In his affirmative answer to the Edelman-Reiner conjecture, Yoshinaga proved that the logarithmic derivation modules of the cones of the extended Shi arrangements are free modules. However, all we know about the bases is their existence and degrees. In this article, we introduce two distinguished bases for the modules. More specifically, we will define and study the simple-root basis plus (SRB+) and the simple-root basis minus (SRB-) when a primitive derivation is fixed. They have remarkable properties relevant to the simple roots and those properties characterize the bases.
A hyperplane arrangement is said to satisfy the ``Riemann hypothesis'' if all roots of its characteristic polynomial have the same real part. This property was conjectured by Postnikov and Stanley for certain families of arrangements which are defined for any irreducible root system and was proved for the root system $A_{n-1}$. The proof is based on an explicit formula for the characteristic polynomial, which is of independent combinatorial significance. Here our previous derivation of this formula is simplified and extended to similar formulae for all but the exceptional root systems. The con…
The (extended) Linial arrangement $\mathcal{L}_Φ^m$ is a certain finite truncation of the affine Weyl arrangement of a root system $Φ$ with a parameter $m$. Postnikov and Stanley conjectured that all roots of the characteristic polynomial of $\mathcal{L}_Φ^m$ have the same real part, and this has been proved for the root systems of classical types. In this paper we prove that the conjecture is true for exceptional root systems when the parameter $m$ is sufficiently large. The proof is based on representations of the characteristic quasi-polynomials in terms of Eulerian polynomials.
Terao's factorization theorem shows that if an arrangement is free, then its characteristic polynomial factors into the product of linear polynomials over the integer ring. This is not a necessary condition, but there are not so many non-free arrangements whose characteristic polynomial factors over the integer ring. On the other hand, the localization of a free arrangement is free, and its restriction is in many cases free, thus its characteristic polynomial factors. In this paper, we consider how their integer, or real roots behave.
We prove that the posets of connected components of intersections of toric and elliptic arrangements defined by root systems are EL-shellable and we compute their homotopy type. Our method rests on Bibby's description of such posets by means of "labeled partitions": after giving an EL-labeling and counting homology chains for general posets of labeled partitions, we obtain the stated results by considering the appropriate subposets.
We study the connection between triangulations of a type $A$ root polytope and the resonance arrangement, a hyperplane arrangement that shows up in a surprising number of contexts. Despite an elementary definition for the resonance arrangement, the number of resonance chambers has only been computed up to the $n=8$ dimensional case. We focus on data structures for labeling chambers, such as sign vectors and sets of alternating trees, with an aim at better understanding the structure of the resonance arrangement, and, in particular, enumerating its chambers. Along the way, we make connections w…
Extending earlier work by Sommers and Tymoczko, in 2016 Abe, Barakat, Cuntz, Hoge, and Terao established that each arrangement of ideal type $\mathcal{A}_\mathcal{I}$ stemming from an ideal $\mathcal{I}$ in the set of positive roots of a reduced root system is free. Recently, Röhrle showed that a large class of the $\mathcal{A}_\mathcal{I}$ satisfy the stronger property of inductive freeness and conjectured that this property holds for all $\mathcal{A}_\mathcal{I}$. In this article, we confirm this conjecture.
We compute the cohomology of the complement of toric arrangements associated to root systems as representations of the corresponding Weyl groups. Specifically, we develop an algorithm for computing the cohomology of the complement of toric arrangements associated to general root systems and we carry out this computation for the exceptional root systems $G_2$, $F_4$, $E_6$ and $E_7$. We also compute the total cohomology of the complement of the toric arrangement associated to $A_n$ as a representation of the Weyl group and give a formula for its Poincaré polynomial.
