In the framework of ordinary-derivative approach, conformal gravity in space-time of dimension six is studied. The field content, in addition to conformal graviton field, includes two auxiliary rank-2 symmetric tensor fields, two Stueckelberg vector fields and one Stueckelberg scalar field. Gauge invariant Lagrangian with conventional kinetic terms and the corresponding gauge transformations are obtained. One of the rank-2 tensor fields and the scalar field have canonical conformal dimension. With respect to these fields, the Lagrangian contains, in addition to other terms, a cubic potential. Gauging away the Stueckelberg fields and excluding the auxiliary fields via equations of motion, the higher-derivative Lagrangian of 6d conformal gravity is obtained. The higher derivative Lagrangian involves quadratic and cubic curvature terms. This higher-derivative Lagrangian coincides with the simplest Weyl invariant density discussed in the earlier literature. Generalization of de Donder gauge conditions to 6d conformal fields is also obtained.
In the framework of gauge invariant Stueckelberg approach, totally symmetric arbitrary spin shadow fields in flat space-time of dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Gauge invariant two-point vertices for such shadow fields are obtained. We demonstrate that, in Stueckelberg gauge frame, these gauge invariant vertices become the standard two-point vertices of CFT. Light-cone gauge two-point vertices of the shadow fields are also obtained. AdS/CFT correspondence for the shadow fields and the non-normalizable solutions of free massless totally symmetric arbitrary spin AdS fields is…
Conformal totally symmetric arbitrary spin bosonic fields in flat space-time of even dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Second-derivative (ordinary-derivative) formulation for such fields is developed. We obtain gauge invariant Lagrangian and the corresponding gauge transformations. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving the Stueckelberg and auxiliary fields. Realization of global conformal boost symmetries on conformal gauge fields is obtained. Modified de Donder gauge condition and de Donder-Stueckelberg gauge condition are introduced. Using the de Donder-Stueckelberg g…
Curvature squared terms, when added to the Einstein-Hilbert action and treated non-perturbatively, generically result in the propagation of an extra massive scalar state and an extra massive spin-2 ghost state. Using the Stueckelberg trick, we study the high-energy limit in which the mass of the spin-2 state is taken to zero, with strong- coupling scales held fixed. The Stueckelberg approach makes transparent the interplay between the ghost graviton and the healthy graviton which allows the theory to evade the usual lambda-3 strong coupling scale of massive gravity and become renormalizable, a…
It is demonstrated that a Stueckelberg-type gauge theory, coupled to the scalar-tensor theory of gravity, is invariant under both gauge and Weyl transformations. Unlike the pure Stueckelberg theory, this coupled Lagrangian has a genuine Weyl symmetry, with a non-vanishing current. The above is true in the Jordan frame, whereas in the Einstein frame, the same theory manifests as Proca theory in presence of pure gravity. It is found that broken scale invariance leads to simultaneous spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry.
