We study Na ion diffusion and electrochemical performance of NaVO$_3$ (NVO) as anode material in Li/Na--ion batteries with the specific capacity of $\approx$350 mAhg$^{-1}$ at the current density 11~mAg$^{-1}$ after 300 cycles. Remarkably, the capacity retains $\ge$200~mAhg$^{-1}$ even after 400~cycles at 44~mAg$^{-1}$ with Coulombic efficiency $>$99\%. The deduced diffusion coefficient from galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements for NVO as anode in Li--ion battery is in the range of 10$^{-10}$--10$^{-12}$~cm$^2$s$^{-1}$. In case of Na-ion batteries, the NVO electrode exhibits initial capacity of 385~mAhg$^{-1}$ at 7~mAg$^{-1}$ current rate, but the capacity degradation is relatively faster in subsequent cycles. We find the diffusion coefficient of NVO--Na cells similar to that of NVO--Li. On the other hand, our charge discharge measurements suggest that the overall performance of NVO anode is better in Li--ion battery than Na-ion. Moreover, we use the density functional theory to simulate the energetics of Na vacancy formation in the bulk of the NVO structure, which is found to be 0.88~eV higher than that of the most stable (100) surface. Thus, the Na ion incorporation at the surface of the electrode material is more facile compared to the bulk.
Here we report the extraordinary electrochemical energy storage capability of NiMoO4@NiMoO4 homogeneous hierarchical nanosheet-on-nanowire-arrays (SOWAs) synthesized on nickel substrate by a two-stage hydrothermal process. Comparatively speaking, the SOWAs electrode displays improved electrochemical performances than the bare NiMoO4 nanowire arrays. Such improvements can be ascribed to the characteristic homogeneous hierarchical structure which not only effectively increases the active surface areas for fast charge transfer, but also reduces the electrode resistance significantly by eliminatin…
The large volume change of the silicon (Si) during lithiation and delithiation process has long been a problem impeding its application as one of the most promising anode materials for LIBs. In this paper, we proposed a conceptually new idea to address this problem simply by varying the thickness of the electrode material film. The resulting thickness-gradient electrode exhibits considerable enhancement in the electrochemical performances including capacity, capacity retention, Coulombic efficiency, and rate capability in comparison to the traditional counterparts with uniform thickness. Such …
The effect of heavy tar compounds on the performance of a Ni-YSZ anode supported solid oxide fuel cell was investigated. Both toluene and naphthalene were chosen as model compounds and tested separately with a simulated bio-syngas. Notably, the effect of naphthalene is almost negligible with pure H2 feed to the SOFC, whereas a severe degradation is observed when using a bio-syngas with an H2:CO = 1. The tar compound showed to have a remarkable effect on the inhibition of the WGS shift-reaction, possibly also on the CO direct electro-oxidation at the three-phase-boundary. An interaction through…
Growing energy storage demands on lithium-ion batteries necessitate exploration of new electrochemical materials as next-generation battery electrode materials. In this work, we investigate the previously unexplored electrochemical properties of earth-abundant and tunable Zn1-xSn1+xN2 (x = -0.4 to x = 0.4) thin films, which show high electrical conductivity and high gravimetric capacity for Li insertion. Enhanced cycling performance is achieved compared to previously published end-members Zn3N2 and Sn3N4, showing decreased irreversible loss and increased total capacity and cycle stability. The…
We report the electrochemical investigation of 5% Al doped MoS$_2$@rGO composite as a high-performance anode for sodium (Na)-ion batteries. The x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy characterizations reveal that the Al doping increase the interlayer spacing of (002) plane of MoS$_2$ nanosheets and form a stable 1T phase. The galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements show the specific capacity stable around 450, 400, 350, 300 and 200 mAhg$^{-1}$ at current densities of 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 1~Ag$^{-1}$, respectively. Also, we observ…
Boron-doped, graphene sponge anode was synthesized and applied for the electrochemical oxidation of C4-C8 per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Removal efficiencies, obtained in low conductivity electrolyte (1 mS cm-1) and one-pass flow-through mode, were in the range 16.7-67% at 230 A m-2 of anodic current density, and with the energy consumption of 10.1+-0.7 kWh m-3. Their removal was attributed to electrosorption (7.4-35%), and electrooxidation (9.3-32 %). Defluorination efficiencies of C4-C8 perfluoroalkyl sulfonates and acids were 8-24% due to a fraction of PFAS being electrosorbed …
Downsizing well-established materials to the nanoscale is a key route to novel functionalities, in particular if different functionalities are merged in hybrid nanomaterials. Hybrid carbon-based hierarchical nanostructures are particularly promising for electrochemical energy storage since they combine benefits of nanosize effects, enhanced electrical conductivity and integrity of bulk materials. We show that endohedral multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) encapsulating high-capacity (here: conversion and alloying) electrode materials have a high potential for use in anode materials for lithium-…
