A relationship between the tetrahedron equation for maps and the consistency property of integrable discrete equations on $\mathbb{Z}^3$ is investigated. Our approach is a generalization of a method developed in the context of Yang-Baxter maps, based on the invariants of symmetry groups of the lattice equations. The method is demonstrated by a case-by-case analysis of the octahedron type lattice equations classified recently, leading to some new examples of tetrahedron maps and integrable coupled lattice equations.
The tetrahedron equation is a three-dimensional generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation. Its solutions define integrable three-dimensional lattice models of statistical mechanics and quantum field theory. Their integrability is not related to the size of the lattice, therefore the same solution of the tetrahedron equation defines different integrable models for different finite periodic cubic lattices. Obviously, any such three-dimensional model can be viewed as a two-dimensional integrable model on a square lattice, where the additional third dimension is treated as an internal degree of f…
We notice a remarkable connection between Bazhanov-Sergeev solution of Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equation and certain well-known cluster algebra expression. The tetrahedron transformation is then identified with a sequence of four mutations. As an application of the new formalism we show how to construct integrable system with spectral curve with arbitrary symmetric Newton polygon. Finally, we embed this integrable system into double Bruhat cell of a Poisson-Lie group, show how triangular decomposition can be used to extend our approach to general non-symmetric Newton polygons, and prove Lemma…
We study tetrahedron maps, which are set-theoretical solutions to the Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equation, and Yang-Baxter maps, which are set-theoretical solutions to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. In particular, we clarify the structure of the nonlinear algebraic relations which define linear (parametric) tetrahedron maps (with nonlinear dependence on parameters), and we present several transformations which allow one to obtain new such maps from known ones. Furthermore, we prove that the differential of a (nonlinear) tetrahedron map on a manifold is a tetrahedron map as well. Similar resu…
I propose a scheme of constructing classical integrable models in 3+1 discrete dimensions, based on a relaxed version of the problem of factorizing a matrix into the product of four matrices of a special form.
We report progress in constructing Boltzmann weights for integrable 3-dimensional lattice spin models. We show that a large class of vertex solutions to the modified tetrahedron equation can be conveniently parameterized in terms of N-th roots of theta-functions on the Jacobian of a compact algebraic curve. Fay's identity guarantees the Fermat relations and the classical equations of motion for the parameters determining the Boltzmann weights. Our parameterization allows to write a simple formula for fused Boltzmann weights R which describe the partition function of an arbitrary open box and w…
We clarify the structure of the Bazhanov-Baxter model of the 3-dim N-state integrable model. There are two essential points, i) the cubic symmetries, and ii) the spherical trigonometry parametrization, to understand the structure of this model. We propose two approaches to find a candidate as a solution of the tetrahedron equation, and we find a new solution.
The intertwiner of the quantized coordinate ring $A_q(sl_3)$ is known to yield a solution to the tetrahedron equation. By evaluating their $n$-fold composition with special boundary vectors we generate series of solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. Finding their origin in conventional quantum group theory is a clue to the link between two and three dimensional integrable systems. We identify them with the quantum $R$ matrices associated with the $q$-oscillator representations of $U_q(A^{(2)}_{2n})$, $U_q(C^{(1)}_n)$ and $U_q(D^{(2)}_{n+1})$.
We describe a scheme of constructing classical integrable models in 2+1-dimensional discrete space-time, based on the functional tetrahedron equation - equation that makes manifest the symmetries of a model in local form. We construct a very general "block-matrix model" together with its algebro-geometric solutions, study its various particular cases, and also present a remarkably simple scheme of quantization for one of those cases.
