Let $\mathcal M$ be a weakly o-minimal non-valuational structure, and $\mathcal N$ its canonical o-minimal extension (by Wencel). We prove that every group $G$ definable in $\mathcal M$ is a subgroup of a group $K$ definable in $\mathcal N$, which is canonical in the sense that it is the smallest such group. As an application, we obtain that $G^{00}= G\cap K^{00}$, and establish Pillay's Conjecture in this setting: $G/G^{00}$, equipped with the logic topology, is a compact Lie group, and if $G$ has finitely satisfiable generics, then $\dim_{Lie}(G/G^{00})= \dim(G)$.
We prove that all known examples of weakly o-minimal non-valuational structures have no definable Skolem functions. We show, however, that such structures eliminate imaginaries up to (definable families of) definable cuts. Along the way we give some new examples of weakly o-minimal non-valuational structures.
Given a weakly o-minimal structure $\mathcal M$ and its o-minimal completion $\bar {\mathcal M}$, we first associate to $\bar {\mathcal M}$ a canonical language and then prove that $Th(\mathcal M)$ determines $Th(\bar {\mathcal M})$. We then investigate the theory of the pair $\mathcal M^P=(\bar {\mathcal M};M)$ in the spirit of the theory of dense pairs of o-minimal structures, and prove, among other results, that it is near model complete, and every $\mathcal M^P$-definable open subset of $\bar M^n$ is already definable in $\bar {\mathcal M}$. We give an example of a weakly o-minimal structu…
Given an o-minimal structure ${\mathcal M}$ with a group operation, we show that for a properly convex subset $U$, the theory of the expanded structure ${\mathcal M}'=({\mathcal M},U)$ has definable Skolem functions precisely when ${\mathcal M}'$ is valuational. As a corollary, we get an elementary proof that the theory of any such ${\mathcal M}'$ does not satisfy definable choice.
We prove that the class of all ordinals Ord is not weakly compact with respect to definable classes. Specifically, in any model of ZFC, the definable tree property fails for Ord, in that there is a definable Ord tree with no definable cofinal branch; the definable partition property fails, in that there is a definable 2-coloring of pairs from a certain definable proper class, with no definable homogeneous proper class; and the definable compactness property fails for $\mathcal{L}_{\infty,ω}$, in that there is a definable theory in this logic all of whose set-sized subtheories are satisfiable, …
A group is small if it has countably many complete $n$-types over the empty set for each natural number n. More generally, a group $G$ is weakly small if it has countably many complete 1-types over every finite subset of G. We show here that in a weakly small group, subgroups which are definable with parameters lying in a finitely generated algebraic closure satisfy the descending chain conditions for their traces in any finitely generated algebraic closure. An infinite weakly small group has an infinite abelian subgroup, which may not be definable. A small nilpotent group is the central produ…
We study the definable topological dynamics $(G(M), S_G(M))$ of a definable group acting on its type space, where $M$ is either an $o$-minimal structure or a $p$-adically closed field, and $G$ a definable amenable group. We focus on the problem raised by Neweslki of whether weakly generic types coincide with almost periodic types, showing that the answer is positive when $G$ has boundedly many global weakly generic types. We also give two "minimal counterexamples" where $G$ has unboundedly many global weakly generic types, extending the main results of "On minimal flows, definably amenable gro…

We study the definable topological dynamics $(G,S_G(M))$ of a definable group acting on its type space, where $M$ is a structure and $G$ is a group definable in $M$. In \cite{Newelski-I}, Newelski raised a question of whether weakly generic types coincide with almost periodic types in definable topological dynamics. In \cite{YZ-Sta}, we introduced the notion of stationarity, showing the answer is positive when $G$ is a stationary definably amenable group definable over the field of $p$-adic numbers or an $o$-minimal expansion of real closed field. In this paper, we continue with the work of \c…
We develop tame topology over dp-minimal structures equipped with definable uniformities satisfying certain assumptions. Our assumptions are enough to ensure that definable sets are tame: there is a good notion of dimension on definable sets, definable functions are almost everywhere continuous, and definable sets are finite unions of graphs of definable continuous "multi-valued functions". This generalizes known statements about weakly o-minimal, C-minimal and P-minimal theories.
