A deformation of the standard prolongation operation, defined on sets of vector fields in involution rather than on single ones, was recently introduced and christened "σ-prolongation"; correspondingly one has "σ-symmetries" of differential equations. These can be used to reduce the equations under study, but the general reduction procedure under σ-symmetries fails for equations of order one. In this note we discuss how σ-symmetries can be used to reduce dynamical systems, i.e. sets of first order ODEs in the form dx^a/dt = f^a (x).
We consider generalized (possibly depending on fields as well as on space-time variables) gauge transformations and gauge symmetries in the context of general -- that is, possibly non variational nor covariant -- differential equations. In this case the relevant principal bundle admits the first jet bundle (of the phase manifold) as an associated bundle, at difference with standard Yang-Mills theories. We also show how in this context the recently introduced operation of $μ$-prolongation of vector fields (which generalizes the $\la$-prolongation of Muriel and Romero), and hence $μ$-symmetries …
I give a short review of the theory of twisted symmetries of differential equations, emphasizing geometrical aspects. Some open problems are also mentioned.
The kinematical and dynamical symmetries of equations describing the time evolution of quantum systems like the supersymmetric harmonic oscillator in one space dimension and the interaction of a non-relativistic spin one-half particle in a constant magnetic field are reviewed from the point of view of the vector field prolongation method. Generators of supersymmetries are then introduced so that we get Lie superalgebras of symmetries and supersymmetries. This approach does not require the introduction of Grassmann valued differential equations but a specific matrix realization and the concept …
We consider a deformation of the prolongation operation, defined on sets of vector fields and involving a mutual interaction in the definition of prolonged ones. This maintains the "invariants by differentiation" property, and can hence be used to reduce ODEs satisfying suitable invariance conditions in a fully algorithmic way, similarly to what happens for standard prolongations and symmetries.
We give a geometrical characterization of $λ$-prolongations of vector fields, and hence of $λ$-symmetries of ODEs. This allows an extension to the case of PDEs and systems of PDEs; in this context the central object is a horizontal one-form $μ$, and we speak of $μ$-prolongations of vector fields and $μ$-symmetries of PDEs. We show that these are as good as standard symmetries in providing symmetry reduction of PDEs and systems, and explicit invariant solutions.
An algebraic method is devised to look for non-local symmetries of the pseudopotential type of nonlinear field equations. The method is based on the use of an infinite-dimensional subalgebra of the prolongation algebra $L$ associated with the equations under consideration. Our approach, which is applied by way of example to the Dym and the Korteweg-de Vries equations, allows us to obtain a general formula for the infinitesimal operator of the non-local symmetries expressed in terms of elements of $L$. The method could be exploited to investigate the symmetry properties of other nonlinear field…
The approach to nonholonomic Ricci flows and geometric evolution of regular Lagrange systems [S. Vacaru: J. Math. Phys. \textbf{49} (2008) 043504 \& Rep. Math. Phys. \textbf{63} (2009) 95] is extended to include geometric mechanics and gravity models on Lie algebroids. We prove that such evolution scenarios of geometric mechanics and analogous gravity can be modelled as gradient flows characterized by generalized Perelman functionals if an equivalent geometrization of Lagrange mechanics [J. Kern, Arch. Math. (Basel) \textbf{25} (1974) 438] is considered. The R. Hamilton equations on Lie algebr…
Using the basic prolongation method and the infinitesimal criterion of invariance, we find the most general Lie point symmetries group of the Thomas equation. Looking the adjoint representation of the obtained symmetry group on its Lie algebra, we will find the preliminary classification of its group-invariant solutions. This latter provides a new exact solutions for the Thomas equation.
Using the lax pair, nonlocal symmetry of the coupled Hirota equation is obtained. By introducing an appropriate auxiliary dependent variable the nonlocal symmetry is successfully localized to a Lie point symmetry. For the closed prolongation, one-dimensional optimal systems and nonlocal conservation laws of the coupled Hirota equation are studied.
We investigate Lie symmetries of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations in four-dimensional Euclidean space (SDYM). The first prolongation of the symmetry generating vector fields is written down, and its action on SDYM computed. Determining equations are then obtained and solved completely. Lie symmetries of SDYM in Euclidean space are in exact correspondence with symmetries of the full Yang-Mills equations in Minkowski space.
