We define affine transport lifts on the tangent bundle by associating a transport rule for tangent vectors with a vector field on the base manifold. The aim is to develop tools for the study of kinetic/ dynamical symmetries in relativistic particle motion. The transport lift unifies and generalises the various existing lifted vector fields, with clear geometric interpretations. We find the affine dynamical symmetries of free particle motion, and compare this to previous results and to the alternative concept of "matter symmetry".
We find the Lie point symmetries for non-relativistic two-dimensional charged particle motion. These symmetries comprise a quasi-invariance transformation, a time-dependent rotation, a time-dependent spatial translation and a dilation. The associated electromagnetic fields satisfy a system of first-order linear partial differential equations. This system is solved exactly, yielding four classes of electromagnetic fields compatible with Lie point symmetries.
Lie derivatives of various geometrical and physical quantities define symmetries and conformal symmetries in general relativity. Thus we obtain motions, collineations, conformal motions and conformal collineations. These symmetries are used not only to find new solutions of Einstein's field equations but to classify the spaces also. Different classification schemes are presented here. Relationships between these symmetries are discussed and illustrating examples are presented.
A symmetry analysis is presented for the three-dimensional nonrelativistic motion of charged particles in arbitrary stationary electromagnetic fields. The general form of the Lie point symmetries is found along with the fields that respect them, considering non-trivial cases of physical interest. The restrictions placed upon the electromagnetic field yield five classes of solutions, expressed in terms of the vector and scalar potential. The Noether type symmetries are also investigated and their corresponding invariants are found. A second integral of motion, besides the Hamiltonian, results i…
We find the Noether point symmetries for non-relativistic two-dimensional charged particle motion. These symmetries are composed of a quasi-invariance transformation, a time-dependent rotation and a time-dependent spatial translation. The associated electromagnetic field satisfy a system of first-order linear partial differential equations. This system is solved exactly, yielding three classes of electromagnetic fields compatible with Noether point symmetries. The corresponding Noether invariants are derived and interpreted.
We consider symmetries and perturbed symmetries of canonical Hamiltonian equations of motion. Specifically we consider the case in which the Hamiltonian equations exhibit a Lambda symmetry under some Lie point vector field. After a brief survey of the relationships between standard symmetries and the existence of first integrals, we recall the definition and the properties of Lambda symmetries. We show that in the presence of a Lambda symmetry for the Hamiltonian equations, one can introduce the notion of "Lambda-constant of motion". The presence of a Lambda symmetry leads also to a nice and u…
Quasisymmetry builds a third invariant for charged-particle motion besides energy and magnetic moment. We address quasisymmetry at the level of approximate symmetries of first-order guiding-centre motion. We find that the conditions to leading order are the same as for exact quasisymmetry if one insists that the symmetry is purely spatial. We also generalise to allow for approximate phase-space symmetries, and derive weaker conditions. The latter recover "weak quasisymmetry" as a subcase, thus we prove it is spatial only to leading order, but also that it implies the existence of a wider class…
Lie symmetries of the Schroedinger-Pauli equations for charged particles and quasirelativistic Schroedinger equations are classified. In particular a new superintegrable system with spin-orbit coupling is discovered.
The properties of a system of n = 3 coupled oscillators with linear terms in the velocities (magnetic terms) depending in two parameters are studied. We proved the existence of a bi-Hamiltonian structure arising from a non-symplectic symmetry, as well the existence of master symmetries and additional integrals of motion (weak superintegrability) for certain particular values of the parameters.
The phase space of general relativistic test particle is defined as the 1-jet space of motions. A Lorentzian metric defines the canonical contact structure on the odd-dimensional phase space. In the paper we study infinitesimal symmetries of the gravitational contact phase structure which are not generated by spacetime infinitesimal symmetries, i.e. they are hidden symmetries. We prove that Killing multivector fields admit hidden symmetries of the gravitational contact phase structure and we give the explicit description of such hidden symmetries.