A large class of 3-dimensional integrable lattice spin models is constructed. The starting point is an invertible canonical mapping operator in the space of a triple Weyl algebra. This operator is derived postulating a current branching principle together with a Baxter Z-invariance. The tetrahedron equation for this operator follows without further calculations. If the Weyl parameter is taken to be a root of unity, the mapping operator decomposes into a matrix conjugation and a C-number functional mapping. The operator of the matrix conjugation satisfies a modified tetrahedron equation (MTE) i…
This paper adds two observations to the work solv-int/9701016 where some eigenstates for a model based on tetrahedron equation have been constructed. The first observation is that there exists a more "algebraic" construction of one-particle states, resembling the 1+1-dimensional algebraic Bethe ansatz. The second observation is that the strings introduced in solv-int/9701016 are symmetries of a transfer matrix, rather than just eigenstates.
In this work, we establish a connection between the extended Prelle-Singer procedure (Chandrasekar \textit{et al.} Proc. R. Soc. A 2005) with five other analytical methods which are widely used to identify integrable systems in the contemporary literature, especially for second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). By synthesizing these methods we bring out the interplay between Lie point symmetries, $λ$-symmetries, adjoint symmetries, null-forms, Darboux polynomials, integrating factors and Jacobi last multiplier in identifying the integrable systems described by second orde…
In this paper we construct the autonomous quad-equations which admit as symmetries the five-point differential-difference equations belonging to known lists found by Garifullin, Yamilov and Levi. The obtained equations are classified up to autonomous point transformations and some simple non-autonomous transformations. We discuss our results in the framework of the known literature. There are among them a few new examples of both sine-Gordon and Liouville type equations.
We consider maps which preserve functions which are built out of the invariants of some simple vector fields. We give a reduction procedure, which can be used to derive commuting maps of the plane, which preserve the same symplectic form and first integral. We show how our method can be applied to some maps which have recently appeared in the context of Yang-Baxter maps.
We investigate the relation between pluri-Lagrangian hierarchies of $2$-dimensional partial differential equations and their variational symmetries. The aim is to generalize to the case of partial differential equations the recent findings in [Petrera, Suris. J. Nonlinear Math. Phys. 24:sup1, 121--145 (2017)] for ordinary differential equations. We consider hierarchies of $2$-dimensional Lagrangian PDEs (many of which have a natural $(1+1)$-dimensional space-time interpretation) and show that if the flow of each PDE is a variational symmetry of all others, then there exists a pluri-Lagrangian …
The Modified Tetrahedron Equation (MTE) with affine Weyl quantum variables at N-th root of unity is solved by a rational mapping operator which is obtained from the solution of a linear problem. We show that the solutions can be parameterized in terms of eight free parameters and sixteen discrete phase choices, thus providing a broad starting point for the construction of 3-dimensional integrable lattice models. The Fermat curve points parameterizing the representation of the mapping operator in terms of cyclic functions are expressed in terms of the independent parameters. An explicit formula…
In this paper, to begin with, we review six different analytical methods which are widely used to derive symmetries, integrating factors, multipliers, Darboux polynomials and integrals of second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. We illustrate the algorithm behind each method by considering a nonlinear oscillator equation as an example. In the second part of this paper, we examine the interconnections between these methods. We establish a road map between extended Prelle-Singer procedure with all other methods cited above and thereby demonstrate the interplay between Lie point sy…
In this paper, symmetry analysis is extended to study nonlocal differential equations, in particular two integrable nonlocal equations, the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the nonlocal modified Korteweg--de Vries equation. Lie point symmetries are obtained based on a general theory and used to reduce these equations to nonlocal and local ordinary differential equations separately; namely one symmetry may allow reductions to both nonlocal and local equations depending on how the invariant variables are chosen. For the nonlocal modified Korteweg--de Vries equation, analogously to the…
Recently, the first-named author gave a classification of 3D consistent 6-tuples of quad-equations with the tetrahedron property; several novel asymmetric 6-tuples have been found. Due to 3D consistency, these 6-tuples can be extended to discrete integrable systems on Z^m. We establish Lagrangian structures and flip-invariance of the action functional for the class of discrete integrable systems involving equations for which some of the biquadratics are non-degenerate and some are degenerate. This class covers, among others, some of the above mentioned novel systems.