For a crystallographic root system, dominant regions in the Catalan hyperplane arrangement are in bijection with antichains in a partial order on the positive roots. For a noncrystallographic root system, the analogous arrangement and regions have importance in the representation theory of an associated graded Hecke algebra. Since there is also an analogous root order, it is natural to hope that a similar bijection can be used to understand these regions. We show that such a bijection does hold for type $H_3$ and for type $I_2(m)$, including arbitrary ratio of root lengths when $m$ is even, bu…
A root ideal arrangement $A_I$ is the set of reflecting hyperplanes corresponding to the roots in an order ideal $I$ of the root poset on the positive roots of a finite crystallographic root system. A characterisation of supersolvable root ideal arrangements is obtained. Namely, $A_I$ is supersolvable if and only if $I$ is chain peelable, meaning that it is possible to reach the empty poset from $I$ by in each step removing a maximal chain which is also an order filter. In particular, supersolvability is preserved under taking subideals. We identify the minimal ideals that correspond to non-su…
We study a relation between roots of characteristic polynomials and intersection points of line arrangements. Using these results, we obtain a lot of applications for line arrangements. Namely, we give (i) a generalized addition theorem for line arrangements, (ii) a generalization of Faenzi-Vallès' theorem over a field of arbitrary characteristic, (iii) a partial result on the conjecture of Terao of line arrangements, and (iv) a new sufficient condition for freeness over finite fields. Also, a higher dimensional version of main results is considered.
Let $q$ be a positive integer. In our recent paper, we proved that the cardinality of the complement of an integral arrangement, after the modulo $q$ reduction, is a quasi-polynomial of $q$, which we call the characteristic quasi-polynomial. In this paper, we study general properties of the characteristic quasi-polynomial as well as discuss two important examples: the arrangements of reflecting hyperplanes arising from irreducible root systems and the mid-hyperplane arrangements. In the root system case, we present a beautiful formula for the generating function of the characteristic quasi-pol…
The Tutte polynomial is originally a bivariate polynomial enumerating the colorings of a graph and of its dual graph. But it reveals more of the internal structure of the graph like its number of forests, of spanning subgraphs, and of acyclic orientations. In 2007, Ardila extended the notion of Tutte polynomial to the hyperplane arrangements, and computed the Tutte polynomials of the classical root systems for a certain prime power of the first variable. In this article, we compute Tutte polynomials of ideal arrangements. Those arrangements were introduced in 2006 by Sommers and Tymoczko, and …
A characteristic polynomial is an important invariant in the field of hyperplane arrangement. For the Linial arrangement of any irreducible root system, Postnikov and Stanley conjectured that all roots of the characteristic polynomial have the same real part. In relation to this conjecture, Yoshinaga obtained an explicit relationship between the characteristic quasi-polynomial and the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial for the fundamental alcove. In this paper, we calculate Yoshinaga's explicit formula through the decomposition of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial into several quasi-polynomials and a modifie…
From a root system, one may consider the arrangement of reflecting hyperplanes, as well as its toric and elliptic analogues. The corresponding Weyl group acts on the complement of the arrangement and hence on its cohomology. We consider a sequence of linear, toric, or elliptic arrangements which arise from a family of root systems of type A, B, C, or D, and we show that the rational cohomology stabilizes as a sequence of Weyl group representations. Our techniques combine a Leray spectral sequence argument similar to that of Church in the type A case along with FI$_W$-module theory which Wilson…
We introduce the simple notion of a "crystallographic arrangement" and prove a one-to-one correspondence between these arrangements and the connected simply connected Cartan schemes for which the real roots are a finite root system (up to equivalence on both sides). We thus obtain a more accessible definition for this very large subclass of the class of simplicial arrangements for which a complete classification is known.
Given the toric (or toral) arrangement defined by a root system $Φ$, we describe the poset of its layers (connected components of intersections) and we count its elements. Indeed we show how to reduce to zero-dimensional layers, and in this case we provide an explicit formula involving the maximal subdiagrams of the affine Dynkin diagram of $Φ$. Then we compute the Euler characteristic and the Poincare' polynomial of the complement of the arrangement, which is the set of regular points of the torus.
