Recent experimental advances for the fabrication of various borophene sheets introduced new structures with a wide prospect of applications. Borophene is the boron atoms analogue of graphene. Borophene exhibits various structural polymorphs all of which are metallic. In this work, we employed first-principles density functional theory calculations to investigate the mechanical properties of five different single-layer borophene sheets. In particular, we analyzed the effect of loading direction and point vacancy on the mechanical response of borophene. Moreover, we compared the thermal stabilit…
Honeycomb structures of group IV elements can host massless Dirac fermions with non-trivial Berry phases. Their potential for electronic applications has attracted great interest and spurred a broad search for new Dirac materials especially in monolayer structures. We present a detailed investigation of the β12 boron sheet, which is a borophene structure that can form spontaneously on a Ag(111) surface. Our tight-binding analysis revealed that the lattice of the β12-sheet could be decomposed into two triangular sublattices in a way similar to that for a honeycomb lattice, thereby hosting Dirac…
Motivated by recent experimental and theoretical research on a monolayer of Boron atoms, Borophene, current-voltage characteristics of three different Borophene sheets, 2Pmmn, 8Pmmn and 8Pmmm, are calculated using density functional theory combined with nonequilibriumGreen function formalism. Borophene sheets with two and eight atoms in a unit cell are considered and bandstructure, electron density and structural anisotropy of them are analyzed in details. Results show that 8Pmmn and 8Pmmm structures which have eight atoms in the unit cell have less anisotropy than 2Pmmn. In addition, although…
In recent years, two-dimensional boron sheets (borophene) have been experimentally synthesized and theoretically observed as promising conductor or transistor with novel thermal and electronic properties. We first give a general survey of some notable electronic properties of borophene, including the superconductivity and topological characters. We then mainly review the basic approaches, thermal transport, as well as the mechanical properties of borophene with different configurations. This review gives a general understanding of some of the crucial thermal transport and electronic properties…
Charge transfer from a metal substrate stabilizes honeycomb borophene, whose electron deficit would otherwise spoil the hexagonal order of a $π$-bonded 2D atomic network. However, the coupling between the substrate and the boron overlayer may result in the formation of strong chemical bonds that would compromise the electronic properties of the overlayer. In this paper we present a theoretical study, based on state-of-the-art density-functional and genetic-optimization techniques, of the electronic and structural properties of borophene grown on Al(111), with emphasis on the impact of oxygen o…
Since two-dimensional boron sheet (borophene) synthesized on Ag substrates in 2015, research on borophene has grown fast in the fields of condensed matter physics, chemistry, material science, and nanotechnology. Due to the unique physical and chemical properties, borophene has various potential applications. In this review, we summarize the progress on borophene with a particular emphasis on the recent advances. First, we introduce the phases of borophene by experimental synthesis and theoretical predictions. Then, the physical and chemical properties, such as mechanical, thermal, electronic,…
The electronic and the structural properties of two dimensional van der Waals metal/semiconductor heterostructures have been investigated through first-principles calculations. We have considered the recently synthesized borophene [Science {\bf 350}, 1513 (2015)], and the planar boron sheets (S1 and S2) [Nature Chemistry {\bf 8}, 563 (2016)] as the 2D metal layer, and the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) \mose, and \wse\ as the semiconductor monolayer. We find that the energetic stability of those 2D metal/semiconductor heterojunctions is mostly ruled by the vdW interactions; however, …
We study the effect of electron doping on the bonding character and stability of two-dimensional (2D) structures of elemental boron, called borophene, which is known to form many stable allotropes. Our {\em ab initio} calculations for the neutral system reveal previously unknown stable 2D $ε$-B and $ω$-B structures. We find that the chemical bonding characteristic in this and other boron structures is strongly affected by extra charge. Beyond a critical degree of electron doping, the most stable allotrope changes from $ε$-B to a buckled honeycomb structure. Additional electron doping, mimickin…
We report a previously unknown monolayer borophene allotrope and we call it super-B with a flat structure based on the ab initio calculations. It has good thermal, dynamical, and mechanical stability compared with many other typical borophenes. We find that super-B has a fascinating chemical bond environment consisting of standard sp, sp2 hybridizations, and delocalized five-center three-electron $π$ bond, called $π$(5c-3e). This particular electronic structure plays a pivotal role in stabilizing the super-B chemically. By extra doping, super-B can be transformed into a Dirac material from pri…
Recent synthesis of monolayer borophene (triangle boron monolayer) on the substrate opens the era of boron nanosheet (Science, 350, 1513, $\mathbf{2015}$), but the structural stability and novel physical properties are still open issues. Here we demonstrated borophene can be stabilized with fully surface hydrogenation, called as borophane, from first-principles calculations. Most interesting, it shows that borophane has direction-dependent Dirac cones, which are mainly contributed by in-plane \emph{p$_{x}$} and \emph{p$_{y}$} orbitals of boron atoms. The Dirac fermions possess an ultrahigh Fer…
The preferred location of boron and phosphorus in oxidized free-standing Si nanoparticles was investigated using a first-principles density functional approach. The calculated formation energies indicate that P should segregate to the silicon core, whereas B is equally stable in the Si and SiO_2 regions. Our models thus suggest that, in contrast with nanocrystals with H-terminated surfaces, the efficiency of phosphorus incorporation in oxidized Si nanoparticles can be improved by thermal annealing.
Investigation on oxidation resistance of two-dimensional (2D) materials is critical for many of their applications, because 2D materials could have higher oxidation kinetics than their bulk counterparts due to predominant surface atoms and structural distortions. In this study, the oxidation behavior of high-quality boron nitride (BN) nanosheets of 1-4 layer thick has been examined by heating in air. Atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy analyses reveal that monolayer BN nanosheets can sustain up to 850 °C and the starting temperature of oxygen doping/oxidation of BN nanosheets only s…
Low-symmetry 2D materials---such as ReS$_2$ and ReSe$_2$ monolayers, black phosphorus monolayers, group-IV monochalcogenide monolayers, borophene, among others---have more complex atomistic structures than the honeycomb lattices of graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, and transition metal dichalcogenides. The reduced symmetries of these emerging materials give rise to inhomogeneous electron, optical, valley, and spin responses, as well as entirely new properties such as ferroelasticity, ferroelectricity, magnetism, spin-wave phenomena, large nonlinear optical properties, photogalvanic effects, a…