We describe an infinite-dimensional algebra of hidden symmetries of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. Our derivation is based on a generalization of the supertwistor correspondence. Using the latter, we construct an infinite sequence of flows on the solution space of the N=4 SYM equations. The dependence of the SYM fields on the parameters along the flows can be recovered by solving the equations of the hierarchy. We embed the N=4 SYM equations in the infinite system of the hierarchy equations and show that this SYM hierarchy is associated with an infinite set of graded symmetries re…
In this paper we try to find examples of integrable natural Hamiltonian systems on the sphere $S^2$ with the symmetries of each Platonic polyhedra. Although some of these systems are known, their expression is extremely complicated; we try here to find the simplest possible expressions for this kind of dynamical systems. Even in the simplest cases it is not easy to prove their integrability by direct computation of the first integrals, therefore, we make use of numerical methods to provide evidences of integrability; namely, by analyzing their Poincaré sections (surface sections). In this way …
We find direct and inverse recursion operators for integrable cases of the rmdKP and rdDym equations. Also, we study actions of these operators on the contact symmetries and find shadows of nonlocal symmetries of these equations.
Nonlocal symmetries for exactly integrable two-field evolutionary systems of the third order have been computed. Differentiation of the nonlocal symmetries with respect to spatial variable gives a few nonevolutionary systems for each evolutionary system. Zero curvature representations for some new nonevolution systems are presented.
We introduce a class of ${\mathbb{Z}}_N$ graded discrete Lax pairs, with $N\times N$ matrices, linear in the spectral parameter. We give a classification scheme for such Lax pairs and the associated discrete integrable systems. We present two potential forms and completely classify the generic case. Many well known examples belong to our scheme for $N=2$, so many of our systems may be regarded as generalisations of these. Even at $N=3$, several new integrable systems arise. Many of our equations are mutually compatible, so can be used together to form "coloured" lattices. We also present conti…
A symmetry classification is performed for a class of differential-difference equations depending on 9 parameters. A 6-parameter subclass of these equations is an integrable discretization of the Krichever-Novikov equation. The dimension $n$ of the Lie point symmetry algebra satisfies $1 \le n \le 5$. The highest dimensions, namely $n=5$ and $n=4$ occur only in the integrable cases.
The complete lists of vector hyperbolic equations on the sphere that have integrable third order vector isotropic and anisotropic symmetries are presented. Several new integrable hyperbolic vector models are found. By their integrability we mean the existence of vector Backlund transformations depending on a parameter. For all new equations such transformations are constructed.
We present examples of Lax-integrable multi-dimensional systems of partial differential equations with higher local symmetries. We also consider Lagrangian deformations of these equations and construct variational bivectors on them.
We compare the results of our two papers with the results of the paper Aratyn H., Gomes J.F., Zimerman A.H., Higher order Painlevé equations and their symmetries via reductions of a class of integrable models, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor., V. 44} (2011), Art. No. 235202.
Using the Lax representation with non-removable parameter, we construct two hierarchies of nonlocal conservation laws for the 3D rdDym equation $u_{ty} = u_xu_{xy} - u_yu_{xx}$ and describe the algebras of nonlocal symmetries in the corresponding coverings.
An integrable hierarchies connected with linear stationary Schrödinger equation with energy dependent potentials (in general case) are considered. Galilei-like and scaling invariance transformations are constructed. A symmetry method is applied to construct invariant solutions.
We give a review of some recent work on generalization of the Bethe ansatz in the case of $2+1$-dimensional models of quantum field theory. As such a model, we consider one associated with the tetrahedron equation, i.e. the $2+1$-dimensional generalization of the famous Yang--Baxter equation. We construct some eigenstates of the transfer matrix of that model. There arise, together with states composed of point-like particles analogous to those in the usual $1+1$-dimensional Bethe ansatz, new string-like states and string-particle hybrids.
