We develop a nonperturbative quantum field formalism to describe scalar gauge-invariant metric flucturations in the early universe from a 5D apparent (Ricci flat) vacuum.
We develop a nonperturbative quantum scalar field formalism from a noncompact Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory using the induced-matter theory of gravity during inflation. We study the particular case of a de Sitter expansion for the universe.
We study the dynamics of the quantum scalar field responsible for inflation in different epochs of the evolution of the universe by using a recently introduced nonperturbative formalism from a 5D apparent vacuum.
We study the phi^4 scalar field theory in de Sitter space using the 2PI effective action formalism. This formalism enables us to investigate the nonperturbative quantum effects. We use the mean field and gap equations and calculate the physical mass and effective potential. We find that nonperturbative infrared effects on de Sitter space produce a curvature-induced mass and work to restore the broken Z_2 symmetry.
We study a stochastic formalism for a nonperturbative treatment of the inflaton field in the framework of a noncompact Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory during an inflationary (de Sitter) expansion, without the slow-roll approximation.
Asymptotic safety describes a scenario in which general relativity can be quantized as a conventional field theory, despite being nonrenormalizable when expanding it around a fixed background geometry. It is formulated in the framework of the Wilsonian renormalization group and relies crucially on the existence of an ultraviolet fixed point, for which evidence has been found using renormalization group equations in the continuum. "Causal Dynamical Triangulations" (CDT) is a concrete research program to obtain a nonperturbative quantum field theory of gravity via a lattice regularization, and r…
In recent years it has been noted that the perturbative treatment of the statistics of fluctuations may fail to make correct predictions for the abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs). Moreover, it has been shown in some explicit single-field examples that the nonperturbative effects may lead to an exponential tail for the probability distribution function (PDF) of fluctuations responsible for PBH formation -- in contrast to the PDF being Gaussian, as suggested by perturbation theory. In this paper, we advocate that the so-called $δN$ formalism can be considered as a simple, yet effective,…
The Hamiltonian formulation of scalar-tensor theories of gravity is derived from their Lagrangian formulation by Hamiltonian analysis. The Hamiltonian formalism marks off two sectors of the theories by the coupling parameter $ω(ϕ)$. In the sector of $ω(ϕ)=-3/2$, the feasible theories are restricted and a new primary constraint generating conformal transformations of spacetime is obtained, while in the other sector of $ω(ϕ)\neq-3/2$, the canonical structure and constraint algebra of the theories are similar to those of general relativity coupled with a scalar field. By canonical transformations…
Using the formalism of superconnections, we show the existence of a bosonic action functional for the standard K-cycle in noncommutative geometry, giving rise, through the spectral action principle, only to the Einstein gravity and Standard Model Yang-Mills-Higgs terms. It provides an effective nonminimal coupling in the bosonic sector of the Lagrangian.
We study the exact renormalization group (RG) in $R^2$-gravity in the effective average action formalism using the background field method. The truncated evolution equation (where truncation is made to low-derivatives functionals space) for such a theory in a de Sitter background leads to a set of nonperturbative RG equations for cosmological and gravitational coupling constants. The gauge dependence problem is solved by working in the physical Landau-De Witt gauge corresponding to gauge-fixing independent effective action. Approximate solution of nonperturbative RG equations reveals the appea…

Nonperturbative renormalization group techniques have recently proven a powerful tool to tackle the nontrivial infrared dynamics of light scalar fields in de Sitter space. In the present article, we develop the formalism beyond the local potential approximation employed in earlier works. In particular, we consider the derivative expansion, a systematic expansion in powers of field derivatives, appropriate for long wavelength modes, that we generalize to the relevant case of a curved metric with Lorentzian signature. The method is illustrated with a detailed discussion of the so-called local po…

A spin network is a generalization of a knot or link: a graph embedded in space, with edges labelled by representations of a Lie group, and vertices labelled by intertwining operators. Such objects play an important role in 3-dimensional topological quantum field theory, functional integration on the space A/G of connections modulo gauge transformations, and the loop representation of quantum gravity. Here, after an introduction to the basic ideas of nonperturbative canonical quantum gravity, we review a rigorous approach to functional integration on A/G in which L^2(A/G) is spanned by states …
The infrared effects for light minimally coupled scalar fields with quartic self-interaction in de Sitter space is investigated using the 2PI effective action formalism. This formalism partially resums infinite series of loop diagrams, and enables us to circumvent the IR divergence problem for a massless minimally coupled scalar field in de Sitter space. It is anticipated that nonperturbative infrared effects generate a curvature-induced mass and self-regulate the IR divergence. However, due to its nonperturbative nature, the renormalization prescription is a nontrivial task. To calculate phys…
We use the worldline formalism for calculating the one-loop effective action for the Einstein-Maxwell background induced by charged scalars or spinors, in the limit of low energy and weak gravitational field but treating the electromagnetic field nonperturbatively. The effective action is obtained in a form which generalizes the standard proper-time representation of the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian. We compare with previous work and discuss possible applications.
We present the $d+1$ formulation of Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (ESGB) theories in dimension $D=d+1$ and for arbitrary (spacelike or timelike) slicings. We first build an action which generalizes those of Gibbons-Hawking-York and Myers to ESGB theories, showing that they can be described by a Dirichlet variational principle. We then generalize the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) Lagrangian and Hamiltonian to ESGB theories, as well as the resulting $d+1$ decomposition of the equations of motion. Unlike general relativity, the canonical momenta of ESGB theories are nonlinear in the extrinsic curvat…
Using a formalism recently introduced we study the decaying of the cosmological parameter during the early evolution of an universe, whose evolution is governed by a vacuum equation of state. We use a stochastic approach in a nonperturbative treatment of the inflaton field from a Noncompact Kaluza-Klein (NKK) theory, to study the evolution of energy density fluctuations in the early universe.
A crucial property of Weyl gravity is its conformal invariance. It is shown how this gauge symmetry is exactly reflected by the two constraints in the Hamiltonian framework. Since the spatial 3-metric is one of the configuration variables, the phase space of Weyl gravity can be extended to include internal gauge freedom by triad formalism. Moreover, by canonical transformations, we obtain two new Hamiltonian formulations of Weyl gravity with an SU(2) connection as one of its configuration variables. The connection-dynamical formalisms lay the foundation to quantize Weyl gravity nonperturbative…
The successful background-independent quantization of Loop Quantum Gravity relies on the key observation that classical General Relativity can be cast into the connection-dynamical formalism with the structure group of SU(2). Due to this particular formalism, Loop Quantum Gravity was generally considered as a quantization scheme that applies only to General Relativity. However, we will show that the nonperturbative quantization procedure of Loop Quantum Gravity can be extended to a rather general class of metric theories of gravity, which have received increased attention recently due to motiv…
