We estimate the $1$-level density of low-lying zeros of $L(s,χ)$ with $χ$ ranging over primitive Dirichlet characters of conductor $\in [Q/2,Q]$ and for test functions whose Fourier transform is supported in $[- 2 - 50/1093, 2 + 50/1093]$. Previously any extension of the support past the range $[-2,2]$ was only known conditionally on deep conjectures about the distribution of primes in arithmetic progressions, beyond the reach of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (e.g Montgomery's conjecture). Our work provides the first example of a family of $L$-functions in which the support is unconditionally extended past the "trivial range" that follows from a simple application of the underlying trace formula (in this case orthogonality of characters). We also highlight consequences for non-vanishing of $L(s,χ)$.
We obtain the extended genus field of an abelian extension of a rational function field. We follow the definition of Anglès and Jaulent, which uses class field theory. First we show that the natural definition of extended genus field of a cyclotomic function field obtained by means of Dirichlet characters is the same as the one given by Anglès and Jaulent. Next we study the extended genus field of a finite abelian extension of a rational function field along the lines of the study of genus fields of abelian extensions of rational function fields and compare this approach with the one given by …
Let v be a multiplicative arithmetic function with support of positive asymptotic density. We prove that for any not identically zero arithmetic function f such that \sum_{f(n) \neq 0} 1 / n < \infty, the support of the Dirichlet convolution f * v possesses a positive asymptotic density. When f is a multiplicative function, we give also a quantitative version of this claim. This generalizes a previous result of P. Pollack and the author, concerning the support of Möbius and Dirichlet transforms of arithmetic functions.
We study the $1$-level density of low-lying zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions attached to real primitive characters of conductor at most $X$. Under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we give an asymptotic expansion of this quantity in descending powers of $\log X$, which is valid when the support of the Fourier transform of the corresponding even test function $ϕ$ is contained in $(-2,2)$. We uncover a phase transition when the supremum $σ$ of the support of $\hat ϕ$ reaches $1$, both in the main term and in the lower order terms. A new lower order term appearing at $σ=1$ involves the quantity…
Let $q\ge3$ be an integer, $χ$ denote a Dirichlet character modulo $q$, for any real number $a\ge 0$, we define the generalized Dirichlet $L$-functions $$ L(s,χ,a)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{χ(n)}{(n+a)^s}, $$ where $s=σ+it$ with $σ>1$ and $t$ both real. It can be extended to all $s$ by analytic continuation. In this paper, we study the mean value properties of the generalized Dirichlet $L$-functions, and obtain several sharp asymptotic formulae by using analytic method.
First we show that the abscissae of uniform and absolute convergence of Dirichlet series coincide in the case of $L$-functions from the Selberg class $\mathcal{S}$. We also study the latter abscissa inside the extended Selberg class, indicating a different behavior in the two classes. Next we address two questions about majorants of functions in $\mathcal{S}$, showing links with the distribution of the zeros and with independence results.
Using the Ratios Conjecture, we write down precise formulas with lower order terms for the one and the two level densities of zeros of quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions over function fields. We denote the various terms arising as Type-$0$, Type-I and Type-II contributions. When the support of the Fourier transform of the test function is sufficiently restricted, we rigorously compute the Type-$0$ and Type-I terms and confirm that they match the conjectured answer. When the restrictions on the support are relaxed, our results suggest that Type-II contributions become important in the two level…
The Density Conjecture of Katz and Sarnak associates a classical compact group to each reasonable family of $L$-functions. Under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, Rubinstein computed the $n$-level density of low-lying zeros for the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions in the case that the Fourier transform $\hat{f}(u)$ of any test function $f$ is supported in the region $\sum^n_{j=1}u_j < 1$ and showed that the result agrees with the Density Conjecture. In this paper, we improve Rubinstein's result on computing the $n$-level density for the Fourier transform $\hat{f}…
We compute the one-level density for the family of cubic Dirichlet $L$-functions when the support of the Fourier transform of a test function is in $(-1,1)$. We also establish the Ratios conjecture prediction for the one-level density for this family, and confirm that it agrees with the one-level density we obtain.
