We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrices $H$ consisting of blocks of size $M\geq N^{6/7}$. The matrix elements are i.i.d. within the blocks, close to a Gaussian in the four moment matching sense, but their distribution varies from block to block to form a block-band structure, with an essential band width $M$. We show that the entries of the Green's function $G(z)=(H-z)^{-1}$ satisfy the local semicircle law with spectral parameter $z=E+\mathbf{i}η$ down to the real axis for any $η\gg N^{-1}$, using a combination of the supersymmetry method inspired by \cite{Sh2014} and the Green's function comparison strategy. Previous estimates were valid only for $η\gg M^{-1}$. The new estimate also implies that the eigenvectors in the middle of the spectrum are fully delocalized.
We prove a local law and eigenvector delocalization for general Wigner-type matrices. Our methods allow us to get the best possible interval length and optimal eigenvector delocalization in the dense case, and the first results of such kind for the sparse case down to $p=\frac{g(n)\log n}{n}$ with $g(n)\to\infty$. We specialize our results to the case of the Stochastic Block Model, and we also obtain a local law for the case when the number of classes is unbounded.
We consider Hermitian random matrices of the form $H = W + λV$, where $W$ is a Wigner matrix and $V$ a diagonal random matrix independent of $W$. We assume subexponential decay for the matrix entries of $W$ and we choose $λ\sim 1$ so that the eigenvalues of $W$ and $λV$ are of the same order in the bulk of the spectrum. In this paper, we prove for a large class of diagonal matrices $V$ that the local deformed semicircle law holds for $H$, which is an analogous result to the local semicircle law for Wigner matrices. We also prove complete delocalization of eigenvectors and other results about t…
We study the eigenvectors of generalized Wigner matrices with subexponential entries and prove that they delocalize at the optimal rate with overwhelming probability. We also prove high probability delocalization bounds with sharp constants. Our proof uses an analysis of the eigenvector moment flow introduced by Bourgade and Yau (2017) to bound logarithmic moments of eigenvector entries for random matrices with small Gaussian components. We then extend this control to all generalized Wigner matrices by comparison arguments based on a framework of regularized eigenvectors, level repulsion, and …
We prove that the eigenvectors associated to small enough eigenvalues of an heavy-tailed symmetric random matrix are delocalized with probability tending to one as the size of the matrix grows to infinity. The delocalization is measured thanks to a simple criterion related to the inverse participation ratio which computes an average ratio of L4 and L2-norms of vectors. In contrast, as a consequence of a previous result, for random matrices with sufficiently heavy tails, the eigenvectors associated to large enough eigenvalues are localized according to the same criterion. The proof is based on …
We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H = (h_{xy})$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix entries $h_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in (\bZ/L\bZ)^d$, are independent, centred random variables with variances $s_{xy} = \E |h_{xy}|^2$. We assume that $s_{xy}$ is negligible if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$. In one dimension we prove that the eigenvectors of $H$ are delocalized if $W\gg L^{4/5}$. We also show that the magnitude of the matrix entries $\abs{G_{xy}}^2$ of the resolvent $G=G(z)=(H-z)^{-1}$ is self-averaging and we compute $\E \abs{G_{xy}}^2$. We show that, as $L\to\inf…
We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix elements $H_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in Λ\subset \Z^d$, are independent and their variances satisfy $σ_{xy}^2:=\E \abs{H_{xy}}^2 = W^{-d} f((x - y)/W)$ for some probability density $f$. We assume that the law of each matrix element $H_{xy}$ is symmetric and exhibits subexponential decay. We prove that the time evolution of a quantum particle subject to the Hamiltonian $H$ is diffusive on time scales $t\ll W^{d/3}$. We also show that the localization length of the eigenvectors of $H$ is larger than …
We prove that an n by n random matrix G with independent entries is completely delocalized. Suppose the entries of G have zero means, variances uniformly bounded below, and a uniform tail decay of exponential type. Then with high probability all unit eigenvectors of G have all coordinates of magnitude O(n^{-1/2}), modulo logarithmic corrections. This comes a consequence of a new, geometric, approach to delocalization for random matrices.
We propose a boundary regularity condition for the $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued subordination functions in free probability to prove the local limit theorem and delocalization of eigenvectors for polynomials in two random matrices. We prove this through estimating the pair of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued approximate subordination functions for the sum of two $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued random matrices $γ_1\otimes C_N+γ_2\otimes U_N^*D_NU_N$, where $C_N$, $D_N$ are deterministic diagonal matrices, and $U_N$ is Haar unitary.