We investigate Lie symmetries of general Yang-Mills equations. For this purpose, we first write down the second prolongation of the symmetry generating vector fields, and compute its action on the Yang-Mills equations. Determining equations are then obtained, and solved completely. Provided that Yang-Mills equations are locally solvable, this allows for a complete classification of their Lie symmetries. Symmetries of Yang-Mills equations in the Lorentz gauge are also investigated.
We investigate Lie symmetries of Einstein's vacuum equations in N dimensions, with a cosmological term. For this purpose, we first write down the second prolongation of the symmetry generating vector fields, and compute its action on Einstein's equations. Instead of setting to zero the coefficients of all independent partial derivatives (which involves a very complicated substitution of Einstein's equations), we set to zero the coefficients of derivatives that do not appear in Einstein's equations. This considerably constrains the coefficients of symmetry generating vector fields. Using the Li…
We consider an integrable system of reduced Maxwell-Bloch equations that describes the evolution of an electromagnetic field in a two-level medium that is inhomogeneously broadened. We prove that the relevant Backlund transformation preserves the reality of the n-soliton potentials and establish their pole structure with respect to the broadening parameter. The natural phase space of the model is embedded in an infinite dimensional loop algebra. The dynamical equations of the model are associated to an infinite family of higher order Hamiltonian systems that are in involution. We present the H…
In this paper, based on the Fokas, Gel'fand et al approach [15,16], we provide a symmetry characterization of continuous deformations of soliton surfaces immersed in a Lie algebra using the formalism of generalized vector fields, their prolongation structure and links with the Fréchet derivatives. We express the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of such surfaces in terms of the invariance criterion for generalized symmetries and identify additional sufficient conditions which admit an explicit integration of the immersion functions of 2D surfaces in Lie algebras. We discuss …
We provide a general theoretical framework allowing us to extend the classical Lie theory for partial differential equations to the case of equations of fractional order. We propose a general prolongation formula for the study of Lie symmetries in the case of an arbitrary finite number of independent variables. We also prove the Lie theorem in the case of fractional differential equations, showing that the proper space for the analysis of these symmetries is the infinite dimensional jet space.
We carry out an extensive investigation of conservation laws and potential symmetries for the class of linear (1+1)-dimensional second-order parabolic equations. The group classification of this class is revised by employing admissible transformations, the notion of normalized classes of differential equations and the adjoint variational principle. All possible potential conservation laws are described completely. They are in fact exhausted by local conservation laws. For any equation from the above class the characteristic space of local conservation laws is isomorphic to the solution set of …
We propose a method to construct first integrals of a dynamical system, starting with a given set of independent infinitesimal symmetries. In the case of two infinitesimal symmetries, a rank two Poisson structure on the ambient space it is found, such that the vector field that generates the dynamical system, becomes a Poisson vector field. Moreover, the symplectic leaves and the Casimir functions of the associated Poisson manifold are characterized. Explicit conditions that guarantee Hamilton-Poisson realizations of the dynamical system are also given.
It is shown that, under suitable conditions, involving in particular the existence of analytic constants of motion, the presence of Lie point symmetries can ensure the convergence of the transformation taking a vector field (or dynamical system) into normal form
It's well known that Noether symmetries lead to the conservation laws. Conserved quantities are constructed out of generator of the symmetry - invariant Hamiltonian vector field. Considering more general class of vector fields - non-Hamiltonian ones leads to the notion of non-Noether symmetry and conservation laws (Lutzky's integrals of motion) with interesting properties. In the present paper correspondence between non-Noether symmetries and conserved quantities in different types of dynamical systems (DS on symplectic, presymplectic and Poisson manifolds) is considered.
