In this paper, based on the Fokas, Gel'fand et al approach [15,16], we provide a symmetry characterization of continuous deformations of soliton surfaces immersed in a Lie algebra using the formalism of generalized vector fields, their prolongation structure and links with the Fréchet derivatives. We express the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of such surfaces in terms of the invariance criterion for generalized symmetries and identify additional sufficient conditions which admit an explicit integration of the immersion functions of 2D surfaces in Lie algebras. We discuss in detail the $su(N)$-valued immersion functions generated by conformal symmetries of the $CP^{N-1}$ sigma model defined on either the Minkowski or Euclidean space. We further show that the sufficient conditions for explicit integration of such immersion functions impose additional restrictions on the admissible conformal symmetries of the model defined on Minkowski space. On the other hand, the sufficient conditions are identically satisfied for arbitrary conformal symmetries of finite action solutions of the $CP^{N-1}$ sigma model defined on Euclidean space.
In this letter, we construct new meshy soliton structures by using two concrete (2+1)-dimensional integrable systems. The explicit expressions based on corresponding Cole-Hopf type transformations are obtained. Constraint equation ft+\sum_{j=1}^{N} h_j(y)f_{jx} = 0 shows that these meshy soliton structures can be linear or parabolic. Interaction between meshy soliton structure and Lump structure are also revealed.
We give a complete characterisation of the reflectionless Schrödinger operators on the line with integrable potentials, solve the inverse scattering problem of reconstructing such potentials from the eigenvalues and norming constants, and derive the corresponding generalized soliton solutions of the Korteweg--de Vries equation
In this paper, we discuss some specific features of symmetries of integrable systems which can be used to contruct the Fokas-Gel'fand formula for the immersion of 2D-soliton surfaces, associated with such systems, in Lie algebras. We establish the sufficient condition for the applicability of this formula. This condition requires the existence of two vector fields which generate a common symmetry of the initial system and its corresponding linear spectral problem. This means that these two fields have to be group-related and we determine an explicit form of this relation. It provides a criteri…
Symmetry properties are at the basis of integrability. In recent years, it appeared that so called "twisted symmetries" are as effective as standard symmetries in many respects (integrating ODEs, finding special solutions to PDEs). Here we discuss how twisted symmetries can be used to detect integrability of Lagrangian systems which are not integrable via standard symmetries.
We investigate the long-time asymptotics for the focusing integrable discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Under generic assumptions on the initial value, the solution is asymptotically a sum of 1-solitons. We find different phase shift formulas in different regions. Along rays away from solitons, the behavior of the solution is decaying oscillation. This is one way of stating the soliton resolution conjecture. The proof is based on the nonlinear steepest descent method.
We propose a systematic method for constructing integrable delay-difference and delay-differential analogues of known soliton equations such as the Lotka-Volterra, Toda lattice, and sine-Gordon equations and their multi-soliton solutions. It is carried out by applying a reduction and delay-differential limit to the discrete KP or discrete two-dimensional Toda lattice equations. Each of the delay-difference and delay-differential equations has the N-soliton solution, which depends on the delay parameter and converges to an N-soliton solution of a known soliton equation as the delay parameter ap…
The Hirota algorithm for solving several integrable nonlinear evolution equations is suggestive of a simple quantized representation of these equations and their soliton solutions over a Fock space of bosons or of fermions. The classical nonlinear wave equation becomes a nonlinear equation for an operator. The solution of this equation is constructed through the operator analog of the Hirota transformation. The classical N-solitons solution is the expectation value of the solution operator in an N-particle state in the Fock space.
