Cr2Ge2Te6 (CrGT) is known as an intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductor and a promising candidate for phase-change memory applications. In amorphous CrGT, Cr atoms form non-defective octahedral motifs with Te atoms, similar to those in the crystalline phase. The abundance of Cr[Te6] octahedra is regarded as the key structural factor in reducing the resistance drift coefficient of amorphous CrGT. However, the stage at which these octahedra emerge during melt-quench amorphization remains unclear. Here, we present ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to model the melting process of crystalline CrGT and to investigate the dynamical properties of liquid and supercooled liquid CrGT in detail. Upon heating, Ge atoms are observed to leave their lattice sites earlier than Cr and Te atoms, diffusing into the van der Waals gap and initiating the collapse of the layered structure. The Cr[Te6] octahedra are more robust, maintaining their structural pattern up to 1400 K despite continuous rupture and re-formation of Cr-Te bonds. At higher temperatures, Cr and Te atoms start to migrate independently. In supercooled liquid CrGT at 550 K, most Cr-centered octahedra remain intact, with only limited Cr-Te bond breaking. The collective motion of these octahedra in this temperature regime helps explain why crystallization in CrGT devices can be accomplished in tens of nanoseconds.
The interest in refractory materials is increasing rapidly in recent decades due to the development of hypersonic vehicles. However, which substance has the highest melting point keeps a secret, since precise measurements in extreme condition are overwhelmingly difficult. In the present work, an accurate deep potential model of Hf-Ta-C-N system was firstly trained, and then applied to search for the highest melting point material by using molecular dynamics simulation and Bayesian global optimization. The predicted melting points agree well with experiments, and confirm that the carbon site va…
Melting kinetics of polycrystalline materials is analyzed on the basis of a new model which explicitly couples homogeneous and heterogeneous melting mechanisms. The distinct feature of this approach lies in its ability to evaluate not only grain-size-distribution effects on the overall melting kinetics but also competitions between the two melting mechanisms. For the first time, we reveal the three-part structure of temperature-time-transformation diagrams for melting of polycrystalline materials, through which it is possible to determine a critical temperature across which the dominant meltin…
Among all the properties required for the design of the next generation of PCM (density, heat capacity, thermal expansion, latent energy, volume change upon melting, corrosion rate, etc.) the thermal transport properties are by far the least known, especially for molten salt mixtures and solid solutions. We present in this paper a theoretical framework for accurate predictions of thermal conductivity of multicomponent salt-based PCM, from 273.15 K up to above melting temperature. The solid phase is considered as a microstructure with its proper temperature dependent parameters: phase volume fr…
We present an atomistic-continuum model to simulate ultrashort laser-induced melting processes in semiconductor solids on the example of silicon. The kinetics of transient non-equilibrium phase transition mechanisms is addressed with a Molecular Dynamics method at atomic level, whereas the laser light absorption, strong generated electron-phonon non-equilibrium, fast diffusion and heat conduction due to photo-excited free carriers are accounted for in the continuum. We give a detailed description of the model, which is then applied to study the mechanism of short laser pulse melting of free st…
Processing magnetocaloric materials into magnetic refrigerant particles is an essential issue in developing high-performance magnetic refrigerators. Here, we succeed in stably producing magnetocaloric particles of the promising material HoAl2 by a newly devised method based on electrode induction melting gas atomization process. The particle size range is on the order of submillimeter, which is suitable for practical refrigeration systems. The resulting particles with less contamination have good morphological, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties: (i) almost spherical shapes with few inter…
The dynamic properties of liquid phase-change materials (PCMs), such as viscosity $η$ and atomic self-diffusion coefficients D, play an essential role in ultrafast phase switching behavior of novel non-volatile phase-change memory applications, as they are intimately related to crystallization kinetics and phase stabilities. To connect $η$ to D, the Stokes-Einstein relation (SER) is commonly assumed to be valid at high temperatures near or above the melting temperature $T_{m}$ and is frequently employed for assessing liquid fragility (or crystal growth velocity) of technologically important PC…
Sb-doped Bi2Te3 is known since the 1950s as the best thermoelectric material for near-room temperature operation. Improvements in material performance are expected from nanostructuring procedures. We present a straightforward and fast method to synthesize already nanostructured pellets that show an enhanced ZT due to a remarkably low thermal conductivity and unusually high Seebeck coefficient for a nominal composition optimized for arc-melting: Bi0.35Sb1.65Te3. We provide a detailed structural analysis of the Bi2-xSbxTe3 series based on neutron powder diffraction as a function of composition a…