We show that the hyperplane arrangement of a coconvex set in a finite root system is free if and only if it is free in corank 4. As a consequence, we show that the inversion arrangement of a Weyl group element w is free if and only if w avoids a finite list of root system patterns. As a key part of the proof, we use a recent theorem of Abe and Yoshinaga to show that if the root system does not contain any factors of type C or F, then Peterson translation of coconvex sets preserves freeness. This also allows us to give a Kostant-Shapiro-Steinberg rule for the coexponents of a free inversion arr…
In 2006 Sommers and Tymoczko defined so called arrangements of ideal type A_I stemming from ideals I in the set of positive roots of a reduced root system. They showed in a case by case argument that A_I is free if the root system is of classical type or G_2 and conjectured that this is also the case for all types. This was established only recently in a uniform manner by Abe, Barakat, Cuntz, Hoge and Terao. The set of non-zero exponents of the free arrangement A_I is given by the dual of the height partition of the roots in the complement of I in the set of positive roots, generalizing the Sh…
Let $\be$ be a Borel subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra $\g$. An ideal of $\be$ is called ad-nilpotent, if it is contained in $[\be,\be]$. The generators of an ad-nilpotent ideal give rise to an antichain in the poset of positive roots, and the whole theory can be expressed in a combinatorial fashion, in terms of antichains. The aim of this paper is to present a refinement of the enumerative theory of ad-nilpotent ideals for the case in which $\g$ has roots of different length. An antichain is called short, if it consists of short roots. We obtain, for short antichains, analogues of al…
A Weyl arrangement is the arrangement defined by the root system of a finite Weyl group. When a set of positive roots is an ideal in the root poset, we call the corresponding arrangement an ideal subarrangement. Our main theorem asserts that any ideal subarrangement is a free arrangement and that its exponents are given by the dual partition of the height distribution, which was conjectured by Sommers-Tymoczko. In particular, when an ideal subarrangement is equal to the entire Weyl arrangement, our main theorem yields the celebrated formula by Shapiro, Steinberg, Kostant, and Macdonald. Our pr…
The Shi arrangement is an affine arrangement of hyperplanes consisting of the hyperplanes of the Weyl arrangement and their parallel translations. It was introduced by J.-Y. Shi in the study of the Kazhdan-Lusztig representation of the affine Weyl groups. M. Yoshinaga showed that the cone over every Shi arrangement is free. In this paper, we construct an explicit basis for the derivation module of the cone over the Shi arrangements of the type $B_{\ell}$ or $C_{\ell}$.
In this article we prove that the ideal-Shi arrangements are free central arrangements of hyperplanes satisfying the dual-partition formula. Then it immediately follows that there exists a saturated free filtration of the cone of any affine Weyl arrangement such that each filter is a free subarrangement satisfying the dual-partition formula. This generalizes the main result in \cite{ABCHT} which affirmatively settled a conjecture by Sommers and Tymoczko \cite{SomTym}.
This paper is about two arrangements of hyperplanes. The first --- the Shi arrangement --- was introduced by Jian-Yi Shi to describe the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in the affine Weyl group of type $A$. The second --- the Ish arrangement --- was recently defined by the first author who used the two arrangements together to give a new interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers of Garsia and Haiman. In the present paper we will define a mysterious "combinatorial symmetry" between the two arrangements and show that this symmetry preserves a great deal of information. For example, the Shi and Ish arran…
The Shi arrangement ${\mathcal S}_n$ is the arrangement of affine hyperplanes in ${\mathbb R}^n$ of the form $x_i - x_j = 0$ or $1$, for $1 \leq i < j \leq n$. It dissects ${\mathbb R}^n$ into $(n+1)^{n-1}$ regions, as was first proved by Shi. We give a simple bijective proof of this result. Our bijection generalizes easily to any subarrangement of ${\mathcal S}_n$ containing the hyperplanes $x_i - x_j = 0$ and to the extended Shi arrangements.
We classify affine rank three Tits arrangements whose roots are contained in the locus of a homogeneous cubic polynomial. We find that there exist irreducible affine Tits arrangements which are not locally spherical.
In [9], Terao proved the freeness of multi-Coxeter arrangements with constant multiplicities by giving an explicit construction of bases. Combining it with algebro-geometric method, Yoshinaga proved the freeness of the extended Catalan and Shi arrangements in [11]. However, there have been no explicit constructions of the bases for the logarithmic derivation modules of the extended Catalan and Shi arrangements. In this paper, we give the first explicit construction of them when the root system is of the type $A_2$.