We apply a 3-dimensional approach to describe a new parametrization of the L-operators for the 2-dimensional Bazhanov-Stroganov (BS) integrable spin model related to the chiral Potts model. This parametrization is based on the solution of the associated classical discrete integrable system. Using a 3-dimensional vertex satisfying a modified tetrahedron equation, we construct an operator which generalizes the BS quantum intertwining matrix S. This operator describes the isospectral deformations of the integrable BS model.
In this work, we establish a connection between the extended Prelle-Singer procedure with other widely used analytical methods to identify integrable systems in the case of $n^{th}$-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). By synthesizing these methods we bring out the interlink between Lie point symmetries, contact symmetries, $λ$-symmetries, adjoint-symmetries, null forms, Darboux polynomials, integrating factors, Jacobi last multiplier and generalized $λ$-symmetries corresponding to the $n^{th}$-order ODEs. We also prove these interlinks with suitable examples. By exploiting …

In this article we continue to develop the theory of generating symmetries for integrable equations. A technique for computation of generating symmetries using Maple is presented. The technique is based on the standard symmetry method. By using it we find generating symmetries for the KdV, Camassa-Holm, mKdV, sine-Gordon, Boussinesq, associated Degasperis-Procesi and associated Novikov equations.
The 4-simplex equation is a higher-dimensional analogue of Zamolodchikov's tetrahedron equation and the Yang--Baxter equation which are two of the most fundamental equations of mathematical physics. In this paper, we introduce a method for constructing 4-simplex maps, namely solutions to the set-theoretical 4-simplex equation, using Lax matrix refactorisation problems. Employing this method, we construct 4-simplex maps which at a certain limit give tetrahedron maps classified by Kashaev, Korepanov and Sergeev. Moreover, we construct a Kadomtsev--Petviashvili type of 4-simplex map. Finally, we …
In the paper we continue to consider symmetries related to the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy. We derive symmetries for the integrable discrete nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchy and discrete AKNS hierarchy. The integrable discrete nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchy are in scalar form and its two sets of symmetries are shown to form a Lie algebra. We also present discrete AKNS isospectral flows, non-isospectral flows and their recursion operator. In continuous limit these flows go to the continuous AKNS flows and the recursion operator goes to the square of the AKNS recursion operartor. These discrete AKN…
We construct new integrable coupled systems of N=1 supersymmetric equations and present integrable fermionic extensions of the Burgers and Boussinesq equations. Existence of infinitely many higher symmetries is demonstrated by the presence of recursion operators. Various algebraic methods are applied to the analysis of symmetries, conservation laws, recursion operators, and Hamiltonian structures. A fermionic extension of the Burgers equation is related with the Burgers flows on associative algebras. A Gardner's deformation is found for the bosonic super-field dispersionless Boussinesq equatio…
We study additional non-isospectral symmetries of constrained (reduced) N=2 supersymmetric KP hierarchies of integrable ``soliton''-like evolution equations. These symmetries are shown to form an infinite-dimensional non-Abelian superloop superalgebra. Furthermore we study the general Darboux-Backlund (DB) transformations (including adjoint-DB and binary DB) of N=2 super- KP hierarchies preserving (most of) the additional symmetries. Also we derive the explicit form of the general DB (N=2 ``super- soliton''-like) solutions in the form of generalized Wronskian-like super-determinants.
The knowledge of {\it non usual} and sometimes {\it hidden} symmetries of (classical) integrable systems provides a very powerful setting-out of solutions of these models. Primarily, the understanding and possibly the quantisation of intriguing symmetries could give rise to deeper insight into the nature of field spectrum and correlation functions in quantum integrable models. With this perspective in mind we will propose a general framework for discovery and investigation of local, quasi-local and non-local symmetries in classical integrable systems. We will pay particular attention to the st…
We present here the explicit parametric solutions of second order differential equations invariant under time translation and rescaling and third order differential equations invariant under time translation and the two homogeneity symmetries. The computation of first integrals gives in the most general case, the parametric form of the general solution. For some polynomial functions we obtain a time parametrisation quadrature which can be solved in terms of ``known'' functions.