A general approach is presented for quantizing a metric nonlinear system on a manifold of constant curvature. It makes use of a curvature dependent procedure which relies on determining Noether symmetries from the metric. The curvature of the space functions as a constant parameter. For a specific metric which defines the manifold, Lie differentiation of the metric gives these symmetries. A metric is used such that the resulting Schrodinger equation can be solved in terms of hypergeometric functions. This permits the investigation of both the energy spectrum and wave functions exactly for this…
The aim of this paper is to present a new approach to construct constants of motion associated with scaling symmetries of dynamical systems. Scaling maps could be symmetries of the equations of motion but not of its associated Lagrangian action. We have constructed a Noether inspired theorem in a vertical extended space that can be used to obtain constants of motion for these symmetries. Noether theorem can be obtained as a particular case of our construction. To illustrate how the procedure works, we present two interesting examples, a) the Schwarzian Mechanics based on Schwarzian derivative …
We show that if a Lagrangian is invariant under a transformation (with the invariance defined in the standard manner), then the equations of motion obtained from it maintain their form under the transformation. We also show that the converse is not true, giving examples of equations of motion that are form-invariant under a transformation, but these equations can be derived from a Lagrangian that is not invariant under such transformation. The conclusions are valid for discrete or continuous systems.
Our previous study of a system of bodies assumed to move along almost circular orbits around a central mass, approximately described by Hill's equations, is extended to "exotic" [alias non-commutative] particles. For a certain critical value of the angular velocity, the only allowed motions follow the Hall law. Translations and generalized boosts span two independent Heisenberg algebras with different central parameters. In the critical case, the symmetry reduces to a single Heisenberg algebra.
In a previous work, both the constants of motion of a classical system and the symmetries of the corresponding quantum version have been computed with the help of factorizations. As their expressions were not polynomial, in this paper the question of finding an equivalent set of polynomial constants of motion and symmetries is addressed. The general algebraic relations as well as the appropriate Hermitian relations will also be found.
We study how the explicit symmetry breaking, through a continuous parameter in the Lagrangian, can actually lead to the creation of different types of symmetries. As examples we consider the motion of a relativistic particle in a curved background, where a nonzero mass breaks the symmetry of the conformal algebra of the metric, and the motion in a Bogoslovsky-Finsler space-time, where a Lorentz violation takes place. In the first case, new nonlocal conserved charges emerge in the place of those which were previously generated by the conformal Killing vectors, while in the second, rational in t…
We derive the Lie and the Noether conditions for the equations of motion of a dynamical system in a $n-$dimensional Riemannian space. We solve these conditions in the sense that we express the symmetry generating vectors in terms of the special projective and the homothetic vectors of the space. Therefore the Lie and the Noether symmetries for these equations are geometric symmetries or, equivalently, the geometry of the space is modulating the motion of dynamical systems in that space. We give two theorems which contain all the necessary conditions which allow one to determine the Lie and the…
With using the algebraic approach Lie symmetries of Schrödinger equations with matrix potentials are classified. Thirty three inequivalent equations of such type together with the related symmetry groups are specified, the admissible equivalence relations are clearly indicated. In particular the Boyer results concerning kinematical invariance groups for arbitrary potentials (C. P. Boyer, Helv. Phys. Acta, {\bf 47}, 450--605 (1974)) are clarified and corrected.
The symmetry structure of twodimensional nonlinear isotropic oscillator, introduced in Physica D237 (2008) 505, is discussed. It is shown that it possesses three independent integrals of motion which can be chosen in such a way that they span SU(2), E(2) or SU(1,1) algebras, depending on the value of total energy. They generate the infinitesimal canonical symmetry transformations; integrability of the latter is analyzed. The results are then generalized to the case of arbitrary number of degrees of freedom.
We fully develop the concept of causal symmetry introduced in Class. Quant. Grav. 20 (2003) L139. A causal symmetry is a transformation of a Lorentzian manifold (V,g) which maps every future-directed vector onto a future-directed vector. We prove that the set of all causal symmetries is not a group under the usual composition operation but a submonoid of the diffeomorphism group of V. Therefore, the infinitesimal generating vector fields of causal symmetries --causal motions-- are associated to local one-parameter groups of transformations which are causal symmetries only for positive values o…
Two examples, not connected at present, from author's papers (Nuovo Cim., 1992, v.105A, p.77 [hep-th/0207210] and GRG, 1999, v.31, p.1431 [gr-qc/0207017]) are considered here in which a physical model has discrete symmetries and additional non-observable coordinates or parameters. Then it is possible to introduce some apparent continuous symmetries of the model for an observer which cannot know values of these additional quantities.
