Downsizing well-established materials to the nanoscale is a key route to novel functionalities, in particular if different functionalities are merged in hybrid nanomaterials. Hybrid carbon-based hierarchical nanostructures are particularly promising for electrochemical energy storage since they combine benefits of nanosize effects, enhanced electrical conductivity and integrity of bulk materials. We show that endohedral multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) encapsulating high-capacity (here: conversion and alloying) electrode materials have a high potential for use in anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIB). There are two essential characteristics of filled CNT relevant for application in electrochemical energy storage: (1) rigid hollow cavities of the CNT provide upper limits for nanoparticles in their inner cavities which are both separated from the fillings of other CNT and protected against degradation. In particular, the CNT shells resist strong volume changes of encapsulates in response to electrochemical cycling, which in conventional conversion and alloying materials hinders application in energy storage devices. (2) Carbon mantles ensure electrical contact to the active material as they are unaffected by potential cracks of the encapsulate and form a stable conductive network in the electrode compound. Our studies confirm that encapsulates are electrochemically active and can achieve full theoretical reversible capacity. The results imply that encapsulating nanostructures inside CNT can provide a route to new high-performance nanocomposite anode materials for LIB.
Sodium ion batteries become popular due to their low cost. Among possible anode materials of sodium ion batteries, phosphorus has great potential owing to its high theoretical capacity. Previous research that yielded high capacity and long duration of phosphorus anode used expensive materials such as black phosphorus (BP) and phosphorene. To take advantage of the low cost of sodium ion batteries, we report a simple and low-cost method to fabricate anode: condensing red phosphorus on carbon xerogel. Even with large particle size (~ 50 $μ$m) and high mass loading (2 mg cm$^{-2}$), the composite …
Recently "carbon ene-yne" (CEY), a novel full carbon two-dimensional (2D) material was successfully synthesized by the solvent-phase reaction. Motivated by this experimental effort, we conducted extensive first-principles density functional theory simulations to explore the application prospects of CEY as an anode material for Mg, Na and Li-ion batteries. To simulate the ionic intercalation process in an anode electrode, the adatoms coverage was gradually increased. We then employed Bader charge analysis to evaluate the charge transfer between the adatoms and the CEY nanosheet and finally to r…
A model is presented for predicting the open-circuit voltage (OCV) and lithium distribution within lithium-ion anodes containing multiple materials, coupling linear elasticity with a stress-dependent chemical potential. The model is applied to a spherical radially-symmetric nano-particle with a silicon core and a graphite shell, highlighting the large effect on lithium distribution and OCV caused by the stress-coupling. Various performance measures based on the expanded volume, the amount of lithium intercalated and the maximum stress induced, are calculated for a silicon core with a graphite …
Employing two-dimensional (2D) materials as anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is believed to be an effective approach to meet the growing demands of high-capacity next-generation LIBs. In this work, the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to evaluate the potential application of two-dimensional phosphorus carbide (2D PCx, x=2, 5, and 6) monolayers as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The 2D PCx systems are predicted to show outstanding structural stability and electronic properties. From the nudge elastic band calculations, the Li atoms sho…
The development of silicon anodes to replace conventional graphite in efforts to increase energy densities of lithium-ion batteries has been largely impeded by poor interfacial stability against liquid electrolytes. Here, stable operation of 99.9 weight% micro-Si (uSi) anode is enabled by utilizing the interface passivating properties of sulfide based solid-electrolytes. Bulk to surface characterization, as well as quantification of interfacial components showed that such an approach eliminates continuous interfacial growth and irreversible lithium losses. In uSi || layered-oxide full cells, h…
Lithium metal cells are key towards achieving high specific energy and energy density for electrification of transportation and aviation. Anode-free cells are the limiting case of lithium metal cells involving no excess lithium and the highest possible specific energy. In addition, anode-free cells are easier, cheaper and safer as they avoid handling and manufacturing of lithium metal foils. Issues related to dendrite growth and poor cycling are magnified in anode-free cells due to lack of excess lithium. Electrolyte and current collector surface play a crucial role in affecting the cycling pe…