In this paper, based on the nonlinear fractional equations proposed by Ablowitz, Been, and Carr in the sense of Riesz fractional derivative, we explore the fractional coupled Hirota equation and give its explicit form. Unlike the previous nonlinear fractional equations, this type of nonlinear fractional equation is integrable. Therefore, we obtain the fractional $n$-soliton solutions of the fractional coupled Hirota equation by inverse scattering transformation in the reflectionless case. In particular, we analyze the one- and two-soliton solutions of the fractional coupled Hirota equation and…
We find a transformation which relates a new third-order integrable nonlinear evolution equation, introduced recently by Qiao, with the well-known modified Korteweg - de Vries equation. Then we use this transformation to derive smooth soliton solutions of the new equation from the known rational and soliton solutions of the old one.
This paper is devoted to a study of the connections between three different analytic descriptions for the immersion functions of 2D-surfaces corresponding to the following three types of symmetries: gauge symmetries of the linear spectral problem, conformal transformations in the spectral parameter and generalized symmetries of the associated integrable system. After a brief exposition of the theory of soliton surfaces and of the main tool used to study classical and generalized Lie symmetries, we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the immersion formulas associated with…
A new three-dimensional second-order nonlinear wave equation is introduced which passes the Painleve test for integrability and possesses KdV-type multisoliton solutions. Lax integrability of this equation remains unknown.
We take a soliton solution of a classical non-linear integrable equation and quench (suddenly change) its non-linearity parameter. For that we multiply the amplitude or the width of a soliton by a numerical factor $η$ and take the obtained profile as a new initial condition. We find the values of $η$ at which the post-quench solution consists of only a finite number of solitons. The parameters of these solitons are found explicitly. Our approach is based on solving the direct scattering problem analytically. We demonstrate how it works for Kortewig-de-Vries, sine-Gordon and non-linear Schrödin…
We study exact multi-soliton solutions of integrable hierarchies on noncommutative space-times which are represented in terms of quasi-determinants of Wronski matrices by Etingof, Gelfand and Retakh. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the multi-soliton solutions and found that the asymptotic configurations in soliton scattering process can be all the same as commutative ones, that is, the configuration of N-soliton solution has N isolated localized energy densities and the each solitary wave-packet preserves its shape and velocity in the scattering process. The phase shifts are also the sam…
In this paper, we present a systematic procedure to derive discrete analogues of integrable PDEs via Hirota's bilinear method. This approach is mainly based on the compatibility between an integrable system and its Bäcklund transformation. We apply this procedure to several equations, including the extended Korteweg-de-Vries (KdV) equation, the extended Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation, the extended Boussinesq equation, the extended Sawada-Kotera (SK) equation and the extended Ito equation, and obtain their associated semi-discrete analogues. In the continuum limit, these differential-diff…
We study open spin chains based on rational sl(N) and sl(M|N) R-matrices. We classify the solutions of the reflection equations, for both the soliton-preserving and soliton-non-preserving cases. We then write the Bethe equations for these open spin chains.
We investigate the evolutionary aspects of some integrable soliton models whose Lagrangians are derived from the pullback of a volume-form to a two-dimensional target space. These models are known to have infinitely many conserved quantities and support various types of exact analytic solutions with nontrivial topology. In particular, we show that, in spite of the fact that they admit nice smooth solutions, wave propagation about these solutions will always be ill-posed. This is related to the fact that the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations are not of hyperbolic type.
We review recent developments of soliton theories and integrable systems on noncommutative spaces. The former part is a brief review of noncommutative gauge theories focusing on ADHM construction of noncommutative instantons. The latter part is a report on recent results of existence of infinite conserved quantities and exact multi-soliton solutions for noncommutative Gelfand-Dickey hierarchies. Some examples of noncommutative Ward's conjecture are also presented. Finally, we discuss future directions on noncommutative Sato's theories, twistor theories and so on.
