We perform the Hamiltonian analysis of the specific model of the non-linear massive gravity in Stuckelberg formalism where the square root structure is replaced by introducing auxiliary fields. We show that the constraint structure of given theory varies over the phase space and discuss possible consequences of this fact for the counting of the physical degrees of freedom.
In this note we try to prove the absence of the ghosts in case of the general non-linear massive gravity action in Stuckelberg formalism. We argue that in order to find the explicit form of the Hamiltonian it is natural to start with the general non-linear massive gravity action found in arXiv:1106.3344 [hep-th]. We perform the complete Hamiltonian analysis of the Stuckelberg form of the minimal the non-linear gravity action in this formulation and show that the constraint structure is so rich that it is possible to eliminate non-physical modes. Then we extend this analysis to the case of the …
The covariant Stückelberg formalism is applied to bi-gravity in order to revisit the issue of absence of the Boulware-Deser (BD) ghost. We first confirm that the leading order action in the decoupling limit for helicity-2 modes of metrics and helicity-0 mode of Stückelberg perturbations does not lead to higher time derivative in equations of motion, which suggests the absence of the BD ghost. By extending this method, we reconfirm that the BD ghost does not appear for arbitrary order of the perturbations at the decoupling limit in bi-gravity.
We consider supersymmetric theories with a warped extra dimension where supersymmetry is broken by boundary conditions that preserve an R-symmetry. It is shown that this supersymmetry breaking mechanism naturally invokes the Stuckelberg formalism for the gravitino in order to give a four-dimensional theory with a smooth massless limit.
Using the general notions of Batalin, Fradkin, Fradkina and Tyutin to convert second class systems into first class ones, we present a gauge invariant formulation of the massive Yang-Mills theory by embedding it in an extended phase space. The infinite set of correction terms necessary for obtaining the involutive constraints and Hamiltonian is explicitly computed and expressed in a closed form. It is also shown that the extra fields introduced in the correction terms are exactly identified with the auxiliary scalars used in the generalized Stückelberg formalism for converting a gauge noninvar…
Massive Gravity in four dimensions has been shown to be free of the Boulware-Deser (BD) ghost in the ADM language for a specific choice of mass terms. We show here how this is consistent with the Stückelberg language beyond the decoupling limit, and how the constraint required to remove the BD ghost arises in this framework nonperturbatively, without the use of field redefinitions. We emphasize a subtlety in obtaining this constraint, that has been overlooked in previous literature. In both the ADM and Stückelberg formalisms the vanishing of the determinant of a Hessian guarantees the absence …
The Stückelberg analysis of nonlinear massive gravity in the presence of a general fiducial metric is investigated. We develop a "covariant" formalism for the Stückelberg expansion by working with a local inertial frame, through which helicity modes can be characterized correctly. Within this covariant approach, an extended $Λ_3$ decoupling limit analysis can be consistently performed, which keeps $\bar{R}_{μνρσ}/m^2$ fixed with $\bar{R}_{μνρσ}$ the Riemann tensor of the fiducial metric. In this extended decoupling limit, the scalar mode $π$ acquires self-interactions due to the presence of th…
We discuss the no-ghost theorem in the massive gravity in a covariant manner. Using the BRST formalism and Stückelberg fields, we first clarify how the Boulware-Deser ghost decouples in the massive gravity theory with Fierz-Pauli mass term. Here we find that the crucial point in the proof is that there is no higher (time) derivative for the Stückelberg `scalar' field. We then analyze the nonlinear massive gravity proposed by de Rham, Gabadadze and Tolley, and show that there is no ghost for general admissible backgrounds. In this process, we find a very nontrivial decoupling limit for general …
We perform the Hamiltonian analysis of some form of the non-linear massive gravity action that is formulated in the Stuckelberg formalism. Following seminal analysis performed in arXiv:1203.5283 [hep-th] we find that this theory possesses one primary constraint which could eliminate one additional mode in this theory. We performed the explicit Hamiltonian analysis of two dimensional non-linear massive gravity and we found that this is theory free from the ghosts.