Despite recent significant developments of Si composites, use of silicon with significance in the anodes for Li-ion batteries is still limited. In fact, nominal energy density is to be saturated around ~750 Wh/L regardless of cell-types under the current material strategies. Use of Si-rich anode can push the limit; however, the prolonged irreversible Li consumption becomes more prominent. We previously showed that repeating c-Li3.75(+δ)Si formation/decomposition, typically recognized to degrade the anodes, can improve the irreversibility and accumulatively minimize the gross consumption. Utili…

All-solid-state batteries are expected to enable batteries with high energy density with the use of lithium metal anodes. Although solid electrolytes are believed to be mechanically strong enough to prevent lithium dendrites from propagating, various reports today still show cell failure due to lithium dendritic growth at room temperature. While cell parameters such as current density, electrolyte porosity and interfacial properties have been investigated, mechanical properties of lithium metal and the role of applied stack pressure on the shorting behavior is still poorly understood. Here, we…
A porous electrode resulting from unregulated Li growth is the major cause of the low Coulombic efficiency and potential safety hazards of rechargeable Li metal batteries. Strategies aiming to achieve large granular Li deposits have been extensively explored; yet, the ideal Li deposits, which consist of large Li particles that are seamlessly packed on the electrode and can be reversibly deposited and stripped, have never been achieved. Here, by controlling the uniaxial stack pressure during battery operation, a dense Li deposition (99.49% electrode density) with an ideal columnar structure has…
Inspired by a recent experimental and theoretical study [Yang et al., 2017], wherein protrusions in graphene have been proposed as an effective strategy to enhance the performance of sodium ion batteries, a comprehensive study of the effects of phosphorus doping in graphene on adsorption and diffusion behaviour of Li is carried out by using density functional theory. We find that protrusion introduced by P-dopant in graphene enhances the adsorption of a single Li atom onto the anode due to an additional partial covalent bonding character between Li and carbon atoms of the substrate. However, w…
Two dimensional materials as electrodes have shown unique advantages such as the infinite planar lengths, broad electrochemical window, and much exposed active sites. In this work, by means of density functional theory computations, we demonstrate that two dimensional PS2 with the 1T-Type structure as many two dimensional disulfides is a promising anode material for sodium ion batteries application. Different from many two dimensional disulfides (e.g. MoS2, TiS2, CrS2) compounds that are semiconducting, PS2 monolayer exhibits metallic character with considerable electronic states at the Fermi …
We propose fabrication of the fiber-shaped lithium ion batteries assembled by twisting a cathode filament together with an anode filament. The cathode filament is fabricated by depositing a LiFePO4 (LFP)-composite layer onto a steel-filled polyester conductive thread (SPCT). As anode filaments, we propose several scenarios including a Li4Ti5O12 (LTO)-composite coated SPCT (dip-and-dry deposition), a tin-coated SPCT (PVD deposition) as well as a bare tin wire. An electrolyte composite layer consisting of LiPF6 and polyethylene oxide (PEO) is then deposited onto both the anode and cathode filame…
The performance of lithium and sodium ion batteries relies notably on the accessibility to carbon electrodes of controllable porous structure and chemical composition. This work reports a facile synthesis of well-defined porous N-doped carbons (NPCs) using a poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) as precursor, and graphene oxide (GO)-stabilized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanoparticles as sacrificial template. The GO-stabilized PMMA nanoparticles were first prepared and then decorated by a thin PIL coating before carbonization. The resulting NPCs reached a satisfactory specific surface area of up to 56…
We report the electrochemical investigation of 5% Al doped MoS$_2$@rGO composite as a high-performance anode for sodium (Na)-ion batteries. The x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy characterizations reveal that the Al doping increase the interlayer spacing of (002) plane of MoS$_2$ nanosheets and form a stable 1T phase. The galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements show the specific capacity stable around 450, 400, 350, 300 and 200 mAhg$^{-1}$ at current densities of 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 1~Ag$^{-1}$, respectively. Also, we observ…
Zn metal battery has been considered a promising alternative energy storage technology in renewable energy storage and grid storage. It is well-known that the surface orientation of a Zn metal anode is vital to the reversibility of a Zn metal battery. Herein, the (101)-oriented thin Zn metal anode (down to 2 μm) is electrodeposited on a Cu surface by adding dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) electrolyte additive in ZnSO4 aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation indicates the formation of flat terrace-like compact (101)-oriented surfaces. Insitu optical observation confirms that …
