We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix elements $H_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in Λ\subset \Z^d$, are independent, uniformly distributed random variables if $\abs{x-y}$ is less than the band width $W$, and zero otherwise. We prove that the time evolution of a quantum particle subject to the Hamiltonian $H$ is diffusive on time scales $t\ll W^{d/3}$. We also show that the localization length of an arbitrarily large majority of the eigenvectors is larger than a factor $W^{d/6}$ times the band width. All results are uniform in the size $\absΛ$ of the matrix.
We study the high-energy eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a compact Riemannian manifold with Anosov geodesic flow. The localization of a semiclassical measure associated with a sequence of eigenfunctions is characterized by the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of this measure. We show that this entropy is necessarily bounded from below by a constant which, in the case of constant negative curvature, equals half the maximal entropy. In this sense, high-energy eigenfunctions are at least half-delocalized.
We prove a quantum-ergodicity theorem on large graphs, for eigenfunctions of Schrödinger operators in a very general setting. We consider a sequence of finite graphs endowed with discrete Schrödinger operators, assumed to have a local weak limit. We assume that our graphs have few short loops, in other words that the limit model is a random rooted tree endowed with a random discrete Schrödinger operator. We show that absolutely continuous spectrum for the infinite model, reinforced by a good control of the moments of the Green function, imply "quantum ergodicity", a form of spatial delocalizat…
We study a random Schroedinger operator, the Laplacian with random Dirac delta potentials on a torus T^d_L = R^d/LZ^d, in the thermodynamic limit L\to\infty, for dimension d=2. The potentials are located on a randomly distorted lattice Z^2+ω, where the displacements are i.i.d. random variables sampled from a compactly supported probability density. We prove that, if the disorder is sufficiently weak, there exists a certain energy threshold E_0>0 above which exponential localization of the eigenfunctions must break down. In fact we can rule out any decay faster than a certain polynomial one. Ou…
We give a delocalization estimate for eigenfunctions of the discrete Laplacian on large $d+1$-regular graphs, showing that any subset of the graph supporting $ε$ of the $L^2$ mass of an eigenfunction must be large. For graphs satisfying a mild girth-like condition, this bound will be exponential in the size of the graph.
This article is concerned with properties of delocalization for eigenfunctions of Schrödinger operators on large finite graphs. More specifically, we show that the eigenfunctions have a large support and we assess their lp-norms. Our estimates hold for any fixed, possibly irregular graph, in prescribed energy regions, and also for certain sequences of graphs such as N-lifts.
We consider the Rosenzweig-Porter model $H = V + \sqrt{T}\, Φ$, where $V$ is a $N \times N$ diagonal matrix, $Φ$ is drawn from the $N \times N$ Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble, and $N^{-1} \ll T \ll 1$. We prove that the eigenfunctions of $H$ are typically supported in a set of approximately $NT$ sites, thereby confirming the existence of a previously conjectured non-ergodic delocalized phase. Our proof is based on martingale estimates along the characteristic curves of the stochastic advection equation satisfied by the local resolvent of the Brownian motion representation of $H$.
We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H = (h_{xy})$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix entries $h_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in (\bZ/L\bZ)^d$, are independent, centred random variables with variances $s_{xy} = \E |h_{xy}|^2$. We assume that $s_{xy}$ is negligible if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$. In one dimension we prove that the eigenvectors of $H$ are delocalized if $W\gg L^{4/5}$. We also show that the magnitude of the matrix entries $\abs{G_{xy}}^2$ of the resolvent $G=G(z)=(H-z)^{-1}$ is self-averaging and we compute $\E \abs{G_{xy}}^2$. We show that, as $L\to\inf…
This paper studies the delocalized regime of an ultrametric random operator whose independent entries have variances decaying in a suitable hierarchical metric on $\mathbb{N}$. When the decay-rate of the off-diagonal variances is sufficiently slow, we prove that the spectral measures are uniformly $θ$-Hölder continuous for all $θ\in (0,1)$. In finite volumes, we prove that the corresponding ultrametric random matrices have completely extended eigenfunctions and that the local eigenvalue statistics converge in the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta universality class.
We consider a sequence of finite quantum graphs with few loops, so that they converge, in the sense of Benjamini-Schramm, to a random infinite quantum tree. We assume these quantum trees are spectrally delocalized in some interval $I$, in the sense that their spectrum in $I$ is purely absolutely continuous and their Green's functions are well controlled near the real axis. We furthermore suppose that the underlying sequence of discrete graphs is expanding. We deduce a quantum ergodicity result, showing that the eigenfunctions with eigenvalues lying in $I$ are spatially delocalized.
