We study a lattice field model which qualitatively reflects the phenomenon of Anderson localization and delocalization for real symmetric band matrices. In this statistical mechanics model, the field takes values in a supermanifold based on the hyperbolic plane. Correlations in this model may be described in terms of a random walk in a highly correlated random environment. We prove that in three or more dimensions the model has a `diffusive' phase at low temperatures. Localization is expected at high temperatures. Our analysis uses estimates on non-uniformly elliptic Green's functions and a family of Ward identities coming from internal supersymmetry.
We study a lattice sigma model which is expected to reflect the Anderson localization and delocalization transition for real symmetric band matrices in 3D. In this statistical mechanics model, the field takes values in a supermanifold based on the hyperbolic plane. The existence of a diffusive phase in 3 dimensions was proved for low temperatures. Here we prove localization at high temperatures for any dimension $d\geq 1$. Our analysis uses Ward identities coming from internal supersymmetry.
We present a characterisation of Maurer-Cartan 1-superforms associated to the two-dimensional supersymmetric $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ sigma model. We, then, solve the associated linear spectral problem and use its solutions to describe an integrable system for a $su(N)$-valued map.
By using the Poisson geometry, we develop a manifestly invariant and calculation-friendly formalism for handling $UOSp(2|1)$-supersymmetric field theories. In particular, the super-Langrangians are written solely in terms of superfields, Poisson brackets and the moment map generating the $UOSp(2|1)$ action. As an application of this formalism, we construct the Kalb-Ramond term for supersymmetric sigma models on the supersphere.
We construct explicitly classical and quantum supercharges satisfying the standard N = 4 supersymmetry algebra in the supersymmetric sigma models describing the motion over HKT (hyper-Kaehler with torsion) manifolds. One member of the family of superalgebras thus obtained is equivalent to the superalgebra derived and formulated earlier in the purely mathematical framework.
We derive and discuss, at both the classical and the quantum levels, generalized N = 2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical sigma models describing the motion over an arbitrary real or an arbitrary complex manifold with extra torsions. We analyze the relevant vacuum states to make explicit the fact that their number is not affected by adding the torsion terms.
Constant curvature surfaces are constructed from the finite action solutions of the supersymmetric $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ sigma model. It is shown that there is a unique holomorphic solution which leads to constant curvature surfaces: the generalized Veronese curve. We give a general criterion to construct non-holomorphic solutions of the model. We extend our analysis to general supersymmetric Grassmannian models.
We study the relation between the Laplacian associated to an odd metric on a supermanifold and harmonic superfunctions, through the application of the calculus of variations to a supersymmetric sigma model.
In this paper, we define an extension of the supersymmetric hyperbolic nonlinear sigma model introduced by Zirnbauer. We show that it arises as a weak joint limit of a time-changed version introduced by Sabot and Tarrès of the vertex-reinforced jump process. It describes the asymptotics of rescaled crossing numbers, rescaled fluctuations of local times, asymptotic local times on a logarithmic scale, endpoints of paths, and last exit trees.
A new approach for the construction of finite action solutions of the supersymmetric $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ sigma model is presented. We show that this approach produces more non-holomorphic solutions than those obtained in previous approaches. We study the $\mathbb{C}P^2$ model in detail and present its solutions in an explicit form. We also show how to generalise this construction to $N>3$.
We introduce a family of real random variables $(β,θ)$ arising from the supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model and containing the family $β$ introduced by Sabot, Tarrès, and Zeng [STZ17] in the context of the vertex-reinforced jump process. Using this family we construct an exponential martingale generalizing the one considered in [DMR17]. Moreover, using the full supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model we also construct a generalization of the exponential martingale involving Grassmann variables.
Using complex notation, we present new simple expressions for two pairs of complex supercharges in HKT supersymmetric sigma models. The second pair of supercharges depends on the holomorphic antisymmetric "hypercomplex structure" tensor which plays the same role for the HKT models as the complex structure tensor for the Kaehler models. When the Hamiltonian and supercharges commute with the momenta conjugate to the imaginary parts of the complex coordinates, one can perform a Hamiltonian reduction. The models thus obtained represent a special class of quasicomplex sigma models introduced recent…
We study the non-linear supersymmetric hyperbolic sigma model $H^{2|2}$ on a complete graph with hierarchical interactions. For interactions which do not decrease too fast in the hierarchical distance, we prove tightness of certain spin variables in horospherical coordinates, uniformly in the pinning and in the size of the graph. The proof relies on a reduction to an effective $H^{2|2}$ model; its size is logarithmic in the size of the original model.