We show that alloying with rare earth metals (REMs) can dramatically improve the machineability of a range of titanium alloys, even though the REM is not incorporated in the alloy matrix. The mechanism for this is that under cutting, shear bands are formed within which the nano-precipitates of REM are shear mixed. This lowers the melting point such that the mechanism of deformation changes from dislocation mechanism to localised amorphisation and shear softening. The material then fractures along the thin, amorphous shear-band. Outside the shear band, the REM remains as precipitates. The new a…
We present thermodynamic crystallization and melting models and calculate phase change velocities in $Ge_2 Sb_2 Te_5$ based on kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. The calculated phase change velocities are strong functions of grain size, with smaller grains beginning to melt at lower temperatures. Phase change velocities are continuous functions of temperature which determine crystallization and melting rates. Hence, set and reset times as well as power and peak current requirements for switching are strong functions of grain size. Grain boundary amorphization can lead to a sufficient increa…
Materials with higher operating temperatures than today's state of the art can improve system performance in several applications and enable new technologies. Under most scenarios, a protective oxide scale with high melting temperatures and thermodynamic stability as well as low ionic diffusivity is required. Thus, the design of high-temperature systems would benefit from knowledge of these properties and related ones for all known oxides. While some properties of interest are known for many oxides (e.g. elastic constants exist for over 1,000 oxides), melting temperature is known for a relativ…
Beryllium (Be) is an important material with wide applications ranging from aerospace components to X-ray equipments. Yet a precise understanding of its phase diagram remains elusive. We have investigated the phase stability of Be using a recently developed hybrid free energy computation method that accounts for anharmonic effects by invoking phonon quasiparticles. We find that the hcp to bcc transition occurs near the melting curve at 0<P<11 GPa with a positive Clapeyron slope of 41 K/GPa. The bcc phase exists in a narrow temperature range that shrinks with increasing pressure, explaining the…
Combining Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction, Mechanistic Modeling, and Machine Learning for In Situ Subsurface Temperature Quantification during Laser Melting
Melting is a high temperature process that requires extensive sampling of configuration space, thus making melting temperature prediction computationally very expensive and challenging. Over the past few years, I have built two methods to address this challenge, one via direct density functional theory (DFT) molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the other via deep learning graph neural networks. The DFT approach is based on statistical analysis of small-size solid-liquid coexistence MD simulations. It eliminates the risk of metastable superheated solid in the fast-heating method, while also …
We present a simple, fast, and reliable method to compute the melting curves of materials with ab initio molecular dynamics. It is based on the two-phase thermodynamic model of [Lin et al., J. Chem. Phys. 119, 11792 (2003)] and its improved version given by [Desjarlais, Phys. Rev. E, 88, 062145 (2013)]. In this model, the velocity autocorrelation function is utilized to calculate the contribution of the nuclei motion to the entropy of the solid and liquid phases. It is then possible to find the thermodynamic conditions of equal Gibbs free energy between these phases, defining the melting curve…
The influence of Zr additions (in the form of ZrH2 particles) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of IN718 Ni-based superalloy manufactured by selective laser melting was explored. Fully dense alloys could be obtained by careful selection of the processing parameters. The addition of ZrH2 did not modify the microstructure of the alloy but introduced a dispersion of Zr-rich globular particles of approximately 50 nm in diameter which increased the strength of the as-printed material at ambient (23C) and high temperature (550C). Heat treatments of solubilisation followed by aging led …
At the nanoscale, materials exhibit unique properties that differ greatly from those of the bulk state. In the case of Ag$_x$Pt$_{1-x}$ nanoalloys, we aimed to study the solid-liquid transition of nanoparticles of different sizes and compositions. This system is particularly interesting since Pt has a high melting point (2041 K compare to 1035 K for Ag) which could keep the nanoparticle solid during different catalytic reactions at relatively high temperatures, such as we need in the growth of nanotubes. We performed atomic scale simulations using semi-empirical potential implemented in a Mont…
Phase diagrams are the most reliable way of predicting phase changes in a system. In this work, we create the phase diagram of the Ga(20-x)Al(x)+ bimetallic cluster system, for which the monometallic clusters display greater-than- bulk melting behaviour. Employing first-principles Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics in the microcanonical ensemble, we describe the solid-liquid-like phase transition in two distinct compositions Ga11Al9+ and Ga3Al17+. The clusters show peaks in specific heat at 824 K and 922 K respectively which is above the corresponding bulk alloy melting temperatures. Mean squ…
