In this paper we give optimal lower bounds for the blow-up rate of the $\dot{H}^{s}\left(\mathbb{T}^3\right)$-norm, $\frac{1}{2}<s<\frac{5}{2}$, of a putative singular solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, and we also present an elementary proof for a lower bound on blow-up rate of the Sobolev norms of possible singular solutions to the Euler equations when $s>\frac{5}{2}$.
The paper deals with the Navier-Stokes equations in a strip in the class of spatially non-decaing (infinite-energy) solutions belonging to the properly chosen uniformly local Sobolev spaces. The global well-posedness and dissipativity of the Navier-Stokes equations in a strip in such spaces has been first established in [S. Zelik, "Spatially nondecaying solutions of the 2D Navier-Stokes equation in a strip". Glasg. Math. J., 49 (2007), no. 3, 525--588]. However, the proof given there contains rather essential error and the aim of the present paper is to correct this error and to show that the …
We prove new \emph{a priori} estimates for the 3D Euler, the 3D Navier-Stokes and the 2D quasi-geostrophic equations by the method of similarity transforms.
We show that weak solutions of degenerate Navier-Stokes equations converge to the strong solutions of the pressureless Euler system with linear drag term, Newtonian repulsion and quadratic confinement. The proof is based on the relative entropy method using the artificial velocity formulation for the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes system.
We consider the Euler-Voigt equations and the Navier-Stokes-Voigt equations, which are obtained by an inviscid alpha-regularization from the corresponding equations. The main result we show is the structural stability of the system in term of the variations of both viscosity of regularization parameters.
This work presents an approach to the Navier-Stokes equations that is phrased in unbiased Eulerian coordinates, yet describes objects that have Lagrangian significance: particle paths, their dispersion and diffusion. The commutator between Lagrangian and Eulerian derivatives plays an important role in the Navier-Stokes equations: it contributes a singular perturbation to the Euler equations, in addition to the Laplacian. Bounds for the Lagrangian displacements, their first and second derivatives are obtained without assumptions. Some of these rigorous bounds can be interpreted in terms of the …
We utilize undetermined coefficient method and an iterative method to construct the series solutions of the 3D Cauchy problem for a class of incompressible Navier-Stokes and Euler Equations. Then we can turn the Navier-Stokes Equations (Euler Equations) into the Cauchy problem for finitely (infinitely) many ordinary differential equations. We get the finite series solution of the Navier-Stokes Equations. By using some combinatorial identities techniques, we prove that the sum of the solutions to these ordinary differential equations is an infinite series solution of the Euler Equations in some…
We establish the validity of the Euler$+$Prandtl approximation for solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the half plane with Dirichlet boundary conditions, in the vanishing viscosity limit, for initial data which are analytic only near the boundary, and Sobolev smooth away from the boundary. Our proof does not require higher order correctors, and works directly by estimating an $L^{1}$-type norm for the vorticity of the error term in the expansion Navier-Stokes$-($Euler$+$Prandtl$)$. An important ingredient in the proof is the propagation of local analyticity for the Euler equation, a re…
We prove the existence of a solution for the second order system of partial differential equations $\partial_t f = ν\cdotΔf + g\cdot\nabla f + h\cdot f + k$ by a Montel space version of Arzelà--Ascoli and bound all Schwartz semi-norms. We find that for the Euler and the Navier--Stokes equations the vorticity remains a Schwartz function as long as the classical solution exists. Our approach is not affected by viscosity. It treats the hyperbolic Euler and the parabolic Navier--Stokes equation simultaneously.
We study blow-up rates and the blow-up profiles of possible asymptotically self-similar singularities of the 3D Euler equations, where the sense of convergence and self-similarity are considered in various sense. We extend much further, in particular, the previous nonexistence results of self-similar/asymptotically self-similar singularities obtained in \cite{cha1,cha2}. Some implications the notions for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations are also deduced. Generalization of the self-similar transforms is also considered, and by appropriate choice of the transform we obtain new \textit{a priori} es…
Non-uniqueness of Regular Solutions for Incompressible Static Euler Equations with Given Boundary Conditions and Turbulent Global Solutions of Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to the fact that the negative sign of the exponent of $R$ in (2.20) is not allowed by the second inequality of (2.2), and thus the desired vanishing in (2.20) could not be obtained by this method.