Weyl conformal geometry may play a role in early cosmology where effective theory at short distances becomes conformal. Weyl conformal geometry also has a built-in geometric Stueckelberg mechanism: it is broken spontaneously to Riemannian geometry after a Weyl gauge transformation (of "gauge fixing") while Stueckelberg mechanism re-arranges the degrees of freedom, conserving their number ($n_{df}$). The Weyl gauge field ($ω_μ$) of local scale transformations acquires a mass after absorbing a compensator (dilaton), decouples, and Weyl connection becomes Riemannian. Mass generation has thus a dy…
Cohomological techniques within the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) extension of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism have proved invaluable for classifying consistent deformations of gauge theories. In this work we investigate the application of this idea to massive field theories in the Stueckelberg formulation. Starting with a collection of free massive vectors, we show that the cohomological method reproduces the cubic and quartic vertices of massive Yang-Mills theory. In the same way, taking a Fierz-Pauli graviton on a maximally symmetric space as the starting point, we are able to reco…
In the framework of gauge invariant approach involving Stueckelberg and auxiliary fields, totally symmetric arbitrary spin anomalous conformal current and shadow field in flat space-time of dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Gauge invariant differential constraints for such anomalous conformal current and shadow field and realization of global conformal symmetries are obtained. Gauge invariant two-point vertex of the arbitrary spin anomalous shadow field is also obtained. In Stueckelberg gauge frame, the two-point gauge invariant vertex becomes the standard two-point vertex o…

Second-derivative formulation for spin 0,1,2 conformal bosonic fields and first-derivative formulation for spin 1/2,3/2 conformal fermionic fields are developed. For the spin 1,3/2,2 conformal fields, we obtain gauge invariant Lagrangians and the corresponding gauge transformations. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving Stueckelberg fields and auxiliary fields. Realization of global conformal boost symmetries is obtained. Modified Lorentz and de Donder gauge conditions are introduced. Ordinary…
Conformal low-spin anomalous currents and shadow fields in flat space-time of dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Gauge invariant formulation for such currents and shadow fields is developed. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving Stueckelberg and auxiliary fields. Gauge invariant differential constraints for anomalous currents and shadow fields and realization of global conformal symmetries are obtained. Gauge invariant two-point vertices for anomalous shadow fields are also obtained. In Stueckelberg gauge frame, these gauge invariant vertices become the standard two-poin…
The so called "New Massive Gravity" in $D=2+1$ consists of the Einstein-Hilbert action (with minus sign) plus a quadratic term in curvatures ($K$-term). Here we perform the Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction of the linearized $K$-term to $D=1+1$. We end up with a fourth-order massive electrodynamics in $D=1+1$ described by a rank-2 tensor. Remarkably, there appears a local symmetry in $D=1+1$ which persists even after gauging away the Stueckelberg fields of the dimensional reduction. It plays the role of a $U(1)$ gauge symmetry. Although of higher-order in derivatives, the new $2D$ massive ele…
We revisit and extend the `Effective field theory for massive gravitons' constructed by Arkani-Hamed, Georgi and Schwartz in the light of recent progress in constructing ghost-free theories with multiple interacting spin-2 fields. We show that there exist several dual ways of restoring gauge invariance in such multi-gravity theories, find a generalised Fierz-Pauli tuning condition relevant in this context and highlight subtleties in demixing tensor and scalar modes. The generic multi-gravity feature of scalar mixing and its consequences for higher order interactions are discussed. In particula…
Conformal totally symmetric arbitrary spin fermionic fields propagating in the flat space-time of even dimension greater than or equal to four are investigated. First-derivative metric-like formulation involving Fang-Fronsdal kinetic operator for such fields is developed. Gauge invariant Lagrangian and the corresponding gauge transformations are obtained. Gauge symmetries of the Lagrangian are realized by using auxiliary fields and the Stueckelberg fields. Realization of conformal algebra symmetries on the space of conformal gauge fermionic fields is obtained. The on-shell degrees of freedom o…
We perform canonical quantization of the Stueckelberg Lagrangian for massive vector fields in the conformally flat patch of de Sitter space in the Bunch-Davies vacuum and find their Wightman two-point functions by the mode-sum method. We discuss the zero-mass limit of these two-point functions and their limits where the Stueckelberg parameter $ξ$ tends to zero or infinity. It is shown that our results reproduce the standard flat-space propagator in the appropriate limit. We also point out that the classic work of Allen and Jacobson for the two-point function of the Proca field and a recent wor…
Conformal self-dual fields in flat space-time of even dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Ordinary-derivative formulation of such fields is developed. Gauge invariant Lagrangian with conventional kinetic terms and corresponding gauge transformations are obtained. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving the Stueckelberg fields. Realization of global conformal symmetries is obtained. Light-cone gauge Lagrangian is found. Also, we demonstrate use of the light-cone gauge for counting of on-shell degrees of freedom of the conformal self-dual fields.