In these lectures the relations between symmetries, Lie algebras, Killing vectors and Noether's theorem are reviewed. A generalisation of the basic ideas to include velocity-dependend co-ordinate transformations naturally leads to the concept of Killing tensors. Via their Poisson brackets these tensors generate an {\em a priori} infinite-dimensional Lie algebra. The nature of such infinite algebras is clarified using the example of flat space-time. Next the formalism is extended to spinning space, which in addition to the standard real co-ordinates is parametrized also by Grassmann-valued vect…
This paper is devoted to the study of mechanical systems subjected to external forces in the framework of symplectic geometry. We obtain a Noether's theorem for Lagrangian systems with external forces, among other results regarding symmetries and conserved quantities. We particularize our results for the so-called Rayleigh dissipation, i.e., external forces that are derived from a dissipation function, and illustrate them with some examples. Moreover, we present a theory for the reduction of Lagrangian systems subjected to external forces which are invariant under the action of a Lie group.
Constants of motion, Lagrangians and Hamiltonians admitted by a family of relevant nonlinear oscillators are derived using a geometric formalism. The theory of the Jacobi last multiplier allows us to find Lagrangian descriptions and constants of the motion. An application of the jet bundle formulation of symmetries of differential equations is presented in the second part of the paper. After a short review of the general formalism, the particular case of non-local symmetries is studied in detail by making use of an extended formalism. The theory is related to some results previously obtained b…
We discuss the notion of symmetries in non-local field theories characterized by integro-differential equations of motion, from a geometric perspective. We then focus on Group Field Theory (GFT) models of quantum gravity and provide a general analysis of their continuous point symmetry transformations, including the generalized conservation laws following from them.
This is a survey on finite-dimensional integrable dynamical systems related to Hamiltonian $G$-actions. Within a framework of noncommutative integrability we study integrability of $G$-invariant systems, collective motions and reduced integrability. We also consider reductions of the Hamiltonian flows restricted to their invariant submanifolds generalizing classical Hess--Appel'rot case of a heavy rigid body motion.
We use group theoretic methods to obtain the extended Lie point symmetries of the equations of motion for a charged particle in the field of a monopole. Cases with certain model magnetic fields and potentials are also studied. Our analysis gives the generators and Lie algebras generating the inherent symmetries. The equations of motion of a scalar particle probing the near horizon structure of a black hole is also treated likewise. We have also found the generators of Krause's complete symmetry groups for some of the above examples.

It is shown that, under suitable conditions, involving in particular the existence of analytic constants of motion, the presence of Lie point symmetries can ensure the convergence of the transformation taking a vector field (or dynamical system) into normal form
The concept of quantum commutativity with respect to an action or coaction of a given Hopf algebra is used for the algebraic description of a system of particles and their interaction with certain quantum field. Graded commutativity and particles in singular magnetic field are considered as a particular example of the general formalism. The corresponding statistics and generalized Pauli exclusion principle are also mentioned.
The classical quantization of the motion of a free particle and that of an harmonic oscillator on a double cone are achieved by a quantization scheme [M.C. Nucci, Theor. Math. Phys. 168 (2011) 994], that preserves the Noether point symmetries of the underlying Lagrangian in order to construct the Schroedinger equation. The result is different from that given in [K. Kowalski, J.Rembielnski, Ann. Phys. 329 (2013) 146]. A comparison of the different outcomes is provided.
