The main goal of this paper is to get in a straightforward form the field equations in metric f(R) gravity, using elementary variational principles and adding a boundary term in the action, instead of the usual treatment in an equivalent scalar-tensor approach. We start with a brief review of the Einstein-Hilbert action, together with the Gibbons-York-Hawking boundary term, which is mentioned in some literature, but is generally missing. Next we present in detail the field equations in metric f(R) gravity, including the discussion about boundaries, and we compare with the Gibbons-York-Hawking term in General Relativity. We notice that this boundary term is necessary in order to have a well defined extremal action principle under metric variation.
This Editorial introduces the Special Issue "Progress in Group Field Theory and Related Quantum Gravity Formalisms" which includes a number of research and review articles covering results in the group field theory (GFT) formalism for quantum gravity and in various neighbouring areas of quantum gravity research. We give a brief overview of the basic ideas of the GFT formalism, list some of its connections to other fields, and then summarise all contributions to the Special Issue.
In this short note we study unimodular gravity in Weyl-De Donder formalism. We find corresponding Hamiltonian and study consequence of the unimodular constraint on the conjugate covariant momenta. We also find covariant Hamiltonian for Henneaux-Teitelboim unimodular action and study corresponding equations of motion.
We investigate a cosmological scenario by finding solutions using first-order formalism in the Horndeski gravity that constrains the superpotential and implies that no free choice of scalar potential is allowed. Despite this we show that a de Sitter phase at late-time cosmology can be realized, where the dark energy sector can be identified. The scalar field equation of state tends to the cosmological scenario at present time and allows us to conclude that it can simulate the dark energy in the Horndeski gravity.
This work discuss the construction of braneworld solutions in modified gravity with Lagrange multipliers. We examine the general aspects of the model and present a first order formalism that help us to find analytic solutions of the equations of motion. We also investigate some explicit models, analyse linear stability of the metric and comment on how to relate models investigated in other works to the ones examined in the present study.
This is a shortened version of an invited talk at the XIII International Workshop "Lie Theory and its Applications in Physics", June 17-23, Varna, Bulgaria. A covariant canonical gauge theory of gravity free from torsion is studied. Using a metric conjugate momentum and a connection conjugate momentum, which takes the form of the Riemann tensor, a gauge theory of gravity is formulated, with form-invariant Hamiltonian. By the metric conjugate momenta, a correspondence between the Affine-Palatini formalism and the metric formalism is established. For, when the dynamical gravitational Hamiltonian…
In the Rastall gravity a non-minimal coupling between geometry and matter fields is considered. Then the usual energy-momentum tensor conservation law is not valid. Here a Lagrangian formalism is proposed to the Rastall theory of gravity. The Gödel-type universe is studied in this gravitational model. Then it is studied whether this theory permits causality violation. The field equations do not exclude solutions with a breakdown of causality for a perfect fluid as matter content. In this case, an expression for the critical radius (beyond which the causality is violated) is determined. In addi…
The quadratic gravity constraints are reformulated in terms of the Newman-Penrose-like quantities. In such a frame language, the field equations represent a linear algebraic system for the Ricci tensor components. In principle, a procedure for the combination of the Ricci components with standard geometric identities can be applied in a similar way as in the case of general relativity. These results could serve in various subsequent analyses and physical interpretations of admitted solutions to quadratic gravity. Here, we demonstrate the utility of such an approach by explicitly proving genera…
We present a concise description of the basic features of gravity-matter models based on the formalism of non-canonical spacetime volume-forms in its two versions: the method of non-Riemannian volume-forms (metric-independent covariant volume elements) and the dynamical spacetime formalism. Among the principal outcomes we briefly discuss: (i) quintessential universe evolution with a gravity-"inflaton"-assisted suppression in the "early" universe and, respectively, dynamical generation in the "late" universe of Higgs spontaneous electroweak gauge symmetry breaking; (ii) unified description of d…
In this work, we analyse the thermodynamical behavior of massive and massless particles within Loop Quantum Gravity formalism. We investigate a modified dispersion relation which suffices to derive all our results of interest in an \textit{analytical} manner. Initially, we study the massive case where, in essence, we examine how the mass modifies the thermodynamical properties of the system. On the other hand, to the massless case, the thermodynamical system turns out to rely only on a specific thermal state quantity, the temperature. More so, the analysis of the spectral radiation, the equati…
