We study the eigenvectors of generalized Wigner matrices with subexponential entries and prove that they delocalize at the optimal rate with overwhelming probability. We also prove high probability delocalization bounds with sharp constants. Our proof uses an analysis of the eigenvector moment flow introduced by Bourgade and Yau (2017) to bound logarithmic moments of eigenvector entries for random matrices with small Gaussian components. We then extend this control to all generalized Wigner matrices by comparison arguments based on a framework of regularized eigenvectors, level repulsion, and the observable employed by Landon, Lopatto, and Marcinek (2018) to compare extremal eigenvalue statistics. Additionally, we prove level repulsion and eigenvalue overcrowding estimates for the entire spectrum, which may be of independent interest.
We prove a local law and eigenvector delocalization for general Wigner-type matrices. Our methods allow us to get the best possible interval length and optimal eigenvector delocalization in the dense case, and the first results of such kind for the sparse case down to $p=\frac{g(n)\log n}{n}$ with $g(n)\to\infty$. We specialize our results to the case of the Stochastic Block Model, and we also obtain a local law for the case when the number of classes is unbounded.
We consider Hermitian random matrices of the form $H = W + λV$, where $W$ is a Wigner matrix and $V$ a diagonal random matrix independent of $W$. We assume subexponential decay for the matrix entries of $W$ and we choose $λ\sim 1$ so that the eigenvalues of $W$ and $λV$ are of the same order in the bulk of the spectrum. In this paper, we prove for a large class of diagonal matrices $V$ that the local deformed semicircle law holds for $H$, which is an analogous result to the local semicircle law for Wigner matrices. We also prove complete delocalization of eigenvectors and other results about t…
We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrices with independent identical distributed entries. The matrix is normalized so that the average spacing between consecutive eigenvalues is of order 1/N. Under suitable assumptions on the distribution of the single matrix element, we prove that, away from the spectral edges, the density of eigenvalues concentrates around the Wigner semicircle law on energy scales $η\gg N^{-1} (\log N)^8$. Up to the logarithmic factor, this is the smallest energy scale for which the semicircle law may be valid. We also prove that for all eigenvalues away from the sp…
We prove that the eigenvectors associated to small enough eigenvalues of an heavy-tailed symmetric random matrix are delocalized with probability tending to one as the size of the matrix grows to infinity. The delocalization is measured thanks to a simple criterion related to the inverse participation ratio which computes an average ratio of L4 and L2-norms of vectors. In contrast, as a consequence of a previous result, for random matrices with sufficiently heavy tails, the eigenvectors associated to large enough eigenvalues are localized according to the same criterion. The proof is based on …
We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrices $H$ consisting of blocks of size $M\geq N^{6/7}$. The matrix elements are i.i.d. within the blocks, close to a Gaussian in the four moment matching sense, but their distribution varies from block to block to form a block-band structure, with an essential band width $M$. We show that the entries of the Green's function $G(z)=(H-z)^{-1}$ satisfy the local semicircle law with spectral parameter $z=E+\mathbf{i}η$ down to the real axis for any $η\gg N^{-1}$, using a combination of the supersymmetry method inspired by \cite{Sh2014} and the Green's fu…
We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H = (h_{xy})$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix entries $h_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in (\bZ/L\bZ)^d$, are independent, centred random variables with variances $s_{xy} = \E |h_{xy}|^2$. We assume that $s_{xy}$ is negligible if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$. In one dimension we prove that the eigenvectors of $H$ are delocalized if $W\gg L^{4/5}$. We also show that the magnitude of the matrix entries $\abs{G_{xy}}^2$ of the resolvent $G=G(z)=(H-z)^{-1}$ is self-averaging and we compute $\E \abs{G_{xy}}^2$. We show that, as $L\to\inf…
We prove that the energy of any eigenvector of a sum of several independent large Wigner matrices is equally distributed among these matrices with very high precision. This shows a particularly strong microcanonical form of the equipartition principle for quantum systems whose components are modelled by Wigner matrices.
We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix elements $H_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in Λ\subset \Z^d$, are independent and their variances satisfy $σ_{xy}^2:=\E \abs{H_{xy}}^2 = W^{-d} f((x - y)/W)$ for some probability density $f$. We assume that the law of each matrix element $H_{xy}$ is symmetric and exhibits subexponential decay. We prove that the time evolution of a quantum particle subject to the Hamiltonian $H$ is diffusive on time scales $t\ll W^{d/3}$. We also show that the localization length of the eigenvectors of $H$ is larger than …
We prove the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta conjecture at fixed energy in the bulk of the spectrum for generalized symmetric and Hermitian Wigner matrices. Previous results concerning the universality of random matrices either require an averaging in the energy parameter or they hold only for Hermitian matrices if the energy parameter is fixed. We develop a homogenization theory of the Dyson Brownian motion and show that microscopic universality follows from mesoscopic statistics.
