We give a Cayley type formula to count the number of spanning trees in the complete r-uniform hypergraph for all r >= 3. Similar to the bijection between spanning trees in complete graphs and Parking functions, we derive a bijection from spanning trees of the complete (r+1)-uniform hypergraph which arise from a fixed r-perfect matching and r-Parking functions. We observe a simple consequence of this bijection in terms of the number of regions of the extended Shi arrangement.
The Shi arrangement ${\mathcal S}_n$ is the arrangement of affine hyperplanes in ${\mathbb R}^n$ of the form $x_i - x_j = 0$ or $1$, for $1 \leq i < j \leq n$. It dissects ${\mathbb R}^n$ into $(n+1)^{n-1}$ regions, as was first proved by Shi. We give a simple bijective proof of this result. Our bijection generalizes easily to any subarrangement of ${\mathcal S}_n$ containing the hyperplanes $x_i - x_j = 0$ and to the extended Shi arrangements.
Flips of diagonals in colored triangle-free triangulations of a convex polygon are interpreted as moves between two adjacent chambers in a certain graphic hyperplane arrangement. Properties of geodesics in the associated flip graph are deduced. In particular, it is shown that: (1) every diagonal is flipped exactly once in a geodesic between distinguished pairs of antipodes; (2) the number of geodesics between these antipodes is equal to twice the number of Young tableaux of a truncated shifted staircase shape.
A subspace arrangement defined by intersections of hyperplanes of the braid arrangement can be encoded by an edge colored hypergraph. It turns out that the characteristic polynomial of this type of subspace arrangement is given by a generalized chromatic polynomial of the associated edge colored hypergraph. The main result of this paper supplies a sufficient condition for the existence of non-trivial Massey products of the subspace arrangements complex complement. This is accomplished by studying a spectral sequence associated to the Lie coalgebras of Sinha and Walter.
Hyperplanes of the form x_j = x_i + c are called affinographic. For an affinographic hyperplane arrangement in R^n, such as the Shi arrangement, we study the function f(M) that counts integral points in [1,M]^n that do not lie in any hyperplane of the arrangement. We show that f(M) is a piecewise polynomial function of positive integers M, composed of terms that appear gradually as M increases. Our approach is to convert the problem to one of counting integral proper colorations of a rooted integral gain graph. An application is to interval coloring in which the interval of available colors fo…
Athanasiadis introduced separating walls for a region in the extended Shi arrangement and used them to generalize the Narayana numbers. In this paper, we fix a hyperplane in the extended Shi arrangement for type A and calculate the number of dominant regions which have the fixed hyperplane as a separating wall; that is, regions where the hyperplane supports a facet of the region and separates the region from the origin.
We give an interpretation of the coefficients of the two variable refinement $D_{\Sh_n}(q,t)$ of the distance enumerator of the Shi hyperplane arrangement $\Sh_n$ in $n$ dimensions. This two variable refinement was defined by Stanley \cite{stan-rota} for the general $r$-extended Shi hyperplane arrangements. We give an interpretation when $r=1$. We define three natural three-dimensional partitions of the number $(n+1)^{n-1}$. The first arises from parking functions of length $n$, the second from special posets on $n$ vertices defined by Athanasiadis and the third from spanning trees on $n+1$ ve…
Let $W$ be a finite Weyl group and $\A$ be the corresponding Weyl arrangement. A deformation of $\A$ is an affine arrangement which is obtained by adding to each hyperplane $H\in\A$ several parallel translations of $H$ by the positive root (and its integer multiples) perpendicular to $H$. We say that a deformation is $W$-equivariant if the number of parallel hyperplanes of each hyperplane $H\in \A$ depends only on the $W$-orbit of $H$. We prove that the conings of the $W$-equivariant deformations are free arrangements under a Shi-Catalan condition and give a formula for the number of chambers.…
The Shi arrangement is an affine arrangement of hyperplanes consisting of the hyperplanes of the Weyl arrangement and their parallel translations. It was introduced by J.-Y. Shi in the study of the Kazhdan-Lusztig representation of the affine Weyl groups. M. Yoshinaga showed that the cone over every Shi arrangement is free. In this paper, we construct an explicit basis for the derivation module of the cone over the Shi arrangements of the type $B_{\ell}$ or $C_{\ell}$.