These are introductory notes on symmetries in quantum field theory and how they apply to particle physics. The notes cover the fundamentals of group theory, their representations, Lie groups, and Lie algebras, along with an elaborate discussion of the representations of SU(N), Lorentz, and Poincare groups and their respective algebras. We spend a lot of time on the realisation of these symmetry groups in quantum field theory, as both global and gauge symmetries, as well as their spontaneous breaking and the Higgs mechanism. In the end, we culminate all the lessons from the course to enumerate …
In a quantum world, reference frames are ultimately quantum systems too -- but what does it mean to "jump into the perspective of a quantum particle"? In this work, we show that quantum reference frame (QRF) transformations appear naturally as symmetries of simple physical systems. This allows us to rederive and generalize known QRF transformations within an alternative, operationally transparent framework, and to shed new light on their structure and interpretation. We give an explicit description of the observables that are measurable by agents constrained by such quantum symmetries, and app…
This is the first in a pair of articles that classify the configuration space and kinematic symmetry groups for $N$ identical particles in one-dimensional traps experiencing Galilean-invariant two-body interactions. These symmetries explain degeneracies in the few-body spectrum and demonstrate how tuning the trap shape and the particle interactions can manipulate these degeneracies. The additional symmetries that emerge in the non-interacting limit and in the unitary limit of an infinitely strong contact interaction are sufficient to algebraically solve for the spectrum and degeneracy in terms…
It is noted that the internal space-time symmetries of relativistic particles are dictated by Wigner's little groups. The symmetry of massive particles is like the three-dimensional rotation group, while the symmetry of massless particles is locally isomorphic to the two-dimensional Euclidean group. It is noted also that, while the rotational degree of freedom for a massless particle leads to its helicity, the two translational degrees of freedom correspond to its gauge degrees of freedom. It is shown that the E(2)-like symmetry of of massless particles can be obtained as an infinite-momentum …
We show that the conservation laws for the geodesic equation which are associated to affine symmetries can be obtained from symmetries of the Lagrangian for affinely parametrized geodesics according to Noether's theorem, in contrast to claims found in the literature. In particular, using Aminova's classification of affine motions of Lorentzian manifolds, we show in detail how affine motions define generalized symmetries of the geodesic Lagrangian. We compute all infinitesimal proper affine symmetries and the corresponding geodesic conservation laws for all homogeneous solutions to the Einstein…
We show that a Minkowski phase space endowed with a bracket relatively to a conformable differential realizes a Poisson algebra, confering a bi-Hamiltonian structure to the resulting manifold. We infer that the related Hamiltonian vector field is an infinitesimal Noether symmetry, and compute the corresponding deformed recursion operator. Besides, using the Hamiltonian-Jacobi separability, we construct recursion operators for Hamiltonian vector fields in conformable Poisson-Schwarzschild and Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) manifolds, and derive related constants of motion, Christoff…
There are gauge-transformation operators applicable to massless spin-1/2 particles within the little-group framework of internal space-time symmetries of massive and massless particles. It is shown that two of the $SL(2,c)$ spinors are invariant under gauge transformations while the remaining two are not. The Dirac equation contains only the gauge-invariant spinors leading to polarized neutrinos. It is shown that the gauge-dependent $SL(2,c)$ spinor is the origin of the gauge dependence of electromagnetic four-potentials. It is noted also that, for spin-1/2 particles, the symmetry group for ma…
This is the second in a pair of articles that classify the configuration space and kinematic symmetry groups for $N$ identical particles in one-dimensional traps experiencing Galilean-invariant two-body interactions. These symmetries explain degeneracies in the few-body spectrum and demonstrate how tuning the trap shape and the particle interactions can manipulate these degeneracies. The additional symmetries that emerge in the non-interacting limit and in the unitary limit of an infinitely strong contact interaction are sufficient to algebraically solve for the spectrum and degeneracy in term…
In this paper we achieve the quantization of a particle moving on the $SU(2)$ group manifold, that is, the three-dimensional sphere $S^{3}$, by using group-theoretical methods. For this purpose, a fundamental role is played by contact, non-point symmetries, i.e., symmetries that leave the Poincaré-Cartan form semi-invariant at the classical level, although not necessarily the Lagrangian. Special attention is paid to the role played by the basic quantum commutators, which depart from the canonical, Heisenberg-Weyl ones, as well as the relationship between the integration measure in the Hilbert …
When discussing consequences of symmetries of dynamical systems based on Noether's first theorem, most standard textbooks on classical or quantum mechanics present a conclusion stating that a global continuous Lie symmetry implies the existence of a time independent conserved Noether charge which is the generator of the action on phase space of that symmetry, and which necessarily must as well commute with the Hamiltonian. However this need not be so, nor does that statement do justice to the complete scope and reach of Noether's first theorem. Rather a much less restrictive statement applies,…