In this paper, the main objective is to generalize to the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (with density dependent viscosities satisfying the BD relation) and Euler-Korteweg systems a recent relative entropy [proposed by D. Bresch, P. Noble and J.--P. Vila, (2016)] introduced for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a linear density dependent shear viscosity and a zero bulk viscosity. As a concrete application, this helps to justify mathematically the convergence between global weak solutions of the quantum Navier-Stokes system [recently obtained simultaneously by I. Lacroix-Violet and A. Vasse…
In this paper, we study the global Cauchy problem for a two-phase fluid model consisting of the pressureless Euler equations and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations where the coupling of two equations is through the drag force. We establish the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions for that system when the initial data are sufficiently small and regular. Main difficulties arise in the absence of pressure in the Euler equations. In order to resolve it, we properly combine the large-time behavior of classical solutions and the bootstrapping argument to construct t…
We consider a system of two incompressible fluids separated by a free interface. The first fluid is inviscid, governed by the Euler system, while the second fluid has positive viscosity and is governed by the Navier-Stokes system. We formulate a notion of splash-type self-intersection singularities, and show that this system cannot form such a singularity in finite time. The main obstacle in our analysis is to handle the effect of bulk vorticity induced by the Navier-Stokes flow. To the best of our knowledge this is the first result on preclusion of splash-type singularities in the presence of…
Euler-Leray data functions of first and second order are defined by first and second order derivatives of the nonlinear spatial part of the incompressible Euler equation operator in Leray projection form applied to Cauchy data. The Lipschitz continuity of these functions for a certain class of strongly regular Cauchy data is sufficient for the existence of global regular upper bounds of incompressible Navier Stokes equation solutions. Global regular upper bounds of global solution branches of the incompressible Euler equation can be obtained for a class of strongly regular Cauchy data, if the …
We study scenarios of self-similar type blow-up for the incompressible Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations. The previous notions of the discretely (backward) self-similar solution and the asymptotically self-similar solution are generalized to the locally asymptotically discretely self-similar solution. We prove that there exists no such locally asymptotically discretely self-similar blow-up for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations if the blow-up profile is a time periodic function belonging to $C^1(\Bbb R ; L^3(\Bbb R^3)\cap C^2 (\Bbb R^3))$. For the 3D Euler equations we show that the scenario o…
The paper studies the issue of stability of solutions to the Navier-Stokes and damped Euler systems in periodic boxes. We show that under action of fast oscillating-in- time external forces all two dimensional regular solutions converge to a time periodic flow. Unexpectedly, effects of stabilization can be also obtained for systems with stationary forces with large total momentum (average of the velocity). Thanks to the Galilean transformation and space boundary conditions, the stationary force changes into one with time oscillations. In the three dimensional case we show an analogical result …
We prove the stability of contact discontinuities without shear, a family of special discontinuous solutions for the three-dimensional full Euler systems, in the class of vanishing dissipation limits of the corresponding Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. We also show that solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system converge to the contact discontinuity when the initial datum converges to the contact discontinuity itself. This implies the uniqueness of the contact discontinuity in the class that we are considering. Our results give an answer to the open question, whether the contact discontinuity…
We study Liouville type of theorems for the Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations on $\Bbb R^N$, $N\geq 2$. Specifically, we prove that if a weak solution $(v,p)$ satisfies $|v|^2 +|p| \in L^1 (0,T; L^1(\Bbb R^N, w_1(x)dx))$ and $\int_{\Bbb R^N} p(x,t)w_2 (x)dx \geq0$ for some weight functions $w_1(x)$ and $w_2 (x)$, then the solution is trivial, namely $v=0$ almost everywhere on $\Bbb R^N \times (0, T)$. Similar results hold for the MHD Equations on $\Bbb R^N$, $N\geq3$.