We show new bijective proofs of previously known formulas for the number of regions of some deformations of the braid arrangement, by means of a bijection between the no-broken-circuit sets of the corresponding integral gain graphs and some kinds of labelled binary trees. This leads to new bijective proofs for the Shi, Catalan, and similar hyperplane arrangements.
Back in the nineties Pak and Stanley introduced a labeling of the regions of a k-Shi arrangement by k-parking functions and proved its bijectivity. Duval, Klivans, and Martin considered a modification of this construction associated with a graph G. They introduced the G-Shi arrangement and a labeling of its regions by G-parking functions. They conjectured that their labeling is surjective, i.e. that every G-parking function appears as a label of a region of the G-Shi arrangement. Later Hopkins and Perkinson proved this conjecture. In particular, this provided a new proof of the bijectivity of …
Originally in 1954 the Tutte polynomial was a bivariate polynomial associated to a graph in order to enumerate the colorings of this graph and of its dual graph at the same time. However the Tutte polynomial reveals more of the internal structure of a graph, and contains even other specializations from other sciences like the Jones polynomial in Knot theory, the partition function of the Pott model in statistical physics, and the reliability polynomial in network theory. In this article, we study the Tutte polynomial associated to more general objects which are the arrangements of hyperplanes.…
The {\sf Shi hyperplane arrangement} Shi(n) was introduced by Shi to study the Kazhdan-Lusztig cellular structure of the affine symmetric group. The {\sf Ish hyperplane arrangement} Ish(n) was introduced by Armstrong in the study of diagonal harmonics. Armstrong and Rhoades discovered a deep combinatorial similarity between the Shi and Ish arrangements. We solve a collection of problems posed by Armstrong and Armstrong-Rhoades by giving bijections between regions of Shi(n) and Ish(n) which preserve certain statistics. Our bijections generalize to the `deleted arrangements' Shi(G) and Ish(G) wh…
We introduce a new family of hyperplane arrangements in dimension $n\geq3$ that includes both the Shi arrangement and the Ish arrangement. We prove that all the members of a given subfamily have the same number of regions - the connected components of the complement of the union of the hyperplanes - which can be bijectively labeled with the Pak-Stanley labeling. In addition, we show that, in the cases of the Shi and the Ish arrangements, the number of labels with reverse centers of a given length is equal, and conjecture that the same happens with all of the members of the family.
The braid arrangement is the Coxeter arrangement of the type $A_\ell$. The Shi arrangement is an affine arrangement of hyperplanes consisting of the hyperplanes of the braid arrangement and their parallel translations. In this paper, we give an explicit basis construction for the derivation module of the cone over the Shi arrangement. The essential ingredient of our recipe is the Bernoulli polynomials.
In 2003, Haglund's {\sf bounce} statistic gave the first combinatorial interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers and the Hilbert series of diagonal harmonics. In this paper we propose a new combinatorial interpretation in terms of the affine Weyl group of type $A$. In particular, we define two statistics on affine permutations; one in terms of the Shi hyperplane arrangement, and one in terms of a new arrangement - which we call the Ish arrangement. We prove that our statistics are equivalent to the {\sf area'} and {\sf bounce} statistics of Haglund and Loehr. In this setting, we observe that…
Given a simplicial hyperplane arrangement H and a subspace arrangement A embedded in H, we define a simplicial complex Delta_{A,H} as the subdivision of the link of A induced by H. In particular, this generalizes Steingrimsson's coloring complex of a graph. We do the following: (1) When A is a hyperplane arrangement, Delta_{A,H} is shown to be shellable. As a special case, we answer affirmatively a question of Steingrimsson on coloring complexes. (2) For H being a Coxeter arrangement of type A or B we obtain a close connection between the Hilbert series of the Stanley-Reisner ring of Delta_{A,…
A gain graph is a graph whose edges are labelled invertibly by "gains" from a group. "Switching" is a transformation of gain graphs that generalizes conjugation in a group. A "weak chromatic function" of gain graphs with gains in a fixed group satisfies three laws: deletion-contraction for links with neutral gain, invariance under switching, and nullity on graphs with a neutral loop. The laws lead to the "weak chromatic group" of gain graphs, which is the universal domain for weak chromatic functions. We find expressions, valid in that group, for a gain graph in terms of minors without neutral…
In this article we prove that the ideal-Shi arrangements are free central arrangements of hyperplanes satisfying the dual-partition formula. Then it immediately follows that there exists a saturated free filtration of the cone of any affine Weyl arrangement such that each filter is a free subarrangement satisfying the dual-partition formula. This generalizes the main result in \cite{ABCHT} which affirmatively settled a conjecture by Sommers and Tymoczko \cite{SomTym}.
