We consider generalized (possibly depending on fields as well as on space-time variables) gauge transformations and gauge symmetries in the context of general -- that is, possibly non variational nor covariant -- differential equations. In this case the relevant principal bundle admits the first jet bundle (of the phase manifold) as an associated bundle, at difference with standard Yang-Mills theories. We also show how in this context the recently introduced operation of $μ$-prolongation of vector fields (which generalizes the $\la$-prolongation of Muriel and Romero), and hence $μ$-symmetries of differential equations, arise naturally. This is turn suggests several directions for further development. S0ome detailed examples are also given.
I give a short review of the theory of twisted symmetries of differential equations, emphasizing geometrical aspects. Some open problems are also mentioned.
We consider a deformation of the prolongation operation, defined on sets of vector fields and involving a mutual interaction in the definition of prolonged ones. This maintains the "invariants by differentiation" property, and can hence be used to reduce ODEs satisfying suitable invariance conditions in a fully algorithmic way, similarly to what happens for standard prolongations and symmetries.
A deformation of the standard prolongation operation, defined on sets of vector fields in involution rather than on single ones, was recently introduced and christened "σ-prolongation"; correspondingly one has "σ-symmetries" of differential equations. These can be used to reduce the equations under study, but the general reduction procedure under σ-symmetries fails for equations of order one. In this note we discuss how σ-symmetries can be used to reduce dynamical systems, i.e. sets of first order ODEs in the form dx^a/dt = f^a (x).
Using the lax pair, nonlocal symmetry of the coupled Hirota equation is obtained. By introducing an appropriate auxiliary dependent variable the nonlocal symmetry is successfully localized to a Lie point symmetry. For the closed prolongation, one-dimensional optimal systems and nonlocal conservation laws of the coupled Hirota equation are studied.
In this paper, based on the Fokas, Gel'fand et al approach [15,16], we provide a symmetry characterization of continuous deformations of soliton surfaces immersed in a Lie algebra using the formalism of generalized vector fields, their prolongation structure and links with the Fréchet derivatives. We express the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of such surfaces in terms of the invariance criterion for generalized symmetries and identify additional sufficient conditions which admit an explicit integration of the immersion functions of 2D surfaces in Lie algebras. We discuss …
We provide a general theoretical framework allowing us to extend the classical Lie theory for partial differential equations to the case of equations of fractional order. We propose a general prolongation formula for the study of Lie symmetries in the case of an arbitrary finite number of independent variables. We also prove the Lie theorem in the case of fractional differential equations, showing that the proper space for the analysis of these symmetries is the infinite dimensional jet space.
We realize the simple Lie superalgebra G(3) as supersymmetry of various geometric structures, most importantly super-versions of the Hilbert-Cartan equation (SHC) and Cartan's involutive PDE system that exhibit G(2) symmetry. We provide the symmetries explicitly and compute, via the first Spencer cohomology groups, the Tanaka-Weisfeiler prolongation of the negatively graded Lie superalgebras associated with two particular choices of parabolics. We discuss non-holonomic superdistributions with growth vector (2|4,1|2,2|0) deforming the flat model SHC, and prove that the second Spencer cohomology…
A geometric construction for obtaining a prolongation of a connection to a connection of a bundle of connections is presented. This determines a natural extension of the notion of canonical energy-tensor which suits gauge and gravitational fields, and shares the main properties of the energy-tensor of a matter field in the jet space formulation of Lagrangian field theory, in particular with regards to symmetries of the Poincaré-Cartan form. Accordingly, the joint energy-tensor for interacting matter and gauge fields turns out to be a natural geometric object, whose definition needs no auxuliar…
Tractors and Twistors bundles both provide natural conformally covariant calculi on $4D$-Riemannian manifolds. They have different origins but are closely related, and usually constructed bottom-up from prolongation of defining differential equations. We propose alternative top-down gauge theoretic constructions starting from the conformal Cartan bundle and its vectorial and spinorial associated bundles. Our key ingredient is the dressing field method of gauge symmetry reduction, which allows to exhibit tractors and twistors and their associated connections as gauge field of a non-standard kin…
Tractors and Twistors bundles both provide natural conformally covariant calculi on $4D$-Riemannian manifolds. They have different origins but are closely related, and usually constructed bottom-up through prolongation of defining differential equations. We propose alternative top-down gauge theoretic constructions, starting from the conformal Cartan bundle $¶$ and its vectorial $E$ and spinorial $\sE$ associated bundles. Our key ingredient is the dressing field method of gauge symmetry reduction, which allows to exhibit tractors and twistors and their associated connections as gauge fields of…
In this work we apply the Poincare-Cartan formalism of the Classical Field Theory to study the systems of balance equations (balance systems). We introduce the partial k-jet bundles of the configurational bundle and study their basic properties: partial Cartan structure, prolongation of vector fields, etc. A constitutive relation C of a balance system is realized as a mapping between a (partial) k-jet bundle and the extended dual bundle similar to the Legendre mapping of the Lagrangian Field Theory. Invariant (variational) form of the balance system corresponding to a constitutive relation C i…
Using the algebraic approach Lie symmetries of time dependent Schroedinger equations for charged particles interacting with superpositions of scalar and vector potentials are classified. Namely, all the inequivalent equations admitting symmetry transformations with respect to continuous groups of transformations are presented. This classification is completed and includes the specification of symmetries and admissible equivalence relations for such equations. In particular, a simple mapping between the free Schroedinger equation and the repulsive oscillator is found which has a clear group-the…
A Lagrangian formalism for variational second-order delay ordinary differential equations (DODEs) is developed. The Noether operator identity for a DODE is established, which relates the invariance of a Lagrangian function with the appropriate variational equations and the conserved quantities. The identity is used to formulate Noether-type theorems that give the first integrals for DODE with symmetries. Relations between the invariance of the variational second-order DODEs and the invariance of the Lagrangian functions are also analyzed. Several examples illustrate the theoretical results.
