Motivated by Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence we present a unified approach to the regularity problems for the 3D Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. We introduce a dissipation wavenumber $Λ(t)$ that separates low modes where the Euler dynamics is predominant from the high modes where the viscous forces take over. Then using an indifferent to the viscosity technique we obtain a new regularity criterion which is weaker than every Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin condition in the viscous case, and reduces to the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion in the inviscid case. In the viscous case we also we prove that Leray-Hopf solutions are regular provided $Λ\in L^{5/2}$, which improves our previous $Λ\in L^\infty$ condition. We also show that $Λ\in L^1$ for all Leray-Hopf solutions. Finally, we prove that Leray-Hopf solutions are regular when the time-averaged spatial intermittency is small, i.e., close to Kolmogorov's regime.
Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence predicts that only wavenumbers below some critical value, called Kolmogorov's dissipation number, are essential to describe the evolution of a three-dimensional fluid flow. A determining wavenumber, first introduced by Foias and Prodi for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, is a mathematical analog of Kolmogorov's number. The purpose of this paper is to prove the existence of a time-dependent determining wavenumber for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations whose time average is bounded by Kolmogorov's dissipation wavenumber for all solutions on the global attractor whose…
We prove that statistically stationary martingale solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{T}^3$ subjected to white-in-time (colored-in-space) forcing satisfy the Kolmogorov 4/5 law (in an averaged sense and over a suitable inertial range) using only the assumption that the kinetic energy is $o(ν^{-1})$ as $ν\rightarrow 0$ (where $ν$ is the inverse Reynolds number). This plays the role of a weak anomalous dissipation. No energy balance or additional regularity is assumed (aside from that satisfied by all martingale solutions from the energy inequality). If the force is statistic…
In this paper, we consider the inviscid limit of inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations under the weak Kolmogorov hypothesis in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In particular, we first deduce the Kolmogorov-type hypothesis in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which yields the uniform bounds of $α^{th}$-order fractional derivatives of $\sqrt{ρ^μ}{\bf u}^μ$ in $L^2_x$ for some $α>0$, independent of the viscosity. The uniform bounds can provide strong convergence of $\sqrt{ρ^μ}\bf u^μ$ in $L^2$ space. This shows that the inviscid limit is a weak solution to the corresponding Euler equations.
We derive the 1D isentropic Euler and Navier-Stokes equations describing the motion of a gas through a nozzle of variable cross section as the asymptotic limit of the 3D isentropic Navier-Stokes system in a cylinder, the diameter of which tends to zero. Our method is based on the relative energy inequality satisfied by any weak solution of the 3D Navier-Stokes system and a variant of Korn-Poincare's inequality on thin channels that may be of independent interest.
We consider here the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ with a stationary, divergence-free external force and with an additional damping term that depends on two parameters. We first study the well-posedness of weak solutions for these equations and then, for a particular set of the damping parameters, we will obtain an upper and lower control for the energy dissipation rate $\varepsilon$ according to the Kolmogorov K41 theory. However, although the behavior of weak solutions corresponds to the K41 theory, we will show that in some specific cases the damping term introduced in the Nav…
We prove new \emph{a priori} estimates for the 3D Euler, the 3D Navier-Stokes and the 2D quasi-geostrophic equations by the method of similarity transforms.
We show that weak solutions of degenerate Navier-Stokes equations converge to the strong solutions of the pressureless Euler system with linear drag term, Newtonian repulsion and quadratic confinement. The proof is based on the relative entropy method using the artificial velocity formulation for the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes system.
We are concerned with the inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations to the Euler equations for compressible fluids in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Motivated by the Kolmogorov hypothesis (1941) for incompressible flow, we introduce a Kolmogorov-type hypothesis for barotropic flows, in which the density and the sonic speed normally vary significantly. We then observe that the compressible Kolmogorov-type hypothesis implies the uniform boundedness of some fractional derivatives of the weighted velocity and sonic speed in the space variables in $L^2$, which is independent of the viscosity coefficient $μ>0$…
This is a rather comprehensive study on the dynamics of Navier-Stokes and Euler equations via a combination of analysis and numerics. We focus upon two main aspects: (a). zero viscosity limit of the spectra of linear Navier-Stokes operator, (b). heteroclinics conjecture for Euler equation, its numerical verification, Melnikov integral, and simulation and control of chaos. Besides Navier-Stokes and Euler equations, we also study two models of them.
We consider the Euler-Voigt equations and the Navier-Stokes-Voigt equations, which are obtained by an inviscid alpha-regularization from the corresponding equations. The main result we show is the structural stability of the system in term of the variations of both viscosity of regularization parameters.