Models that remain integrable even in confining potentials are extremely rare and almost non-existent. Here, we consider a one-dimensional hyperbolic interaction model, which we call as the Hyperbolic Calogero (HC) model. This is classically integrable even in confining potentials (which have box-like shapes). We present a first-order formulation of the HC model in an external confining potential. Using the rich property of duality, we find multi-soliton solutions of this confined integrable model. Absence of solitons correspond to the equilibrium solution of the model. We demonstrate the dyna…
The general multi-soliton solution of the integrable coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) of Manakov type is investigated by using Zakharov-Shabat (ZS) scheme. We get the bright and dark multi-soliton solution using inverse scattering method of ZS scheme. Elastic and inelastic collision of N-solitons solution of the equation are also discussed.
We investigate certain properties of $\mathfrak{su}(N)$-valued two-dimensional soliton surfaces associated with the integrable $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ sigma models constructed by the orthogonal rank-one Hermitian projectors, which are defined on the two-dimensional Riemann sphere with finite action functional. Several new properties of the projectors mapping onto one-dimensional subspaces as well as their relations with three mutually different immersion formulas, namely, the generalized Weierstrass, Sym-Tafel and Fokas-Gel'fand have been discussed in detail. Explicit connections among these three…
We propose a modified version of the Ginzburg-Landau energy functional admitting static solitons and determine all the Painlevé-integrable cases of its Bogomolny equations of a given class of models. Explicit solutions are determined in terms of the third Painlevé transcendents, allowing us to calculate physical quantities such as the vortex number and the vortex strength. These solutions can be interpreted as the usual Abelian-Higgs vortices on surfaces of non-constant curvature with conical singularity.
We present a general scheme for constructing robust excitations (soliton-like) in non-integrable multicomponent systems. By robust, we mean localised excitations that propagate with almost constant velocity and which interact cleanly with little to no radiation. We achieve this via a reduction of these complex systems to more familiar effective chiral field-theories using perturbation techniques and the Fredholm alternative. As a specific platform, we consider the generalised multicomponent Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations (MNLS) with arbitrary interaction coefficients. This non-integrable syst…
In this paper we construct explicitly an infinite number of Hopfions (static, soliton solutions with non-zero Hopf topological charges) within the recently proposed 3+1-dimensional, integrable and relativistically invariant field theory. Two integers label the family of Hopfions we have found. Their product is equal to the Hopf charge which provides a lower bound to the soliton's finite energy. The Hopfions are constructed explicitly in terms of the toroidal coordinates and shown to have a form of linked closed vortices.
We present four examples of integrable partial differential equations (PDEs) of mathematical physics that---when linearized around a stationary soliton---exhibit scattering without reflection at {\it all} energies. Starting from the most well-known and the most empirically relevant phenomenon of the transparency of one-dimensional bright bosonic solitons to Bogoliubov excitations, we proceed to the sine-Gordon, Korteweg-de Vries, and Liouville's equation whose stationary solitons also support our assertion. The proposed connection between integrability and reflectionless scattering seems to sp…
We prove that for any tau-symmetric bihamiltonian deformation of the tau-cover of the Principal Hierarchy associated with a semisimple Frobenius manifold, the deformed tau-cover admits an infinite set of Virasoro symmetries.

