We study the $1$-level density of low-lying zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions in the family of all characters modulo $q$, with $Q/2 < q\leq Q$. For test functions whose Fourier transform is supported in $(-3/2, 3/2)$, we calculate this quantity beyond the square-root cancellation expansion arising from the $L$-function Ratios Conjecture of Conrey, Farmer and Zirnbauer. We discover the existence of a new lower-order term which is not predicted by this powerful conjecture. This is the first family where the 1-level density is determined well enough to see a term which is not predicted by the Ratios Conjecture, and proves that the exponent of the error term $Q^{-\frac 12 +ε}$ in the Ratios Conjecture is best possible. We also give more precise results when the support of the Fourier Transform of the test function is restricted to the interval $[-1,1]$. Finally we show how natural conjectures on the distribution of primes in arithmetic progressions allow one to extend the support. The most powerful conjecture is Montgomery's, which implies that the Ratios Conjecture's prediction holds for any finite support up to an error $Q^{-\frac 12 +ε}$.
We compute the one-level density for the family of cubic Dirichlet $L$-functions when the support of the Fourier transform of a test function is in $(-1,1)$. We also establish the Ratios conjecture prediction for the one-level density for this family, and confirm that it agrees with the one-level density we obtain.
Let $f:\Z/q\Z\rightarrow\Z$ be such that $f(a)=\pm 1$ for $1\le a<q$, and $f(q)=0$. Then Erdös conjectured that $\sum_{n\ge1}\frac{f(n)}{n} \ne 0$. For $q$ even, this is trivially true. If $q\equiv 3$ ( mod $4$), Murty and Saradha proved the conjecture. We show that this conjecture is true for $82\%$ of the remaining integers $q\equiv 1$ ( mod $4$).
We study the $1$-level density of low-lying zeros of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions by applying the $L$-functions Ratios Conjecture. We observe a transition in the main term as was predicted by the Katz-Sarnak heuristic as well as in the lower order terms when the support of the Fourier transform of the corresponding test function reaches the point $1$. Our results are consistent with those obtained in previous work under GRH and are furthermore analogous to results of Rudnick in the function field case.
For Dirichlet $L$-functions in $\mathbb{F}_q [T]$ we obtain a hybrid Euler-Hadamard product formula. We make a splitting conjecture, namely that the $2k$-th moment of the Dirichlet $L$-functions at $\frac{1}{2}$, averaged over primitive characters of modulus $R$, is asymptotic to (as $\mathrm{deg} R \longrightarrow \infty$) the $2k$-th moment of the Euler product multiplied by the $2k$-th moment of the Hadamard product. We explicitly obtain the main term of the $2k$-th moment of the Euler product, and we conjecture via random matrix theory the main term of the $2k$-th moment of the Hadamard pr…

In this article, we prove an asymptotic formula for mean values of long Dirichlet polynomials with higher order shifted divisor functions, assuming a smoothed additive divisor conjecture for higher order shifted divisor functions. As a consequence of this work, we prove special cases of conjectures of Conrey-Keating on mean values of long Dirichlet polynomials with higher order shifted divisor functions as coefficients.
In this paper, we compute the one-level density of low-lying zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions in a family weighted by special values of Dirichlet $L$-functions at a fixed $s \in [1/2, 1)$. We verify both Fazzari's conjecture and the first author's conjecture on the weighted one-level density for our family of $L$-functions.
We study Euler systems for $\mathbb{G}_m$ over a number field $k$. Motivated by a distribution-theoretic idea of Coleman, we formulate a conjecture regarding the existence of such systems that is elementary to state and yet strictly finer than Kato's equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for Dirichlet $L$-series at $s=0$. To investigate the conjecture, we develop an abstract theory of `Euler limits' and, in particular, prove the existence of canonical `restriction' and `localisation' sequences in this theory. By using this approach we obtain a variety of new results, ranging from a proof, mod…
We establish an analogue of a conjecture of Balasubramanian, Conrey, and Heath-Brown for the family of all Dirichlet characters with conductor up to $Q$. This forms another application of our work in developing an asymptotic large sieve.
We obtain an asymptotic formula for the fourth moment of quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions over $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$, as the base field $\mathbb{F}_q$ is fixed and the genus of the family goes to infinity. According to conjectures of Andrade and Keating, we expect the fourth moment to be asymptotic to $q^{2g+1} P(2g+1)$ up to an error of size $o(q^{2g+1})$, where $P$ is a polynomial of degree $10$ with explicit coefficients. We prove an asymptotic formula with the leading three terms, which agrees with the conjectured result.
