The Density Conjecture of Katz and Sarnak associates a classical compact group to each reasonable family of $L$-functions. Under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, Rubinstein computed the $n$-level density of low-lying zeros for the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions in the case that the Fourier transform $\hat{f}(u)$ of any test function $f$ is supported in the region $\sum^n_{j=1}u_j < 1$ and showed that the result agrees with the Density Conjecture. In this paper, we improve Rubinstein's result on computing the $n$-level density for the Fourier transform $\hat{f}(u)$ being supported in the region $\sum^n_{j=1}u_j < 2$.
In this paper, we compute the one-level density of low-lying zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions in a family weighted by special values of Dirichlet $L$-functions at a fixed $s \in [1/2, 1)$. We verify both Fazzari's conjecture and the first author's conjecture on the weighted one-level density for our family of $L$-functions.
We compute the one-level density for the family of cubic Dirichlet $L$-functions when the support of the Fourier transform of a test function is in $(-1,1)$. We also establish the Ratios conjecture prediction for the one-level density for this family, and confirm that it agrees with the one-level density we obtain.
We study the $1$-level density of low-lying zeros of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions by applying the $L$-functions Ratios Conjecture. We observe a transition in the main term as was predicted by the Katz-Sarnak heuristic as well as in the lower order terms when the support of the Fourier transform of the corresponding test function reaches the point $1$. Our results are consistent with those obtained in previous work under GRH and are furthermore analogous to results of Rudnick in the function field case.
Katz and Sarnak conjectured that the statistics of low-lying zeros of various family of $L$-functions matched with the scaling limit of eigenvalues from the random matrix theory. In this paper we confirm this statistic for a family of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions matches up with corresponding statistic in the random unitary ensemble, in a range that includes the off-diagonal contribution. To estimate the $n$-level density of zeros of the $L$-functions, we use the asymptotic large sieve method developed by Conrey, Iwaniec and Soundararajan. For the random matrix side, a formula from Conrey…
We study the $1$-level density of low-lying zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions attached to real primitive characters of conductor at most $X$. Under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we give an asymptotic expansion of this quantity in descending powers of $\log X$, which is valid when the support of the Fourier transform of the corresponding even test function $ϕ$ is contained in $(-2,2)$. We uncover a phase transition when the supremum $σ$ of the support of $\hat ϕ$ reaches $1$, both in the main term and in the lower order terms. A new lower order term appearing at $σ=1$ involves the quantity…
Previous work by Rubinstein and Gao computed the n-level densities for families of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions for test functions where the sum of the supports of the Fourier transforms is at most 2, and showed agreement with random matrix theory predictions in this range for n < 4 but only in a restricted range for larger n. We extend these results and show agreement for n < 8, and reduce higher n to a Fourier transform identity. The proof involves adopting a new combinatorial perspective to convert all terms to a canonical form, which facilitates the comparison of the two sides.
In this paper, we prove a one level density result for the low-lying zeros of quadratic Hecke $L$-functions of imaginary quadratic number fields of class number one. As a corollary, we deduce, essentially, that at least $(19-\cot (1/4))/16 = 94.27... \%$ of the $L$-functions under consideration do not vanish at $1/2$.
In this paper, we prove some one level density results for low-lying zeros of families of $L$-functions. More specifically, the families under consideration are that of $L$-functions of holomorphic Hecke eigenforms of level 1 and weight $k$ twisted with quadratic Dirichlet characters and that of cubic and quartic Dirichlet $L$-functions.
In this paper, we prove some one level density results for the low-lying zeros of famliies of quadratic and quartic Hecke $L$-functions of the Gaussian field. As corollaries, we deduce that, respectively, at least $94.27 \%$ and $5\%$ of the members of the quadratic family and the quartic family do not vanish at the central point.
In this paper, we study the one level density of low-lying zeros of a family of quadratic Hecke $L$-functions to prime moduli over the Gaussian field under the generalized Riemann hypothesis (GRH) and the ratios conjecture. As a corollary, we deduce that at least $75 \%$ of the members of this family do not vanish at the central point under GRH.
