We study analogues of the notions from Lie theory of Levi subgroup and Levi decomposition, in the case of groups G definable in an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. With suitable definitions, we prove that G has a unique maximal ind-definable semisimple subgroup S, up to conjugacy, and that G = RS where R is the solvable radical of G. We also prove that any semisimple subalgebra of the Lie algebra of G corresponds to a unique ind-definable semisimple subgroup of G.
In his unpublished preprint "Definable Valuations" Koenigsmann shows that every field that admits a t-henselian topology is either real closed or separably closed or admits a definable valuation inducing the t-henselian topology. To show this Koenigsmann investigates valuation rings induced by certain (definable) subgroups of the field. The aim of this paper, based on the authors PhD thesis, is to look at the methods used in the preprint in greater detail and correct a mistake in the original paper based on a paper of Jahnke and Koenigsmann.
The aim of this paper is to describe all definable subgroups of SL2(K), for K a p-adically closed field. We begin by giving some "frame subgroups" which contain all nilpotent or solvable subgroups of SL2(K). A complete description is givien for K a p-adically closed field, some results are generalizable to K a field elementarily equivalent to a finite extension of Qp and an almost complete description is given for Q an p . We give also some indications about genericity and generosity in SL2(K).
We prove the definability, and actually the finiteness of the commutator width, of many commutator subgroups in groups definable in o-minimal structures. It applies in particular to derived series and to lower central series of solvable groups. Along the way, we prove some generalities on groups with the descending chain condition on definable subgroups and/or with a definable and additive dimension.
We study algebraic closure and its relation with definable closure in free groups and more generally in torsion-free hyperbolic groups. Given a torsion-free hyperbolic group G and a nonabelian subgroup A of G, we describe G as a constructible group from the algebraic closure of A along cyclic subgroups. In particular, it follows that the algebraic closure of A is finitely generated, quasiconvex and hyperbolic. Suppose that G is free. Then the definable closure of A is a free factor of the algebraic closure of A and the rank of these groups is bounded by that of G. We prove that the algebraic c…
An $\mathfrak{M}_C$ group is a group in which all chains of centralizers have finite length. In this article, we show that every nilpotent subgroup of an $\mathfrak{M}_C$ group is contained in a definable subgroup which is nilpotent of the same nilpotence class. Definitions are uniform when the lengths of chains are bounded.
We show that the derived subgroup of a linear definable group in an o-minimal structure is also definable, extending the semialgebraic case proved by A. Pillay. We also show the definability of the derived subgroup in case that the group is simply-connected.
The Fitting subgroup of a type-definable group in a simple theory is relatively definable and nilpotent. Moreover, the Fitting subgroup of a supersimple hyperdefinable group has a normal hyperdefinable nilpotent subgroup of bounded index, and is itself of bounded index in a hyperdefinable subgroup.
There are strong analogies between groups definable in o-minimal structures and real Lie groups. Nevertheless, unlike the real case, not every definable group has maximal definably compact subgroups. We study definable groups G which are not definably compact showing that they have a unique maximal normal definable torsion-free subgroup N; the quotient G/N always has maximal definably compact subgroups, and for every such a K there is a maximal definable torsion-free subgroup H such that G/N can be decomposed as G/N = KH, and the intersection between K and H is trivial. Thus G is definably hom…
We study locally definable abelian groups $\CU$ in various settings and examine conditions under which the quotient of $\CU$ by a discrete subgroup might be definable. This turns out to be related to the existence of the type-definable subgroup $\CU^{00}$ and to the divisibility of $\CU$.
We prove a structure theorem for periodic locally soluble groups satisfying a chain condition on intersections of relatively uniformly definable subgroups using results from the theory of stable groups. The result in particular shows that these groups are soluble, thus giving a model-theoretic and much simpler proof of a special case of a theorem of Bryant and Hartley on the solubility of periodic locally soluble groups satisfying the minimal condition on centralizers.
We work in the category of locally definable groups in an o-minimal expansion of a field. Eleftheriou and Peterzil conjectured that every definably generated abelian connected group G in this category is a cover of a definable group. We prove that this is the case under a natural convexity assumption inspired by the same authors, which in fact gives a necessary and sufficient condition. The proof is based on the study of the zero-dimensional compatible subgroups of G. Given a locally definable connected group G (not necessarily definably generated), we prove that the n-torsion subgroup of G is…
If F is a type-definable family of commensurable subsets, subgroups or sub-vector spaces in a metric structure, then there is an invariant subset, subgroup or sub-vector space commensurable with F. This in particular applies to type-definable or hyper-definable objects in a classical first-order structure.