We establish lower bounds for the $2k$-th moment of families of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions at the central point for all real $k<0$, assuming a conjecture of S. Chowla on the non-vanishing of these $L$-values.
We discuss how one could study asymptotics of cyclotomic quantities via the mean values of certain multiplicative functions and their Dirichlet series using a theorem of Delange. We show how this could provide a new approach to Artin's conjecture on primitive roots. We focus on whether a fixed prime has a certain order modulo infinitely many other primes. We also give an estimate for the mean value of one such Dirichlet series.
Using the Ratios Conjecture, we write down precise formulas with lower order terms for the one and the two level densities of zeros of quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions over function fields. We denote the various terms arising as Type-$0$, Type-I and Type-II contributions. When the support of the Fourier transform of the test function is sufficiently restricted, we rigorously compute the Type-$0$ and Type-I terms and confirm that they match the conjectured answer. When the restrictions on the support are relaxed, our results suggest that Type-II contributions become important in the two level…
For a rational valued periodic function, we associate a Dirichlet series and provide a new necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing of this Dirichlet series specialized at positive integers. This question was initiated by Chowla, and carried out by Okada for a particular infinite sum. Our approach relies on the decomposition of the Dirichlet characters in terms of primitive characters. Using this, we find some new family of natural numbers for which a conjecture of Erdös holds. We also characterize rational valued periodic functions for which the associated Dirichlet series vanishe…
In the paper we introduce the new approach how to use an orthonormality relation of coefficients of Dirichlet series defining given L-functions from the Selberg class to prove joint universality.
In this paper, we investigate the distribution of the imaginary parts of zeros near the real axis of Dirichlet $L$-functions associated to the quadratic characters $χ_{p}(\cdot)=(\cdot |p)$ with $p$ a prime number. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), we compute the one-level density for the zeros of this family of $L$-functions under the condition that the Fourier transform of the test function is supported on a closed subinterval of $(-1,1)$. We also write down the ratios conjecture for this family of $L$-functions a la Conrey, Farmer and Zirnbauer and derive a conjecture for t…
Assuming a conjecture on distinct zeros of Dirichlet L-functions we get asymptotic results on the average number of representations of an integer as the sum of two primes in arithmetic progression. On the other hand the existence of good error terms gives information on the the location of zeros of L-functions and possible Siegel zeros. Similar results are obtained for an integer in a congruence class expressed as the sum of two primes.
In this paper we consider Dirichlet series absolutely converging for $σ>1$ with an Euler product, natural bounds on the coefficients and satisfying orthogonality relations of Selberg type. Let $N\geq 1$, $F_1(s),...,F_N(s)$ be as above and $P(X_1,...,X_N)$ be a non-monomial polynomial with coefficients in the ring of $p$-finite Dirichlet series absolutely converging for $σ\geq 1$; then $P(F_1(s),\ldots,F_N(s))$ has infinitely many zeros for $σ>1$. Our result in particular applies to Artin $L$-functions, automorphic $L$-functions under the Ramanujan conjecture, and the elements of the Selberg c…
Let $\mathcal E: y^2 = x^3 + A(T)x + B(T)$ be a nontrivial one-parameter family of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}(T)$, with $A(T), B(T) \in \mathbb Z(T)$, and consider the $k$\textsuperscript{th} moments $A_{k,\mathcal{E}}(p) := \sum_{t (p)} a_{\mathcal{E}_t}(p)^k$ of the Dirichlet coefficients $a_{\mathcal{E}_t}(p) := p + 1 - |\mathcal{E}_t (\mathbb{F}_p)|$. Rosen and Silverman proved a conjecture of Nagao relating the first moment $A_{1,\mathcal{E}}(p)$ to the rank of the family over $\mathbb{Q}(T)$, and Michel proved that if $j(T)$ is not constant then the second moment is equal to $A_{2,…
We study the family of Dirichlet $L$-functions of all even primitive characters of conductor at most $Q$, where $Q$ is a parameter tending to $\infty$. For an arbitrary positive integer $k$, we approximate the twisted $2k$th moment of this family by using Dirichlet polynomial approximations of $L^k(s,χ)$ of length $X$, with $Q<X<Q^2$. Assuming the Generalized Lindelöf Hypothesis, we prove an asymptotic formula for these approximations of the twisted moments. Our result agrees with the prediction of Conrey, Farmer, Keating, Rubinstein, and Snaith for this family of $L$-functions, and provides t…
Katz and Sarnak conjectured that the statistics of low-lying zeros of various family of $L$-functions matched with the scaling limit of eigenvalues from the random matrix theory. In this paper we confirm this statistic for a family of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions matches up with corresponding statistic in the random unitary ensemble, in a range that includes the off-diagonal contribution. To estimate the $n$-level density of zeros of the $L$-functions, we use the asymptotic large sieve method developed by Conrey, Iwaniec and Soundararajan. For the random matrix side, a formula from Conrey…