We consider Yang-Mills theory with a compact gauge group $G$ on Minkowski space ${\mathbb R}^{3,1}$ and compare the introduction of masses of gauge bosons using the Stueckelberg and Higgs mechanisms. The Stueckelberg field $ϕ$ is identified with a $G$-frame on the gauge vector bundle $E$ and the kinetic term for $ϕ$ leads to the mass of the gauge bosons. The Stueckelberg mechanism is extended to the Higgs mechanism by adding to the game a scalar field describing rescaling of metric on fibres of $E$. Thus, we associate Higgs fields as well as running coupling parameters with conformal geometry …
The ghost-free theory of massive gravity has exact solutions where the effective stress energy generated by the graviton mass term is a cosmological constant for any isotropic metric. Since they are exact, these solutions mimic a cosmological constant in the presence of any matter-induced isotropic metric perturbation. In the Stueckelberg formulation, this stress energy is carried entirely by the spatial Stueckelberg field. We show that any stress energy carried by fluctuations in the spatial field away from the exact solution always decays away in an expanding universe. However, the dynamics …
In the framework of metric-like approach, totally symmetric arbitrary spin bosonic conformal fields propagating in flat space-time are studied. Depending on the values of conformal dimension, spin, and dimension of space-time, we classify all conformal field as long, partial-short, short, and special conformal fields. An ordinary-derivative (second-derivative) Lagrangian formulation for such conformal fields is obtained. The ordinary-derivative Lagrangian formulation is realized by using double-traceless gauge fields, Stueckelberg fields, and auxiliary fields. Gauge-fixed Lagrangian invariant …
Lorentz-invariant massive gravity is usually associated with a strong coupling scale $Λ_3$. By including non-trivial effects from the Stueckelberg modes, we show that about these vacua, one can push the strong coupling scale to higher values and evade the linear vDVZ-discontinuity. For generic parameters of the theory and generic vacua for the Stueckelberg fields, the $Λ_2$-decoupling limit of the theory is well-behaved and free of any ghost or gradient-like instabilities. We also discuss the implications for nonlinear sigma models with Lorentzian target spaces.
Lovelock theory of gravity -and, in particular, Einstein theory- admits black hole solutions that can be equipped with a hair by conformally coupling the theory to a real scalar field. This is a secondary hair, meaning that it does not endow the black hole with new quantum numbers. It rather consists of a non-trivial scalar field profile of fixed intensity which turns out to be regular everywhere outside and on the horizon and, provided the cosmological constant is negative, behaves at large distance in a way compatible with the Anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotic. In this paper, we review the mai…
We present the complete form of the decoupling limit of ghost-free massive gravity with a Minkowski reference metric, including the full interactions of the helicity-1 and helicity-0 modes of the massive spin-2 field. While in the metric language the square root structure of the mass terms makes it difficult to find a simple way to write down the interactions, we show that using the vierbein formulation of massive gravity, including Stueckelberg fields for both diffeomorphism and local Lorentz symmetries, we can find an explicitly resummed expression for the helicity-1 field interactions. We c…
The background field method is used to linearize the Weyl invariant scalar-tensor gravity, coupled with a Stueckelberg field. For a generic background metric, this action is found to be not invariant, under both diffeomorphism and generalized Weyl symmetry, the latter being a combination of gauge and Weyl transformations. Interestingly, the quadratic Lagrangian, emerging from a background of Minkowski metric, respects both the transformations, independently. Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry of scalar-tensor gravity coupled with a Stueckelberg-like massive gauge particle, possessing di…
Cubic interactions between the simplest mixed-symmetry gauge field and gravity are constructed in anti-de Sitter (AdS) and flat backgrounds. Nonabelian cubic interactions are obtained in AdS following various perturbative methods including the Fradkin-Vasiliev construction, with and without Stueckelberg fields. The action that features the maximal number of Stueckelberg fields can be considered in the flat limit without loss of physical degrees of freedom. The resulting interactions in flat space are compared with a classification of vertices obtained via the antifield cohomological perturbati…