We prove existence, uniqueness and non-negativity of solutions of certain integral equations describing the density of states $u(z)$ in the spectral theory of soliton gases for the one dimensional integrable focusing Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (fNLS) and for the Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation. Our proofs are based on ideas and methods of potential theory. In particular, we show that the minimizing (positive) measure for certain energy functional is absolutely continuous and its density $u(z)\geq 0$ solves the required integral equation. In a similar fashion we show that $v(z)$, the tempo…
We construct multi-soliton solutions of the n-component vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the half-line subject to two classes of integrable boundary conditions (BCs): the homogeneous Robin BCs and the mixed Neumann/Dirichlet BCs. The construction is based on the approach of dressing the integrable BCs: soliton solutions are generated in preserving the integrable BCs at each step of the Darboux-dressing process. Under the Robin BCs, examples, including boundary-bound solitons, are explicitly derived; under the mixed Neumann/Dirichlet BCs, the boundary can act as a polarizer that tunes d…
Macroscopic dynamics of soliton gases can be analytically described by the thermodynamic limit of the Whitham equations, yielding an integro-differential kinetic equation for the density of states. Under a delta-functional ansatz, the kinetic equation for soliton gas reduces to a non-diagonalisable system of hydrodynamic type whose matrix consists of several 2x2 Jordan blocks. Here we demonstrate the integrability of this system by showing that it possesses a hierarchy of commuting hydrodynamic flows and can be solved by an extension of the generalised hodograph method. Our approach is a gener…
An integrable semi-discretization of the Camassa-Holm equation is presented. The keys of its construction are bilinear forms and determinant structure of solutions of the CH equation. Determinant formulas of $N$-soliton solutions of the continuous and semi-discrete Camassa-Holm equations are presented. Based on determinant formulas, we can generate multi-soliton, multi-cuspon and multi-soliton-cuspon solutions. Numerical computations using the integrable semi-discrete Camassa-Holm equation are performed. It is shown that the integrable semi-discrete Camassa-Holm equation gives very accurate nu…
The integrable vector nonlinear Schrodinger (vector NLS) equation is investigated by using Zakharov-Shabat (ZS) scheme. We get a Lax pair formulation of the vector NLS model. Multi-soliton solution of the equation is also derived by using inverse scattering method of ZS scheme. We also find that there is an elastic and inelastic collision of the bright and dark multi-solitons of the system.
In this letter, we present a simple and new idea to generate two types of novel integrable multi-Lévy-index and mix-Lévy-index (mixed) fractional nonlinear soliton hierarchies, containing multi-index and mixed fractional higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) hierarchy, fractional complex modified Korteweg-de Vries (cmKdV) hierarchy, and fractional mKdV hierarchy. Their explicit forms can be given using the completeness of squared eigenfunctions. Moreover, we present their anomalous dispersion relations via their linearizations, and fractional multi-soliton solutions via the inverse scatteri…
We analytically study rogue-wave (RW) solutions and rational solitons of an integrable fifth-order nonlinear Schrödinger (FONLS) equation with three free parameters. It includes, as particular cases, the usual NLS, Hirota, and Lakshmanan-Porsezian-Daniel (LPD) equations. We present continuous-wave (CW) solutions and conditions for their modulation instability in the framework of this model. Applying the Darboux transformation to the CW input, novel first- and second-order RW solutions of the FONLS equation are analytically found. In particular, trajectories of motion of peaks and depressions o…
Quantum and classical integrable systems share common mathematical structures, and the phenomena appearing in them are interrelated. Solitons, which universally appear in classical integrable systems, also appear in quantum integrable systems. Here, we consider quantum-classical correspondence in a one-dimensional Bose gas with repulsive delta-function interaction and present quantum states corresponding to multi-dark solitons. Using an exact method, we compute the time evolution of the density profile in the multi-quantum dark soliton states. Localized solitary waves that behave like classica…
A geometric approach to immersion formulas for soliton surfaces is provided through new cohomologies on spaces of special types of $\mathfrak{g}$-valued differential forms. This leads us to introduce Poincaré-type lemmas for these cohomologies, which appropriately describe the integrability conditions of Lax pairs associated with systems of PDEs. Our methods clarify the structure and properties of the deformations and soliton surfaces for the aforesaid Lax pairs. Our findings also allow for the generalization of the theory of soliton surfaces in Lie algebras to general soliton submanifolds. Te…
In this paper, we investigate the anomalous dispersive relations, inverse scattering transform with a Riemann-Hilbert (RH) problem, and fractional multi-solitons of the integrable combined fractional higher-order mKdV (fhmKdV) hierarchy, including the fractional mKdV (fmKdV), fractional fifth-order mKdV (f5mKdV), fractional combined third-fifth-order mKdV (f35mKdV) equations, etc., which can be featured via completeness of squared scalar eigenfunctions of the ZS spectral problem. We construct a matrix RH problem to present three types of fractional N-solitons illustrating anomalous dispersions…
In this work, we establish a connection between the extended Prelle-Singer procedure (Chandrasekar \textit{et al.} Proc. R. Soc. A 2005) with five other analytical methods which are widely used to identify integrable systems in the contemporary literature, especially for second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). By synthesizing these methods we bring out the interplay between Lie point symmetries, $λ$-symmetries, adjoint symmetries, null-forms, Darboux polynomials, integrating factors and Jacobi last multiplier in identifying the integrable systems described by second orde…
Sine-Gordon model with variable mass (VMSG) appears in many physical systems, ranging from the current through nonuniform Josephson junction to DNA-promoter dynamics. Such models are usually nonintegrable with solutions found numerically or peturbatively. We construct a class of VMSG models, integrable both at classical and quantum level with exact soliton solutions, which can accelerate, change their shape, width and amplitude simulating realistic inhomogeneous systems at certain limits.