Let $K^{(r)}_{s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_r}$ be the complete $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph and $ex(n,K^{(r)}_{s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_r})$ be the maximum number of edges in any $n$-vertex $K^{(r)}_{s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_r}$-free $r$-uniform hypergraph. It is well-known in the graph case that $ex(n,K_{s,t})=Θ(n^{2-1/s})$ when $t$ is sufficiently larger than $s$. In this note, we generalize the above to hypergraphs by showing that if $s_r$ is sufficiently larger than $s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_{r-1}$ then $$ex(n, K^{(r)}_{s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_r})=Θ\left(n^{r-\frac{1}{s_1s_2\cdots s_{r-1}}}\right).$$ This follows from a more …
It is an open question to give a combinatorial interpretation of the Falk invariant of a hyperplane arrangement, i.e. the third rank of successive quotients in the lower central series of the fundamental group of the arrangement. In this article, we give a combinatorial formula for this invariant in the case of hyperplane arrangements that are complete lift representation of certain gain graphs. As a corollary, we compute the Falk invariant for the cone of the braid, Shi, Linial and semiorder arrangements.
In the theory of hyperplane arrangements, the most important and difficult problem is the combinatorial dependency of several properties. In this atricle, we prove that Terao's celebrated addition-deletion theorem for free arrangements is combinatorial, i.e., whether you can apply it depends only on the intersection lattice of arrangements. The proof is based on a classical technique. Since some parts are already completed recently, we prove the rest part, i.e., the combinatoriality of the addition theorem. As a corollary, we can define a new class of free arrangements called the additionally …
The number of flats of a hyperplane arrangement is considered as a generalization of the Bell number and the Stirling number of the second kind. Robert Gill gave the exponential generating function of the number of flats of the extended Catalan arrangements, using species. In this article, we introduce the species of flats of the extended Catalan and Shi arrangements and they are given by iterated substitution of species of sets and lists. Moreover, we enumerate the flats of these arrangements in terms of infinite matrices.
We characterise the Pak-Stanley labels of the regions of a family of hyperplane arrangements that interpolate between the Shi arrangement and the Ish arrangement.
We establish counting formulas and bijections for deformations of the braid arrangement. Precisely, we consider real hyperplane arrangements such that all the hyperplanes are of the form $x\_i-x\_j=s$ for some integer $s$. Classical examples include the braid, Catalan, Shi, semiorder and Linial arrangements, as well as graphical arrangements. We express the number of regions of any such arrangement as a signed count of decorated plane trees. The characteristic and coboundary polynomials of these arrangements also have simple expressions in terms of these trees. We then focus on certain "well-b…
An arrangement of hyperplanes is a finite collection of hyperplanes in a real Euclidean space. To such a collection one associates the characteristic polynomial that encodes the combinatorics of intersections of the hyperplanes. Finding the characteristic polynomial of the Shi threshold and the Catalan threshold arrangements was an open problem in Stanley's list of problems in [1]. Seunghyun Seo solved both the problems by clever arguments using the finite field method in [3,4]. However, in his paper, he left open the problem of computing the characteristic polynomial of a broader class of thr…
In 1983, Lusztig defined a map $σ$ from affine permutations of $n$ to partitions of $n$. He conjectured that for any partition $λ$ of $n$, $σ^{-1}(λ)$ is a two-sided cell. Shi, in 1986, proved part of this conjecture. As a byproduct, he introduced the Shi arrangement of hyperplanes and found a few of its remarkable properties. The Shi arrangement has since become a central object in algebraic combinatorics. This article is intended to be a fairly gentle introduction to the Shi arrangement, intended for readers with a modest background in combinatorics, algebra, and Euclidean geometry.