A complete classification of isotropic vector equations of the geometric type that possess higher symmetries is proposed. New examples of integrable multi-component systems of the geometric type and their auto-Backlund transformations are found.
The soliton spectrum (massive and massless) of a family of integrable models with local U(1) and U(1)\otimes U(1) symmetries is studied. These models represent relevant integrable deformations of SL(2,R) \otimes U(1)^{n-1} - WZW and SL(2,R) \otimes SL(2,R)\otimes U(1)^{n-2} - WZW models. Their massless solitons appears as specific topological solutions of the U(1) (or U(1)\otimes U(1)) - CFTs. The nonconformal analog of the GKO-coset formula is derived and used in the construction of the composite massive solitons of the ungauged integrable models.
In this paper, we first give a short account on the indecomposable sl(2,C) modules in the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand (BGG) category O. We show these modules naturally arise for homogeneous integrable nonlinear evolutionary systems. We then develop an approach to construct master symmetries for such integrable systems. This method naturally enables us to compute the hierarchy of time-dependent symmetries. We finally illustrate the method using both classical and new examples. We compare our approach to the known existing methods used to construct master symmetries. For the new integrable equatio…
These notes correspond to a mini-course given at the Poisson 2016 conference in Geneva. Starting from classical integrable systems in the sense of Liouville, we explore the notion of non-degenerate singularity and expose recent research in connection with semi-toric systems. The quantum and semiclassical counterpart will also be presented, in the viewpoint of the inverse question: from the quantum mechanical spectrum, can you recover the classical system?
Integrability conditions for difference equations admitting a second order formal recursion operator are presented and the derivation of symmetries and canonical conservation laws is discussed. In the generic case, nonlocal conservation laws are also generated. A new integrable equation satisfying the second order integrability conditions is presented and its integrability is established by the construction of symmetries, conservation laws and a 3x3 Lax representation. Finally, the relation of the symmetries of this equation to a generalized Bogoyavlensky lattice and a new integrable lattice a…
In a recent paper [TMP, 200:1 (2019), 966--984] by the authors, a series of integrable discrete autonomous equations on a square lattice with a non-standard structure of generalized symmetries is constructed. We build modified series by using discrete non-point transformations. We use both non-invertible linearizable transformations and non-point transformations invertible on solutions of the discrete equation. As a result, we get several series of new examples of discrete equations along with their generalized symmetries and master symmetries. The generalized symmetries constructed give new i…
A connection between the Yang-Baxter relation for maps and the multi-dimensional consistency property of integrable equations on quad-graphs is investigated. The approach is based on the symmetry analysis of the corresponding equations. It is shown that the Yang-Baxter variables can be chosen as invariants of the multi-parameter symmetry groups of the equations. We use the classification results by Adler, Bobenko and Suris to demonstrate this method. Some new examples of Yang-Baxter maps are derived in this way from multi-field integrable equations.
We apply the theory of Lie point symmetries for the study of a family of partial differential equations which are integrable by the hyperbolic reductions method and are reduced to members of the Painlevé transcendents. The main results of this study is that from the application of the similarity transformations provided by the Lie point symmetries all the members of the family of the partial differential equations are reduced to second-order differential equations which are maximal symmetric and can be linearized.
It is well known that integrable hierarchies in (1+1) dimensions are local while the recursion operators that generate them usually contain nonlocal terms. We resolve this apparent discrepancy by providing simple and universal sufficient conditions for a (nonlocal) recursion operator in (1+1) dimensions to generate a hierarchy of local symmetries. These conditions are satisfied by virtually all known today recursion operators and are much easier to verify than those found in earlier work. We also give explicit formulas for the nonlocal parts of higher recursion operators, Poisson and symplecti…