For G a group definable in an NIP theory we prove that there is a smallest type-definable subgroup H of G such that the quotient G/H is stable. This generalizes the existence of G^00, the smallest type-definable subgroup of G of bounded index.
Given a definably amenable approximate subgroup $A$ of a (local) group in some first-order structure, there is a type-definable subgroup $H$ normalised by $A$ and contained in $A^4$ such that every definable superset of $H$ has positive measure.
We prove the following instance of a conjecture stated in arXiv:1103.4770. Let $G$ be an abelian semialgebraic group over a real closed field $R$ and let $X$ be a semialgebraic subset of $G$. Then the group generated by $X$ contains a generic set and, if connected, it is divisible. More generally, the same result holds when $X$ is definable in any o-minimal expansion of $R$ which is elementarily equivalent to $\mathbb R_{an,exp}$. We observe that the above statement is equivalent to saying: there exists an $m$ such that $Σ_{i=1}^m(X-X)$ is an approximate subgroup of $G$.
We study the connected components G^00, G^000 and their quotients for a group G definable in a saturated o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. We show that G^00/G^000 is naturally the quotient of a connected compact commutative Lie group by a dense finitely generated subgroup. We also highlight the role of universal covers of semisimple Lie groups.
We study the algebraic implications of the non-independence property (NIP) and variants thereof (dp-minimality) on infinite fields, motivated by the conjecture that all such fields which are neither real closed nor separably closed admit a definable henselian valuation. Our results mainly focus on Hahn fields and build up on Will Johnson's preprint "dp-minimal fields", arXiv: 1507.02745v1, July 2015.
Let $T$ be a (first order complete) dependent theory, ${\mathfrak{C}}$ a $\barκ$-saturated model of $T$ and $G$ a definable subgroup which is abelian. Among subgroups of bounded index which are the union of $<\barκ$ type definable subsets there is a minimal one, i.e. their intersection has bounded index. In fact, the bound is $\leq 2^{|T|}$. We then deal with 2-dependent theories, a wider class of first order theories.
Peterzil and Steinhorn proved that if a group $G$ definable in an $o$-minimal structure is not definably compact, then $G$ contains a definable torsion-free subgroup of dimension one. We prove here a $p$-adic analogue of the Peterzil-Steinhorn theorem, in the special case of abelian groups. Let $G$ be an abelian group definable in a $p$-adically closed field $M$. If $G$ is not definably compact then there is a definable subgroup $H$ of dimension one which is not definably compact. In a future paper we will generalize this to non-abelian $G$.
A group is small if it has countably many complete $n$-types over the empty set for each natural number n. More generally, a group $G$ is weakly small if it has countably many complete 1-types over every finite subset of G. We show here that in a weakly small group, subgroups which are definable with parameters lying in a finitely generated algebraic closure satisfy the descending chain conditions for their traces in any finitely generated algebraic closure. An infinite weakly small group has an infinite abelian subgroup, which may not be definable. A small nilpotent group is the central produ…
We study amenability of definable and topological groups. Among our main technical tools is an elaboration on and strengthening of the Massicot-Wagner version of the stabilizer theorem, and some results around measures. As an application we show that if $G$ is an amenable topological group, then the Bohr compactification of $G$ coincides with a certain "weak Bohr compactification" introduced in [24]. Formally, $G^{00}_{topo} = G^{000}_{topo}$. We also prove wide generalizations of this result, implying in particular its extension to a "definable-topological" context, confirming the main conjec…
We state conditions for which a definable local homomorphism between two locally definable groups $\mathcal{G}$, $\mathcal{G^{\prime}}$ can be uniquely extended when $\mathcal{G}$ is simply connected (Theorem 2.1). As an application of this result we obtain an easy proof of [3, Thm. 9.1] (see Corollary 2.2). We also prove that Theorem 10.2 in [3] also holds for any definably connected definably compact semialgebraic group $G$ not necessarily abelian over a sufficiently saturated real closed field $R$; namely, that the o-minimal universal covering group $\widetilde{G}$ of $G$ is an open locally…
For $G$ an algebraic group definable over a model of $\operatorname{ACVF}$, or more generally a definable subgroup of an algebraic group, we study the stable completion $\widehat{G}$ of $G$, as introduced by Loeser and the second author. For $G$ connected and stably dominated, assuming $G$ commutative or that the valued field is of equicharacteristic 0, we construct a pro-definable $G$-equivariant strong deformation retraction of $\widehat{G}$ onto the generic type of $G$. For $G=S$ a semiabelian variety, we construct a pro-definable $S$-equivariant strong deformation retraction of $\widehat{S…
Let G be a group definable in an o-minimal structure M. We prove that the union of the Cartan subgroups of G is a dense subset of G. When M is an expansion of a real closed field we give a characterization of Cartan subgroups of G via their Lie algebras which allow us to prove firstly, that every Cartan subalgebra of the Lie algebra of G is the Lie algebra of a definable subgroup - a Cartan subgroup of G -, and secondly, that the set of regular points of G - a dense subset of G - is formed by points which belong to a unique Cartan subgroup of G.