The braid arrangement is the Coxeter arrangement of the type $A_\ell$. The Shi arrangement is an affine arrangement of hyperplanes consisting of the hyperplanes of the braid arrangement and their parallel translations. In this paper, we give an explicit basis construction for the derivation module of the cone over the Shi arrangement. The essential ingredient of our recipe is the Bernoulli polynomials.
Associated with the $r$-Shi arrangement and $r$-Catalan arrangement in $\Bbb{R}^n$, we introduce a cubic matrix for each region to establish two bijections in a uniform way. Firstly, the positions of minimal positive entries in column slices of the cubic matrix will give a bijection from regions of the $r$-Shi arrangement to $O$-rooted labeled $r$-trees. Secondly, the numbers of positive entries in column slices of the cubic matrix will give a bijection from regions of the $r$-Catalan arrangement to pairings of permutation and $r$-Dyck path. Moreover, the numbers of positive entries in row sli…
The {\sf Shi hyperplane arrangement} Shi(n) was introduced by Shi to study the Kazhdan-Lusztig cellular structure of the affine symmetric group. The {\sf Ish hyperplane arrangement} Ish(n) was introduced by Armstrong in the study of diagonal harmonics. Armstrong and Rhoades discovered a deep combinatorial similarity between the Shi and Ish arrangements. We solve a collection of problems posed by Armstrong and Armstrong-Rhoades by giving bijections between regions of Shi(n) and Ish(n) which preserve certain statistics. Our bijections generalize to the `deleted arrangements' Shi(G) and Ish(G) wh…
Many combinatorial and topological invariants of a hyperplane arrangement can be computed in terms of its Tutte polynomial. Similarly, many invariants of a hypertoric arrangement can be computed in terms of its arithmetic Tutte polynomial. We compute the arithmetic Tutte polynomials of the classical root systems of types A,B,C, and D, with respect to their integer, root, and weight lattices. We do it in two ways: by introducing a finite field method for arithmetic Tutte polynomials, and by enumerating signed graphs with respect to six parameters.
The number of flats of a hyperplane arrangement is considered as a generalization of the Bell number and the Stirling number of the second kind. Robert Gill gave the exponential generating function of the number of flats of the extended Catalan arrangements, using species. In this article, we introduce the species of flats of the extended Catalan and Shi arrangements and they are given by iterated substitution of species of sets and lists. Moreover, we enumerate the flats of these arrangements in terms of infinite matrices.
We extend the Shi bijection from the Borel subalgebra case to parabolic subalgebras. In the process, the $I$-deleted Shi arrangement $\texttt{Shi}(I)$ naturally emerges. This arrangement interpolates between the Coxeter arrangement $\texttt{Cox}$ and the Shi arrangement $\texttt{Shi}$, and breaks the symmetry of $\texttt{Shi}$ in a certain symmetrical way. Among other things, we determine the characteristic polynomial $χ(\texttt{Shi}(I), t)$ of $\texttt{Shi}(I)$ explicitly for $A_{n-1}$ and $C_n$. More generally, let $\texttt{Shi}(G)$ be an arbitrary arrangement between $\texttt{Cox}$ and $\te…

In 1986, Shi derived the famous formula $(n+1)^{n-1}$ for the number of regions of the Shi arrangement, a hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$. There are at least two different bijective explanations of this formula, one by Pak and Stanley, another by Athanasiadis and Linusson. In 1996, Athanasiadis used the finite field method to derive a formula for the number of $k$-dimensional faces of the Shi arrangement for any $k$. Until now, the formula of Athanasiadis did not have a bijective explanation. In this paper, we extend a bijection for regions defined by Bernardi to obtain a bijection be…
The number of regions of the type A_{n-1} Shi arrangement in R^n is counted by the intrinsically beautiful formula (n+1)^{n-1}. First proved by Shi, this result motivated Pak and Stanley as well as Athanasiadis and Linusson to provide bijective proofs. We give a description of the Athanasiadis-Linusson bijection and generalize it to a bijection between the regions of the type C_n Shi arrangement in R^n and sequences a_1a_2...a_n, where a_i \in \{-n, -n+1,..., -1, 0, 1,..., n-1, n\}, i \in [n]. Our bijections naturally restrict to bijections between regions of the arrangements with a certain nu…
We translate the axioms of a Weyl groupoid with (not necessarily finite) root system in terms of arrangements. The result is a correspondence between Weyl groupoids permitting a root system and Tits arrangements satisfying an integrality condition which we call the crystallographic property.
