In this paper, we introduce the Fourier-restricted Euler and hypodissipative Navier--Stokes equations. These equations are analogous to the Euler and hypodissipative Navier--Stokes equations respectively, but with the Helmholtz projection replaced by a projection onto a more restrictive constraint space; the $(u\cdot\nabla)u$ nonlinearity is otherwise unchanged. The constraint space restricts the divergence-free velocity to specific Fourier modes, which have a dyadic shell structure, and are constructed iteratively using permutations.
In the inviscid case -- and in the hypo-viscous case when $α<\frac{\log(3)}{6\log(2)} \approx .264$ -- we prove finite-time blowup for a set of solutions with a discrete group of symmetries. Our blowup Ansatz is odd, permutation symmetric, and mirror symmetric about the plane $x_1+x_2+x_3=0$. The Fourier-restricted Euler and hypodissipative Navier--Stokes equations respect both the energy equality and the identity for enstrophy growth from the full Euler and hypodissipative Navier--Stokes equations respectively, which is a substantial advance over the previous literature on Euler and Navier--Stokes model equations.
We consider the hypodissipative Navier-Stokes equations on $[0,T]\times\mathbb{T}^{d}$ and seek to construct non-unique, Hölder-continuous solutions with epochs of regularity (smooth almost everywhere outside a small singular set in time), using convex integration techniques. In particular, we give quantitative relationships between the power of the fractional Laplacian, the dimension of the singular set, and the regularity of the solution. In addition, we also generalize the usual vector calculus arguments to higher dimensions with Lagrangian coordinates.
In this work we investigate some regularization properties of the incompressible Euler equations and of the fractional Navier-Stokes equations where the dissipative term is given by $(-Δ)^α$, for a suitable power $α\in (0,\frac{1}{2})$ (the only meaningful range for this result). Assuming that the solution $u \in L^\infty _t(C^θ_x)$ for some $θ\in (0,1)$ we prove that $u \in C^θ_{t,x}$, the pressure $p\in C^{2θ-}_{t,x}$ and the kinetic energy $e \in C^{\frac{2θ}{1-θ}}_t$. This result was obtained for the Euler equations in [Is13] with completely different arguments and we believe that our proo…

In this note, boundary Type I blowups of suitable weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations are discussed. In particular, it has been shown that, under certain assumptions, the existence of non-trivial mild bounded ancient solutions in half space leads to the existence of suitable weak solutions with Type I blowup on the boundary.
In this paper, we give two family of explicit blowup solution for $3$D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\RR^3$. Here one family of solutions admit the smooth initial data, and the initial data of another family of solutions are not smooth. The energy of those solutions is infinite.

Assuming that ${T}$ is a potential blow up time for the Navier-Stokes system in half-space, we show that $L_{3}$-norm of the velocity field goes to $\infty$ as time t approaches $T$.
In this paper, we establish the existence and uniqueness of local strong solutions to the kinetic Cucker--Smale model coupled with the isentropic compressible Navier--Stokes equation in the whole space. Moreover, the blowup mechanism for strong solutions to the coupled system is also investigated.
We establish a blowup criterion for the two-dimensional (2D) full compressible Navier-Stokes system. The criterion is given in terms of the divergence of the velocity field only, and is independent of the temperature. It is almost the same as that of barotropic case.
A blowup criteria along maximum point of the 3D-Navier-Stokes flow in terms of function spaces with variable growth condition is constructed. This criterion is different from the Beale-Kato-Majda type and Constantin-Fefferman type criterion. If geometric behavior of the velocity vector field near the maximum point has a kind of symmetry up to a possible blowup time, then the solution can be extended to be the strong solution beyond the possible blowup time.
Assuming $T$ is a potential blow up time for the Navier-Stokes system in $\mathbb{R}^3$ or $\mathbb{R}^3_+$, we show that the $L^{3,q}$ Lorentz norm, with $q$ finite, of the velocity field goes to infinity as time $t$ approaches $T$.
It is shown that the one-dimensional or two-dimensional radially symmetric isothermal compressible Navier-Stokes system has no non-trivial global smooth solutions if the initial density is compactly supported. This result is a generalization of Xin's work \cite{Xin98} to the isothermal case.
In this paper we consider smooth solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations with a linear dependence on the spatial variable. We reduce the evolution of these solutions to a matrix ODE, and show that there are such solutions that blowup in finite-time. Note that because these solutions have linear growth at infinity, this blowup is not a counterexample disproving the global regularity of strong solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations, as strong solutions must have sufficient decay at infinity. This paper does not resolve the Millennium Problem. Nonetheless, these solutions do exhibit several …
We prove quantitative regularity and blowup theorems for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb R^d$, $d\geq4$ when the solution lies in the critical space $L_t^\infty L_x^d$. Explicit subcritical bounds on the solution are obtained in terms of the critical norm. A consequence is that $\|u(t)\|_{L_x^d(\mathbb R^d)}$ grows at a minimum rate of $(\log\log\log\log(T_*-t)^{-1})^c$ along a sequence of times approaching a hypothetical blowup at $T_*$. These results quantify a theorem of Dong and Du and extend the three-dimensional work of Tao.