We show that an infinite group $G$ definable in a $1$-h-minimal field admits a strictly $K$-differentiable structure with respect to which $G$ is a (weak) Lie group, and show that definable local subgroups sharing the same Lie algebra have the same germ at the identity. We conclude that infinite fields definable in $K$ are definably isomorphic to finite extensions of $K$ and that $1$-dimensional groups definable in $K$ are finite-by-abelian-by-finite. Along the way we develop the basic theory of definable weak $K$-manifolds and definable morphisms between them.
This paper provides a first example of a model theoretically well behaved structure consisting of a proper o-minimal expansion of the real field and a dense multiplicative subgroup of finite rank. Under certain Schanuel conditions, a quantifier elimination result will be shown for the real field with an irrational power function and a dense multiplicative subgroup of finite rank whose elements are algebraic over the field generated by the irrational power. Moreover, every open set definable in this structure is already definable in the reduct given by just the real field and the irrational pow…
We classify the groups definable in the coloured fields obtained by Hrushovski amalgamation. A group definable in the bad green field is isogenous to the quotient of a subgroup of an algebraic group by a Cartesian power of the group of green elements. A definable subgroup of an algebraic group in the green or red field is an extension of the coloured points of a multiplicative or additive algebraic group by an algebraic group. In particular, a simple group in a coloured field is algebraic.

We solve two problems from the paper "On maximal stable quotients of definable groups in NIP theories" by M. Haskel and A. Pillay, which concern maximal stable quotients of groups type-definable in NIP theories. The first result says that if $G$ is a type-definable group in a distal theory, then $G^{st}=G^{00}$ (where $G^{st}$ is the smallest type-definable subgroup with $G/G^{st}$ stable, and $G^{00}$ is the smallest type-definable subgroup of bounded index). In order to get it, we prove that distality is preserved under passing from $T$ to the hyperimaginary expansion $T^{heq}$. The second r…
Consider the algebraic dynamics on a torus T=G_m^n given by a matrix M in GL_n(Z). Assume that the characteristic polynomial of M is prime to all polynomials X^m-1. We show that any finite equivariant map from another algebraic dynamics onto (T,M) arises from a finite isogeny T \to T. A similar and more general statement is shown for Abelian and semi-abelian varieties. In model-theoretic terms, our result says: Working in an existentially closed difference field, we consider a definable subgroup B of a semi-abelian variety A; assume B does not have a subgroup isogenous to A'(F) for some twiste…
The aim of this paper is to develop the theory of groups definable in the $p$-adic field ${\mathbb Q}_p$, with ``definable $f$-generics" in the sense of an ambient saturated elementary extension of ${\mathbb Q}_p$. We call such groups definable $f$-generic groups. So, by a ``definable f-generic'' or dfg group we mean a definable group in a saturated model with a global f-generic type which is definable over a small model. In the present context the group is definable over ${\mathbb Q}_p$, and the small model will be ${\mathbb Q}_p$ itself. The notion of a dfg group is dual, or rather opposite …
We prove that the theory of the $p$-adics ${\mathbb Q}_p$ admits elimination of imaginaries provided we add a sort for ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb Q}_p)/{\rm GL}_n({\mathbb Z}_p)$ for each $n$. We also prove that the elimination of imaginaries is uniform in $p$. Using $p$-adic and motivic integration, we deduce the uniform rationality of certain formal zeta functions arising from definable equivalence relations. This also yields analogous results for definable equivalence relations over local fields of positive characteristic. The appendix contains an alternative proof, using cell decomposition, of t…

Let $\mathcal M$ be a weakly o-minimal non-valuational structure, and $\mathcal N$ its canonical o-minimal extension (by Wencel). We prove that every group $G$ definable in $\mathcal M$ is a subgroup of a group $K$ definable in $\mathcal N$, which is canonical in the sense that it is the smallest such group. As an application, we obtain that $G^{00}= G\cap K^{00}$, and establish Pillay's Conjecture in this setting: $G/G^{00}$, equipped with the logic topology, is a compact Lie group, and if $G$ has finitely satisfiable generics, then $\dim_{Lie}(G/G^{00})= \dim(G)$.