We realize the simple Lie superalgebra G(3) as supersymmetry of various geometric structures, most importantly super-versions of the Hilbert-Cartan equation (SHC) and Cartan's involutive PDE system that exhibit G(2) symmetry. We provide the symmetries explicitly and compute, via the first Spencer cohomology groups, the Tanaka-Weisfeiler prolongation of the negatively graded Lie superalgebras associated with two particular choices of parabolics. We discuss non-holonomic superdistributions with growth vector (2|4,1|2,2|0) deforming the flat model SHC, and prove that the second Spencer cohomology…
We review how an algebraic formulation for the dynamics of a physical system allows to describe a reduction procedure for both classical and quantum evolutions.
Ermakov systems possessing Noether point symmetry are identified among the Ermakov systems that derive from a Lagrangian formalism and, the Ermakov invariant is shown to result from an associated symmetry of dynamical character. The Ermakov invariant and the associated Noether invariant, are sufficient to reduce these systems to quadratures.
We discuss geometric properties of non-Noether symmetries and their possible applications in integrable Hamiltonian systems. Correspondence between non-Noether symmetries and conservation laws is revisited. It is shown that in regular Hamiltonian systems such a symmetries canonically lead to a Lax pairs on the algebra of linear operators on cotangent bundle over the phase space. Relationship between the non-Noether symmetries and other wide spread geometric methods of generating conservation laws such as bi-Hamiltonian formalism, bidifferential calculi and Frolicher-Nijenhuis geometry is consi…
Several dynamical symmetries of the Dirac Hamiltonian are reviewed in a systematic manner and the conditions under which such symmetries hold. These include relativistic spin and orbital angular momentum symmetries, SO(4)\times SU_σ(2) symmetry for the Dirac Hydrogen atom, SU(3)\times SU_σ(2) symmetry for the relativistic simple harmonic oscillator. The energy spectrum in each case is calculated from group-theoretic considerations.
The strict connection between Lie point-symmetries of a dynamical system and its constants of motion is discussed and emphasized, through old and new results. It is shown in particular how the knowledge of a symmetry of a dynamical system can allow to obtain conserved quantities which are invariant under the symmetry. In the case of Hamiltonian dynamical systems it is shown that, if the system admits a symmetry of "weaker" type (specifically, a λ or a Λ-symmetry), then the generating function of the symmetry is not a conserved quantity, but the deviation from the exact conservation is "control…
After a brief survey of the definition and the properties of Lambda-symmetries in the general context of dynamical systems, the notion of "Lambda-constant of motion'' for Hamiltonian equations is introduced. If the Hamiltonian problem is derived from a Lambda-invariant Lagrangian, it is shown how the Lagrangian Lambda-invariance can be transferred into the Hamiltonian context and shown that the Hamiltonian equations turn out to be Lambda-symmetric. Finally, the "partial'' (Lagrangian) reduction of the Euler-Lagrange equations is compared with the reduction obtained for the corresponding Hamilt…
A prepotential approach to constructing the quantum systems with dynamical symmetry is proposed. As applications, we derive generalizations of the hydrogen atom and harmonic oscillator, which can be regarded as the systems with position-dependent mass. They have the symmetries which are similar to the corresponding ones, and can be solved by using the algebraic method.
We consider discrete dynamical systems and lattice models in statistical mechanics from the point of view of their symmetry groups. We describe a C program for symmetry analysis of discrete systems. Among other features, the program constructs and investigates phase portraits of discrete dynamical systems modulo groups of their symmetries, searches dynamical systems possessing specific properties, e.g., reversibility, computes microcanonical partition functions and searches phase transitions in mesoscopic systems. Some computational results and observations are presented. In particular, we exp…
We present a new method based on Lie symmetries and Jacobi last multipliers which allows one to find many non-standard Lagrangians for dissipative dynamical systems. In particular, it is demonstrated that for every non-standard Lagrangian one can generate a new non-standard Lagrangian associated to a new equation of motion. We point out that the knowledge of Lie symmetries for a given dynamical system generates Jacobi last multipliers which can be used to obtain new non-standard Lagrangians for dissipative dynamical systems in a simple and straightforward way. We exemplify the new method by ap…
Invariance properties of classes in the variational sequence suggested to Krupka et al. the idea that there should exist a close correspondence between the notions of variationality of a differential form and invariance of its exterior derivative. It was shown by them that the invariance of a closed Helmholtz form of a dynamical form is equivalent with local variationality of the Lie derivative of the dynamical form, so that the latter is locally the Euler--Lagrange form of a Lagrangian. We show that the corresponding local system of Euler--Lagrange forms is variationally equivalent to a globa…
Classification of differential-difference equation of the form $\ddot{u}_{nm}=F_{nm}\big(t, \{u_{pq}\}|_{(p,q)\in Γ}\big)$ are considered according to their Lie point symmetry groups. The set $Γ$ represents the point $(n,m)$ and its six nearest neighbors in a two-dimensional triangular lattice. It is shown that the symmetry group can be at most 12-dimensional for abelian symmetry algebras and 13-dimensional for nonsolvable symmetry algebras.