We study the negative flows of the hierarchy of the integrable Heisenberg Ferromagnet model and their soliton solutions. The first negative flow is related to the so-called short pulse equation. We provide a framework which generates Lax pairs for the other members of the hierarchy. The Inverse scattering, based on the dressing method is illustrated with the derivation of the one-soliton solution.
The main aim of this paper is to discuss recent results on the adaptation of the Fokas-Gel'fand procedure for constructing soliton surfaces in Lie algebras, which was originally derived for PDEs [Grundland, Post 2011], to the case of integrable ODEs admitting Lax representations. We give explicit forms of the $\g$-valued immersion functions based on conformal symmetries involving the spectral parameter, a gauge transformation of the wave function and generalized symmetries of the linear spectral problem. The procedure is applied to a symmetry reduction of the static $ϕ^4$-field equations leadi…
We analyze the integrability properties of models defined on the symmetric space SU(2)/U(1) in 3+1 dimensions, using a recently proposed approach for integrable theories in any dimension. We point out the key ingredients for a theory to possess an infinite number of local conservation laws, and discuss classes of models with such property. We propose a 3+1-dimensional, relativistic invariant field theory possessing a toroidal soliton solution carrying a unit of topological charge given by the Hopf map. Construction of the action is guided by the requirement that the energy of static configurat…
A relationship between the tetrahedron equation for maps and the consistency property of integrable discrete equations on $\mathbb{Z}^3$ is investigated. Our approach is a generalization of a method developed in the context of Yang-Baxter maps, based on the invariants of symmetry groups of the lattice equations. The method is demonstrated by a case-by-case analysis of the octahedron type lattice equations classified recently, leading to some new examples of tetrahedron maps and integrable coupled lattice equations.
We review some of the fundamental notions associated to the theory of solitons. More precisely, we focus on the issue of conservation laws via the existence of the Lax pair and also on methods that provide solutions to partial or ordinary differential equations that are associated to discrete or continuous integrable systems. The Riccati equation associated to a given continuous integrable system is also solved and hence suitable conserved quantities are derived. The notion of the Darboux-Backlund transformation is introduced and employed in order to obtain soliton solutions for specific examp…
Delay-difference and delay-differential analogues of the KdV and Boussinesq (BSQ) equations are presented. Each of them has the N-soliton solution and reduces to an already known soliton equation as the delay parameter approaches 0. In addition, a delay-differential analogue of the KP equation is proposed. We discuss its N-soliton solution and the limit as the delay parameter approaches 0. Finally, the relationship between the delay-differential analogues of the KdV, BSQ, and KP equations is clarified. Namely, reductions of the delay KP equation yield the delay KdV and delay BSQ equations.