We extend the random characteristics approach to Wigner matrices whose entries are not required to have a normal distribution. As an application, we give a simple and fully dynamical proof of the weak local semicircle law in the bulk.
We study the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of Gaussian divisible Hermitian Wigner matrices. These random matrices are obtained by adding an independent GUE matrix to an Hermitian random matrix with independent elements, a Wigner matrix. We prove that Tracy-Widom universality holds at the edge in this class of random matrices under the optimal moment condition that there is a uniform bound on the fourth moment of the matrix elements. Furthermore, we show that universality holds in the bulk for Gaussian divisible Wigner matrices if we just assume finite second moments.
We prove that any finite collection of quadratic forms (overlaps) of general deterministic matrices and eigenvectors of an $N\times N$ Wigner matrix has joint Gaussian fluctuations. This can be viewed as the random matrix analogue of the Berry random wave conjecture.
Consider an $N\times N$ hermitian random matrix with independent entries, not necessarily Gaussian, a so called Wigner matrix. It has been conjectured that the local spacing distribution, i.e. the distribution of the distance between nearest neighbour eigenvalues in some part of the spectrum is, in the limit as $N\to\infty$, the same as that of hermitian random matrices from GUE. We prove this conjecture for a certain subclass of hermitian Wigner matrices.
It is a classical result of Wigner that for an hermitian matrix with independent entries on and above the diagonal, the mean empirical eigenvalue distribution converges weakly to the semicircle law as matrix size tends to infinity. In this paper, we prove analogs of Wigner's theorem for random matrices taken from all infinitesimal versions of classical symmetric spaces. This is a class of models which contains those studied by Wigner and Dyson, along with seven others arising in condensed matter physics. Like Wigner's, our results are universal in that they only depend on certain assumptions a…
We prove local laws, i.e. optimal concentration estimates for arbitrary products of resolvents of a Wigner random matrix with deterministic matrices in between. We find that the size of such products heavily depends on whether some of the deterministic matrices are traceless. Our estimates correctly account for this dependence and they hold optimally down to the smallest possible spectral scale.
We prove a CLT for spectra of submatrices of real symmetric and Hermitian Wigner matrices. We show that if in the standard normalization the fourth moment of the off-digonal entries is GOE/GUE-like then the limiting Gaussian process can be viewed as a collection of simply yet nontrivially correlated two-dimensional Gaussian Free Fields.
We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the second-order correlation function of the characteristic polynomial of a Hermitian Wigner matrix at the edge of the spectrum. We show that the suitably rescaled second-order correlation function is asymptotically given by the Airy kernel, thereby generalizing the well-known result for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE). Moreover, we obtain similar results for real-symmetric Wigner matrices.
We prove that an n by n random matrix G with independent entries is completely delocalized. Suppose the entries of G have zero means, variances uniformly bounded below, and a uniform tail decay of exponential type. Then with high probability all unit eigenvectors of G have all coordinates of magnitude O(n^{-1/2}), modulo logarithmic corrections. This comes a consequence of a new, geometric, approach to delocalization for random matrices.
We study large Wigner random matrices in the case when the marginal distributions of matrix entries have heavy tails. We prove that the largest eigenvalues of such matrices have Poisson statistics.
We prove that the linear statistics of the eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix converge to a universal Gaussian process on all mesoscopic spectral scales, i.e. scales larger than the typical eigenvalue spacing and smaller than the global extent of the spectrum.
We introduce kernel estimators for the semicircle law. In this first part of our general theory on the estimators, we prove the consistency and conduct simulation study to show the performance of the estimators. We also point out that Wigner's semicircle law for our new estimators and the classical empirical spectral distributions is still true when the elements of Wigner matrices don't have finite variances but are in the domain of attraction of normal law.
We consider ensembles of $N \times N$ Hermitian Wigner matrices, whose entries are (up to the symmetry constraints) independent and identically distributed random variables. Assuming sufficient regularity for the probability density function of the entries, we show that the expectation of the density of states on {\it arbitrarily} small intervals converges to the semicircle law, as $N$ tends to infinity.