The hyperplane and proper time formalisms are discussed mainly for the spin-half particles in the quantum case. A connection between these covariant Hamiltonian formalisms is established. It is showed that choosing the space-like hyperplanes instantaneously orthogonal to the direction of motion of the particle the proper time formalism is retrieved on the mass shell. As a consequence, the relation between the Stückelberg-Feynman picture and the standard canonical picture of quantum field theory is clarified.
We reassess the conclusion by Klusoň (J. High Energy Phys. 1007 (2010) 038) that the Hamiltonian formulation of the healthy extended Hořava-Lifshitz gravity does not present any problem.
This thesis is dedicated to the study of theories of massive gravity. The formulation of higher spin gauge field theories, along with a Chern-Simons (CS) like term for fields of higher spins is presented. Through this setup, general features of theories describing massless/massive fields of higher spin in arbitrary dimensions is discussed. In 2+1 dimensions, the existence of multiple mass-generating mechanisms i.e. metric-based masses and topological masses, offers the possibility for gauge bosons to acquire mixed masses. This scenario is first introduced in a theory of photons where both Proc…
By using a solution ansatz we partially decouple the metric and the Stuckelberg sectors of the minimal massive gravity (MMGR). In this scheme for a diagonal physical metric we find the general solutions for the scalars of the theory and the particular fiducial (background) metric which leads to these solutions. Then we adopt this general formalism to construct the derivation of new Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmologies of the theory in the presence of a so-called effective ideal fluid which arises from our solution ansatz as a modifying, non-physical source for the Einstein an…
We present the newly improved Batalin-Fradkin-Tyutin (BFT) Hamiltonian formalism and the generalization to the Lagrangian formulation, which provide the much more simple and transparent insight to the usual BFT method, with application to the non-Abelian Proca model which has been an difficult problem in the usual BFT method. The infinite terms of the effectively first class constraints can be made to be the regular power series forms by ingenious choice of $X_{αβ}$ and $ω^{αβ}$-matrices. In this new method, the first class Hamiltonian, which also needs infinite correction terms is obtained si…
The HLE theorem is proven for effective Lagrangians with arbitrary interactions of scalars, fermions, massless and massive vector bosons. This theorem states that the correct Hamiltonian path intergral formalism is equivalent to the convenient Lagrangian path integral ansatz. In particular, this theorem is valid for effective gauge theories, which justifies Faddeev-Popov quantization of these theories. Specific attention is paid to effective interactions of massive vector fields, which can be embedded within gauge noninvariant theories or within spontaneously broken gauge theories. These diffe…
By dimensional reduction of a massive supersymmetric B$\wedge $F theory, a manifestly N=1 supersymmetric completion of a massive antisymmetric tensor gauge theory is constructed in (2+1) dimensions. In the N=1-D=3 superspace, a new topological term is used to give mass for the Kalb-Ramond field. We have introduced a massive gauge invariant model using the Stuckelberg formalism and an abelian topologically massive theory for the Kalb-Ramond superfield. An equivalence of both massive models is suggested. Further, a component field analysis is performed, showing a second supersymmetry in the mode…
In this paper we display a direct and physically attractive derivation of the screening contribution to the interaction potential in the Chiral Schwinger model and generalized Maxwell-Chern-Simons gauge theory. It is shown that these results emerge naturally when a correct separation between gauge-invariant and gauge degrees of freedom is made. Explicit expressions for gauge-invariant fields are found.