Totally symmetric arbitrary spin conformal fields in (A)dS space of even dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Ordinary-derivative and gauge invariant Lagrangian formulation for such fields is obtained. Gauge symmetries are realized by using auxiliary fields and Stueckelberg fields. We demonstrate that Lagrangian of conformal field is decomposed into a sum of gauge invariant Lagrangians for massless, partial-massless, and massive fields. We obtain a mass spectrum of the partial-massless and massive fields and confirm the conjecture about the mass spectrum made in the earlier lit…
Relaxation of first-class constraints and the quantization of gauge theories: from "matter without matter" to the reappearance of time in quantum gravity
Using Poincare parametrization of AdS space, we study totally symmetric arbitrary spin massless fields in AdS space of dimension greater than or equal to four. CFT adapted gauge invariant formulation for such fields is developed. Gauge symmetries are realized similarly to the ones of Stueckelberg formulation of massive fields. We demonstrate that the curvature and radial coordinate contributions to the gauge transformation and Lagrangian of the AdS fields can be expressed in terms of ladder operators. Realization of the global AdS symmetries in the conformal algebra basis is obtained. Modified…
We study the Standard Model (SM) in Weyl conformal geometry. This embedding is natural and truly minimal {\it with no new fields} required beyond the SM spectrum and Weyl geometry. The action inherits a gauged scale symmetry $D(1)$ (known as Weyl gauge symmetry) from the underlying geometry. The associated Weyl quadratic gravity undergoes spontaneous breaking of $D(1)$ by a geometric Stueckelberg mechanism in which the Weyl gauge field ($ω_μ$) acquires mass by "absorbing" the spin-zero mode ($ϕ_0$) of the $\tilde R^2$ term in the action. This mode also generates the Planck scale and the cosmol…
The holographic dual of a gravitational theory around the de Sitter background is argued to be a Euclidean conformal gravity theory in one fewer dimensions. The measure for the holographic theory naturally includes a sum over topologies as well as conformal structures.
We show that that four dimensional conformal gravity plus a simple Neumann boundary condition can be used to get the semiclassical (or tree level) wavefunction of the universe of four dimensional asymptotically de-Sitter or Euclidean anti-de Sitter spacetimes. This simple Neumann boundary condition selects the Einstein solution out of the more numerous solutions of conformal gravity. It thus removes the ghosts of conformal gravity from this computation. In the case of a five dimensional pure gravity theory with a positive cosmological constant we show that the late time superhorizon tree level…
We analyse the conservation laws in the gauge gravity theory which are derived for the general class of gravitational models with the action invariant under the local Poincare and the diffeomorphism group. The consistent Noether-Lagrange formalism is developed, revealing the important role of the auxiliary Goldstone and Stueckelberg fields, with the help of which we construct the composite gauge fields that have a clear geometrical and physical meaning.
We consider ultra-relativistic limit of the spin-2 and spin-3 conformal gravity theories in three dimensions, which leads to conformal Carrollian spin-2 gravity and its spin-3 analog. We also comment on the generalization of the result to arbitrary spin. The holographic examples show generalization in comparison with non-conformal Carrollian gravity.
A new theory for the conformal factor in R$^2$-gravity is developed. The infrared phase of this theory, which follows from the one-loop renormalization group equations for the whole quantum R$^2$-gravity theory is described. The one-loop effective potential for the conformal factor is found explicitly and a mechanism for inducing Einstein gravity at the minimum of the effective potential for the conformal factor is suggested. A comparison with the effective theory of the conformal factor induced by the conformal anomaly, and also aiming to describe quantum gravity at large distances, is done.
We summarize some recent results on the BRST analysis of physical states of 2D gravity coupled to c<=1 conformal matter and the supersymmetric generalization.