We consider two classical ensembles of the random matrix theory: the Wigner matrices and sample covariance matrices, and prove Central Limit Theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics under rather weak (comparing with results known before) conditions on the number of derivatives of the test functions and also on the number of the entries moments. Moreover, we develop a universal method which allows one to obtain automatically the bounds for the variance of differentiable test functions, if there is a bound for the variance of the trace of the resolvent of random matrix. The method is applicable …
Improving upon results of Rudelson and Vershynin, we establish delocalization bounds for eigenvectors of independent-entry random matrices. In particular, we show that with high probability every eigenvector is delocalized, meaning any subset of its coordinates carries an appropriate proportion of its mass. Our results hold for random matrices with genuinely complex as well as real entries. In both cases, our bounds match numerical simulations, up to lower order terms, indicating the optimality of our results. As an application of our methods, we also establish delocalization bounds for normal…
Let $x \in S^{n-1}$ be a unit eigenvector of an $n \times n$ random matrix. This vector is delocalized if it is distributed roughly uniformly over the real or complex sphere. This intuitive notion can be quantified in various ways. In these lectures, we will concentrate on the no-gaps delocalization. This type of delocalization means that with high probability, any non-negligible subset of the support of $x$ carries a non-negligible mass. Proving the no-gaps delocalization requires establishing small ball probability bounds for the projections of random vector. Using Fourier transform, we will…
For the eigenvalues of principal submatrices of stochastically evolving Wigner matrices, we construct and study the edge scaling limit: a random decreasing sequence of continuous functions of two variables, which at every point has the distribution of the Airy point process. The analysis is based on the methods developed by Soshnikov to study the extreme eigenvalues of a single Wigner matrix.
We propose a boundary regularity condition for the $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued subordination functions in free probability to prove the local limit theorem and delocalization of eigenvectors for polynomials in two random matrices. We prove this through estimating the pair of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued approximate subordination functions for the sum of two $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued random matrices $γ_1\otimes C_N+γ_2\otimes U_N^*D_NU_N$, where $C_N$, $D_N$ are deterministic diagonal matrices, and $U_N$ is Haar unitary.
We prove that with high probability, every eigenvector of a random matrix is delocalized in the sense that any subset of its coordinates carries a non-negligible portion of its $\ell_2$ norm. Our results pertain to a wide class of random matrices, including matrices with independent entries, symmetric and skew-symmetric matrices, as well as some other naturally arising ensembles. The matrices can be real and complex; in the latter case we assume that the real and imaginary parts of the entries are independent.
We show that matrix elements of functions of $N\times N$ Wigner matrices fluctuate on a scale of order $N^{-1/2}$ and we identify the limiting fluctuation. Our result holds for any function $f$ of the matrix that has bounded variation and thus considerably relaxes the regularity requirement imposed in [7,11].
This paper studies the delocalized regime of an ultrametric random operator whose independent entries have variances decaying in a suitable hierarchical metric on $\mathbb{N}$. When the decay-rate of the off-diagonal variances is sufficiently slow, we prove that the spectral measures are uniformly $θ$-Hölder continuous for all $θ\in (0,1)$. In finite volumes, we prove that the corresponding ultrametric random matrices have completely extended eigenfunctions and that the local eigenvalue statistics converge in the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta universality class.
This paper is a continuation of our paper "Fluctuations of Matrix Elements of Regular Functions of Gaussian Random Matrices", J. Stat. Phys. (134), 147--159 (2009), in which we proved the Central Limit Theorem for the matrix elements of differential functions of the real symmetric random Gaussian matrices (GOE). Here we consider the real symmetric random Wigner matrices having independent (modulo symmetry conditions) but not necessarily Gaussian entries. We show that in this case the matrix elements of sufficiently smooth functions of these random matrices have in general another limiting law …
We show that the global fluctuations of spectra of GOE and GUE matrices and their principal submatrices executing Dyson's Brownian motion are Gaussian in the limit of large matrix dimensions. For nested submatrices one obtains a limiting three-dimensional generalized Gaussian process; its restrictions to two-dimensional sections that are monotone in matrix sizes and time moments coincide with the two-dimensional Gaussian Free Field with zero boundary conditions. The proof is by moment convergence, and it extends to more general Wigner matrices and their stochastic evolution.
