We revisit the definition of the 6j-symbols from the modular double of U_q(sl(2,R)), referred to as b-6j symbols. Our new results are (i) the identification of particularly natural normalization conditions, and (ii) new integral representations for this object. This is used to briefly discuss possible applications to quantum hyperbolic geometry, and to the study of certain supersymmetric gauge theories. We show, in particular, that the b-6j symbol has leading semiclassical asymptotics given by the volume of a non-ideal tetrahedron. We furthermore observe a close relation with the problem to quantize natural Darboux coordinates for moduli spaces of flat connections on Riemann surfaces related to the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates. Our new integral representations finally indicate a possible interpretation of the b-6j symbols as partition functions of three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories.
Modular double of quantum group SL_q(2,R) with |q|=1 has a series of selfadjoint irreducible representations parameterized by s. Ponsot and Teschner considered a decomposition of the tensor product of two representations into irreducibles. In our paper we give more detailed derivation and some new proofs.
We study the superconformally covariant pseudodifferential symbols defined on N=2 super Riemann surfaces. This allows us to construct a primary basis for N=2 super W_KP^(n)-algebras and, by reduction, for N=2 super W_n-algebras.
We discover a modular property of supersymmetric partition functions of supersymmetric theories with R-symmetry in four dimensions. This modular property is, in a sense, the generalization of the modular invariance of the supersymmetric partition function of two-dimensional supersymmetric theories on a torus i.e. of the elliptic genus. The partition functions in question are on manifolds homeomorphic to the ones obtained by gluing solid tori. Such gluing involves the choice of a large diffeomorphism of the boundary torus, along with the choice of a large gauge transformation for the background…
We study the modular invariance of $N=2$ superconformal $SU(1,1)$ models. By decomposing the characters of Kazama-Suzuki model $SU(3)/(SU(2)\times U(1))$ into an infinite sum of the characters of $(SU(1,1)/U(1))\times U(1)$ we construct modular invariant partition functions of $(SU(1,1)/U(1))\times U(1)$.
Flux compactification of IIB string theory associates special points in Calabi-Yau moduli space to choices of (pairs of) integral three-form fluxes. In this paper, we propose that supersymmetric flux vacua are modular. That is, to a supersymmetric flux vacuum arising in a variety defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, we associate a two-dimensional Galois representation that we conjecture to be modular. We provide numerical evidence for our conjecture by examining flux vacua arising on the octic hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{4}(1,1,2,2,2)$.
In this article we show that finite perturbative corrections in non-supersymmetric strings can be understood via an interplay between modular invariance and misaligned supersymmetry. While modular invariance is known to be crucial in closed-string models, its presence and role for open strings is more subtle. Nevertheless, we argue that it leads to cancellations in physical quantities such as the one-loop cosmological constant and prevents them from diverging. In particular, we show that if the sector-averaged number of states does not grow exponentially, as predicted by misaligned supersymmet…
We present a symbolic method for organizing the representation theory of one-dimensional superalgebras. This relies on special objects, which we have called adinkra symbols, which supply tangible geometric forms to the still-emerging mathematical basis underlying supersymmetry.
A counterpart of the modular double for quantum superalgebra $\cU_q(\osp(1|2))$ is constructed by means of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. We also construct the $R$-matrix operator acting in the corresponding representations, which is expressed via quantum dilogarithm.