We present a new hydrodynamic model consisting of the pressureless Euler equations and the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations where the coupling of two systems is through the drag force. This coupled system can be derived, in the hydrodynamic limit, from the particle-fluid equations that are frequently used to study the medical sprays, aerosols and sedimentation problems. For the proposed system, we first construct the local-in-time classical solutions in an appropriate $L^2$ Sobolev space. We also establish the \emph{a priori} large-time behavior estimate by constructing a Lyapun…
Classical vorticity solution branches of the three dimensional incompressible Euler equation are constructed where a velocity component can blow up at some point after finite time for regular data in H2. Furthermore, vorticity can blow up after finite time for data in H2, and there are classical solution branches with regular data which develop weak singularities at some point of space time after finite time. The construction of these time-local solution branches is by viscosity limits of viscosity extensions of time-reversed Euler-type equations. The short time (weak) singularities are then i…
In this work we investigate some regularization properties of the incompressible Euler equations and of the fractional Navier-Stokes equations where the dissipative term is given by $(-Δ)^α$, for a suitable power $α\in (0,\frac{1}{2})$ (the only meaningful range for this result). Assuming that the solution $u \in L^\infty _t(C^θ_x)$ for some $θ\in (0,1)$ we prove that $u \in C^θ_{t,x}$, the pressure $p\in C^{2θ-}_{t,x}$ and the kinetic energy $e \in C^{\frac{2θ}{1-θ}}_t$. This result was obtained for the Euler equations in [Is13] with completely different arguments and we believe that our proo…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the singular relaxation limits for the Euler-Korteweg and the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system in the high friction regime. We shall prove that the viscosity term is present only in higher orders in the proposed scaling and therefore it does not affect the limiting dynamics, and the two models share the same equilibrium equation. The analysis of the limit is carried out using the relative entropy techniques in the framework of weak, finite energy solutions of the relaxation models converging toward smooth solutions of the equilibrium. The results proved her…
The derivation of different models of non linear acoustic in thermo-ellastic media as the Kuznetsov equation, the Khokhlov-Zabolotskaya-Kuznetsov (KZK) equation and the Nonlinear Progressive wave Equation (NPE) from an isentropic Navier-Stokes/Euler system is systematized using the Hilbert type expansion in the corresponding perturbative and (for the KZK and NPE equations) paraxial ansatz . The use of small, to compare to the constant state perturbations, correctors allows to obtain the approximation results for the solutions of these models and to estimate the time during which they keep clos…
We prove the inviscid limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the same topology of Besov spaces as the initial data. The proof is based on proving the continuous dependence of the Navier-Stokes equations uniformly with respect to the viscosity. To show the latter, we rely on some Bona-Smith type method in the $L^p$ setting. Our obtained result implies a new result that the Cauchy problem of the Euler equations is locally well-posed in the borderline Besov space $B^{\frac dp+1}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $1\leq p\leq \infty$, $d\geq 2$, in the sense of Hadmard, which is an open proble…
In this paper we rule out the possibility of asymptotically self-similar singularities for both of the 3D Euler and the 3D Navier-Stokes equations. The notion means that the local in time classical solutions of the equations develop self-similar profiles as $t$ goes to the possible time of singularity $T$. For the Euler equations we consider the case where the vorticity converges to the corresponding self-similar voriticity profile in the sense of the critical Besov space norm, $\dot{B}^0_{1, \infty}(\Bbb R^3)$. For the Navier-Stokes equations the convergence of the velocity to the self-simila…
We prove the uniqueness and stability of entropy shocks to the isentropic Euler systems among all vanishing viscosity limits of solutions to associated Navier-Stokes systems. To take into account the vanishing viscosity limit, we show a contraction property for any large perturbations of viscous shocks to the Navier-Stokes system. The contraction estimate does not depend on the strength of the viscosity. This provides a good control on the inviscid limit process. We prove that, for any initial value, there exists a vanishing viscosity limit to solutions of the Navier-Stokes system. The converg…
We prove Liouville type of theorems for weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations. In particular, if the pressure satisfies $ p\in L^1 (0,T; L^1 (\Bbb R^N))$ with $\int_{\Bbb R^N} p(x,t)dx \geq 0$, then the corresponding velocity should be trivial, namely $v=0$ on $\Bbb R^N \times (0,T)$. In particular, this is the case when $p\in L^1 (0,T; \mathcal{H}^1 (\Bbb R^N))$, where $\mathcal{H}^1 (\Bbb R^N)$ the Hardy space. On the other hand, we have equipartition of energy over each component, if $p\in L^1 (0,T; L^1 (\Bbb R^N))$ with $\int_{\Bbb R^N} p(x,t)dx <0$. Similar results h…
We consider the damped and driven Navier--Stokes system with stress free boundary conditions and the damped Euler system in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbf{R}^2$. We show that the damped Euler system has a (strong) global attractor in~$H^1(Ω)$. We also show that in the vanishing viscosity limit the global attractors of the Navier--Stokes system converge in the non-symmetric Hausdorff distance in $H^1(Ω)$ to the the strong global attractor of the limiting damped Euler system (whose solutions are not necessarily unique).