This paper proves universality of the distribution of the smallest and largest gaps between eigenvalues of generalized Wigner matrices, under some smoothness assumption for the density of the entries. The proof relies on the Erd{\H o}s-Schlein-Yau dynamic approach. We exhibit a new observable that satisfies a stochastic advection equation and reduces local relaxation of the Dyson Brownian motion to a maximum principle. This observable also provides a simple and unified proof of universality in the bulk and at the edge, which is quantitative. To illustrate this, we give the first explicit rate …
In this paper, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for Tracy-Widom law of Wigner matrices. Consider $N \times N$ symmetric Wigner matrices $H$ with $H_{ij} = N^{-1/2} x_{ij}$, whose upper right entries $x_{ij}$ $(1\le i< j\le N)$ are $i.i.d.$ random variables with distribution $μ$ and diagonal entries $x_{ii}$ $(1\le i\le N)$ are $i.i.d.$ random variables with distribution $\wt μ$. The means of $μ$ and $\wt μ$ are zero, the variance of $μ$ is 1, and the variance of $\wt μ$ is finite. We prove that Tracy-Widom law holds if and only if $\lim_{s\to \infty}s^4\p(|x_{12}| \ge s)=0$. The s…
In this note, we extend the results about the fluctuations of the matrix entries of regular functions of Wigner random matrices obtained in arXiv:1103.3731 [math.PR] to Wigner matrices with non-i.i.d. entries provided certain Lindeberg type conditions for the fourth moments of the off-diagonal entries and the second moments of the diagonal entries are satisfied. In addition, we relax our conditions on the test functions and require that for some $s>3 \ \int (1+|k|)^{2s}\*|\hat{f}(k)|^2 \* dk <\infty.$
We consider the quadratic form of a general deterministic matrix on the eigenvectors of an $N\times N$ Wigner matrix and prove that it has Gaussian fluctuation for each bulk eigenvector in the large $N$ limit. The proof is a combination of the energy method for the Dyson Brownian motion inspired by [Marcinek, Yau 2020] and our recent multi-resolvent local laws [Cipolloni, Erdős, Schröder 2020].
We prove universality at the edge for rescaled correlation functions of Wigner random matrices in the limit $n\to +\infty$. As a corollary, we show that, after proper rescaling, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. eigenvalues of Wigner random hermitian (resp. real symmetric) matrix weakly converge to the distributions established by Tracy and Widom in G.U.E. (G.O.E.) cases.
We consider ensembles of Wigner matrices, whose entries are (up to the symmetry constraints) independent and identically distributed random variables. We show the convergence of the Stieltjes transform towards the Stieltjes transform of the semicircle law on optimal scales and with the optimal rate. Our bounds improve previous results, in particular from [22,10], by removing the logarithmic corrections. As applications, we establish the convergence of the eigenvalue counting functions with the rate $(\log N)/N$ and the rigidity of the eigenvalues of Wigner matrices on the same scale. These bou…
We study the fluctuations of the matrix entries of regular functions of Wigner random matrices in the limit when the matrix size goes to infinity. In the case of the Gaussian ensembles (GOE and GUE) this problem was considered by A.Lytova and L.Pastur in J. Stat. Phys., v.134, 147-159 (2009). Our results are valid provided the off-diagonal matrix entries have finite fourth moment, the diagonal matrix entries have finite second moment, and the test functions have four continuous derivatives in a neighborhood of the support of the Wigner semicircle law.
In this paper we consider Wigner random matrices -- symmetric n by n random matrices whose entries are independent identically distributed real random variables. We prove that the probability distribution of one or several eigenvalues close to the center of the spectrum does not depend on the probability distribution of the entries of the matrix and is the same as for the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. We make only mild smoothness assumptions on the probability distribution of the entries and assume that the probability distribution of the entries decays polynomially with sufficiently large pow…
We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian Wigner random matrices $H$ where the probability density for each matrix element is given by the density $ν(x)= e^{- U(x)}$. We prove that the eigenvalue statistics in the bulk is given by Dyson sine kernel provided that $U \in C^6(\RR)$ with at most polynomially growing derivatives and $ν(x) \le C e^{- C |x|}$ for $x$ large. The proof is based upon an approximate time reversal of the Dyson Brownian motion combined with the convergence of the eigenvalue density to the Wigner semicircle law on short scales.