We study the notion of dp-minimality, beginning by providing several essential facts, establishing several equivalent definitions, and comparing dp-minimality to other minimality notions. The rest of the paper is dedicated to examples. We establish via a simple proof that any weakly o-minimal theory is dp-minimal and then give an example of a weakly o-minimal group not obtained by adding traces of externally definable sets. Next we give an example of a divisible ordered Abelian group which is dp-minimal and not weakly o-minimal. Finally we establish that the field of p-adic numbers is dp-minim…
We deal with first-order definability in the embeddability ordering $( \mathcal{D}; \leq)$ of finite directed graphs. A directed graph $G\in \mathcal{D}$ is said to be embeddable into $G' \in \mathcal{D}$ if there exists an injective graph homomorphism $φ\colon G \to G'$. We describe the first-order definable relations of $( \mathcal{D}; \leq)$ using the first-order language of an enriched small category of digraphs. The description yields the main result of one of the author's papers as a corollary and a lot more. For example, the set of weakly connected digraphs turns out to be first-order d…
We study the flow (G(Qp); SG(Qp)) of trigonalizable algebraic group acting on its type space, focusing on the problem raised in [17] of whether weakly generic types coincide with almost periodic types if the group has global definable f-generic types, equivalently whether the union of minimal subflows of a suitable type space is closed. We will give a description of of f-generic types of trigonalizable algebraic groups, and prove that every f-generic type is almost periodic.
In this paper we study elimination of imaginaries in some classes of henselian valued fields of equicharacteristic zero and residue field algebraically closed. The results are sensitive to the complexity of the value group. We focus first in the case where the ordered abelian group has finite spines, and then prove a better result for the dp-minimal case. An ordered abelian with finite spines weakly eliminates imaginaries once we add sorts for the quotient groups $Γ/ Δ$ for each definable convex subgroup $Δ$, and sorts for the quotient groups $Γ/ Δ+ lΓ$ where $Δ$ is a definable convex subgroup…
In this paper a systematic study of the category GTS of generalized topological spaces (in the sense of H. Delfs and M. Knebusch) and their strictly continuous mappings begins. Some completeness and cocompleteness results are achieved. Generalized topological spaces help to reconstruct the important elements of the theory of locally definable and weakly definable spaces in the wide context of weakly topological structures.
For a cardinal kappa and a model M of cardinality kappa let No(M) denote the number of non-isomorphic models of cardinality kappa which are L_{infty,kappa}--equivalent to M. In [Sh:133] Shelah established that when kappa is a weakly compact cardinal and mu<=kappa is a nonzero cardinal, there exists a model M of cardinality kappa with No(M)=mu. We prove here that if kappa is a weakly compact cardinal, the question of the possible values of No(M) for models M of cardinality kappa is equivalent to the question of the possible numbers of equivalence classes of equivalence relations which are Sigma…
This article explains and extends semialgebraic homotopy theory (developed by H. Delfs and M. Knebusch) to o-minimal homotopy theory (over a field). The homotopy category of definable CW-complexes is equivalent to the homotopy category of topological CW-complexes (with continuous mappings). If the theory of the o-minimal expansion of a field is bounded, then these categories are equivalent to the homotopy category of weakly definable spaces. Similar facts hold for decreasing systems of spaces. As a result, generalized homology and cohomology theories on pointed weak polytopes uniquely correspo…
We study amenability of definable and topological groups. Among our main technical tools is an elaboration on and strengthening of the Massicot-Wagner version of the stabilizer theorem, and some results around measures. As an application we show that if $G$ is an amenable topological group, then the Bohr compactification of $G$ coincides with a certain "weak Bohr compactification" introduced in [24]. Formally, $G^{00}_{topo} = G^{000}_{topo}$. We also prove wide generalizations of this result, implying in particular its extension to a "definable-topological" context, confirming the main conjec…