We establish unconditional sharp upper bounds of the $k$-th moments of the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions at the central point for $0 \leq k \leq 2$.
We establish sharp lower bounds for the $k$-th moment in the range $0 \leq k \leq 1$ of the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions at the central point.
We consider linear statistics of the scaled zeros of Dirichlet $L$--functions, and show that the first few moments converge to the Gaussian moments. The number of Gaussian moments depends on the particular statistic considered. The same phenomenon is found in Random Matrix Theory, where we consider linear statistics of scaled eigenphases for matrices in the unitary group. In that case the higher moments are no longer Gaussian. We conjecture that this also happens for Dirichlet $L$--functions.
In this paper, we apply the ratio conjecture of $L$-functions to derive the lower order terms of the $1$-level density of the low-lying zeros of a family quadratic Hecke $L$-functions in the Gaussian field. Up to the first lower order term, we show that our result is consistent with that obtained from previous work under the generalized Riemann hypothesis, when the Fourier transforms of the test functions are supported in $(-2, 2)$.
An algorithm to compute Dirichlet $L$-functions for many quadratic characters is derived. The algorithm is optimal (up to logarithmic factors) provided that the conductors of the characters under consideration span a dyadic window.
We establish lower bounds for the $2k$-th moment of families of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions at the central point for all real $k<0$, assuming a conjecture of S. Chowla on the non-vanishing of these $L$-values.
We show that for a positive proportion of fundamental discriminants d, L(1/2,chi_d) != 0. Here chi_d is the primitive quadratic Dirichlet character of conductor d.
Given $c,$ a positive integer, we give an explicit formula and an asymptotic formula for \[ \sumχ(c)|L(1,\,χ)|^{2}, \] where $χ$ is the non-trivial Dirichlet character mod $f$ with $f>c.$
In this paper, we obtain asymptotic formulas for weighted first moments of central values of families of primitive quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions whose conductors comprise only primes that split in a given quadratic number field. We then deduce a non-vanishing result of these $L$-functions at the point $s=1/2$.
We show that for a positive proportion of real primitive Dirichlet characters chi, the associated Dirichlet L-function L(s,chi) has no zeros on the positive real axis. Prior to this it was not known whether or not there were infinitely many L-functions (from any family) with no positive real zeros.
In this paper, we establish the expected order of magnitude of the $k$th-moment of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions associated to hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ as well as of prime moduli over a fixed finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ for all real $k \geq 0$.
We study the fourth moment of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions at $s= \frac{1}{2}$. We show an asymptotic formula under the generalized Riemann hypothesis, and obtain a precise lower bound unconditionally. The proofs of these results follow closely arguments of Soundararajan and Young [19] and Soundararajan [17].
The statistics of low-lying zeros of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions were conjectured by Katz and Sarnak to be given by the scaling limit of eigenvalues from the unitary symplectic ensemble. The n-level densities were found to be in agreement with this in a certain neighborhood of the origin in the Fourier domain by Rubinstein in his Ph.D. thesis in 1998. An attempt to extend the neighborhood was made in the Ph.D. thesis of Peng Gao (2005), who under GRH gave the density as a complicated combinatorial factor, but it remained open whether it coincides with the Random Matrix Theory factor. For n…
We develop a hybrid Euler-Hadamard product model for quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions over function fields (following the model introduced by Gonek, Hughes and Keating for the Riemann-zeta function). After computing the first three twisted moments in this family of $L$--functions, we provide further evidence for the conjectural asymptotic formulas for the moments of the family.
In this rather computational paper, we determine certain representation numbers of ideals in real quadratic number fields explicitly in order to obtain a representation of the associated Dirichlet series in terms of Dirichlet L-functions and a generalized divisor sum. A direct and important consequence is that the Dirichlet series has a meromorphic continuation to the whole complex plane and a simple pole at $s=2$ whose residue can be made explicit in terms of the Dirichlet L-functions and the generalized divisor sum.
