We study polylithiated molecules as building blocks for hydrogen storage materials, using first-principles calculations. $\clifour$ and $\olitwo$ bind 12 and 10 hydrogen molecules, respectively, with an average binding energy of 0.10 and 0.13 eV, leading to gravimetric densities of 37.8 and 40.3 weight % H. Bonding between Li and C or O is strongly polar and $\hyd$ molecules attach to the partially charged Li atoms without dissociating, which is favorable for (de)hydrogenation kinetics. CLi$_n$ and OLi$_m$ molecules can be chemically bonded to graphene sheets to hinder the aggregation of such molecules. In particular B or Be doped graphene strongly bind the molecules without seriously affecting the hydrogen binding energy. It still leads to a hydrogen storage capacity in the range 5-8.5 wt % H.
Hydrogen storage capacity, stability, bonding mechanism and the electronic structure of polylithiated molecules (OLi2) functionalized graphane (CH) has been studied by means of first principle density functional theory (DFT). Molecular dynamics (MD) have confirmed the stability, while Bader charge analysis describe the bonding mechanism of OLi2 with CH. The binding energy of OLi2 on CH sheet has been found to be large enough to ensure its uniform distribution without any clustering. It has been found that each OLi2 unit can adsorb up to six H2 molecules resulting into a storage capacity of 12.…
We report a first-principles study of hydrogen storage media consisting of calcium atoms and graphene-based nanostructures. We find that Ca atoms prefer to be individually adsorbed on the zigzag edge of graphene with a Ca-Ca distance of 10 A without clustering of the Ca atoms, and up to six H2 molecules can bind to a Ca atom with a binding energy of ~0.2 eV/H2. A Ca-decorated zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) can reach the gravimetric capacity of ~5 wt % hydrogen. We also consider various edge geometries of the graphene for Ca dispersion.
The recent progress in the field of hydrogen storage in carbon and boron nitride nanostructures has been summarized. Carbon and boron nitride nanostructures are considered advantageous in this prospect due to their lightweight and high surface area. Demerits of pristine structures to hold hydrogen molecules for mobile applications have been highlighted by many researchers. In such cases, weak van der Waals interaction comes into account, hence, the hydrogen molecules are weakly bonded with the host materials and hence weak adsorption energy and low hydrogen molecules uptake. So, to tune the ad…
Using the pseudopotential density functional method, we find that a Be atom on a nanostructure with H2 molecules forms a Be-dihydrogen complex through the hybridization of the Be s or p orbits with the H2 sigma orbits and the binding energy of the H2 molecules is in the range of ~0.3 - 0.8 eV/H2. We also study Be-dihydrogen complexes on various nanostructures and demonstrate the feasibility of the application of the complexes to a hydrogen storage medium that operates near room temperature and ambient pressure.

We report the electrochemical performance of nanostructures of Na$_{0.66}$V$_4$O$_{10}$ as cathode material for rechargeable batteries. The Rietveld refinement of room temperature x-ray diffraction pattern shows the monoclinic phase with C2/m space group. The cyclic voltammetry curves of prepared half-cells exhibit redox peaks at ~3.1 and 2.6~V, which are due to two-phase transition reaction between V$^{5+/4+}$ and can be assigned to the single step deintercalation/intercalation of Na-ion. We observe a good cycling stability with specific discharge capacity (measured vs. Na$^+$/Na) between 80 …

We have found that a beryllium (Be) atom on nanostructured materials with H2 molecules generates a Kubas-like dihydrogen complex [H. Lee et al. arXiv:1002.2247v1 (2010)]. Here, we investigate the feasibility of Be-decorated fullerenes for hydrogen storage using ab initio calculations. We find that the aggregation of Be atoms on pristine fullerenes is energetically preferred, resulting in the dissociation of the dihydrogen. In contrast, for boron (B)-doped fullerenes, Be atoms prefer to be individually attached to B sites of the fullerenes, and a maximum of one H2 molecule binds to each Be atom…
Methane, the primary constituent of natural gas, binds too weakly to nanostructured carbons to meet the targets set for on-board vehicular storage to be viable. We show, using density functional theory calculations, that replacing graphene by graphene oxide increases the adsorption energy of methane by 50%. This enhancement is sufficient to achieve the optimal binding strength. In order to gain insight into the sources of this increased binding, that could also be used to formulate design principles for novel storage materials, we consider a sequence of model systems, that progressively take u…
We report the synthesis, physical properties and electrochemical performance of Zn substituted Na$_{0.44}$Mn$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$O$_2$ ($x=$ 0 -- 0.02) nanostructures as cathode in Na-ion batteries for energy storage applications. These samples stabilize in the orthorhombic structure and the morphology is found to be slab like with 100 -- 200~nm width and few micrometer of length. The resistivity measurements show highly insulating nature for all the samples, where the activation energy decreases with increasing Zn concentration indicating more defect levels in the band gap. The cyclic voltammogram (…
Sorbent materials are a promising alternative to advance hydrogen storage technologies. The general disadvantage is the relatively weak solid-gas interaction and adsorption energy, providing low gravimetric and volumetric capacities and extreme operational conditions. Here we propose Au-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as an efficient alternative for reversible hydrogen capture at high temperatures. This work investigates the properties of several modified CNTs using density functional theory. We analyze the binding and formation energies of the uniformed Au-doped CNTs and assess their adsorption…

We show that an Néel-type skyrmion confined within a nanodot placed on top of a fe…
Hybrid 2D-2D materials composed by perpendicularly oriented covalent organic framework (COFs) and graphene were prepared and tested for energy storage applications. Diboronic acid molecules covalently attached to graphene oxide (GO) were used as nucleation sites for directing vertical growth of COF-1 nanosheets (v-COF-GO). The hybrid material shows forest of COF-1 nanosheets with thickness of ~3 to 15 nm in edge-on orientation relative to GO. The same reaction performed in absence of molecular pillars resulted in uncontrollable growth of thick COF-1 platelets parallel to the surface of GO. The…

Using the pseudopotential density functional method as well as equilibrium thermodynamic functions, we explore the process of releasing H2 molecules adsorbed on a transition metal atom caused by the hydrogen-ammonia partial pressure difference. The H2 molecules bind to a transition metal atom at H2 pressure-NH3 pressure-temperature 50 atm-10-9 atm-25 °C, and they are released at 3 atm-10-6 atm-25 °C. This process involves the same mechanism responsible for carbon monoxide poisoning of hemoglobin with the O2-CO partial pressure difference. We show that our findings can be applicable to an appro…
Downsizing well-established materials to the nanoscale is a key route to novel functionalities, in particular if different functionalities are merged in hybrid nanomaterials. Today's supercapacitor energy storages are typically discrete devices aimed for printed boards and power applications. The development of autonomous sensor networks and wearable electronics and the miniaturisation of mobile devices would benefit substantially from solutions in which the energy storage is integrated with the active device. Nanostructures based on porous silicon (PS) provide a route towards integration due to the very high inherent surface area to volume ratio and compatibility with microelectronics fabrication processes. Unfortunately, pristine PS has limited wettability and po…
We investigate the binding of single and quadruple hydrogen molecules on a positively charged Ca ion. By comparing with benchmark quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations we demonstrate wide variability in other more approximate electronic structure methods including common density functionals. Single determinant QMC calculations find no binding at short range by approximately 0.1 eV for the quadruple hydrogen molecule case, for a fixed hydrogen bond length of 0.77 Angstrom. Density functional calculations using common functionals such a LDA and B3LYP differ substantially from the QMC binding cu…