Improving upon results of Rudelson and Vershynin, we establish delocalization bounds for eigenvectors of independent-entry random matrices. In particular, we show that with high probability every eigenvector is delocalized, meaning any subset of its coordinates carries an appropriate proportion of its mass. Our results hold for random matrices with genuinely complex as well as real entries. In both cases, our bounds match numerical simulations, up to lower order terms, indicating the optimality of our results. As an application of our methods, we also establish delocalization bounds for normal…
Let $x \in S^{n-1}$ be a unit eigenvector of an $n \times n$ random matrix. This vector is delocalized if it is distributed roughly uniformly over the real or complex sphere. This intuitive notion can be quantified in various ways. In these lectures, we will concentrate on the no-gaps delocalization. This type of delocalization means that with high probability, any non-negligible subset of the support of $x$ carries a non-negligible mass. Proving the no-gaps delocalization requires establishing small ball probability bounds for the projections of random vector. Using Fourier transform, we will…
We prove that with high probability, every eigenvector of a random matrix is delocalized in the sense that any subset of its coordinates carries a non-negligible portion of its $\ell_2$ norm. Our results pertain to a wide class of random matrices, including matrices with independent entries, symmetric and skew-symmetric matrices, as well as some other naturally arising ensembles. The matrices can be real and complex; in the latter case we assume that the real and imaginary parts of the entries are independent.
We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrices with independent identical distributed entries. The matrix is normalized so that the average spacing between consecutive eigenvalues is of order 1/N. Under suitable assumptions on the distribution of the single matrix element, we prove that, away from the spectral edges, the density of eigenvalues concentrates around the Wigner semicircle law on energy scales $η\gg N^{-1} (\log N)^8$. Up to the logarithmic factor, this is the smallest energy scale for which the semicircle law may be valid. We also prove that for all eigenvalues away from the sp…
Consider an n x n Hermitian random matrix with, above the diagonal, independent entries with alpha-stable symmetric distribution and 0 < alpha < 2. We establish new bounds on the rate of convergence of the empirical spectral distribution of this random matrix as n goes to infinity. When 1 < alpha < 2 we give vanishing bounds on the Lp-norm of the eigenvectors normalized to have unit L2-norm goes to 0. On the contrary, when 0 < alpha < 2/3, we prove that these eigenvectors are localized.
We consider Hermitian random band matrices $H=(h_{xy})$ on the $d$-dimensional lattice $(\mathbb Z/L\mathbb Z)^d$. The entries $h_{xy}$ are independent (up to Hermitian conditions) centered complex Gaussian random variables with variances $s_{xy}=\mathbb E|h_{xy}|^2$. The variance matrix $S=(s_{xy})$ has a banded structure so that $s_{xy}$ is negligible if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$. In dimensions $d\ge 8$, we prove that, as long as $W\ge L^ε$ for a small constant $ε>0$, with high probability most bulk eigenvectors of $H$ are delocalized in the sense that their localization lengths are…
We consider Green's functions $G(z):=(H-z)^{-1}$ of Hermitian random band matrices $H$ on the $d$-dimensional lattice $(\mathbb Z/L\mathbb Z)^d$. The entries $h_{xy}=\bar h_{yx}$ of $H$ are independent centered complex Gaussian random variables with variances $s_{xy}=\mathbb E|h_{xy}|^2$. The variances satisfy a banded profile so that $s_{xy}$ is negligible if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$. For any $n\in \mathbb N$, we construct an expansion of the $T$-variable, $T_{xy}=|m|^2 \sum_αs_{xα}|G_{αy}|^2$, with an error $O(W^{-nd/2})$, and use it to prove a local law on the Green's function. Th…
We consider some random band matrices with band-width $N^μ$ whose entries are independent random variables with distribution tail in $x^{-α}$. We consider the largest eigenvalues and the associated eigenvectors and prove the following phase transition. On the one hand, when $α\textless{}2(1+μ^{-1})$, the largest eigenvalues have order $N^{(1+μ)/α}$, are asymptotically distributed as a Poisson process and their associated eigenvectors are essentially carried by two coordinates (this phenomenon has already been remarked by Soshnikov for full matrices with heavy tailed entries,i.e. when $α\textle…
We survey recent mathematical results about the spectrum of random band matrices. We start by exposing the Erd{\H o}s-Schlein-Yau dynamic approach, its application to Wigner matrices, and extension to other mean-field models. We then introduce random band matrices and the problem of their Anderson transition. We finally describe a method to obtain delocalization and universality in some sparse regimes, highlighting the role of quantum unique ergodicity.