The term "particle-hole symmetry" is beset with conflicting meanings in contemporary physics. Conceived and written from a condensed-matter standpoint, the present paper aims to clarify and sharpen the terminology. In that vein, we propose to define the operation of "particle-hole conjugation" as the tautological algebra automorphism that simply swaps single-fermion creation and annihilation operators, and we construct its invariant lift to the Fock space. Particle-hole symmetries then arise for gapful or gapless free-fermion systems at half filling, as the concatenation of particle-hole conju…
We discuss geometric properties of non-Noether symmetries and their possible applications in integrable Hamiltonian systems. Correspondence between non-Noether symmetries and conservation laws is revisited. It is shown that in regular Hamiltonian systems such a symmetries canonically lead to a Lax pairs on the algebra of linear operators on cotangent bundle over the phase space. Relationship between the non-Noether symmetries and other wide spread geometric methods of generating conservation laws such as bi-Hamiltonian formalism, bidifferential calculi and Frolicher-Nijenhuis geometry is consi…
This article investigates the properties of a few interacting particles trapped in a few wells and how these properties change under adiabatic tuning of interaction strength and inter-well tunneling. While some system properties are dependent on the specific shapes of the traps and the interactions, this article applies symmetry analysis to identify generic features in the spectrum of stationary states of few-particle, few-well systems. Extended attention is given to a simple but flexible three-parameter model of two particles in two wells in one dimension. A key insight is that two limiting c…
We consider the variational formulation for vertical slice models introduced in Cotter and Holm (Proc Roy Soc, 2013). These models have a Kelvin circulation theorem that holds on all materially-transported closed loops, not just those loops on isosurfaces of potential temperature. Potential vorticity conservation can be derived directly from this circulation theorem. In this paper, we show that this property is due to these models having a relabelling symmetry for every single diffeomorphism of the vertical slice that preserves the density, not just those diffeomorphisms that preserve the pote…
In the context of Markov processes, both in discrete and continuous setting, we show a general relation between duality functions and symmetries of the generator. If the generator can be written in the form of a Hamiltonian of a quantum spin system, then the "hidden" symmetries are easily derived. We illustrate our approach in processes of symmetric exclusion type, in which the symmetry is of SU(2) type, as well as for the Kipnis-Marchioro-Presutti (KMP) model for which we unveil its SU(1,1) symmetry. The KMP model is in turn an instantaneous thermalization limit of the energy process associat…
New symmetry properties are found for pointlike scalar and Dirac particles (Higgs boson and all leptons) in Riemannian and Riemann-Cartan spacetimes in the presence of electromagnetic interactions. A Hermitian form of the Klein-Gordon equation for a pointlike scalar particle in an arbitrary n-dimensional Riemannian (or Riemann-Cartan) spacetime is obtained. New conformal symmetries of initial and Hermitian forms of this equation are ascertained. In the above spacetime, general Hamiltonians in the generalized Feshbach-Villars and Foldy-Wouthuysen representations are derived. The conformal-like …
We propose a unified description for the constants of motion for superintegrable deformations of the oscillator and Coulomb systems on N-dimensional Euclidean space, sphere and hyperboloid. We also consider the duality between these generalized systems and present some example.
Wigner's little groups are subgroups of the Lorentz group dictating the internal space-time symmetries of massive and massless particles. These little groups are like O(3) and E(2) for massive and massless particles respectively. While the geometry of the O(3) symmetry is familiar to us, the geometry of the flat plane cannot explain the E(2)-like symmetry for massless particles. However, the geometry of a circular cylinder can explain the symmetry with the helicity and gauge degrees of freedom. It is shown further that the symmetry of the massless particle can be obtained as a zero-mass limit …
The deformed Dirac equation invariant under the $κ$-Poincaré-Hopf quantum algebra in the context of minimal and scalar couplings under spin and pseudospin symmetries limits is considered. The $κ$-deformed Pauli-Dirac Hamiltonian allows us to study effects of quantum deformation in a class of physical systems, such as an Zeeman-like effect, Aharonov-Bohm effect and an anomalous-like contribution to the electron magnetic moment, between others. In our analysis, we consider the motion of an electron in a uniform magnetic field and interacting with (i) a planar harmonic oscillator and (ii) a linea…
While modern optics is largely a physics of harmonic oscillators and two-by-two matrices, it is possible to learn about some hidden properties of the two-by-two matrix from optical systems. Since two-by-two matrices can be divided into three conjugate classes depending on their traces, optical systems force us to establish continuity from one class to another. It is noted that those three classes are equivalent to three different branches of Wigner's little groups dictating the internal space-time symmetries massive, massless, and imaginary-mass particles. It is shown that the periodic systems…
Topological phases are enriched in non-equilibrium open systems effectively described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. While several properties unique to non-Hermitian topological systems were uncovered, the fundamental role of symmetry in non-Hermitian physics has yet to be fully understood, and it has remained unclear how symmetry protects non-Hermitian topological phases. Here we show that two fundamental anti-unitary symmetries, time-reversal and particle-hole symmetries, are topologically equivalent in the complex energy plane and hence unified in non-Hermitian physics. A striking consequen…
Symmetries of variational problems are considered as symmetries of vector bundle valued exterior differential systems. This approach is then applied to third order ordinary variational equations of motion of the semi-classical spinning particle.