We prove a vanishing result for critical points of the supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model on complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds of positive Ricci curvature that admit an Euclidean type Sobolev inequality, assuming that the dimension of the domain is bigger than two and that a certain energy is sufficiently small.
We explore the constant curvature holomorphic solutions of the supersymmetric grassmannian sigma model $G(M,N)$ using in particular the gauge invariance of the model. Supersymmetric invariant solutions are constructed via generalizing a known result for ${C}P^{N-1}$. We show that some other such solutions also exist. Indeed, considering the simplest case of $G(2,N)$ model, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for getting the constant curvature holomorphic solutions. Since, all the constant curvature holomorphic solutions of the bosonic $G(2,4)$ $σ$-model are known, we treat this example…
We study CKT (or bi-HKT) N = 4 supersymmetric quantum mechanical sigma models. They are characterized by the usual and the mirror sectors displaying each HKT geometry. When the metric involves isometries, a Hamiltonian reduction is possible. The most natural such reduction with respect to a half of bosonic target space coordinates produces an N = 4 model, related to the twisted Kaehler model due to Gates, Hull and Rocek, but including certain extra F-terms in the superfield action.
We have perturbed Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) models and also N=(2,2) supersymmetric sigma models on Lie groups by adding a term containing complex structure to their actions. Then, using non-coordinate basis, we have shown that for N=(2,2) supersymmetric sigma models on Lie groups the conditions (from the algebraic point of view) for the preservation of the N=(2,2) supersymmetry impose that the complex structure must be invariant; so only the Abelian Lie algebras admit these deformations preserving the N=(2,2) supersymmetry. Also, we have shown that the perturbed WZW model with this term, using …
We derive and discuss a new type of N=2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical sigma models which appear when the superfield action of the (1,2,1) multiplets is modified by adding an imaginary antisymmetric tensor to the target space metric, thus completing the latter to a non-symmetric Hermitian metric. These models are not equivalent to the standard de Rham sigma models, but are related to them through a certain special similarity transformation of the supercharges. On the other hand, they can be obtained by a Hamiltonian reduction from the complex supersymmetric N=2 sigma models built on the mul…
We derive conservation laws for Dirac-harmonic maps and their extensions to manifolds that have isometries, where we mostly focus on the spherical case. In addition, we discuss several geometric and analytic applications of the latter.
We prove the vertex-reinforced jump process (VRJP) is recurrent in two dimensions for any translation invariant finite range initial rates. Our proof has two main ingredients. The first is a direct connection between the VRJP and sigma models whose target space is a hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$ or its supersymmetric counterpart $\mathbb{H}^{2|2}$. These results are analogues of well-known relations between the Gaussian free field and the local times of simple random walk. The second ingredient is a Mermin--Wagner theorem for these sigma models. This result is of intrinsic interest for the s…
Novel $\mathcal{N}{=}\,2$ and $\mathcal{N}{=}\,4$ supersymmetric extensions of the Calogero-Sutherland hyperbolic systems are obtained by gauging the ${\rm U}(n)$ isometry of matrix superfield models. The bosonic core of the $\mathcal{N}{=}\,2$ models is the standard $A_{n-1}$ Calogero-Sutherland hyperbolic system, whereas the ${\mathcal N}{=}\,4$ model contains additional semi-dynamical spin variables and is an extension of the U(2) spin Calogero-Sutherland hyperbolic system. We construct two different versions of the ${\mathcal N}{=}\,4$ model, with and without the interacting center-of-mass…
We introduce a natural generalisation of holomorphic curves to morphisms of supermanifolds, referred to as holomorphic supercurves. More precisely, supercurves are morphisms from a Riemann surface, endowed with the structure of a supermanifold which is induced by a holomorphic line bundle, to an ordinary almost complex manifold. They are called holomorphic if a generalised Cauchy-Riemann condition is satisfied. We show, by means of an action identity, that holomorphic supercurves are special extrema of a supersymmetric action functional.