For any integer $m$, the famous Gauss sum $G(m,χ)$ is defined as follows: $$G(m,χ)=\sum_{a=1}^{q}χ(a)e\left(\frac{am}{q}\right), $$ where $e(y)=e^{2πiy}$. The main purpose of this paper is to use the analytic method to study the mean value properties of the generalized Dirichlet $L$-functio…
We study the $1$-level density and the pair correlation of zeros of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions in function fields, as we average over the ensemble $\mathcal{H}_{2g+1}$ of monic, square-free polynomials with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$. In the case of the $1$-level density, when the Fourier transform of the test function is supported in the restricted interval $(\frac{1}{3},1)$, we compute a secondary term of size $q^{-\frac{4g}{3}}/g$, which is not predicted by the Ratios Conjecture. Moreover, when the support is even more restricted, we obtain several lower order terms. For examp…
We study the $1$-level density of low-lying zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions in the family of all characters modulo $q$, with $Q/2 < q\leq Q$. For test functions whose Fourier transform is supported in $(-3/2, 3/2)$, we calculate this quantity beyond the square-root cancellation expansion arising from the $L$-function Ratios Conjecture of Conrey, Farmer and Zirnbauer. We discover the existence of a new lower-order term which is not predicted by this powerful conjecture. This is the first family where the 1-level density is determined well enough to see a term which is not predicted by the Rati…
We investigate the reciprocity law, studied by Conrey~\cite{Con07} and Young~\cite{You11a}, for the second moment of Dirichlet L-functions twisted by $χ(a)$ modulo a prime $q$. We show that the error term in this reciprocity law can be extended to a continuous function of $a/q$ with respect to the real topology. Furthermore, we extend this reciprocity result, proving an exact formula involving also shifted moments. We also give an expression for the twisted second moment involving the coefficients of the continued fraction expansion of $a/q$, and, consequently, we improve upon a classical resu…
Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series are Dirichlet series in $r$ complex variables, with analytic continuation to $\mathbb{C}^r$ and a group of functional equations isomorphic to the Weyl group of a reduced root system of rank $r$. Such series may be defined for any global field $K$, but in the case when $K$ is an algebraic function field they are expected to be, up to a variable change, rational functions in several variables. We verify the rationality of these functions in the case when $K=\mathbb{F}_q(T)$, and describe the denominators and support of the numerators.
We compute the one-level density of zeros of order $\ell$ Dirichlet $L$-functions over function fields $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ for $\ell=3,4$ in the Kummer setting ($q\equiv1\pmod{\ell}$) and for $\ell=3,4,6$ in the non-Kummer setting ($q\not\equiv1\pmod{\ell}$). In each case, we obtain a main term predicted by Random Matrix Theory (RMT) and lower order terms not predicted by RMT. We also confirm the symmetry type of the families is unitary, supporting Katz and Sarnak's philosophy.
We study the $1$-level density of low-lying zeros of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions by applying the $L$-functions Ratios Conjecture. We observe a transition in the main term as was predicted by the Katz-Sarnak heuristic as well as in the lower order terms when the support of the Fourier transform of the corresponding test function reaches the point $1$. Our results are consistent with those obtained in previous work under GRH and are furthermore analogous to results of Rudnick in the function field case.
In the present work we give the construction of the genus field and the extended genus field of an elementary abelian $l$-extension of a field of rational functions, where $l$ is a prime number. In the Kummer case, if $K$ is contained in a cyclotomic funtion field, the construction is given using Leopoldt's ideas by means of Dirichlet characters. Following the definition of Anglès and Jaulent of extended Hilbert class field, we obtain the extended genus field of an elementary abelian $l$-extension of a field of rational functions.