This work presents an approach to the Navier-Stokes equations that is phrased in unbiased Eulerian coordinates, yet describes objects that have Lagrangian significance: particle paths, their dispersion and diffusion. The commutator between Lagrangian and Eulerian derivatives plays an important role in the Navier-Stokes equations: it contributes a singular perturbation to the Euler equations, in addition to the Laplacian. Bounds for the Lagrangian displacements, their first and second derivatives are obtained without assumptions. Some of these rigorous bounds can be interpreted in terms of the …
We utilize undetermined coefficient method and an iterative method to construct the series solutions of the 3D Cauchy problem for a class of incompressible Navier-Stokes and Euler Equations. Then we can turn the Navier-Stokes Equations (Euler Equations) into the Cauchy problem for finitely (infinitely) many ordinary differential equations. We get the finite series solution of the Navier-Stokes Equations. By using some combinatorial identities techniques, we prove that the sum of the solutions to these ordinary differential equations is an infinite series solution of the Euler Equations in some…
We establish the validity of the Euler$+$Prandtl approximation for solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the half plane with Dirichlet boundary conditions, in the vanishing viscosity limit, for initial data which are analytic only near the boundary, and Sobolev smooth away from the boundary. Our proof does not require higher order correctors, and works directly by estimating an $L^{1}$-type norm for the vorticity of the error term in the expansion Navier-Stokes$-($Euler$+$Prandtl$)$. An important ingredient in the proof is the propagation of local analyticity for the Euler equation, a re…
We prove the existence of a solution for the second order system of partial differential equations $\partial_t f = ν\cdotΔf + g\cdot\nabla f + h\cdot f + k$ by a Montel space version of Arzelà--Ascoli and bound all Schwartz semi-norms. We find that for the Euler and the Navier--Stokes equations the vorticity remains a Schwartz function as long as the classical solution exists. Our approach is not affected by viscosity. It treats the hyperbolic Euler and the parabolic Navier--Stokes equation simultaneously.
In this paper, we establish the pseudospectral bound for the linearized operator of the Navier-Stokes equations around the 3D Kolmogorov flow. Using the pseudospectral bound and the wave operator method introduced in [LWZ], we prove the sharp enhanced dissipation rate for the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. As an application, we prove that if the initial velocity satisfies $\big\| U_0-\big(k_f^{-2}\sin(k_fy),0,0\big)\big\|_{H^2}\le cν^{\frac{7}{4}}$ ($ν$ the viscosity coefficient) and $k_f\in (0,1)$, then the solution does not transition away from the Kolmogorov flow.
In this paper, we prove the linear inviscid damping and voticity depletion phenomena for the linearized Euler equations around the Kolmogorov flow. These results confirm Bouchet and Morita's predictions based on numerical analysis. By using the wave operator method introduced by Li, Wei and Zhang, we solve Beck and Wayne's conjecture on the optimal enhanced dissipation rate for the 2-D linearized Navier-Stokes equations around the bar state called Kolmogorov flow. The same dissipation rate is proved for the Navier-Stokes equations if the initial velocity is included in a basin of attraction of…
We study blow-up rates and the blow-up profiles of possible asymptotically self-similar singularities of the 3D Euler equations, where the sense of convergence and self-similarity are considered in various sense. We extend much further, in particular, the previous nonexistence results of self-similar/asymptotically self-similar singularities obtained in \cite{cha1,cha2}. Some implications the notions for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations are also deduced. Generalization of the self-similar transforms is also considered, and by appropriate choice of the transform we obtain new \textit{a priori} es…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the forced linear Euler and nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations close to Couette flow in a periodic channel. As our main result we show that for smooth time-periodic forcing linear inviscid damping persists, i.e. the velocity field (weakly) asymptotically converges. However, stability and scattering to the transport problem fail in $H^{s}, s>-1$. We further show that this behavior is consistent with the nonlinear Euler equations and that a similar result also holds for the nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations. Hence, these results provide an indication that nonli…
Non-uniqueness of Regular Solutions for Incompressible Static Euler Equations with Given Boundary Conditions and Turbulent Global Solutions of Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to the fact that the negative sign of the exponent of $R$ in (2.20) is not allowed by the second inequality of (2.2), and thus the desired vanishing in (2.20) could not be obtained by this method.