This article reviews some results of the SAGEX programme that have developed in the understanding of the interplay of supersymmetry and modular covariance of scattering amplitudes in type IIB superstring theory and its holographic image in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM). The first section includes the determination of exact expressions for BPS interactions in the low-energy expansion of type IIB superstring amplitudes. The second section concerns properties of a certain class of integrated correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with arbitrary classical gauge group that are …
The parallel roles of modular symmetry in ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills and in the quantum Hall effect are reviewed. In supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories modular symmetry emerges as a version of Dirac's electric -- magnetic duality. It has significant consequences for the vacuum structure of these theories, leading to a fractal vacuum which has an infinite hierarchy of related phases. In the case of ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills in 3+1 dimensions, scaling functions can be defined which are modular forms of a subgroup of the full modular group and which interpolate between va…
Inspired by 5d supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories placed on the compact space $\mathbb{S}^5$, we propose an intriguing algebraic construction for the $q$-Virasoro algebra. We show that, when multiple $q$-Virasoro "chiral" sectors have to be fused together, a natural $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{Z})$ structure arises. This construction, which we call the modular triple, is consistent with the observed triple factorization properties of supersymmetric partition functions derived from localization arguments. We also give a 2d CFT-like construction of the modular triple, and conjecture for the first tim…
This is the second part of the work where quasi-modular forms emerge from small exotic smooth $\mathbb{R}^4$'s grouped in a fixed radial family. SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theory when formulated on exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$ from the radial family, in special foliated topological limit can be described as SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theory on flat standard $\mathbb{R}^4$ with the gravitational corrections derived from coupling to ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity. Formally, quasi-modular expressions which follow the Connes-Moscovici construction of the universal Godbillon-Vey class of the codimension-1 foliation, are r…
We consider 4d supersymmetric (special) unitary $Γ$ quiver gauge theories on compact manifolds which are $T^2$ fibrations over $S^2$. We show that their partition functions are correlators of vertex operators and screening charges of the modular double version of elliptic $W_{q,t;q'}(Γ)$ algebras. We also consider a generating function of BPS surface defects supported on $T^2$ and show that it can be identified with a particular coherent state in the Fock module over the elliptic Heisenberg algebra.
We study the modular invariance of strings on pp-waves with RR-flux. We explicitly show that the one-loop partition functions of the maximally supersymmetric pp-waves and their orbifolds can be modular invariant in spite of the mass terms in the light-cone gauge. From this viewpoint, we also determine the spectrum of type 0B theory on pp-wave and discuss its gauge theory dual. Furthermore, we investigate the spectrum of a non-supersymmetric orbifold and point out its supersymmetry enhancement in the Penrose limit.
We classify a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model by discrete symmetries originating from finite modular symmetries $Γ_N$. Since all the couplings in supersymmetric theories of finite modular symmetries $Γ_N$ are described by holomorphic modular forms with even modular weights, renormalizable and non-renormalizable operators such as baryon- and/or lepton-number violating operators are severely constrained. From the modular transformation of matter multiplets with modular weight $1/M$, we find $\mathbb{Z}_{2M}$ symmetries, including the generalized baryon and lepton parities, $R$-par…
The possibility of spontaneous breaking of CP symmetry by the expectation values of orbifold moduli is investigated with particular reference to $CP$ violating phases in soft supersymmetry breaking terms. The effect of different mechanisms for stabilizing the dilaton and the form of the non-perturbative superpotential on the existence and size of these phases is studied. Models with modular symmetries which are subgroups of $PSL(2,Z)$, as well as the single overall modulus $T$ case with the full $PSL(2,Z)$ modular symmetry, are discussed. Non-perturbative superpotentials involving the absolute…
We clarify the mass dependence of the effective prepotential in N=2 supersymmetric SU(N_c) gauge theories with an arbitrary number N_f<2N_c of flavors. The resulting differential equation for the prepotential extends the equations obtained previously for SU(2) and for zero masses. It can be viewed as an exact renormalization group equation for the prepotential, with the beta function given by a modular form. We derive an explicit formula for this modular form when N_f=0, and verify the equation to 2-instanton order in the weak-coupling regime for arbitrary N_f and N_c.
We study (4,4) supersymmetric field theories in two dimensions with a one dimensional Coulomb branch. These theories have applications in string theory. Our analysis explains the known relation between $A-D-E$ groups and modular invariants of affine SU(2).