We work out the description of the gauge symmetry of unimodular gravity in the constrained Hamiltonian formalism. In particular, we demonstrate how the transversality conditions restricting the diffeomorphism parameters emerge from the algebra of the Hamiltonian constraints. The alternative form is long known as parametrizing the volume preserving diffeomorphisms by unrestricted two-forms instead of the transverse vector fields. This gauge symmetry is reducible. We work out the Hamiltonian description of this form of unimodular gravity (UG) gauge symmetry. Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin--Batalin-Fr…
Within the general framework of spatially covariant theories of gravity, we study the conditions for having only the two tensorial degrees of freedom. Generally, there are three degrees of freedom propagating in the theory, of which two are tensorial and one is of the scalar type. Through a detailed Hamiltonian analysis, we find two necessary and sufficient conditions to evade the scalar type degree of freedom. The first condition implies that the lapse-extrinsic curvature sector must be degenerate. The second condition ensures that the dimension of the phase space at each spacetime point is e…
Canonical formulation of higher order theory of gravity can only be accomplished associating additional degrees of freedom, which are extrinsic curvature tensor. Consequently, to match Cauchy data with the boundary data, terms in addition to the three-space metric, must also be fixed at the boundary. While, in all the three, viz. Ostrogradski's, Dirac's and Horowitz' formalisms, extrinsic curvature tensor is kept fixed at the boundary, a modified Horowitz' formalism fixes Ricci scalar, instead. It has been taken as granted that the Hamiltonian structure corresponding to all the formalisms with…
We use the 1+1+2 covariant approach to clarify a number of aspects of spherically symmetric solutions of non-minimally coupled scalar tensor theories. Particular attention is focused on the extension of Birkhoff's theorem and the nature of quasi-local horizons in this context.
The covariant Stückelberg formalism is applied to bi-gravity in order to revisit the issue of absence of the Boulware-Deser (BD) ghost. We first confirm that the leading order action in the decoupling limit for helicity-2 modes of metrics and helicity-0 mode of Stückelberg perturbations does not lead to higher time derivative in equations of motion, which suggests the absence of the BD ghost. By extending this method, we reconfirm that the BD ghost does not appear for arbitrary order of the perturbations at the decoupling limit in bi-gravity.
It is an old idea to realize Einstein's equations as a thermodynamical equation of state. Since then, there has been new conjectures to understand gravity from another point of view. In this way we can accept that the gravitational field is not an underlying one like an emergent force from other approaches based on the knowledge of relativity, quantum and black holes thermodynamics, and different statistical formalisms. One important question concerning this gravity/thermostatistics correspondence is whether the holographic screen could be well defined for a nonrelativistic case of a source ma…
The in-out formalism is a systematic and powerful method for finding the effective actions in an electromagnetic field and a curved spacetime provided that the field equation has explicitly known solutions. The effective action becomes complex when pairs of charged particles are produced due to an electric field and curved spacetime. This may lead to a conjecture of one-to-one correspondence between the vacuum polarization (real part) and the vacuum persistence (imaginary part). We illustrate the one-loop effective action in a constant electric field in a Minkowski spacetime and in a uniform e…
Gravitational theories invariant under transverse diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations have the same classical solutions as the corresponding fully diffeomorphism invariant theories. However, they solve some of the problems related to the cosmological constant and in principle allow local energy non-conservation. In the present work, we obtain the Noether charge formalism for these theories. We first derive expressions for the Noether currents and charges corresponding to transverse diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations, showing that the latter vanish identically. We then use these resu…
Nonlocal gravity models are constructed to explain the current acceleration of the universe. These models are inspired by the infrared correction appearing in Einstein Hilbert action. Here we develop the Hamiltonian formalism of a nonlocal model by considering only terms to quadratic order in Ricci tensor and Ricci scalar. We also show how to count the degree of freedom using Hamiltonian formalism in this model.
In this work, by employing the exterior algebra formalism, we study the matter coupling in Minimal Massive 3D Gravity (MMG) by first considering that the matter Lagrangian is connection-independent and then considering that the matter coupling is connection-dependent. The matter coupling in MMG has been previously investigated in the work Arvanitakis {\it et al} (2014 {\it Class. Quantum Grav.} {\bf 31} 235012) in tensorial notation where the matter Lagrangian is considered to be connection-independent. In the first part of the present paper, we revisit the connection-independent matter coupli…