In this paper, the main objective is to generalize to the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (with density dependent viscosities satisfying the BD relation) and Euler-Korteweg systems a recent relative entropy [proposed by D. Bresch, P. Noble and J.--P. Vila, (2016)] introduced for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a linear density dependent shear viscosity and a zero bulk viscosity. As a concrete application, this helps to justify mathematically the convergence between global weak solutions of the quantum Navier-Stokes system [recently obtained simultaneously by I. Lacroix-Violet and A. Vasse…
In this paper, we study the global Cauchy problem for a two-phase fluid model consisting of the pressureless Euler equations and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations where the coupling of two equations is through the drag force. We establish the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions for that system when the initial data are sufficiently small and regular. Main difficulties arise in the absence of pressure in the Euler equations. In order to resolve it, we properly combine the large-time behavior of classical solutions and the bootstrapping argument to construct t…
We are concerned with the inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations to the Euler equations in $\R^3$. We first observe that a pathwise Kolmogorov hypothesis implies the uniform boundedness of the $α^{th}$-order fractional derivative of the velocity for some $α>0$ in the space variables in $L^2$, which is independent of the viscosity $μ>0$. Then it is shown that this key observation yields the $L^2$-equicontinuity in the time and the uniform bound in $L^q$, for some $q>2$, of the velocity independent of $μ>0$. These results lead to the strong convergence of solutions of the Navier-Stokes eq…
We consider a system of two incompressible fluids separated by a free interface. The first fluid is inviscid, governed by the Euler system, while the second fluid has positive viscosity and is governed by the Navier-Stokes system. We formulate a notion of splash-type self-intersection singularities, and show that this system cannot form such a singularity in finite time. The main obstacle in our analysis is to handle the effect of bulk vorticity induced by the Navier-Stokes flow. To the best of our knowledge this is the first result on preclusion of splash-type singularities in the presence of…
Euler-Leray data functions of first and second order are defined by first and second order derivatives of the nonlinear spatial part of the incompressible Euler equation operator in Leray projection form applied to Cauchy data. The Lipschitz continuity of these functions for a certain class of strongly regular Cauchy data is sufficient for the existence of global regular upper bounds of incompressible Navier Stokes equation solutions. Global regular upper bounds of global solution branches of the incompressible Euler equation can be obtained for a class of strongly regular Cauchy data, if the …
We study scenarios of self-similar type blow-up for the incompressible Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations. The previous notions of the discretely (backward) self-similar solution and the asymptotically self-similar solution are generalized to the locally asymptotically discretely self-similar solution. We prove that there exists no such locally asymptotically discretely self-similar blow-up for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations if the blow-up profile is a time periodic function belonging to $C^1(\Bbb R ; L^3(\Bbb R^3)\cap C^2 (\Bbb R^3))$. For the 3D Euler equations we show that the scenario o…
The paper studies the issue of stability of solutions to the Navier-Stokes and damped Euler systems in periodic boxes. We show that under action of fast oscillating-in- time external forces all two dimensional regular solutions converge to a time periodic flow. Unexpectedly, effects of stabilization can be also obtained for systems with stationary forces with large total momentum (average of the velocity). Thanks to the Galilean transformation and space boundary conditions, the stationary force changes into one with time oscillations. In the three dimensional case we show an analogical result …
In this paper we introduce (I,J) similar method for incompressible two and three dimensional Euler equations and Navier-Stokes equations, obtain a series of explicit (I,J) similar solutions to the incompressible two dimensional Euler equations, they include all of twin wave solutions, some new singularity solutions, and some global smooth solutions with finite energy. We also discover that twin wave solution and affine solution to two dimensional incompressible Euler equations are respectively plane wave and constant vector. Finally, we supply some explicit piecewise smooth solutions to incomp…
We show that for a certain family of initial data, there exist non-unique weak solutions to the 3D incompressible Euler equations satisfying the weak energy inequality, whereas the weak limit of every sequence of Leray-Hopf weak solutions for the Navier-Stokes equations, with the same initial data, and as the viscosity tends to zero, is uniquely determined and equals the shear flow solution of the Euler equations. This simple example suggests that, also in more general situations, the vanishing viscosity limit of the Navier-Stokes equations could serve as a uniqueness criterion for weak soluti…
We prove the stability of contact discontinuities without shear, a family of special discontinuous solutions for the three-dimensional full Euler systems, in the class of vanishing dissipation limits of the corresponding Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. We also show that solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system converge to the contact discontinuity when the initial datum converges to the contact discontinuity itself. This implies the uniqueness of the contact discontinuity in the class that we are considering. Our results give an answer to the open question, whether the contact discontinuity…
In this paper we give optimal lower bounds for the blow-up rate of the $\dot{H}^{s}\left(\mathbb{T}^3\right)$-norm, $\frac{1}{2}<s<\frac{5}{2}$, of a putative singular solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, and we also present an elementary proof for a lower bound on blow-up rate of the Sobolev norms of possible singular solutions to the Euler equations when $s>\frac{5}{2}$.