We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix elements $H_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in Λ\subset \Z^d$, are independent, uniformly distributed random variables if $\abs{x-y}$ is less than the band width $W$, and zero otherwise. We prove that the time evolution of a quantum particle subject to the Hamiltonian $H$ is diffusive on time scales $t\ll W^{d/3}$. We also show that the localization length of an arbitrarily large majority of the eigenvectors is larger than a factor $W^{d/6}$ times the band width. All results are uniform in the size $\absΛ…
We prove a local law for the adjacency matrix of the Erdős-Rényi graph $G(N, p)$ in the supercritical regime $ pN \geq C\log N$ where $G(N,p)$ has with high probability no isolated vertices. In the same regime, we also prove the complete delocalization of the eigenvectors. Both results are false in the complementary subcritical regime. Our result improves the corresponding results from [11] by extending them all the way down to the critical scale $pN = O(\log N)$. A key ingredient of our proof is a new family of multilinear large deviation estimates for sparse random vectors, which carefully b…
This is the second part of a three part series abut delocalization for band matrices. In this paper, we consider a general class of $N\times N$ random band matrices $H=(H_{ij})$ whose entries are centered random variables, independent up to a symmetry constraint. We assume that the variances $\mathbb E |H_{ij}|^2$ form a band matrix with typical band width $1\ll W\ll N$. We consider the generalized resolvent of $H$ defined as $G(Z):=(H - Z)^{-1}$, where $Z$ is a deterministic diagonal matrix such that $Z_{ij}=\left(z 1_{1\leq i \leq W}+\widetilde z 1_{ i > W} \right) δ_{ij}$, with two distinct…
This paper studies the delocalized regime of an ultrametric random operator whose independent entries have variances decaying in a suitable hierarchical metric on $\mathbb{N}$. When the decay-rate of the off-diagonal variances is sufficiently slow, we prove that the spectral measures are uniformly $θ$-Hölder continuous for all $θ\in (0,1)$. In finite volumes, we prove that the corresponding ultrametric random matrices have completely extended eigenfunctions and that the local eigenvalue statistics converge in the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta universality class.
We study delocalization of null vectors and eigenvectors of random matrices with i.i.d entries. Let $A$ be an $n\times n$ random matrix with i.i.d real subgaussian entries of zero mean and unit variance. We show that with probability at least $1-e^{-\log^{2} n}$ $$ \min\limits_{I\subset[n],\,|I|= m}\|{\bf v}_I\| \geq \frac{m^{3/2}}{n^{3/2}\log^Cn}\|{\bf v}\| $$ for any real eigenvector ${\bf v}$ and any $m\in[\log^C n,n]$, where ${\bf v}_I$ denotes the restriction of ${\bf v}$ to $I$. Further, when the entries of $A$ are complex, with i.i.d real and imaginary parts, we show that with probabili…
We consider a general class of random matrices whose entries are centred random variables, independent up to a symmetry constraint. We establish precise high-probability bounds on the averages of arbitrary monomials in the resolvent matrix entries. Our results generalize the previous results of [5,16,17] which constituted a key step in the proof of the local semicircle law with optimal error bound in mean-field random matrix models. Our bounds apply to random band matrices, and improve previous estimates from order 2 to order 4 in the cases relevant for applications. In particular, they lead t…
Let $X_N$ be a $N\times N$ matrix whose entries are i.i.d. complex random variables with mean zero and variance $\frac{1}{N}$. We study the asymptotic spectral distribution of the eigenvalues of the covariance matrix $X_N^*X_N$ for $N\to\infty$. We prove that the empirical density of eigenvalues in an interval $[E,E+η]$ converges to the Marchenko-Pastur law locally on the optimal scale, $N η/\sqrt{E} \gg (\log N)^b$, and in any interval up to the hard edge, $\frac{(\log N)^b}{N^2}\lesssim E \leq 4-κ$, for any $κ>0$. As a consequence, we show the complete delocalization of the eigenvectors.