A thick electrode with high areal capacity has been developed as a strategy for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries, but thick electrodes have difficulties in manufacturing and limitations in ion transport. Here, we reported a new manufacturing approach for ultra-thick electrode with aligned structure, called structure electrode additive manufacturing or SEAM, which aligns active materials to the through-thicknesses direction of electrodes using shear flow and a designed printing path. The ultra-thick electrodes with high loading of active materials, low tortuous structure, and good stru…
We study Na ion diffusion and electrochemical performance of NaVO$_3$ (NVO) as anode material in Li/Na--ion batteries with the specific capacity of $\approx$350 mAhg$^{-1}$ at the current density 11~mAg$^{-1}$ after 300 cycles. Remarkably, the capacity retains $\ge$200~mAhg$^{-1}$ even after 400~cycles at 44~mAg$^{-1}$ with Coulombic efficiency $>$99\%. The deduced diffusion coefficient from galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements for NVO as anode in Li--ion battery is in the range of 10$^{-10}…

Controlling nanostructure from molecular, crystal lattice to the electrode level remains as arts in practice, where nucleation and growth of the crystals still require more fundamental understanding and precise control to shape the microstructure of metal deposits and their properties. This is vital to achieve dendrite-free Li metal anodes with high electrochemical reversibility for practical high-energy rechargeable Li batteries. Here, cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy was used to capture the dynamic growth and atomic structure of Li metal deposits at the early nucleation stage, in w…
Lithium-metal batteries employing concentrated glyme-based electrolytes and different cathode chemistries are herein evaluated in view of a safe use of the highly energetic alkali-metal anode. Indeed, diethylene-glycol dimethyl-ether (DEGDME) and triethylene-glycol dimethyl-ether (TREGDME) dissolving lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and lithium nitrate (LiNO3) in concentration approaching the solvents saturation limit are used in lithium batteries employing either a conversion sulfur-tin composite (S:Sn 80:20 w/w) or a Li+ (de-)insertion LiFePO4 cathode. Cyclic voltammetry (…
Most recent exciting experimental advances introduced buckled and flat borophene nanomembranes as new members to the advancing family of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Borophene, is the boron atom analogue of graphene with interesting properties suitable for a wide variety of applications. In this investigation, we conducted extensive first-principles density functional theory simulations to explore the application of four different flat borophene films as anode materials for Al, Mg, Na or Li-ion batteries. In our modelling, first the strongest binding sites were predicted and next we gradual…
The path toward Li-ion batteries with higher energy-densities will likely involve use of thin lithium metal (Li) anode (<50 $μ$m in thickness), whose cyclability today remains limited by dendrite formation and low Coulombic efficiency. Previous studies have shown that the solid-electrolyte-interface (SEI) of Li metal plays a crucial role in Li electrodeposition and stripping. However, design rules for optimal SEIs on lithium metal are not well-established. Here, using integrated experimental and modeling studies on a series of structurally-similar SEI-modifying compounds as model systems, we r…
The large volume change of the silicon (Si) during lithiation and delithiation process has long been a problem impeding its application as one of the most promising anode materials for LIBs. In this paper, we proposed a conceptually new idea to address this problem simply by varying the thickness of the electrode material film. The resulting thickness-gradient electrode exhibits considerable enhancement in the electrochemical performances including capacity, capacity retention, Coulombic efficiency, and rate capability in comparison to the traditional counterparts with uniform thickness. Such …
High-performance anodes for rechargeable Li-ion battery are produced by nanostructuring of the transition metal oxides on a conductive support. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid material of MnO2 directly grown onto fabrics of carbon nanotube fibres, which exhibits notable specific capacity over 1100 and 500 mAh/g at a discharge current density of 25 mA/g and 5 A/g, respectively, with coulombic efficiency of 97.5 %. Combined with 97 % capacity retention after 1500 cycles at a current density of 5 A/g, both capacity and stability are significantly above literature data. Detailed investigations invol…

We describe the evolution of a phase field, the lithium-ion concentration, and an electric potential, during a battery charge cycle, solving equations using time-marching algorithms with automatic time-step adjustment and implemented on an open-source finite element library. A modified lithium crystal surface anisotropy representation for phase-field electrodeposition model is proposed and evaluated through different numerical tests, exhibi…
We demonstrate that photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) can be a potential novel imaging tool to investigate the Li metal dendrite growth, a critical issue leading to short circuit and even explosion of Li metal batteries. Our results suggest several advantages of PAM imaging of Li metal batteries: high resolution (micrometers), 3D imaging capability, deep penetration in a separator, and high contrast from bulk Li metal. Further, PAM has potential for in situ real-time imaging of Li metal batteries.