In general, a system of differential equations is integrable if there exist `sufficiently many' first integrals (FIs) so that its solution can be found by means of quadratures. Therefore, the determination of the FIs is an important issue in order to establish the integrability of a dynamical system. In this work, we consider holonomic autonomous dynamical systems defined by equations $\ddot{q}^{a}= -Γ_{bc}^{a}(q) \dot{q}^{b}\dot{q}^{c} -Q^{a}(q)$ where $Γ^{a}_{bc}(q)$ are the coefficients of a symmetric (possibly non-metrical) connection and $-Q^{a}(q)$ are the generalized forces. We prove a …
We prove two general theorems which determine the Lie and the Noether point symmetries for the equations of motion of a dynamical system which moves in a general Riemannian space under the action of a time dependent potential $W(t,x)=ω(t)V(x)$. We apply the theorems to the case of a time dependent central potential and the harmonic oscillator and determine all Lie and Noether point symmetries. Finally we prove that these theorems also apply to the case of a dynamical system with linear dumping and study two examples.
We investigate the existence of Liouville integrable cosmological models in hybrid metric-Palatini theory. Specifically we use the symmetry conditions for the existence of quadratic in the momentum conservation laws for the field equations as constraint conditions for the determination of the unknown functional form of the theory. The exact and analytic solutions of the integrable systems which found in this study are presented in terms of quadratics and Laurent expansions.
Dynamical symmetries of the collisionless Boltzmann transport equation, or Vlasov equation, but under the influence of an external driving force, are derived from non-standard representations of the $2D$ conformal algebra. In the case without external forces, the symmetry of the conformally invariant transport equation is first generalised by considering the particle momentum as an independent variables. This new conformal representation can be further extended to include an external force. The construction and possible physical applications are outlined.
We prove two theorems which relate the Lie point symmetries and the Noether symmetries of a dynamical system moving in a Riemannian space with the special projective group and the homothetic group of the space respectively. The theorems are applied to classify the two dimensional Newtonian dynamical systems, which admit a Lie point/Noether symmetry. Two cases are considered, the non-conservative and the conservative forces. The use of the results is demonstrated for the Kepler - Ermakov system, which in general is non-conservative and for potentials similar to the Hènon Heiles potential. Final…
We generalize the differential representation of the operators of the Galilean algebras to include fractional derivatives. As a result a whole new class of scale invariant Galilean algebras are obtained. The first member of this class has dynamical index $z=2$ similar to the Schrödinger algebra. The second member of the class has dynamical index $z=3/2$, which happens to be the dynamical index Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.
We derive the Lie and the Noether conditions for the equations of motion of a dynamical system in a $n-$dimensional Riemannian space. We solve these conditions in the sense that we express the symmetry generating vectors in terms of the special projective and the homothetic vectors of the space. Therefore the Lie and the Noether symmetries for these equations are geometric symmetries or, equivalently, the geometry of the space is modulating the motion of dynamical systems in that space. We give two theorems which contain all the necessary conditions which allow one to determine the Lie and the…
Nonlinear realizations of the SO(4,2) group are discussed from the point of view of symmetries. Dynamical symmetry breaking is introduced. One linear and one quadratic model in curvature are constructed. Coherent states of the Klauder-Perelomov type are defined for both cases taking into account the coset geometry. A new spontaneous compactification mechanism is defined in the subspace invariant under the stability subgroup. The physical implications of the symmetry rupture in the context of non-linear realizations and direct gauging are analyzed and briefly discussed.