We discuss the relation between symmetries and conservation laws in the realm of classical field theories based on the Hamiltonian constraint. In this approach, spacetime positions and field values are treated on equal footing, and a generalized multivector-valued momentum is introduced. We derive a field-theoretic Hamiltonian version of the Noether theorem, and identify generalized Noether currents with the momentum contracted with symmetry-generating vector fields. Their relation to the traditional vectorial Noether currents is then established. Throughout, we employ the mathematical languag…
This paper is devoted to a study of the connections between three different analytic descriptions for the immersion functions of 2D-surfaces corresponding to the following three types of symmetries: gauge symmetries of the linear spectral problem, conformal transformations in the spectral parameter and generalized symmetries of the associated integrable system. After a brief exposition of the theory of soliton surfaces and of the main tool used to study classical and generalized Lie symmetries, we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the immersion formulas associated with…
This work provides a general overview for the treatment of symmetries in classical field theories and (pre)multisymplectic geometry. The geometric characteristics of the relation between how symmetries are interpreted in theoretical physics and in the geometric formulation of these theories are clarified. Finally, a general discussion is given on the structure of symmetries in the presence of constraints appearing in singular field theories. Symmetries of some typical theories in theoretical physics are analyzed through the construction of the relevant multimomentum maps which are the conserve…
Connections between set-theoretic Yang-Baxter and reflection equations and quantum integrable systems are investigated. We show that set-theoretic $R$-matrices are expressed as twists of known solutions. We then focus on reflection and twisted algebras and we derive the associated defining algebra relations for $R$-matrices being Baxterized solutions of the $A$-type Hecke algebra ${\cal H}_N(q=1)$. We show in the case of the reflection algebra that there exists a ``boundary'' finite sub-algebra for some special choice of ``boundary'' elements of the $B$-type Hecke algebra ${\cal B}_N(q=1, Q)$.…
Secondary Calculus is a formal replacement for differential calculus on the space of solutions of a system of possibly non-linear partial differential equations and it is essentially due to Alexandre M. Vinogradov and his collaborators. Many coordinate free properties of PDEs find their natural place in Secondary Calculus including: symmetries and conservation laws, variational principles and the coordinate free aspects of the calculus of variations, recursion operators and Hamiltonian structures, etc. The building blocks of this language are horizontal cohomologies of diffieties, i.e. infinit…
An algorithmic method to exploit a general class of infinitesimal symmetries for reducing stochastic differential equations is presented and a natural definition of reconstruction, inspired by the classical reconstruction by quadratures, is proposed. As a side result the well-known solution formula for linear one-dimensional stochastic differential equations is obtained within this symmetry approach. The complete procedure is applied to several examples with both theoretical and applied relevance.
A (2+1)-dimensional linear ultra-parabolic Fokker--Planck--Kolmogorov equation is investigated from the group-theoretical point of view. By using the Berest--Aksenov approach, an algebra of invariance of fundamental solutions of the equation is found. A fundamental solution of the equation under study is computed in an explicit form as a weak invariant solution.
A reduction procedure for stochastic differential equations based on stochastic symmetries including Girsanov random transformations is proposed. In this setting, a new notion of reconstruction is given, involving the expectation values of functionals of solution to the SDE and a reconstruction theorem for general stochastic symmetries is proved. Moreover, the notable case of reduction under the closed subclass of quasi Doob transformations is presented. The theoretical results are applied to stochastic models relevant in the applications.
Within the framework of algebraic quantum field theory, we propose a new method of constructing local generators of (global) gauge symmetries in field theoretic models, starting from the existence of unitary operators implementing locally the flip automorphism on the doubled theory. We show, in the simple example of the internal symmetries of a multiplet of free scalar fields, that through the pointlike limit of such local generators the conserved Wightman currents associated with the symmetries are recovered.