This note focuses on some properties and uses of filtered deformations in the context of D=11 supergravity. We define the concept of abstract symbol and give a strong version of the Reconstruction Theorem, namely a bijective correspondence from the space of highly supersymmetric supergravity backgrounds to the space of abstract symbols. We propose a general strategy to construct highly supersymmetric supergravity backgrounds and present an example in detail, which includes the computation of the ideal generated by the Killing spinors of two known pp-wave backgrounds with N=24 supersymmetry. Fi…
The particle spectrum of the supersymmetric extension of the standard model with a gauge singlet is studied. Soft supersymmetry breaking terms are explicitly chosen to be non-universal according to orbifold string theory. they depend on modular weights of chiral fields and on an angle $θ$ specifying the supersymmetry breaking sector. Imposing radiative weak symmetry breaking and requiring that standard model Yukawa couplings should be allowed yield constraints on modular weights and almost specifies the angle $θ$. We then perform a numerical anlysis of the low energy spectrum. It turns out tha…
Motivated from unified models with string origin, we analyse the constraints from duality invariance on effective supergravity models with an intermediate gauge symmetry. Requiring vanishing vacuum energy and invariance of the superpotential couplings, we find that modular weights of the matter and higgs fields are subject to various constraints. In addition, the vacuum expectation values of the higgs fields breaking the intermediate gauge group, are determined in terms of their modular weights and the moduli. We also examine the possibility of breaking the intermediate gauge symmetry radiativ…
We analyze four- and six-derivative couplings in the low energy effective action of $D=3$ string vacua with half-maximal supersymmetry. In analogy with an earlier proposal for the $(\nablaΦ)^4$ coupling, we propose that the $\nabla^2(\nablaΦ)^4$ coupling is given exactly by a manifestly U-duality invariant genus-two modular integral. In the limit where a circle in the internal torus decompactifies, the $\nabla^2(\nablaΦ)^4$ coupling reduces to the $D^2 F^4$ and $R^2 F^2$ couplings in $D=4$, along with an infinite series of corrections of order $e^{-R}$, from four-dimensional 1/4-BPS dyons whos…
We propose a new and elegant formula for the Racah-Wigner symbol of self-dual continuous series of representations of Uq(osp(1|2)). It describes the entire fusing matrix for both NS and R sector of N=1 supersymmetric Liouville field theory. In the NS sector, our formula is related to an expression derived in [1]. Through analytic continuation in the spin variables, our universal expression reproduces known formulas for the Racah-Wigner coefficients of finite dimensional representations.
We construct d=4,N=1 orientifolds of Gepner models with just the chiral spectrum of the standard model. We consider all simple current modular invariants of c=9 tensor products of N=2 minimal models. For some very specific tensor combinations, and very specific modular invariants and orientifold projections, we find a large number of such spectra. We allow for standard model singlet (dark) matter and non-chiral exotics. The Chan-Paton gauge group is either U(3) x Sp(2) x U(1) x U(1) or U(3) x U(2) x U(1) x U(1). In many cases the standard model hypercharge U(1) has no coupling to RR 2-forms an…
We revisit the question of gauge coupling unification at the string scale in orbifold compactifications of the heterotic string for the supersymmetric Standard Model. In the presence of discrete Wilson lines threshold corrections with modular symmetry that is a subgroup of the full modular group arise. We find that reduced modular symmetries not previously reported are possible. We conjecture that the effects of such threshold corrections can be simulated using sums of terms built from Dedekind eta functions to obtain the appropriate modular symmetry. For the cases of the Z_8-I orbifold and th…
We present a construction of modular invariant partition functions for heterotic (0,2) supersymmetric classical string vacua. This generalization of Gepner's construction yields GUT gauge groups E_6, SO(10), SU(5) and SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1)^r, respectively. By calculating the massless spectrum of some of these models we find strong indications that they correspond to (0,2) string vacua discussed recently in the context of CYM/LG phases.
Vafa-Witten (VW) theory is a topologically twisted version of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. S-duality suggests that the partition function of VW theory with gauge group SU(N) transforms as a modular form under duality transformations. Interestingly, Vafa and Witten demonstrated the presence of a modular anomaly, when the theory has gauge group SU(2) and is considered on the complex projective plane P2. This modular anomaly could be expressed as an integral of a modular form, and also be traded for a holomorphic anomaly. We demonstrate that the modular anomaly for gauge group SU(3) invo…