Hyperplanes of the form x_j = x_i + c are called affinographic. For an affinographic hyperplane arrangement in R^n, such as the Shi arrangement, we study the function f(M) that counts integral points in [1,M]^n that do not lie in any hyperplane of the arrangement. We show that f(M) is a piecewise polynomial function of positive integers M, composed of terms that appear gradually as M increases. Our approach is to convert the problem to one of counting integral proper colorations of a rooted integral gain graph. An application is to interval coloring in which the interval of available colors fo…
In 1983, Lusztig defined a map $σ$ from affine permutations of $n$ to partitions of $n$. He conjectured that for any partition $λ$ of $n$, $σ^{-1}(λ)$ is a two-sided cell. Shi, in 1986, proved part of this conjecture. As a byproduct, he introduced the Shi arrangement of hyperplanes and found a few of its remarkable properties. The Shi arrangement has since become a central object in algebraic combinatorics. This article is intended to be a fairly gentle introduction to the Shi arrangement, intended for readers with a modest background in combinatorics, algebra, and Euclidean geometry.
Let $W$ be a finite Weyl group and $\A$ be the corresponding Weyl arrangement. A deformation of $\A$ is an affine arrangement which is obtained by adding to each hyperplane $H\in\A$ several parallel translations of $H$ by the positive root (and its integer multiples) perpendicular to $H$. We say that a deformation is $W$-equivariant if the number of parallel hyperplanes of each hyperplane $H\in \A$ depends only on the $W$-orbit of $H$. We prove that the conings of the $W$-equivariant deformations are free arrangements under a Shi-Catalan condition and give a formula for the number of chambers.…
We introduce a partition of (coweight) lattice points inside the dilated fundamental parallelepiped into those of partially closed simplices. This partition can be considered as a generalization and a lattice points interpretation of the classical formula of Worpitzky. This partition, and the generalized Eulerian polynomial, recently introduced by Lam and Postnikov, can be used to describe the characteristic (quasi)polynomials of Shi and Linial arrangements. As an application, we prove that the characteristic quasi-polynomial of the Shi arrangement turns out to be a polynomial. We also present…
We give a Cayley type formula to count the number of spanning trees in the complete r-uniform hypergraph for all r >= 3. Similar to the bijection between spanning trees in complete graphs and Parking functions, we derive a bijection from spanning trees of the complete (r+1)-uniform hypergraph which arise from a fixed r-perfect matching and r-Parking functions. We observe a simple consequence of this bijection in terms of the number of regions of the extended Shi arrangement.
Let $Φ$ be an irreducible crystallographic root system with Weyl group $W$ and coroot lattice $\check{Q}$, spanning a Euclidean space $V$. Let $m$ be a positive integer and $\aA^m_Φ$ be the arrangement of hyperplanes in $V$ of the form $(α, x) = k$ for $α\in Φ$ and $k = 0, 1,...,m$. It is known that the number $N^+ (Φ, m)$ of bounded dominant regions of $\aA^m_Φ$ is equal to the number of facets of the positive part $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$ of the generalized cluster complex associated to the pair $(Φ, m)$ by S. Fomin and N. Reading. We define a statistic on the set of bounded dominant regions of $\aA^m_Φ$…
It is an open question to give a combinatorial interpretation of the Falk invariant of a hyperplane arrangement, i.e. the third rank of successive quotients in the lower central series of the fundamental group of the arrangement. In this article, we give a combinatorial formula for this invariant in the case of hyperplane arrangements that are complete lift representation of certain gain graphs. As a corollary, we compute the Falk invariant for the cone of the braid, Shi, Linial and semiorder arrangements.