In this paper we study the Liouville-type properties for solutions to the steady incompressible Euler equations with forces in $\Bbb R^N$. If we assume "single signedness condition" on the force, then we can show that a $C^1 (\Bbb R^N)$ solution $(v,p)$ with $|v|^2+ |p|\in L^{\frac{q}{2}}(\Bbb R^N)$, $q\in (\frac{3N}{N-1}, \infty)$ is trivial, $v=0$. For the solution of of the steady Navier-Stokes equations, satisfying $v(x)\to 0$ as $|x|\to \infty$, the condition $\int_{\Bbb R^3} |Δv|^{\frac65} dx<\infty$, which is stronger than the important D-condition, $\int_{\Bbb R^3} |\nabla v|^2 dx <\in…
In this paper we analyze the high friction regime for the Navier Stokes Korteweg equations for multicomponent systems. According to the shape of the mixing and friction terms, we shall perform two limits: the high friction limit toward an equilibrium system for the limit densities and the barycentric velocity, and, after an appropriate time scaling, the diffusive relaxation toward parabolic, gradient flow equations for the limit densities. The rigorous justification of these limits is done by means of relative entropy techniques in the framework of weak, finite energy solutions of the relaxati…
We identify a class of measure-valued solutions of the barotropic Euler system on a general (un-bounded) spatial domain as a vanishing viscosity limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes system. Then we establish the weak (measure-valued)-strong uniqueness principle, and, as a corollary, we obtain strong convergence to the Euler system on the lifespan of the strong solution.
The potential failure of energy equality for a solution $u$ of the Euler or Navier-Stokes equations can be quantified using a so-called `energy measure': the weak-$*$ limit of the measures $|u(t)|^2\,\mbox{d}x$ as $t$ approaches the first possible blowup time. We show that membership of $u$ in certain (weak or strong) $L^q L^p$ classes gives a uniform lower bound on the lower local dimension of $\mathcal{E}$; more precisely, it implies uniform boundedness of a certain upper $s$-density of $\mathcal{E}$. We also define and give lower bounds on the `concentration dimension' associated to $\mathc…
Different authors had received a lot of results regarding the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. Existence and smoothness of solution for the Navier-Stokes equations in two dimensions have been known for a long time. Leray showed that the Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensional space have a weak solution. Scheffer, and Shnirelman, obtained weak solution of the Euler equations with compact support in spacetime. Caffarelli, Kohn and Nirenberg improved Scheffer's results, and F.-H. Lin simplified the proof of the results of J. Leray. Many problems and conjectures about behavior of weak solut…
We consider the convergence in the $L^2$ norm, uniformly in time, of the Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions to the Euler equations with slip boundary conditions. We prove that if the Oleinik conditions of no back-flow in the trace of the Euler flow, and of a lower bound for the Navier-Stokes vorticity is assumed in a Kato-like boundary layer, then the inviscid limit holds.
In this paper, we consider the zero-viscosity limit of the Navier-Stokes equations in a half space with the Navier friction boundary condition $$ (βu^{\varepsilon}-\varepsilon^γ\partial_y u^{\varepsilon})|_{y=0}=0, $$ where $β$ is a constant and $γ\in (0,1]$. In the case of $γ=1$, the convergence to the Euler equations and the Prandtl equation with the Robin boundary condition is justified for the analytic data. In the case of $γ\in (0,1)$, the convergence to the Euler equations and the linearized Prandtl equation is justified for the data in the Gevrey class $\frac 1 γ$.
We derive the 1D isentropic Euler and Navier-Stokes equations describing the motion of a gas through a nozzle of variable cross section as the asymptotic limit of the 3D isentropic Navier-Stokes system in a cylinder, the diameter of which tends to zero. Our method is based on the relative energy inequality satisfied by any weak solution of the 3D Navier-Stokes system and a variant of Korn-Poincare's inequality on thin channels that may be of independent interest.
The main result of [C. Morosi and L. Pizzocchero, Nonlinear Analysis, 2012] is presented in a variant, based on a C^infinity formulation of the Cauchy problem; in this approach, the a posteriori analysis of an approximate solution gives a bound on the Sobolev distance of any order between the exact and the approximate solution.
Fractional Navier-Stokes equations -- featuring a fractional Laplacian -- provide a `bridge' between the Euler equations (zero diffusion) and the Navier-Stokes equations (full diffusion). The problem of whether an initially smooth flow can spontaneously develop a singularity is a fundamental problem in mathematical physics, open for the full range of models -- from Euler to Navier-Stokes. The purpose of this work is to present a hybrid, geometric-analytic regularity criterion for solutions to the 3D fractional Navier-Stokes equations expressed as a balance -- in the average sense -- between th…