We show that a class of Dirichlet series ${\mathfrak{A}}^{\#}$ that is much larger than the extended Selberg class ${\mathscr{S}}^{\#}$, and also contains the standard as well as the tensor product, exterior square and symmetric square $L$-functions of automorphic $L$-functions of $GL_n$ over number fields, does not have any elements of degrees between $1$ and $2$. The proof of our more general theorem is very different from the proof of Kaczorowski and Perelli for the class ${\mathscr{S}}^{\#}$, and is much shorter and simpler even in that case.
Let $π_{q,a}(x)$ denote the number of primes $\le x$ in the progression $a$ modulo $q$. We study subtle inequities in these functions, with $q$ fixed and variable $a$ (sometimes called 'prime race problems'). It is known unconditionally for many triples $(q,a,b)$ that the difference $π_{q,a}(x) - π_{q,b}(x)$ changes sign infinitely often, although there may be a pronounced bias toward one sign (first observed by Chebyshev in 1853). Similar results for the comparison of three or more prime counting functions all require the assumption of ERH (extended Riemann Hypothesis for the Dirichlet L-func…
For Dirichlet $L$-functions in $\mathbb{F}_q [T]$ we obtain a hybrid Euler-Hadamard product formula. We make a splitting conjecture, namely that the $2k$-th moment of the Dirichlet $L$-functions at $\frac{1}{2}$, averaged over primitive characters of modulus $R$, is asymptotic to (as $\mathrm{deg} R \longrightarrow \infty$) the $2k$-th moment of the Euler product multiplied by the $2k$-th moment of the Hadamard product. We explicitly obtain the main term of the $2k$-th moment of the Euler product, and we conjecture via random matrix theory the main term of the $2k$-th moment of the Hadamard pr…
Previous work by Rubinstein and Gao computed the n-level densities for families of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions for test functions where the sum of the supports of the Fourier transforms is at most 2, and showed agreement with random matrix theory predictions in this range for n < 4 but only in a restricted range for larger n. We extend these results and show agreement for n < 8, and reduce higher n to a Fourier transform identity. The proof involves adopting a new combinatorial perspective to convert all terms to a canonical form, which facilitates the comparison of the two sides.
Random matrix theory has successfully modeled many systems in physics and mathematics, and often the analysis and results in one area guide development in the other. Hughes and Rudnick computed $1$-level density statistics for low-lying zeros of the family of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions of fixed prime conductor $Q$, as $Q \to \infty$, and verified the unitary symmetry predicted by random matrix theory. We compute $1$- and $2$-level statistics of the analogous family of Dirichlet $L$-functions over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$. Whereas the Hughes-Rudnick results were restricted by the support of the…
In this paper, we investigate the distribution of the imaginary parts of zeros near the real axis of Dirichlet $L$-functions associated to the quadratic characters $χ_{p}(\cdot)=(\cdot |p)$ with $p$ a prime number. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), we compute the one-level density for the zeros of this family of $L$-functions under the condition that the Fourier transform of the test function is supported on a closed subinterval of $(-1,1)$. We also write down the ratios conjecture for this family of $L$-functions a la Conrey, Farmer and Zirnbauer and derive a conjecture for t…
In 1956, Tong established an asymptotic formula for the mean square of the error term in the summatory function of the Piltz divisor function $d_3(n).$ The aim of this paper is to generalize Tong's method to a class of Dirichlet series that satisfy a functional equation. As an application, we can establish the asymptotic formulas for the mean square of the error terms for a class of functions in the well-known Selberg class. The Tong-type identity and formula established in this paper can be viewed as an analogue of the well-known Voronoï's formula.
Using the Dirichlet theorem on the equidistribution of residue classes modulo $q$ and the Lemke Oliver-Soundararajan conjecture on the distribution of pairs of residues on consecutive primes, we show that the domain of convergence of the infinite product of Dirichlet $L$-functions of non-principal characters can be extended from $\Re(s) > 1$ down to $\Re(s) > \half$, without encountering any zeros before reaching this critical line. The possibility of doing so can be traced back to a universal diffusive random walk behavior $C_N = {\cal O}(N^{1/2})$ of the series $C_N = \sum_{n=1}^N χ(p_n)$ ov…