Herein, in-situ reduction of bismuth and graphene oxide was performed by a solvothermal method under a nitrogen atmosphere, and the resulting Bi on RGO nanocomposites were used as an anode material for Mg-ion batteries. In addition, it shows high-rate capability with the discharge capacities of 381, 372, 354, 295, and 238 mAh per g at the specific currents of 53, 100, 200, 500, and 7…
Two dimensional materials as electrodes have shown unique advantages such as the infinite planar lengths, broad electrochemical window, and much exposed active sites. In this work, by means of density functional theory computations, we demonstrate that two dimensional PS2 with the 1T-Type structure as many two dimensional disulfides is a promising anode material for sodium ion batteries application. Different from many two dimensional disulfides (e.g. MoS2, TiS2, CrS2) compounds that are semiconducting, PS2 monolayer exhibits metallic character with considerable electronic states at the Fermi …
Silicon is a promising candidate for negative electrodes due to its high theoretical specific capacity (~3579 mAh g-1) and low lithiation potential (~0.40 V vs Li). However, its practical applications in battery have been inhibited by the large volume change (~400%) induced by Li+-insertion into Si lattices. Here, we attempt to resolve this issue at a fundamental level, and report for the first time a novel liquid metal (LM)-mediated spontaneous repairing conductive-additive-free Si anode for Li-ion battery. The fluidity of LM ensures the eternal contact between Si and the conducting-network d…

We consider basic and easily extendible transport formulations for lithium batteries consisting of an anode (Li-foil), a separator (polymer electrolyte), and a composite cathode (composed of electrolyte and intercalation particles). Our mathematical investigations show the following novel features: (i) \emph{complete and very basic description of mixed transport processes} relying on a neutral, binary symmetric electrolyte resulting in a non-standard Poisson equation for the electric potential together with interstitial diffusion approximated by classical diffusion; (ii) \emph{ upscaled and ba…
Zn metal battery has been considered a promising alternative energy storage technology in renewable energy storage and grid storage. It is well-known that the surface orientation of a Zn metal anode is vital to the reversibility of a Zn metal battery. Herein, the (101)-oriented thin Zn metal anode (down to 2 μm) is electrodeposited on a Cu surface by adding dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) electrolyte additive in ZnSO4 aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation indicates the formation of flat terrace-like compact (101)-oriented surfaces. Insitu optical observation confirms that …
We have demonstrated a fiber lithium ion battery (LIB) fabricated by co-twisting a LiFePO4 composite-coated copper wire (cathode) together with an aluminum wire (anode). An all-solid LiPF6 composite layer functioning both as the electrolyte and battery separator is deposited onto the two electrode wires before twisting. To characterize the electrochemical properties of the battery, charge-discharge tests with different C-rates are performed. The fiber LIB has an open-circuit voltage of ~3.4 V, and the typical specific capacity is found to be ~87 mAhg-1 at 0.5 C charge-discharge rate. Besides, …
High-performance anodes for rechargeable Li-ion battery are produced by nanostructuring of the transition metal oxides on a conductive support. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid material of MnO2 directly grown onto fabrics of carbon nanotube fibres, which exhibits notable specific capacity over 1100 and 500 mAh/g at a discharge current density of 25 mA/g and 5 A/g, respectively, with coulombic efficiency of 97.5 %. Combined with 97 % capacity retention after 1500 cycles at a current density of 5 A/g, both capacity and stability are significantly above literature data. Detailed investigations invol…
Controlling nanostructure from molecular, crystal lattice to the electrode level remains as arts in practice, where nucleation and growth of the crystals still require more fundamental understanding and precise control to shape the microstructure of metal deposits and their properties. This is vital to achieve dendrite-free Li metal anodes with high electrochemical reversibility for practical high-energy rechargeable Li batteries. Here, cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy was used to capture the dynamic growth and atomic structure of Li metal deposits at the early nucleation stage, in w…

Na, K and Ca-ion battery electrode materials with appropriate electrochemical properties are desirable candidates for replacing lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their natural richness and low cost. Recently, MoO2 has been reported as the anode material in LIBs, but so far not received attention in Na and other ion batteries. In this paper, the behaviors of Na, K, and Ca on MoO2 are investigated by first-principles calculations. These metal atoms strongly absorb on the hexagonal center of MoO2 and the adsorption results in semiconducting-metallic transition. The low diffusion barrier, 0.…