We discuss four off-shell N=4 D=1 supersymmetry transformations, their associated one-dimensional sigma-models and their mutual relations. They are given by I) the (4,4)_{lin} linear supermultiplet (supersymmetric extension of R^4), II) the (3,4,1)_{lin} linear supermultiplet (supersymmetric extension of R^3), III) the (3,4,1)_{nl} non-linear supermultiplet living on S^3 and IV) the (2,4,2)_{nl} non-linear supermultiplet living on S^2. The I -> II map is the supersymmetric extension of the R^4 -> R^3 bilinear map, while the II -> IV map is the supersymmetric extension of the S^3 -> S^2 first H…
In four-dimensional N=1 Minkowski superspace, general nonlinear sigma models with four-dimensional target spaces may be realised in term of CCL (chiral and complex linear) dynamical variables which consist of a chiral scalar, a complex linear scalar and their conjugate superfields. Here we introduce CCL sigma models that are invariant under U(1) "duality rotations" exchanging the dynamical variables and their equations of motion. The Lagrangians of such sigma models prove to obey a partial differential equation that is analogous to the self-duality equation obeyed by U(1) duality invariant mod…
Edge-reinforced random walk (ERRW), introduced by Coppersmith and Diaconis in 1986, is a random process, which takes values in the vertex set of a graph $G$, and is more likely to cross edges it has visited before. We show that it can be represented in terms of a Vertex-reinforced jump process (VRJP) with independent gamma conductances: the VRJP was conceived by Werner and first studied by Davis and Volkov (2002,2004), and is a continuous-time process favouring sites with more local time. We calculate, for any finite graph $G$, the limiting measure of the centred occupation time measure of VRJ…
We present a systematic study of ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric non-linear sigma models on $S^2$ with the target being a Kähler manifold. We discuss their reformulation in terms of cohomological field theory. In the cohomological formulation we use a novel version of 2D self-duality which involves a $U(1)$ action on $S^2$. In addition to the generic model we discuss the theory with target space equivariance corresponding to a supersymmetric sigma model coupled to a non-dynamical supersymmetric background gauge multiplet. We discuss the localization locus and perform a one-loop calculation aro…
We propose a correspondence between vertex operator superalgebras and families of sigma models in which the two structures are related by symmetry properties and a certain reflection procedure. The existence of such a correspondence is motivated by previous work on N=(4,4) supersymmetric non-linear sigma models on K3 surfaces and on a vertex operator superalgebra with Conway group symmetry. Here we present an example of the correspondence for N=(4,4) supersymmetric non-linear sigma models on four-tori, and compare it to the K3 case.
We construct manifestly ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric off-shell superfield actions for the HKT $d=1$ sigma models on the group manifolds U(2) and SU(3), using the harmonic $d=1$ approach. The underlying $({\bf 4, 4, 0})$ and $({\bf 4, 4, 0})\oplus({\bf 4, 4, 0})$ multiplets are described, respectively, by one and two harmonic analytic superfields $q^+$ satisfying the appropriate nonlinear harmonic constraints. The invariant actions in both cases are bilinear in the superfields. We present the corresponding superfield realizations of the U(2) and SU(3) isometries and show that in fact they are en…
Starting from the Hamiltonian formulation of supersymmetric Calogero models associated with the classical $A_n$, $B_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$ series we construct the ${\cal N}{=}\,2$ and ${\cal N}{=}\,4$ supersymmetric extensions of the their hyperbolic/trigonometric Calogero-Sutherland cousins. The bosonic core of these models are the standard Calogero-Sutherland hyperbolic/trigonometric systems.
Harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces arise from a conformally invariant variational problem. Therefore, on one hand, they are intimately connected with moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, and on the other hand, because the conformal group is noncompact, constitute a prototype for the formation of singularities, the so-called bubbles, in geometric analysis. In theoretical physics, they arise from the nonlinear $σ$-model of quantum field theory. That model possesses a supersymmetric extension, coupling a harmonic map like field with a nonlinear spinor field. In the physical model, that spinor fiel…
The Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formalisms offer two perspectives on quantum field theory. This paper sets up a framework to compare these approaches for the supersymmetric sigma model. The goal is to use techniques from physics to construct topological invariants. In brief, the Hamiltonian formalism studies positive energy representations of super annuli. This leads to a model for elliptic cohomology at the Tate curve over $\mathbb{Z}$. The Lagrangian approach studies sections of line bundles over a moduli stack of super tori. This leads to a model for ordinary cohomology valued in weak modula…
We revisit the definition of the 6j-symbols from the modular double of U_q(sl(2,R)), referred to as b-6j symbols. Our new results are (i) the identification of particularly natural normalization conditions, and (ii) new integral representations for this object. This is used to briefly discuss possible applications to quantum hyperbolic geometry, and to the study of certain supersymmetric gauge theories. We show, in particular, that the b-6j symbol has leading semiclassical asymptotics given by the volume of a non-ideal tetrahedron. We furthermore observe a close relation with the problem to qu…
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that i) the framework of elliptic hypergeometric integrals (EHIs) can be extended by input from supersymmetric gauge theory, and ii) analyzing the hyperbolic limit of the EHIs in the extended framework leads to a rich structure containing sharp mathematical problems of interest to supersymmetric quantum field theorists. Both of the above items have already been discussed in the theoretical physics literature. Item i was demonstrated by Dolan and Osborn in 2008. Item ii was discussed in the present author's Ph.D. Thesis in 2016, wherein crucial elem…