Conditional and Lie symmetries of semi-linear 1D Schrödinger and diffusion equations are studied if the mass (or the diffusion constant) is considered as an additional variable. In this way, dynamical symmetries of semi-linear Schrödinger equations become related to the parabolic and almost-parabolic subalgebras of a three-dimensional conformal Lie algebra conf_3. We consider non-hermitian representations and also include a dimensionful coupling constant of the non-linearity. The corresponding representations of the parabolic and almost-parabolic subalgebras of conf_3 are classified and the co…
We briefly review the possible Poisson structures on the chiral WZNW phase space and discuss the associated Poisson-Lie groupoids. Many interesting dynamical r-matrices appear naturally in this framework. Particular attention is paid to the special cases in which these r-matrices satisfy the classical dynamical Yang-Baxter equation or its Poisson-Lie variant.
The $D$-dimensional Smorodinsky-Winternitz system, proposed some years ago by Evans, is re-examined from an algebraic viewpoint. It is shown to possess a potential algebra, as well as a dynamical potential one, in addition to its known symmetry and dynamical algebras. The first two are obtained in hyperspherical coordinates by introducing $D$ auxiliary continuous variables and by reducing a 2D-dimensional harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. The su(2D) symmetry and ${\rm w}(2D) \oplus_s {\rm sp}(4D,{\mathbb R})$ dynamical algebras of this Hamiltonian are then transformed into the searched for pote…
Dynamical symmetries are of considerable importance in elucidating the complex behaviour of strongly interacting systems with many degrees of freedom. Paradigmatic examples are cooperative phenomena as they arise in phase transitions, where conformal invariance has led to enormous progress in equilibrium phase transitions, especially in two dimensions. Non-equilibrium phase transitions can arise in much larger portions of the parameter space than equilibrium phase transitions. The state of the art of recent attempts to generalise conformal invariance to a new generic symmetry, taking into acco…
We define affine transport lifts on the tangent bundle by associating a transport rule for tangent vectors with a vector field on the base manifold. The aim is to develop tools for the study of kinetic/ dynamical symmetries in relativistic particle motion. The transport lift unifies and generalises the various existing lifted vector fields, with clear geometric interpretations. We find the affine dynamical symmetries of free particle motion, and compare this to previous results and to the alternative concept of "matter symmetry".
We discuss hidden symmetries of M-theory, its feedback on the construction of the M-theory effective action, and a response of the effective action when locality is preserved. In particular, the locality of special symmetries of the duality-symmetric linearized gravity constraints the index structure of the dual to graviton field in the same manner as it is required to separate the levels 0 and 1 generators subalgebra from the infinite-dimensional hidden symmetry algebra of gravitational theory. This conclusion fails once matter fields are taken into account and we give arguments for that. We …
In a higher-order modified teleparallel theory cosmological we present analytical cosmological solutions. In particular we determine forms of the unknown potential which drives the scalar field such that the field equations form a Liouville integrable system. For the determination of the conservation laws we apply the Cartan symmetries. Furthermore, inspired from our solutions, a toy model is studied and it is shown that it can describe the Supernova data, while at the same time introduces dark matter components in the Hubble function. When the extra matter source is a stiff fluid then we show…
We propose to use dynamical symmetries of the field equations, in order to classify the dark energy models in the context of scalar field (quintessence or phantom) FLRW cosmologies. Practically, symmetries provide a useful mathematical tool in physical problems since they can be used to simplify a given system of differential equations as well as to determine the integrability of the physical system. The requirement that the field equations admit dynamical symmetries results in two potentials one of which is the well known Unified Dark Matter (UDM) potential and another new potential. For each…

In this work, we show how states with conserved numbers of dynamical defects (strings, domain walls, etc.) can be understood as possessing generalised global symmetries even when the microscopic origins of these symmetries are unknown. Using this philosophy, we build an effective theory of a $2+1$-dimensional fluid state with two perpendicular sets of immersed elastic line defects. When the number of defects is independently conserved in each set, then the state possesses two one-form symmetries. Normally, such viscoelastic states are described as fluids coupled to Goldstone bosons associated …