The effective field theory of massive gravity had long been formulated in a generally covariant way arXiv:hep-th/0210184. Using this formalism, it has been found recently that there exists a class of massive nonlinear theories that are free of the Boulware-Deser ghosts, at least in the decoupling limit arXiv:1007.0443. In this work we study other recently proposed models that go under the name of "gravitational Higgs theories" arXiv:1002.3877, arXiv:1008.5132. We show that these models, although seemingly different from the effective field theories of massive gravity, are in fact equivalent to…
In this paper, we reassess the issue of working out the propagators and identifying the spectrum of excitations associated to the vielbein and spin connection of (1+2)-D gravity in the presence of torsion by adopting the first-order formulation. A number of peculiarities is pointed out whenever the Chern-Simons term is taken into account along with the possible bilinear terms in the torsion tensor. We present a procedure to derive the full set of propagators, based on a set of spin-type operators, and we discuss under which conditions the pole of these tree-level 2-point functions correspond t…
In this paper the novel features of Yokoyama gaugeon formalism are stressed out for the theory of perturbative quantum gravity in Einstein curved spacetime. The quantum gauge transformations for the theory of perturbative gravity are demonstrated in the framework of gaugeon formalism. These quantum gauge transformations lead to renormalized gauge parameter. Further, we analyse the BRST symmetric gaugeon formalism which embeds more acceptable Kugo-Ojima subsidiary condition. Further, the BRST symmetry is made finite and field-dependent. Remarkably, the Jacobian of path integral under finite and…
This article reviews the status of several solutions to all the constraints of quantum gravity that have been proposed in terms of loops and extended loops. We discuss pitfalls of several of the results and in particular discuss the issues of covariance and regularization of the constraints in terms of extended loops. We also propose a formalism for ``thickened out loops'' which does not face the covariance problems of extended loops and may allow to regularize expressions in a consistent manner.
We point out that there exists a family of transformations acting on BF-type Lagrangians of gravity, with Lagrangians related by such a transformation corresponding to classically equivalent theories. A transformation of this type corresponds to a particular field redefinition. We discuss both the chiral and non-chiral cases. In the chiral case there is a one-parameter, and in the non-chiral case a two-parameter family of such transformations. In the chiral setup, we use these transformations to give an alternative derivation of the chiral BF plus potential formulation of General Relativity th…
We consider the non-relativistic limit of gravity in four dimensions in the first order formalism. First, we revisit the case of the Einstein-Hilbert action and formally discuss some geometrical configurations in vacuum and in the presence of matter at leading order. Second, we consider the more general Mardones-Zanelli action and its non-relativistic limit. The field equations and some interesting geometries, in vacuum and in the presence of matter, are formally obtained. Remarkably, in contrast to the Einstein-Hilbert limit, the set of field equations is fully determined because the boost co…
We consider the probabilistic description of nonrelativistic, spinless one-particle classical mechanics, and immerse the particle in a deformed noncommutative phase space in which position coordinates do not commute among themselves and also with canonically conjugate momenta. With a postulated normalized distribution function in the quantum domain, the square of the Dirac delta density distribution in the classical case is properly realised in noncommutative phase space and it serves as the quantum condition. With only these inputs, we pull out the entire formalisms of noncommutative quantum …
The formulation of Seiberg-Witten maps from the point of view of consistent deformations of gauge theories in the context of the Batalin-Vilkovisky antifield formalism is reviewed. Some additional remarks on noncommutative Yang-Mills theory are made.
We explore the ultra-relativistic limit of a class of four dimensional gravity theories, known as Lovelock-Cartan gravities, in the first order formalism. First, we review the well known limit of the Einstein-Hilbert action. A very useful scale symmetry involving the vierbeins and the boost connection is presented. Moreover, we explore the field equations in order to find formal solutions. Some remarkable results are obtained: Riemann and Weitzenböck like manifolds are discussed; Birkhoff's theorem is verified for the torsionless case; an explicit solution with non-trivial geometry is discusse…
In order to eliminate gauge variant degrees of freedom we study the way to introduce gauge invariant fields in pure non-Abelian Yang-Mills theory. Our approach is based on the use of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. It is shown that for a special class of paths these fields coincide with the usual ones in some definite gauges. The interquark potential is discussed by exploiting the rich structure of the gluonic cloud or dressing around static fermions.