In this paper we establish eigenvector delocalization and bulk universality for Lévy matrices, which are real, symmetric, $N \times N$ random matrices $\textbf{H}$ whose upper triangular entries are independent, identically distributed $α$-stable laws. First, if $α\in (1, 2)$ and $E \in \mathbb{R}$ is any energy bounded away from $0$, we show that every eigenvector of $\textbf{H}$ corresponding to an eigenvalue near $E$ is completely delocalized and that the local spectral statistics of $\textbf{H}$ around $E$ converge to those of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) as $N$ tends to $\infty$…
We consider an $N$ by $N$ real symmetric random matrix $X=(x_{ij})$ where $\mathbb{E}x_{ij}x_{kl}=ξ_{ijkl}$. Under the assumption that $(ξ_{ijkl})$ is the discretization of a piecewise Lipschitz function and that the correlation is short-ranged we prove that the empirical spectral measure of $X$ converges to a probability measure. The Stieltjes transform of the limiting measure can be obtained by solving a functional equation. Under the slightly stronger assumption that $(x_{ij})$ has a strictly positive definite covariance matrix, we prove a local law for the empirical measure down to the opt…

We study the hierarchical analogue of power-law random band matrices, a symmetric ensemble of random matrices with independent entries whose variances decay exponentially in the metric induced by the tree topology on $\mathbb{N}$. We map out the entirety of the localization regime by proving the localization of eigenfunctions and Poisson statistics of the suitably scaled eigenvalues. Our results complement existing works on complete delocalization and random matrix universality, thereby proving the existence of a phase transition in this model.
We consider a general class of symmetric or Hermitian random band matrices $H=(h_{xy})_{x,y \in \llbracket 1,N\rrbracket^d}$ in any dimension $d\ge 1$, where the entries are independent, centered random variables with variances $s_{xy}=\mathbb E|h_{xy}|^2$. We assume that $s_{xy}$ vanishes if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$, and we are interested in the mesoscopic scale with $1\ll W\ll N$. Define the {\it{generalized resolvent}} of $H$ as $G(H,Z):=(H - Z)^{-1}$, where $Z$ is a deterministic diagonal matrix with entries $Z_{xx}\in \mathbb C_+$ for all $x$. Then we establish a precise high-pr…
The spectral moments of ensembles of sparse random block matrices are analytically evaluated in the limit of large order. The structure of the sparse matrix corresponds to the Erdös-Renyi random graph. The blocks are i.i.d. random matrices of the classical ensembles GOE or GUE. The moments are evaluated for finite or infinite dimension of the blocks. The correspondences between sets of closed walks on trees and classes of irreducible partitions studied in free probability together with functional relations are powerful tools for analytic evaluation of the limiting moments. They are helpful to …
This is a continuation of our earlier paper on the universality of the eigenvalues of Wigner random matrices. The main new results of this paper are an extension of the results in that paper from the bulk of the spectrum up to the edge. In particular, we prove a variant of the universality results of Soshnikov for the largest eigenvalues, assuming moment conditions rather than symmetry conditions. The main new technical observation is that there is a significant bias in the Cauchy interlacing law near the edge of the spectrum which allows one to continue ensuring the delocalization of eigenvec…
We study ensembles of sparse random block matrices generated from the adjacency matrix of a Erdös-Renyi random graph with $N$ vertices of average degree $Z$, inserting a real symmetric $d \times d$ random block at each non-vanishing entry. We consider some ensembles of random block matrices with rank $r < d$ and with maximal rank, $r=d$. The spectral moments of the sparse random block matrix are evaluated for $N \to \infty$, $d$ finite or infinite, and several probability distributions for the blocks (e.g. fixed trace, bounded trace and Gaussian). Because of the concentration of the probabilit…
This paper is about the relation of random matrix theory and the subordination phenomenon in complex analysis. We find that the resolvent of the sum of two random matrices is approximately subordinated to the resolvents of the original matrices. We estimate the error terms in this relation and in the subordination relation for the traces of the resolvents. This allows us to prove a local limit law for eigenvalues and a delocalization result for eigenvectors of the sum of two random matrices. In addition, we use subordination to determine the limit of the largest eigenvalue for the rank-one def…
We are going to study the limiting spectral measure of fixed dimensional Hermitian block-matrices with large dimensional Wigner blocks. We are going also to identify the limiting spectral measure when the Hermitian block-structure is Circulant. Using the limiting spectral measure of a Hermitian Circulant block-matrix we will show that the spectral measure of a Wigner matrix with $k-$weakly dependent entries need not to be the semicircle law in the limit.