The asymptotic formula of the fourth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions at the central value was predicted in a conjecture by J. B. Conrey, D. W. Farmer, J. P. Keating, M. O. Rubinstein, and N. C. Snaith, and the prime moduli case was proved by M. P. Young in 2011. This work establishes this asymptotic formula for general moduli. The work relies on the study of a special divisor sum function, called $\mathcal{D}_q$-function, which plays a key role in deducing the main terms. Another key ingredient is an application of new bounds for double sums in Kloosterman sums, applied in the estimate of th…
Elliptic curves arise in many important areas of modern number theory. One way to study them is take local data, the number of solutions modulo $p$, and create an $L$-function. The behavior of this global object is related to two of the seven Clay Millennial Problems: the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture and the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. We study one-parameter families over $\mathbb{Q}(T)$, which are of the form $y^2=x^3+A(T)x+B(T)$, with non-constant $j$-invariant. We define the r-th moment of an elliptic curve to be $A_{r,E}(p) := \frac1{p} \sum_{t \bmod p} a_t(p)^r$, where $a_t(p)…
q-Analogues of the Riemann zeta, the Dirichlet L-functions, and a crystal zeta function
We explore the covariance of error terms coming from Weyl's conjecture regarding the number of Dirichlet eigenvalues up to size $X$. We also consider this problem in short intervals, i.e. the error term of the number of eigenvalues in the window $[X, X+S]$ for some $S(X)$. We look at these error terms for planar domains where the Dirichlet eigenvalues can be explicitly calculated. In these cases, the error term is closely related to the error term from the classical lattice points counting problem of expanding planar domains. We give a formula for the covariance of such error terms, for genera…
The set of primes where a hypergeomeric series with rational parameters is $p$-adically bounded is known by [10] to have a Dirichlet density. We establish a formula for this Dirichlet density and conjecture that it is rare for the density to be large. We prove this conjecture for hypergeometric series whose parameters have denominators equal to a prime of the form $p = 2q^r + 1$, where $q$ is an odd prime, by establishing an upper bound on the density of bounded primes in this case. The general case remains open. This paper is the output of an undergraduate research course taught by the first …
We establish several results concerning the expected general phenomenon that, given a multiplicative function $f:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{C}$, the values of $f(n)$ and $f(n+a)$ are "generally" independent unless $f$ is of a "special" form. First, we classify all bounded completely multiplicative functions having uniformly large gaps between its consecutive values. This implies the solution of the following folklore conjecture: for any completely multiplicative function $f:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{T}$ we have $$\liminf_{n\to\infty}|f(n+1)-f(n)|=0.$$ Second, we settle an old conjecture due to N.G. Chuda…
We investigate the ``partition function'' integrals $\int_{-1/2}^{1/2} |ζ(1/2 + it + ih)|^2 dh$ for the critical exponent 2, and the local maxima $\max_{|h| \leq 1/2} |ζ(1/2 + it + ih)|$, as $T \leq t \leq 2T$ varies. In particular, we prove that for $(1+o(1))T$ values of $T \leq t \leq 2T$ we have $\max_{|h| \leq 1/2} \log|ζ(1/2+it+ih)| \leq \log\log T - (3/4 + o(1))\log\log\log T$, matching for the first time with both the leading and second order terms predicted by a conjecture of Fyodorov, Hiary and Keating. The proofs work by approximating the zeta function in mean square by the product o…
On Hilbert-Polya conjecture: Hermitian operator naturally associated to L-functions
Using as starting point a classical integral representation of a L-function we define a familly of two variables extended functions which are eigenfunctions of a Hermitian operator (having imaginary part of zeros as eigenvalues). This Hermitian operator can take also other forms, more symetric. In the case of particular L-functions, like Zeta function or Dirichlet L-functions, the eigenfunctions defined for this operator have symmetry properties. Moreover, for s zero fo Zeta function (or Dirichlet L-function), the associated eigenfunction has a specific property (a part of eigenfunction is can…
We study the $q$-analogue of the average of Montgomery's function $F(α, T)$ over bounded intervals. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for Dirichlet $L$-functions, we obtain upper and lower bounds for this average over an interval that are quite close to the pointwise conjectured value of 1. To compute our bounds, we extend a Fourier analysis approach by Carneiro, Chandee, Chirre, and Milinovich, and apply computational methods of non-smooth programming.