The original Pak-Stanley labeling was defined by Pak and Stanley as a bijective map from the set of regions of an extended Shi arrangement to the set of parking functions. This map was later generalized to other arrangements associated with graphs and directed multigraphs. In these more general cases the map is no longer bijective. However, it was shown Hopkins and Perkinson and then the first author that it is surjective to the set of the $G$-parking functions, where $G$ is the multigraph associated with the arrangement. This leads to a natural question: when is the generalized Pak-Stanley ma…
This paper is about two arrangements of hyperplanes. The first --- the Shi arrangement --- was introduced by Jian-Yi Shi to describe the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in the affine Weyl group of type $A$. The second --- the Ish arrangement --- was recently defined by the first author who used the two arrangements together to give a new interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers of Garsia and Haiman. In the present paper we will define a mysterious "combinatorial symmetry" between the two arrangements and show that this symmetry preserves a great deal of information. For example, the Shi and Ish arran…
It is known that the Pak-Stanley labeling of the Shi hyperplane arrangement provides a bijection between the regions of the arrangement and parking functions. For any graph G, we define the G-semiorder arrangement and show that the Pak-Stanley labeling of its regions produces all G-parking functions.
For two $s$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ and $F$, the Turán number $ex_s(H,F)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free subgraph of $H$. Let $s, r, k, n_1, \ldots, n_r$ be integers satisfying $2\leq s\leq r$ and $n_1\leq n_2\leq \cdots\leq n_r$. De Silva, Heysse and Young determined $ex_2(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r}, kK_2)$ and De Silva, Heysse, Kapilow, Schenfisch and Young determined $ex_2(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r},kK_r)$. In this paper, as a generalization of these results, we consider three Turán-type problems for $k$ disjoint cliques in $r$-partite $s$-uniform hypergraphs. First, we consider a multi-…
The {\em overlap number} of a finite $(d+1)$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is defined as the largest constant $c(H)\in (0,1]$ such that no matter how we map the vertices of $H$ into $\R^d$, there is a point covered by at least a $c(H)$-fraction of the simplices induced by the images of its hyperedges. In~\cite{Gro2}, motivated by the search for an analogue of the notion of graph expansion for higher dimensional simplicial complexes, it was asked whether or not there exists a sequence $\{H_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$ of arbitrarily large $(d+1)$-uniform hypergraphs with bounded degree, for which $\inf_{n\ge 1} …
In 1986, Shi derived the famous formula $(n+1)^{n-1}$ for the number of regions of the Shi arrangement, a hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$. There are at least two different bijective explanations of this formula, one by Pak and Stanley, another by Athanasiadis and Linusson. In 1996, Athanasiadis used the finite field method to derive a formula for the number of $k$-dimensional faces of the Shi arrangement for any $k$. Until now, the formula of Athanasiadis did not have a bijective explanation. In this paper, we extend a bijection for regions defined by Bernardi to obtain a bijection be…
The \emph{Shi arrangement} is the set of all hyperplanes in $\mathbb R^n$ of the form $x_j - x_k = 0$ or $1$ for $1 \le j < k \le n$. Shi observed in 1986 that the number of regions (i.e., connected components of the complement) of this arrangement is $(n+1)^{n-1}$. An unrelated combinatorial concept is that of a \emph{parking function}, i.e., a sequence $(x_1, x_2, ..., x_n)$ of positive integers that, when rearranged from smallest to largest, satisfies $x_k \le k$. (There is an illustrative reason for the term \emph{parking function}.) It turns out that the number of parking functions of len…
The generalized Turán number $ex(n,K_s,H)$ is the maximum number of complete graph $K_s$ in an $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Let $F_k$ be the friendship graph consisting of $k$ triangles. Erdős and Sós (1976) determined the value of $ex(n,K_3,F_2)$. Alon and Shikhelman (2016) proved that $ex(n,K_3, F_k)\le (9k-15)(k+1)n.$ In this paper, by using a method developed by Chung and Frankl in hypergraph theory, we determine the exact value of $ex(n,K_3,F_k)$ and the extremal graph for any $F_k$ when $n\ge 4k^3$.