Motivated by the stochastic block model, we investigate a class of Wigner-type matrices with certain block structures, and establish a CLT for the corresponding linear spectral statistics via the large-deviation bounds from local law and the cumulant expansion formula. We apply the results to the stochastic block model. Specifically, a class of renormalized adjacency matrices will be block-Wigner-type matrices. Further, we show that for certain estimator of such renormalized adjacency matrices, which will be no longer Wigner-type but share long-range non-decaying weak correlations among the en…
Motivated by the question of whether a random polynomial with integer coefficients is likely to be irreducible, we study the probability that a monic polynomial with integer coefficients has a low-degree factor over the integers, which is equivalent to having a low-degree algebraic root. It is known in certain cases that random polynomials with integer coefficients are very likely to be irreducible, and our project can be viewed as part of the general program of testing whether this is a universal behavior exhibited by many random polynomial models. Our main result shows that pointwise delocal…

First, we consider a nonnegative homogeneous block tri-diagonal matrix and obtain its convergence parameter, where some results in the field of matrix analytic method are extended to the case where block matrices have countably infinite dimension. Second, we apply our results to a multi-dimensional QBD process and obtain lower bounds for the directional asymptotic decay rates of the stationary distribution.
We study two specific symmetric random block Toeplitz (of dimension $k \times k$) matrices: where the blocks (of size $n \times n$) are (i) matrices with i.i.d. entries, and (ii) asymmetric Toeplitz matrices. Under suitable assumptions on the entries, their limiting spectral distributions (LSDs) exist (after scaling by $\sqrt{nk}$) when (a) $k$ is fixed and $n \to\infty$ (b) $n$ is fixed and $k\rightarrow \infty$ (c) $n$ and $k$ go to $\infty$ simultaneously. Further the LSD's obtained in (a) and (b) coincide with those in (c) when $n$ or respectively $k$ tends to infinity. This limit in (c) i…
Block Toeplitz and Hankel matrices arise in many aspects of applications. In this paper, we will research the distributions of eigenvalues for some models and get the semicircle law. Firstly we will give trace formulae of block Toeplitz and Hankel matrix. Then we will prove that the almost sure limit $γ_{_T}^{(m)}$ $(γ_{_H}^{(m)})$ of eigenvalue distributions of random block Toeplitz (Hankel) matrices exist and give the moments of the limit distributions where $m$ is the order of the blocks. Then we will prove the existence of almost sure limit of eigenvalue distributions of random block Toepl…
In this paper we consider random block matrices, which generalize the general beta ensembles, which were recently investigated by Dumitriu and Edelmann (2002, 2005). We demonstrate that the eigenvalues of these random matrices can be uniformly approximated by roots of matrix orthogonal polynomials which were investigated independently from the random matrix literature. As a consequence we derive the asymptotic spectral distribution of these matrices. The limit distribution has a density, which can be represented as the trace of an integral of densities of matrix measures corresponding to the C…
This paper is the first chapter of three of the author's undergraduate thesis. We study the random matrix ensemble of covariance matrices arising from random $(d_b, d_w)$-regular bipartite graphs on a set of $M$ black vertices and $N$ white vertices, for $d_b \gg \log^4 N$. We simultaneously prove that the Green's functions of these covariance matrices and the adjacency matrices of the underlying graphs agree with the corresponding limiting law (e.g. Marchenko-Pastur law for covariance matrices) down to the optimal scale. This is an improvement from the previously known mesoscopic results. We …
This paper can be thought of as a remark of \cite{llw}, where the authors studied the eigenvalue distribution $μ_{X_N}$ of random block Toeplitz band matrices with given block order $m$. In this note we will give explicit density functions of $\lim\limits_{N\to\infty}μ_{X_N}$ when the bandwidth grows slowly. In fact, these densities are exactly the normalized one-point correlation functions of $m\times m$ Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE for short). The series $\{\lim\limits_{N\to\infty}μ_{X_N}|m\in\mathbb{N}\}$ can be seen as a transition from the standard normal distribution to semicircle dist…
We identify a relationship between a random walk on a certain Euclidean lattice and incidence matrices of balanced incomplete block designs. We then compute the return probability of the random walk and use it to obtain the asymptotic number of BIBD incidence matrices (as the number of columns increases). Our strategy is similar in spirit to the one used by de Launey and Levin to count partial Hadamard matrices.