Since the first report of graphdiyne nanomembranes synthesis in 2010, different novel graphdiyne nanosheets have been fabricated. In a latest experimental advance, triphenylene-graphdiyne (TpG), a novel two-dimensional (2D) material was fabricated using the liquid/liquid interfacial method. In this study, we employed extensive first-principles simulations to investigate the mechanical/failure, thermal stability, electronic and optical properties of single-layer TpG. In addition, we predicted and explored the properties of nitrogenated-, phosphorated- and arsenicated-TpG monolayers. Our results…
We present a porous electrode model for lithium-ion batteries using Butler--Volmer reaction kinetics. We model lithium concentration in both the solid and fluid phase along with solid and liquid electric potential. Through asymptotic reduction, we show that the electric potentials are spatially homogeneous which decouples the problem into a series of time-dependent problems. These problems can be solved on three distinguished time scales, an early time scale where capacitance effects in the electrode dominate, a mid-range time scale where a spatial concentration gradient forms in the electroly…
Dendrite free electrodeposition of lithium metal is necessary for the adoption of high energy density rechargeable lithium metal batteries. Here, we demonstrate a new mechanism of using a liquid crystalline electrolyte to suppress dendrite growth with a lithium metal anode. A nematic liquid crystalline electrolyte modifies the kinetics of electrodeposition by introducing additional overpotential due to its bulk distortion and anchoring free energy. By extending the phase-field model, we simulate the morphological evolution of the metal anode and explore the role of bulk distortion and anchorin…
To develop a high-density and long-life lithium-ion battery, a technology is needed that allows non-destructive visualization of the spatial distribution of deteriorated parts after cycle test. In the present study, we measured the distribution of the magnetic field leaking from the lithium-ion battery during its operation. Based on the measurement results, we evaluated the current density distribution inside a battery using the electric current reconstruction process. With respect to the changes in an internal state of the lithium-ion battery associated with cycle deterioration, we successful…
This paper presents the current state of mathematical modelling of the electrochemical behaviour of lithium-ion batteries as they are charged and discharged. It reviews the models developed by Newman and co-workers, both in the cases of dilute and moderately-concentrated electrolytes and indicates the modelling assumptions required for their development. Particular attention is paid to the interface conditions imposed between the electrolyte and the active electrode material; necessary conditions are derived for one of these, the Butler-Volmer relation, in order to ensure physically realistic …
The pseudo-two-dimensional (P2D) model is a complex mathematical model that can capture the electrochemical processes in Li-ion batteries. However, the model also brings a heavy computational burden. Many simplifications to the model have been introduced in the literature to reduce the complexity. We present a method for fast computation of the P2D model which can be used when simplifications are not accurate enough. By rearranging the calculations, we reduce the complexity of the linear algebra problem. We also employ automatic differentiation, using an open source package JAX for robustness,…