Connecting a bulk material's microscopic defects to its macroscopic properties is an age-old problem in materials science. Long-range interactions between dislocations (line defects) are known to play a key role in how materials deform or melt, but we lack the tools to connect these dynamics to the macroscopic properties. We introduce time-resolved dark-field X-ray microscopy to directly visualize how dislocations move and interact over hundreds of micrometers, deep inside bulk aluminum. With real-time movies, we reveal the thermally-activated motion and interactions of dislocations that compr…
Low melting point metals such as Field's metal and gallium are increasingly used as transition phases in stiffness-tuning soft materials and devices. Nevertheless, there is a knowledge gap on the fundamental constitutive behaviors of metals with melting points below 100 degree. This letter reports the stress-strain relationships of Field's metal at various temperatures and strain rates. This metal has the lowest melting point among metals whose constitutive behaviors have been studied systematically. Experimental results indicate that Field's metal exhibits a strain-softening behavior, in oppo…
We investigate the ability of a multi-order parameter phase field model with obstacle potentials to describe grain boundary premelting in equilibrium situations. In agreement with an energetic picture we find that the transition between dry and wet grain boundaries at the bulk melting point is given by the threshold $2σ_{sl}=σ_{gb}$, with $σ_{sl}$ being the solid-melt interfacial energy and $σ_{gb}$ the energy of a dry grain boundary. The predictions for premelting are confirmed by simulations using the phase field package OpenPhase. For the prediction of the kinetics of melting along grain bo…

Ge-Sn alloys with a sufficiently high concentration of Sn is a direct bandgap group IV material. Recently, ion implantation followed by pulsed laser melting has been shown to be a promising method to realize this material due to its high reproducibility and precursor-free process. A Ge-Sn alloy with ~9 at.% Sn was shown to be feasible by this technique. However, the compressive strain, inherently occurring in heterogeneous epitaxy of the film, evidently delays the material from the direct bandgap transition. In this report, an attempt to synthesize a highly-relaxed Ge-Sn alloy will be presente…
Despite their technological relevance, a full microscopic understanding of glasses is still lacking. This applies even more to their surfaces whose properties largely differ from that of the bulk material. Here, we experimentally investigate the surface of a two-dimensional glass as a function of the effective temperature. To yield a free surface, we use an attractive colloidal suspension of micron-sized particles interacting via tunable critical Casimir forces. Similar to crystals, we observe surface melting of the glass, i.e., the formation of a liquid film at the surface well below the glas…

Active learning (AL) can drastically accelerate materials discovery; its power has been shown in various classes of materials and target properties. Prior efforts have used machine learning models for the optimal selection of physical experiments or physics-based simulations. However, the latter efforts have been mostly limited to the use of electronic structure calculations and properties that can be obtained at the unit cell level and with negligible noise. We couple AL with molecular dynamics simulations to identify multiple principal component alloys (MPCAs) with high melting temperatures.…
The interplay between the surface and domain wall phenomena in multiferroic LaxBi1-xFeO3 in the vicinity of morphotropic phase transition is explored on the atomic level. Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) has enabled mapping of atomic structures of the material with picometer-level precision, providing direct insight into the spatial distribution of the order parameters in this material and their behavior at surfaces and interfaces. Here, we use the thermodynamic Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) approach to explain the emergence of spatially modulated phases (SMP) in La0.22Bi0.7…
Ultrastable vapor-deposited glasses display uncommon material properties. Most remarkably, upon heating they are believed to melt via a liquid front that originates at the free surface and propagates over a mesoscopic crossover length, before crossing over to bulk melting. We combine swap Monte Carlo with molecular dynamics simulations to prepare and melt isotropic amorphous films of unprecedendtly high kinetic stability. We are able to directly observe both bulk and front melting, and the crossover between them. We measure the front velocity over a broad range of conditions, and a crossover l…

A novel approach based on dynamic thermal vibration is proposed to calculate the heat capacity and thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) for metal crystalline materials from 0K to the melting point. The motion of metal atomic clusters is decomposed into structural deformation and thermal vibration. Then thermal vibration equations are established by the fourth-order Taylor expansion of Hamiltonian at the transient structural deformation position $\bar{\mathbf{x}}$. As a result, the thermal vibration frequencies dynamically change with the structural deformation positions and temperatures. A para…
The invariance of several structural and dynamical properties of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) system along the freezing and melting lines is interpreted in terms of the isomorph theory. First the freezing/melting lines for LJ system are shown to be approximated by isomorphs. Then we show that the invariants observed along the freezing and melting isomorphs are also observed on other isomorphs in the liquid and crystalline phase. Structure is probed by the radial distribution function and the structure factor and dynamics is probed by the mean-square displacement, the intermediate scattering function…