In this paper, we study the $k$-th moment of central values of the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions of moduli $8p$, with $p$ ranging over odd primes. Assuming the truth of the generlized Riemann hypothesis, we establish sharp upper and lower bounds for the $k$-th power moment of these $L$-values for all real $k \geq 0$.
We obtain an asymptotic formula for the smoothly weighted first moment of primitive quadratic Dirichlet L-functions at the central point, with an error term that is "square-root" of the main term. Our approach uses a recursive technique that feeds the result back into itself, successively improving the error term.
In this paper and its sequel \cite{DPP}, we investigate the precise relationship between the quadratic affine Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series in the sense of \cite{CG1, BD}, and those defined axiomatically by Whitehead \cite{White2} and \cite{White1}. In particular, we show that the axiomatic quadratic Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series of type $D_{\scriptscriptstyle 4}^{\scriptscriptstyle (1)}$ over rational function fields of odd characteristic admits meromorphic continuation to the interior of the corresponding complexified Tits cone. We shall also determine the polar divisor of this…
We study the $1$- or $2$-level density of families of $L$-functions for Hecke--Maass forms over an imaginary quadratic field $F$. For test functions whose Fourier transform is supported in $\left(-\frac 32, \frac 32\right)$, we prove that the $1$-level density for Hecke--Maass forms over $F$ of square-free level $\mathfrak{q}$, as $\mathrm{N}(\mathfrak{q})$ tends to infinity, agrees with that of the orthogonal random matrix ensembles. For Hecke--Maass forms over $F$ of full level, we prove similar statements for the $1$- and $2$-level densities, as the Laplace eigenvalues tends to infinity.
We obtain an asymptotic formula for the fourth moment of quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions over $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$, as the base field $\mathbb{F}_q$ is fixed and the genus of the family goes to infinity. According to conjectures of Andrade and Keating, we expect the fourth moment to be asymptotic to $q^{2g+1} P(2g+1)$ up to an error of size $o(q^{2g+1})$, where $P$ is a polynomial of degree $10$ with explicit coefficients. We prove an asymptotic formula with the leading three terms, which agrees with the conjectured result.
We show, for any $q\ge 3$ and distinct reduced residues $a,b \pmod q$, the existence of certain hypothetical sets of zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions lying off the critical line implies that $π(x;q,a)<π(x;q,b)$ for a set of real $x$ of asymptotic density 1.
Using the Ratios Conjecture, we write down precise formulas with lower order terms for the one and the two level densities of zeros of quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions over function fields. We denote the various terms arising as Type-$0$, Type-I and Type-II contributions. When the support of the Fourier transform of the test function is sufficiently restricted, we rigorously compute the Type-$0$ and Type-I terms and confirm that they match the conjectured answer. When the restrictions on the support are relaxed, our results suggest that Type-II contributions become important in the two level…
Let k be a quadratic field. We give an explicit formula for the Dirichlet series enumerating cubic fields whose quadratic resolvent field is isomorphic to k. Our work is a sequel to previous work of Cohen and Morra, where such formulas are proved in a more general setting, in terms of sums over characters of certain groups related to ray class groups. In the present paper we carry the analysis further and prove explicit formulas for these Dirichlet series over Q. In a companion paper we do the same for quartic fields having a given cubic resolvent. As an application (not present in the initial…
Let Phi be a reduced root system of rank r. A Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series for Phi is a Dirichlet series in r complex variables s_1,...,s_r, initially converging for Re(s_i) sufficiently large, which has meromorphic continuation to C^r and satisfies functional equations under the transformations of C^r corresponding to the Weyl group of Phi. Two constructions of such series are available, one based on summing products of n-th order Gauss sums, the second based on averaging a certain group action over the Weyl group. In this paper we study these constructions and the relationship betwee…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. In this article, we study the number of quadratic residues and non-residues modulo $p$ which are multiples of $2$ or $3$ or $4$ and lying in the interval $[1, p-1]$, by applying the Dirichlet's class number formula for the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$.