We prove that the Navier-Stokes, the Euler and the Stokes equations admit a Lagrangian structure using the stochastic embedding of Lagrangian systems. These equations coincide with extremals of an explicit stochastic Lagrangian functional, i.e. they are stochastic Lagrangian systems in the sense of [Cresson-Darses, J. Math. Phys. 48, 072703 (2007]
We propose a two-dimensional generalization of Constantin-Lax-Majda model [2]. Some results about singular solutions are given. This model might be the first step toward the singular solutions of the Euler equations. Along the same line (vorticity formulation), we present some further model equations. They possibly models various aspects of difficulties related with the singular solutions of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. We also make some discussions on the possible connection between turbulence and the singular solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.
We consider the compressible isentropic Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}^d\times [0,T]$ with a pressure law $p\in C^{1,γ-1}$, where $1\le γ<2$. This includes all physically relevant cases, e.g.\ the monoatomic gas. We investigate under what conditions on its regularity a weak solution conserves the energy. Previous results have crucially assumed that $p\in C^2$ in the range of the density, however, for realistic pressure laws this means that we must exclude the vacuum case. Here we improve these results by giving a number of sufficient conditions for the conservation of energy, even for solution…
We study Liouville type of theorems for the Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations on $\Bbb R^N$, $N\geq 2$. Specifically, we prove that if a weak solution $(v,p)$ satisfies $|v|^2 +|p| \in L^1 (0,T; L^1(\Bbb R^N, w_1(x)dx))$ and $\int_{\Bbb R^N} p(x,t)w_2 (x)dx \geq0$ for some weight functions $w_1(x)$ and $w_2 (x)$, then the solution is trivial, namely $v=0$ almost everywhere on $\Bbb R^N \times (0, T)$. Similar results hold for the MHD Equations on $\Bbb R^N$, $N\geq3$.
We study the behavior of solutions to the incompressible $2d$ Euler equations near two canonical shear flows with critical points, the Kolmogorov and Poiseuille flows, with consequences for the associated Navier-Stokes problems. We exhibit a large family of new, non-trivial stationary states of analytic regularity, that are arbitrarily close to the Kolmogorov flow on the square torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. This situation contrasts strongly with the setting of some monotone shear flows, such as the Couette flow: in both cases the linearized problem exhibits an "inviscid damping" mechanism that leads t…
We prove that if the local second-order structure function exponents in the inertial range remain positive uniformly in viscosity, then any spacetime $L^2$ weak limit of Leray--Hopf weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations on any bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d= 2,3$ is a weak solution of the Euler equations. This holds for both no-slip and Navier-friction conditions with viscosity-dependent slip length. The result allows for the emergence of non-unique, possibly dissipative, limiting weak solutions of the Euler equations.
We present a new hydrodynamic model consisting of the pressureless Euler equations and the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations where the coupling of two systems is through the drag force. This coupled system can be derived, in the hydrodynamic limit, from the particle-fluid equations that are frequently used to study the medical sprays, aerosols and sedimentation problems. For the proposed system, we first construct the local-in-time classical solutions in an appropriate $L^2$ Sobolev space. We also establish the \emph{a priori} large-time behavior estimate by constructing a Lyapun…
Classical vorticity solution branches of the three dimensional incompressible Euler equation are constructed where a velocity component can blow up at some point after finite time for regular data in H2. Furthermore, vorticity can blow up after finite time for data in H2, and there are classical solution branches with regular data which develop weak singularities at some point of space time after finite time. The construction of these time-local solution branches is by viscosity limits of viscosity extensions of time-reversed Euler-type equations. The short time (weak) singularities are then i…
In this work we investigate some regularization properties of the incompressible Euler equations and of the fractional Navier-Stokes equations where the dissipative term is given by $(-Δ)^α$, for a suitable power $α\in (0,\frac{1}{2})$ (the only meaningful range for this result). Assuming that the solution $u \in L^\infty _t(C^θ_x)$ for some $θ\in (0,1)$ we prove that $u \in C^θ_{t,x}$, the pressure $p\in C^{2θ-}_{t,x}$ and the kinetic energy $e \in C^{\frac{2θ}{1-θ}}_t$. This result was obtained for the Euler equations in [Is13] with completely different arguments and we believe that our proo…