This paper is concerned with the blowup criterion for mild solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in higher spatial dimensions $d \geq 4$. By establishing an $ε$ regularity criterion, we show that if the mild solution $u$ with initial data in $\dot B^{-1+d/p}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^d) $, $d<p,\,q<\infty$ becomes singular at a finite time $T_*$, then $$ \limsup_{t\to T_*} \|u(t)\|_{\dot B^{-1+d/p}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^d)} = \infty. $$ The corresponding result in 3D case has been obtained by I.Gallagher, G.S.KochandF.Planchon. As a by-product, we also prove a regularity criterion for the Le…

We study the finite time blow up of smooth solutions to the Compressible Navier-Stokes system when the initial data contain vacuums. We prove that any classical solutions of viscous compressible fluids without heat conduction will blow up in finite time, as long as the initial data has an isolated mass group (see definition in the paper). The results hold regardless of either the size of the initial data or the far fields being vacuum or not. This improves the blowup results of Xin (1998) by removing the crucial assumptions that the initial density has compact support and the smooth solution h…
The Navier-Stokes equation on the Euclidean space $\mathbf{R}^3$ can be expressed in the form $\partial_t u = Δu + B(u,u)$, where $B$ is a certain bilinear operator on divergence-free vector fields $u$ obeying the cancellation property $\langle B(u,u), u\rangle=0$ (which is equivalent to the energy identity for the Navier-Stokes equation). In this paper, we consider a modification $\partial_t u = Δu + \tilde B(u,u)$ of this equation, where $\tilde B$ is an averaged version of the bilinear operator $B$ (where the average involves rotations and Fourier multipliers of order zero), and which also …
We study the 4-dimensional pressureless Navier--Stokes-Poisson equations with density-dependent viscosity. The analytical solutions with arbitrary time blowup, in radial symmetry, are constructed in this paper.
In the note, a local regularity condition for axisymmetric solutions to the non-stationary 3D Navier-Stokes equations is proven. It reads that axially symmetric energy solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations have no Type I blowups.
This paper considers the immediate blowup of entropy-bounded classical solutions to the vacuum free boundary problem of non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The viscosities and the heat conductivity could be constants, or more physically, the degenerate, temperature-dependent functions which vanish on the vacuum boundary (i.e., $μ=\barμ θ^α, ~ λ=\barλ θ^α,~ κ=\barκ θ^α$, for constants $0\leq α\leq 1/(γ-1)$, $\barμ>0,~2\barμ+n\barλ\geq0,~\barκ\geq 0$, and adiabatic exponent $γ>1$). With prescribed decaying rate of the initial density across the vacuum boundary, we prove that: (1…
It is known that smooth solutions to the non-isentropic Navier-Stokes equations without heat-conductivity may lose their regularities in finite time in the presence of vacuum. However, in spite of the recent progress on such blowup phenomenon, it remain to give a possible blowup mechanism. In this paper, we present a simple continuation principle for such system, which asserts that the concentration of the density or the temperature occurs in finite time for a large class of smooth initial data, which is responsible for the breakdown of classical solutions. It also give an affirmative answer t…
In the paper, we have introduced the notion of mild bounded ancient solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in a half space. They play a certain role in understanding whether or not solutions to the initial boundary value problem for the Navier-Stokes system with non-slip boundary conditions have blowups of Type I.
We study the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NS) in three and higher spatial dimensions: \begin{align} u_t -Δu+u\cdot \nabla u +\nabla p=0, \ \ {\rm div} u=0, \ \ u(0,x)= u_0(x). \label{NSa} \end{align} Leray and Giga obtained that for the weak and mild solutions $u$ of NS in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ which blow up at finite time $T>0$, respectively, one has that for $d <p \leq \infty$, $$ \|u(t)\|_p \gtrsim ( T-t )^{-(1-d/p)/2}, \ \ 0< t<T. $$ We will obtain the blowup profile and the concentration phenomena in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ with $d\leq p\leq \infty$ for the blo…
We extend the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg type partial regularity theory for the steady $5$-dimensional fractional Navier-Stokes equations with external force to the hyperdissipative setting. In our argument we use the methods of Colombo-De Lellis-Massaccesi to apply a blowup procedure adapted from work of Ladyzhenskaya-Seregin.