We continue the analysis of definably compact groups definable in a real closed field $\mathcal{R}$. In [3], we proved that for every definably compact definably connected semialgebraic group $G$ over $\mathcal{R}$ there are a connected $R$-algebraic group $H$, a definable injective map $ϕ$ from a generic definable neighborhood of the identity of $G$ into the group $H\left(R\right)$ of $R$-points of $H$ such that $ϕ$ acts as a group homomorphism inside its domain. The above result and our study of locally definable covering homomorphisms for locally definable groups combine to prove that if su…
Recall that a group $G$ has finitely satisfiable generics ($fsg$) or definable $f$-generics ($dfg$) if there is a global type $p$ on $G$ and a small model $M_0$ such that every left translate of $p$ is finitely satisfiable in $M_0$ or definable over $M_0$, respectively. We show that any abelian group definable in a $p$-adically closed field is an extension of a definably compact $fsg$ definable group by a $dfg$ definable group. We discuss an approach which might prove a similar statement for interpretable abelian groups. In the case where $G$ is an abelian group definable in the standard model…
This work can be thought as a contribution to the model theory of group extensions. We study the groups G which are interpretable in the disjoint union of two structures (seen as a two-sorted structure). We show that if one of the two structures is superstable of finite Lascar rank and the Lascar rank is definable, then G is an extension of a group internal to the (possibly) unstable sort by a definable subgroup internal to the stable sort. In the final part of the paper we show that if the unstable sort is an o-minimal expansion of the reals, then G has a natural Lie structure and the extensi…
An argument of A.Borel shows that every compact connected Lie group is homeomorphic to the Cartesian product of its derived subgroup and a torus. We prove a parallel result for definably compact definably connected groups definable in an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. As opposed to the Lie case, however, we provide an example showing that the derived subgroup may not have a definable semidirect complement.
We study the geometry of germs of definable (semialgebraic or subanalytic) sets over a $p$-adic field from the metric, differential and measure geometric point of view. We prove that the local density of such sets at each of their points does exist. We then introduce the notion of distinguished tangent cone with respect to some open subgroup with finite index in the multiplicative group of our field and show, as it is the case in the real setting, that, up to some multiplicities, the local density may be computed on this distinguished tangent cone.We also prove that these distinguished tangent…
It is known that a definably compact group G is an extension of a compact Lie group L by a divisible torsion-free normal subgroup. We show that the o-minimal higher homotopy groups of G are isomorphic to the corresponding higher homotopy groups of L. As a consequence, we obtain that all abelian definably compact groups of a given dimension are definably homotopy equivalent, and that their universal cover are contractible.

Given two structures $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{N}$ on the same domain, we say that $\mathcal{N}$ is a reduct of $\mathcal{M}$ if all $\emptyset$-definable relations of $\mathcal{N}$ are $\emptyset$-definable in $\mathcal{M}$. In this article the reducts of the Henson digraphs are classified. Henson digraphs are homogeneous countable digraphs that omit some set of finite tournaments. As the Henson digraphs are $\aleph_0$-categorical, determining their reducts is equivalent to determining all closed supergroups $G<$ Sym$(\mathbb{N})$ of their automorphism groups. A consequence of the classific…
We study definably compact definably connected groups definable in a sufficiently saturated real closed field $R$. We introduce the notion of group-generic point for $\bigvee$-definable groups and show the existence of group-generic points for definably compact groups definable in a sufficiently saturated o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. We use this notion along with some properties of generic sets to prove that for every definably compact definably connected group $G$ definable in $R$ there are a connected $R$-algebraic group $H$, a definable injective map $ϕ$ from a generic defina…
We establish a surprising correspondence between groups definable in o-minimal structures and linear algebraic groups, in the nilpotent case. It turns out that in the o-minimal context, like for finite groups, nilpotency is equivalent to the normalizer property or to uniqueness of Sylow subgroups. As a consequence, we show algebraic decompositions of o-minimal nilpotent groups, and we prove that a nilpotent Lie group is definable in an o-minimal expansion of the reals if and only if it is a linear algebraic group.