Some known results regarding the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations were obtained by different authors. Existence and smoothness of the Navier-Stokes solutions in two dimensions have been known for a long time. Leray $\cite{jL34}$ showed that the Navier-Stokes equations in three space dimensions have a weak solution. Scheffer and Shnirelman obtained weak solution of the Euler equations with compact support in spacetime. Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg improved Scheffer's results, and F.-H. Lin simplified the proof of the results of J. Leray. Many problems and conjectures about the behavior of solutio…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the singular relaxation limits for the Euler-Korteweg and the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system in the high friction regime. We shall prove that the viscosity term is present only in higher orders in the proposed scaling and therefore it does not affect the limiting dynamics, and the two models share the same equilibrium equation. The analysis of the limit is carried out using the relative entropy techniques in the framework of weak, finite energy solutions of the relaxation models converging toward smooth solutions of the equilibrium. The results proved her…
We propose in this work new systems of equations which we call $p$-Euler equations and $p$-Navier-Stokes equations. $p$-Euler equations are derived as the Euler-Lagrange equations for the action represented by the Benamou-Brenier characterization of Wasserstein-$p$ distances, with incompressibility constraint. $p$-Euler equations have similar structures with the usual Euler equations but the `momentum' is the signed ($p-1$)-th power of the velocity. In the 2D case, the $p$-Euler equations have streamfunction-vorticity formulation, where the vorticity is given by the $p$-Laplacian of the stream…
The derivation of different models of non linear acoustic in thermo-ellastic media as the Kuznetsov equation, the Khokhlov-Zabolotskaya-Kuznetsov (KZK) equation and the Nonlinear Progressive wave Equation (NPE) from an isentropic Navier-Stokes/Euler system is systematized using the Hilbert type expansion in the corresponding perturbative and (for the KZK and NPE equations) paraxial ansatz . The use of small, to compare to the constant state perturbations, correctors allows to obtain the approximation results for the solutions of these models and to estimate the time during which they keep clos…
We prove the inviscid limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the same topology of Besov spaces as the initial data. The proof is based on proving the continuous dependence of the Navier-Stokes equations uniformly with respect to the viscosity. To show the latter, we rely on some Bona-Smith type method in the $L^p$ setting. Our obtained result implies a new result that the Cauchy problem of the Euler equations is locally well-posed in the borderline Besov space $B^{\frac dp+1}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $1\leq p\leq \infty$, $d\geq 2$, in the sense of Hadmard, which is an open proble…
In this paper we rule out the possibility of asymptotically self-similar singularities for both of the 3D Euler and the 3D Navier-Stokes equations. The notion means that the local in time classical solutions of the equations develop self-similar profiles as $t$ goes to the possible time of singularity $T$. For the Euler equations we consider the case where the vorticity converges to the corresponding self-similar voriticity profile in the sense of the critical Besov space norm, $\dot{B}^0_{1, \infty}(\Bbb R^3)$. For the Navier-Stokes equations the convergence of the velocity to the self-simila…
We prove the uniqueness and stability of entropy shocks to the isentropic Euler systems among all vanishing viscosity limits of solutions to associated Navier-Stokes systems. To take into account the vanishing viscosity limit, we show a contraction property for any large perturbations of viscous shocks to the Navier-Stokes system. The contraction estimate does not depend on the strength of the viscosity. This provides a good control on the inviscid limit process. We prove that, for any initial value, there exists a vanishing viscosity limit to solutions of the Navier-Stokes system. The converg…
We prove Liouville type of theorems for weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations. In particular, if the pressure satisfies $ p\in L^1 (0,T; L^1 (\Bbb R^N))$ with $\int_{\Bbb R^N} p(x,t)dx \geq 0$, then the corresponding velocity should be trivial, namely $v=0$ on $\Bbb R^N \times (0,T)$. In particular, this is the case when $p\in L^1 (0,T; \mathcal{H}^1 (\Bbb R^N))$, where $\mathcal{H}^1 (\Bbb R^N)$ the Hardy space. On the other hand, we have equipartition of energy over each component, if $p\in L^1 (0,T; L^1 (\Bbb R^N))$ with $\int_{\Bbb R^N} p(x,t)dx <0$. Similar results h…
We consider the damped and driven Navier--Stokes system with stress free boundary conditions and the damped Euler system in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbf{R}^2$. We show that the damped Euler system has a (strong) global attractor in~$H^1(Ω)$. We also show that in the vanishing viscosity limit the global attractors of the Navier--Stokes system converge in the non-symmetric Hausdorff distance in $H^1(Ω)$ to the the strong global attractor of the limiting damped Euler system (whose solutions are not necessarily unique).