These notes provide an introduction to the local semicircle law from random matrix theory, as well as some of its applications. We focus on Wigner matrices, Hermitian random matrices with independent upper-triangular entries with zero expectation and constant variance. We state and prove the local semicircle law, which says that the eigenvalue distribution of a Wigner matrix is close to Wigner's semicircle distribution, down to spectral scales containing slightly more than one eigenvalue. This local semicircle law is formulated using the Green function, whose individual entries are controlled …
We study high moments of truncated Wigner nxn random matrices by using their representation as the sums over the set W of weighted even closed walks. We construct the subset W' of W such that the corresponding sum diverges in the limit of large n and the number of moments proportional to n^{2/3} for any truncation of the order n^{1/6+epsilon}, epsilon>0 provided the probability distribution of the matrix elements is such that its twelfth moment does not exist. This allows us to put forward a hypothesis that the finiteness of the twelfth moment represents the necessary condition for the univers…
In this paper we consider $N \times N$ real generalized Wigner matrices whose entries are only assumed to have finite $(2 + \varepsilon)$-th moment for some fixed, but arbitrarily small, $\varepsilon > 0$. We show that the Stieltjes transforms $m_N (z)$ of these matrices satisfy a weak local semicircle law on the nearly smallest possible scale, when $η= \Im (z)$ is almost of order $N^{-1}$. As a consequence, we establish bulk universality for local spectral statistics of these matrices at fixed energy levels, both in terms of eigenvalue gap distributions and correlation functions, meaning that…
We study the spectral properties of the dilute Wigner random real symmetric n-dimensional matrices H such that the entries H(i,j) take zero value with probability 1-p/n. We prove that under rather general conditions on the probability distribution of H(i,j) the semicircle law is valid for the dilute Wigner ensemble in the limit of infinite n and p. In the second part of the paper we study the leading term of the correlation function of the resolvent G(z) of H with large enough Im z in the limit of infinite n and p such that 3/5 log n <log p < log n. We show that this leading term, when conside…
We prove that any deterministic matrix is approximately the identity in the eigenbasis of a large random Wigner matrix with very high probability and with an optimal error inversely proportional to the square root of the dimension. Our theorem thus rigorously verifies the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis by Deutsch [Deutsch 1991] for the simplest chaotic quantum system, the Wigner ensemble. In mathematical terms, we prove the strong form of Quantum Unique Ergodicity (QUE) with an optimal convergence rate for all eigenvectors simultaneously, generalizing previous probabilistic QUE results i…
We consider Hermitian random band matrices $H=(h_{xy})$ on the $d$-dimensional lattice $(\mathbb Z/L\mathbb Z)^d$. The entries $h_{xy}$ are independent (up to Hermitian conditions) centered complex Gaussian random variables with variances $s_{xy}=\mathbb E|h_{xy}|^2$. The variance matrix $S=(s_{xy})$ has a banded structure so that $s_{xy}$ is negligible if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$. In dimensions $d\ge 8$, we prove that, as long as $W\ge L^ε$ for a small constant $ε>0$, with high probability most bulk eigenvectors of $H$ are delocalized in the sense that their localization lengths are…
We show that the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue of a real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrix of size $N$ converge to the Tracy--Widom laws at a rate $O(N^{-1/3+ω})$, as $N$ tends to infinity. For Wigner matrices this improves the previous rate $O(N^{-2/9+ω})$ obtained by Bourgade [5] for generalized Wigner matrices. Our result follows from a Green function comparison theorem, originally introduced by Erdős, Yau and Yin [19] to prove edge universality, on a finer spectral parameter scale with improved error estimates. The proof relies on the continuous Green function flow indu…
We consider the Wigner ensemble of Hermitian n-dimensional random matrices and study the correlation function K(s',s") of their moments in the limit when the numbers s', s" of the moments are proportional to n to the power 2/3. We show that the limiting expression of K does not depend on the moments of the random matrix elements. The proof is based on a combination of the arguments by Ya. Sinai and A. Soshnikov with the detailed study of a moment analog of the Inverse Participation Ratio of the Gaussian Unitary Invariant Ensemble (GUE).
We prove a central limit theorem for the mesoscopic linear statistics of $N\times N$ Wigner matrices $H$ satisfying $\mathbb{E}|H_{ij}|^2=1/N$ and $\mathbb{E} H_{ij}^2= σ/N$, where $σ\in [-1,1]$. We show that on all mesoscopic scales $η$ ($1/N \ll η\ll 1$), the linear statistics of $H$ have a sharp transition at $1-σ\sim η$. As an application, we identify the mesoscopic linear statistics of Dyson's Brownian motion $H_t$ started from a real symmetric Wigner matrix $H_0$ at any nonnegative time $t \in [0,\infty]$. In particular, we obtain the transition from the central limit theorem for GOE to …