Conformal theories in a d dimensional spacetime may be expressed as manifestly conformal theories in a d+2 dimensional conformal space as first proposed by Dirac. The reduction to d dimensions goes via the d+1 dimensional hypercone in the conformal space. Here we give a rather extensive expose of such theories. We review and extend the theory of spinning conformal particles. We give a precise and geometrical formulation of manifestly conformal fields for which we give a consistent action principle. The requirement of invariance under special gauge transformations off the hypercone plays a fund…
We introduce conformal traceless decomposition in Lagrange Multiplier modified RFDiff invariant Horava-Lifshitz gravity. We perform Hamiltonian analysis of given action and determine the action for the physical degrees of freedom.
In this review paper, we discuss how gravity and spin can be obtained as the realization of the local Conformal-Affine group of symmetry transformations. In particular, we show how gravitation is a gauge theory which can be obtained starting from local invariance as the Poincaré local symmetry.
The conformal invariance of unimodular gravity survives quantum corrections, even in the presence of conformal matter. Unimodular gravity can actually be understood as a certain truncation of the full Einstein-Hilbert theory, where in the Einstein frame the metric tensor enjoys unit determinant. Our result is compatible with the idea that the corresponding restriction in the functional integral is consistent as well.
We construct a gravity dual for scale invariant but non-conformal field theories with a cyclic renormalization group flow. A slight modification of our construction gives a gravity dual of discretely scale invariant field theories. The underlying gravitational theory breaks the null energy condition.
We discuss the conditions under which classically conformally invariant models in four dimensions can arise out of non-conformal (Einstein) gravity. As an `existence proof' that this is indeed possible we show how to derive N=4 super Yang Mills theory with any compact gauge group G from non-conformal gauged N=4 supergravity as a special flat space limit. We stress the role that the anticipated UV finiteness of the (so far unknown) underlying theory of quantum gravity would have to play in such a scheme, as well as the fact that the masses of elementary particles would have to arise via quantum…
Using the proposal for holographic entanglement entropy in higher derivative gravities, we compute holographic entanglement entropy for the conformal gravity in four dimensions which turns out to be finite. However, if one subtracts the contribution of the four dimensional Gauss-Bonnet term, the corresponding entanglement entropy has a divergent term and indeed restricted to an Einstein solution of the conformal gravity, the resultant entanglement entropy is exactly the same as that in the Einstein gravity. We will also make a comment on the first law of the entanglement thermodynamics for the…
The path integral for higher-derivative quantum gravity with torsion is considered. Applying the methods of two-dimensional quantum gravity, this path integral is analyzed in the limit of conformally self-dual metrics. A scaling law for fixed-volume geometry is obtained.
We investigate the properties of 2-D gravity in the Batalin and Vilkovisky quantization scheme. We find a factorized structure which exhibits duality properties analogous to those existing in the topological theories of forms. New conformal field are introduced with their invariant action.
The general structure of the conformal anomaly and the dilaton's effect to it are analysed. First we give a new formal proof of the statement that the conformal anomaly, in the theory which is conformal invariant at the classical level, is conformal invariant. The heat-kernel regularization and Fujikawa's method are taken for the analysis. We present a new explicit result of the conformal anomaly in 4 dimensional photon-dilaton gravity. This result is examined from the point of the general structure.
We compute the heat kernel for the Laplacians of symmetric transverse traceless fields of arbitrary spin on the $AdS$ background in even number of dimensions using the group theoretic approach introduced in \cite{Gopakumar:2011qs} and apply it on the partition function of six dimensional conformal gravity. The obtained partition function consists of the Einstein gravity, conformal ghost and two modes that contain mass.
Conformal gravity on noncommutative spacetime is considered in this paper. The presupposed gravity action consists of the Brans-Dicke gravity action with a special prefactor of the term, where the Ricci scalar couples to the scalar field, to maintain local conformal invariance and the Weyl gravity action. The commutation relations between the coordinates defining the noncommutative geometry are assumed to be of canonical shape. Based on the moyal star product, products of fields depending on the noncommutative coordinates are replaced by generalized expressions containing the usual fields and …
We explicitly calculate the induced gravity theory at the boundary of an asymptotically Anti-de Sitter five dimensional Einstein gravity. We also display the action that encodes the dynamics of radial diffeomorphisms. It is found that the induced theory is a four dimensional conformal gravity plus a scalar field. This calculation confirms some previous results found by a different approach.