We prove a quantitative regularity theorem and blowup criterion for classical solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations satisfying certain critical conditions. The solutions we consider have $\|r^{1-\frac3q}u\|_{L_t^\infty L_x^q}<\infty$ where $r=\sqrt{x_1^2+x_2^2}$ and either $q\in(3,\infty)$, or $u$ is axisymmetric and $q\in(2,3]$. Using the strategy of Tao (2019), we obtain improved subcritical estimates for such solutions depending only on the double exponential of the critical norm. One consequence is a double logarithmic lower bound on the blowup rate. We make use of som…
The potential failure of energy equality for a solution $u$ of the Euler or Navier-Stokes equations can be quantified using a so-called `energy measure': the weak-$*$ limit of the measures $|u(t)|^2\,\mbox{d}x$ as $t$ approaches the first possible blowup time. We show that membership of $u$ in certain (weak or strong) $L^q L^p$ classes gives a uniform lower bound on the lower local dimension of $\mathcal{E}$; more precisely, it implies uniform boundedness of a certain upper $s$-density of $\mathcal{E}$. We also define and give lower bounds on the `concentration dimension' associated to $\mathc…
For periodic initial data with initial density allowed to vanish, we establish the global existence of strong and weak solutions for the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with no restrictions on the size of initial data provided the bulk viscosity coefficient is $λ= ρ^β$ with $β>4/3$. These results generalize and improve the previous ones due to Vaigant-Kazhikhov([Sib. Math. J. (1995), 36(6), 1283-1316]) which requires $β>3$. Moreover, both the uniform upper bound of the density and the large-time behavior of the strong and weak solutions are also obtained.
This paper establishes a blowup criterion for the three-dimensional viscous, compressible, and heat conducting magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows. It is essentially shown that for the Cauchy problem and the initial-boundary-value one of the three-dimensional compressible MHD flows with initial density allowed to vanish, the strong or smooth solution exists globally if the density is bounded from above and the velocity satisfies the Serrin's condition. Therefore, if the Serrin norm of the velocity remains bounded, it is not possible for other kinds of singularities (such as vacuum states vanish or…
If $u$ is a smooth solution of the Navier--Stokes equations on ${\mathbb R}^3$ with first blowup time $T$, we prove lower bounds for $u$ in the Sobolev spaces $\dot H^{3/2}$, $\dot H^{5/2}$, and the Besov space $\dot B^{5/2}_{2,1}$, with optimal rates of blowup: we prove the strong lower bounds $\|u(t)\|_{\dot H^{3/2}}\ge c(T-t)^{-1/2}$ and $\|u(t)\|_{\dot B^{5/2}_{2,1}}\ge c(T-t)^{-1}$, but in $\dot H^{5/2}$ we only obtain the weaker result $\limsup_{t\to T^-}(T-t)\|u(t)\|_{\dot H^{5/2}}\ge c$. The proofs involve new inequalities for the nonlinear term in Sobolev and Besov spaces, both of whi…
In this paper we describe a method to derive solutions of the incompressible Navier- Stokes system of equations for non-stationary initial value problems in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We show that for a given smooth solenoidal initial velocity vector field there exist smooth spatially periodic solutions of pressure and velocity in $\mathbb{R}^n$. An illustrative example in $\mathbb{R}^3$ provides important insights into the ostensible phenomenon of the blowup time.
Fluid configurations in three-dimensions, displaying a plausible decay of regularity in a finite time, are suitably built and examined. Vortex rings are the primary ingredients in this study. The full Navier-Stokes system is converted into a 3D scalar problem, where appropriate numerical methods are implemented in order to figure out the behavior of the solutions. Further simplifications in 2D and 1D provide interesting toy problems, that may be used as a starting platform for a better understanding of blowup phenomena.
We find a new scaling invariance of the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Then it is shown that type I singularities of solutions with $$\limsup_{t \nearrow T}|{\rm div} u(t, x)|(T - t) \leq κ,$$ can never happen at time $T$ for all adiabatic number $γ\geq 1$. Here $κ> 0$ doesn't depend on the initial data. This is achieved by proving the regularity of solutions under $$ρ(t, x) \leq \frac{M}{(T - t)^κ},\quad M < \infty.$$ This new scaling invariance also motivates us to construct an explicit type II blowup solution for $γ> 1$.
We analyze the Vlasov equation coupled with the compressible Navier--Stokes equations with degenerate viscosities and vacuum. These two equations are coupled through the drag force which depends on the fluid density and the relative velocity between particle and fluid. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of local-in-time regular solutions with arbitrarily large initial data and a vacuum. We then present sufficient conditions on the initial data leading to the finite-time blowup of regular solutions. In particular, our study makes the result on the finite-time singularity formation …
When a Leray--Hopf weak solution to the NSE has a singularity set $S$ of dimension $d$ less than $3$---for example, a suitable weak solution---we find a family of new $L^q L^p$ conditions that guarantee validity of the energy equality. Our conditions surpass the classical Lions--Ladyženskaja $L^4 L^4$ result in the case $d<1$. Additionally, we establish energy equality in certain cases of Type-I blowup. The results are also extended to the NSE with fractional power of the Laplacian below $1$.
In this paper, we will prove a new, scale critical regularity criterion for solutions of the Navier--Stokes equation that are sufficiently close to being eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. This estimate improves previous regularity criteria requiring control on the $\dot{H}^α$ norm of $u,$ with $2\leq α<\frac{5}{2},$ to a regularity criterion requiring control on the $\dot{H}^α$ norm multiplied by the deficit in the interpolation inequality for the embedding of $\dot{H}^{α-2}\cap\dot{H}^α \hookrightarrow \dot{H}^{α-1}.$ This regularity criterion suggests, at least heuristically, the possibility …