Random operators may acquire extended states formed from a multitude of mutually resonating local quasi-modes. This mechanics is explored here in the context of the random Schrödinger operator on the complete graph. The operators exhibits local quasi modes mixed through a single channel. While most of its spectrum consists of localized eigenfunctions, under appropriate conditions it includes also bands of states which are delocalized in the $\ell^1$-though not in $\ell^2$-sense, where the eigenvalues have the statistics of Šeba spectra. The analysis proceeds through some general observations o…
We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix elements $H_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in Λ\subset \Z^d$, are independent and their variances satisfy $σ_{xy}^2:=\E \abs{H_{xy}}^2 = W^{-d} f((x - y)/W)$ for some probability density $f$. We assume that the law of each matrix element $H_{xy}$ is symmetric and exhibits subexponential decay. We prove that the time evolution of a quantum particle subject to the Hamiltonian $H$ is diffusive on time scales $t\ll W^{d/3}$. We also show that the localization length of the eigenvectors of $H$ is larger than …
We consider Hermitian random band matrices $H=(h_{xy})$ on the $d$-dimensional lattice $(\mathbb Z/L\mathbb Z)^d$. The entries $h_{xy}$ are independent (up to Hermitian conditions) centered complex Gaussian random variables with variances $s_{xy}=\mathbb E|h_{xy}|^2$. The variance matrix $S=(s_{xy})$ has a banded structure so that $s_{xy}$ is negligible if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$. In dimensions $d\ge 8$, we prove that, as long as $W\ge L^ε$ for a small constant $ε>0$, with high probability most bulk eigenvectors of $H$ are delocalized in the sense that their localization lengths are…
We characterize quantum limits and semi-classical measures corresponding to sequences of eigenfunctions for systems of coupled quantum harmonic oscillators with arbitrary frequencies. The structure of the set of semi-classical measures turns out to depend strongly on the arithmetic relations between frequencies of each decoupled oscillator. In particular, we show that as soon as these frequencies are not rational multiples of a fixed fundamental frequency, the set of semi-classical measures is not convex and therefore, infinitely many measures that are invariant under the classical harmonic os…
The eigenfunction expansion by Gegenbauer polynomials for the diffusion on a hypersphere is transformed into the diffusion for the Wright-Fisher model with a particular mutation rate. We use the Ito calculus considering stochastic differential equations. The expansion gives a simple interpretation of the Griffiths eigenfunction expansion for the Wright-Fisher model. Our representation is useful to simulate the Wright-Fisher model as well as Brownian motion on a hypersphere.
We prove a result of delocalization for the Anderson model on the regular tree (Bethe lattice). When the disorder is weak, it is known that large parts of the spectrum are a.s. purely absolutely continuous, and that the dynamical transport is ballistic. In this work, we prove that in such AC regime, the eigenfunctions are also delocalized in space, in the sense that if we consider a sequence of regular graphs converging to the regular tree, then the eigenfunctions become asymptotically uniformly distributed. The precise result is a quantum ergodicity theorem.
We consider systems of Brownian particles in the space of positive definite matrices, which evolve independently apart from some simple interactions. We give examples of such processes which have an integrable structure. These are related to $K$-Bessel functions of matrix argument and multivariate generalisations of these functions. The latter are eigenfunctions of a particular quantisation of the non-Abelian Toda chain.
We study a lattice field model which qualitatively reflects the phenomenon of Anderson localization and delocalization for real symmetric band matrices. In this statistical mechanics model, the field takes values in a supermanifold based on the hyperbolic plane. Correlations in this model may be described in terms of a random walk in a highly correlated random environment. We prove that in three or more dimensions the model has a `diffusive' phase at low temperatures. Localization is expected at high temperatures. Our analysis uses estimates on non-uniformly elliptic Green's functions and a fa…
Using an operator-theoretic framework in a Hilbert-space setting, we perform a detailed spectral analysis of the one-dimensional Laplacian in a bounded interval, subject to specific non-self-adjoint connected boundary conditions modelling a random jump from the boundary to a point inside the interval. In accordance with previous works, we find that all the eigenvalues are real. As the new results, we derive and analyse the adjoint operator, determine the geometric and algebraic multiplicities of the eigenvalues, write down formulae for the eigenfunctions together with the generalised eigenfunc…
We study the ultrametric random matrix ensemble, whose independent entries have variances decaying exponentially in the metric induced by the tree topology on $\mathbb{N}$, and map out the entire localization regime in terms of eigenfunction localization and Poisson statistics. Our results complement existing works on complete delocalization and random matrix universality, thereby proving the existence of a phase transition in this model. In the simpler case of the Rosenzweig-Porter model, the analysis yields a complete characterization of the transition in the local statistics. The proofs are…
We use an extension of the diagrammatic rules in random matrix theory to evaluate spectral properties of finite and infinite products of large complex matrices and large hermitian matrices. The infinite product case allows us to define a natural matrix-valued multiplicative diffusion process. In both cases of hermitian and complex matrices, we observe an emergence of "topological phase transition" in the spectrum, after some critical diffusion time $τ_{\rm crit}$ is reached. In the case of the particular product of two hermitian ensembles, we observe also an unusual localization-delocalization…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the principal eigenvalue of a weakly coupled, cooperative linear elliptic system in a stationary ergodic heterogeneous medium. The system arises as the so-called multigroup diffusion model for neutron flux in nuclear reactor cores, the principal eigenvalue determining the criticality of the reactor in a stationary state. Such systems have been well-studied in recent years in the periodic setting, and the purpose of this work is to obtain results in random media. Our approach connects the linear eigenvalue problem to a system of quasilinear viscous Hamilton-J…