The effective potential which describes the conformal dynamics of quantum gravity with torsion is discussed. The phase transitions induced by the combination of torsion and curvature are investigated. The mechanism for fixing the vacuum expectation values of the metric and torsion is presented.

Gauge invariant formulation for such currents and shadow fields is developed. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving the Stueckelberg fields. Realization of global conformal boost symmetries is obtained. Gauge invariant differential constraints for currents and shadow fields are obtained. AdS/CFT correspondence for currents and shadow fields and the respective normalizable and non-normalizable solutions of massless totally symmetric arbitrary spin…
The linearized spectrum and the algebra of global symmetries of conformal higher-spin gravity decompose into infinitely many representations of the conformal algebra. Their characters involve divergent sums over spins. We propose a suitable regularization adapted to their evaluation and observe that their characters are actually equal. This result holds in the case of type-A and type-B (and their higher-depth generalizations) theories and confirms previous observations on a remarkable rearrangement of dynamical degrees of freedom in conformal higher-spin gravity after regularization.
A central feature of scattering amplitudes in gravity or gauge theory is the existence of a variety of energetically soft theorems which put constraints on the amplitudes. Celestial amplitudes which are obtained from momentum-space amplitudes by a Mellin transform over the external particle energies cannot obey the usual energetically soft theorems. Instead, the symmetries of the celestial sphere imply that the scattering of conformally soft particles whose conformal weights under the 4D Lorentz group SL(2,C) are taken to zero obey special relations. Such conformally soft theorems have recentl…
We discuss D-dimensional scalar and electromagnetic fields interacting with a quantized metric. The gravitons depend solely on twodimensional coordinates. We consider a conformal field theory model for the metric tensor. We show that an interaction with gravity improves the short distance behaviour. As a result there is no charge renormalization in the fourdimensional Higgs model.
The conformal transformation in the Einstein - Hilbert action leads to a new frame where an extra scalar degree of freedom is compensated by the local conformal-like symmetry. We write down a most general action resulting from such transformation and show that it covers both general relativity and conformally coupled to gravity scalar field as the particular cases. On quantum level the equivalence between the different frames is disturbed by the loop corrections. New conformal-like symmetry in anomalous and, as a result, the theory is not finite on shell at the one-loop order.
The path integral of four dimensional quantum gravity is restricted to conformally self-dual metrics. It reduces to integrals over the conformal factor and over the moduli space of conformally self--dual metrics and can be studied with the methods of two dimensional quantum gravity in conformal gauge. The conformal anomaly induces an analog of the Liouville action. The proposal of David, Distler and Kawai is generalized to four dimensions. Critical exponents and the analog of the c=1 barrier of two dimensional gravity are derived. Connections with Weyl gravity and four dimensional topological …
We propose a non-critical string field theory for $2d$ quantum gravity coupled to ($p$,$q$) conformal fields. The Hamiltonian is described by the generators of the $W_p$ algebra, and the Schwinger-Dyson equation is equivalent to a vacuum condition imposed on the generators of $W_p$ algebra.
Conformal supergravity amplitudes are obtained from the double-copy construction using gauge-theory amplitudes, and compared to direct calculations starting from conformal supergravity Lagrangians. We consider several different theories: minimal ${\cal N}=4$ conformal supergravity, non-minimal ${\cal N}=4$ Berkovits-Witten conformal supergravity, mass-deformed versions of these theories, as well as supersymmetry truncations thereof. Coupling the theories to a Yang-Mills sector is also considered. For all cases we give the gravity Lagrangians that the double copy implicitly generates. The two m…