Based on the theory of integrable boundary conditions (BCs) developed by Sklyanin, we provide a direct method for computing soliton solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation on the half-line. The integrable BCs at the origin are represented by constraints of the Lax pair, and our method lies on dressing the Lax pair by preserving those constraints in the Darboux-dressing process. The method is applied to two classes of solutions: solitons vanishing at infinity and self-modulated solitons on a constant background. Half-line solitons in both cases are explicitly computed. In…
We study local normal forms for completely integrable systems on Poisson manifolds in the presence of additional symmetries. The symmetries that we consider are encoded in actions of compact Lie groups. The existence of Weinstein's splitting theorem for the integrable system is also studied giving some examples in which such a splitting does not exist, i.e. when the integrable system is not, locally, a product of an integrable system on the symplectic leaf and an integrable system on a transversal. The problem of splitting for integrable systems with additional symmetries is also considered.
A general unifying framework for integrable soliton-like systems on time scales is introduced. The $R$-matrix formalism is applied to the algebra of $δ$-differential operators in terms of which one can construct infinite hierarchy of commuting vector fields. The theory is illustrated by two infinite-field integrable hierarchies on time scales which are difference counterparts of KP and mKP. The difference counterparts of AKNS and Kaup-Broer soliton systems are constructed as related finite-field restrictions.
We study existence of helical solitons in the vector modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations, one of which is integrable, whereas another one is non-integrable. The latter one describes nonlinear waves in various physical systems, including plasma and chains of particles connected by elastic springs. By using the dynamical system methods such as the blow-up near singular points and the construction of invariant manifolds, we construct helical solitons by the efficient shooting method. The helical solitons arise as the result of co-dimension one bifurcation and exist along a curve in the ve…
In this paper, a new generalized $5\times5$ matrix spectral problem of Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur(AKNS) type associated with the enlarged matrix Lie super algebra is proposed and its corresponding super soliton hierarchy is established. The super variational identities is used to furnish super-Hamiltonian structures for the resulting super soliton hierarchy.
In the present paper the non-Noether symmetries of the Toda model, nonlinear Schodinger equation and Korteweg-de Vries equations (KdV and mKdV) are discussed. It appears that these symmetries yield the complete sets of conservation laws in involution and lead to the bi-Hamiltonian realizations of the above mentioned models.
In this paper we construct the autonomous quad-equations which admit as symmetries the five-point differential-difference equations belonging to known lists found by Garifullin, Yamilov and Levi. The obtained equations are classified up to autonomous point transformations and some simple non-autonomous transformations. We discuss our results in the framework of the known literature. There are among them a few new examples of both sine-Gordon and Liouville type equations.
In this thesis, we construct a class of exact ASDYM 1-solitons and multi-solitons on 4-dimensional real spaces with the Euclidean signature $(+, +, +, +)$, the Minkowski signature $(+, - , -, -)$, and the split signature ($+$, $+$, $-$, $-$) (the Ultrahyperbolic space). They are new results and successful applications of the Darboux transformation introduced by Nimmo, Gilson, Ohta. In particular, the principal peak of the Lagrangian density Tr$F_{μν}F^{μν}$ is localized on a 3-dimensional hyperplane in 4 dimensional space. Therefore, we use the term "soliton walls" to distinguish them from the…
Motion of curves and surfaces in $\R^3$ lead to nonlinear evolution equations which are often integrable. They are also intimately connected to the dynamics of spin chains in the continuum limit and integrable soliton systems through geometric and gauge symmetric connections/equivalence. Here we point out the fact that a more general situation in which the curves evolve in the presence of additional self consistent vector potentials can lead to interesting generalized spin systems with self consistent potentials or soliton equations with self consistent potentials. We obtain the general form o…
We discuss extension of soliton theory and integrable systems to noncommutative spaces, focusing on integrable aspects of noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations. We give wide class of exact solutions by solving a Riemann-Hilbert problem for the Atiyah-Ward ansatz and present Backlund transformations for the G=U(2) noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations. We find that one kind of noncommutative determinants, quasideterminants, play crucial roles in the construction of noncommutative solutions. We also discuss reduction of a noncommutative anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equatio…