We consider the static quantum potential for a gauge theory which includes a light massive vector field interacting with the familiar $U(1)_{QED}$ photon via a Chern-Simons- like coupling, by using the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent, variables formalism. An exactly screening phase is then obtained, which displays a marked departure of a qualitative nature from massive axionic electrodynamics. The above static potential profile is similar to that encountered in axionic electrodynamics consisting of a massless axion-like field, as well as to that encountered in the coupling between the fami…
In this work we prove in a precise way that the soldering formalism can be applied to the Srivastava chiral boson (SCB), in contradiction with some results appearing in the literature. We have promoted a canonical transformation that shows directly that the SCB is composed of two Floreanini-Jackiw's particles with the same chirality which spectrum is a vacuum-like one. As another conflictive result we have proved that a Wess-Zumino term used in the literature consists of the scalar field, once again denying the assertion that the WZ term adds a new degree of freedom to the SCB theory in order …
We analyze the constraints for a system of anti self-dual Yang-Mills (ASDYM) equations by means of the modified Faddeev-Jackiw method in K and J gauges à la Yang. We also establish the Hamiltonian flow for ASDYM system through the hidden BRS invariance in both the gauges. Finally, we remark on the bi-Hamiltonian nature of ASDYM and the compatibility of the symplectic structures therein.
This work propose an alternative and systematic way to obtain a canonical Lagrangian formulation for rotational systems. This will be done in the symplectic framework and with the introduction of extra variables which enlarge the phase space. In fact, this formalism provides a remarkable and new result to compute the canonical Lagrangian formulation for rotational systems, {\it i.e.}, the obstruction to the construction of a canonical formalism can be solved in an arbitrary way and, consequently, a set of dynamically equivalent Lagrangian descriptions can be computed.
We give a detailed and improved presentation of our recently proposed formalism for non-linear perturbations in cosmology, based on a covariant and fully non-perturbative approach. We work, in particular, with a covector combining the gradients of the energy density and of the local number of e-folds to obtain a non-linear generalization of the familiar linear uniform density perturbation. We show that this covector obeys a remarkably simple conservation equation which is exact, fully non-linear and valid at all scales. We relate explicitly our approach to the coordinate-based formalisms for l…
The most convenient tool to study the renormalization of a Lagrangian field theory invariant under non linear local or global symmetries is the proper solution to the master equation of the extended antifield formalism. It is shown that, from the knowledge of the BRST cohomology, it is possible to explicitly construct a further extension of the formalism containing all the observables of the theory and satisfying an extended master equation, with some of the features of the quantum Batalin-Vilkovisky master equation already present at the classical level. This solution has the remarkable prope…
The covariant canonical formalism is a covariant extension of the traditional canonical formalism of fields. In contrast to the traditional canonical theory, it has a remarkable feature that canonical equations of gauge theories or gravity are not only manifestly Lorentz covariant but also gauge covariant or diffeomorphism covariant. A mathematical peculiarity of the covariant canonical formalism is that its canonical coordinates are differential forms on a manifold. In the present paper, we find a natural Poisson bracket of this new canonical theory, and study symplectic structure behind it. …
We have constructed a new formalism for describing a situation with {\color{red} several (dual) strings} present at a time, a {\color{red} string field theory}, by means of a constituent / a strings from objects picture similar to, but importantly different from the "bits" by Charles Thorn\cite{Thorn}. Our "objects" (essentially the bits) represent rather a making a lattice in the {\color{red} light cone variables} on the string. The remarkable feature and simplicity of our formalism is, that the "objects" do {\color{red} NOT interact}, basically just run or sit trivially fixed. {\color{red} S…
We suggest the Hamiltonian approach for fluid mechanics based on the dynamics, formulated in terms of Lagrangian variables. The construction of the canonical variables of the fluid sheds a light of the origin of Clebsh variables, introduced in the previous century. The developed formalism permits to relate the circulation conservation (Tompson theorem) with the invariance of the theory with respect to special diffiomorphisms and establish also the new conservation laws. We discuss also the difference of the Eulerian and Lagrangian description, pointing out the incompleteness of the first. The …
We consider both massive Euler-Heisenberg-like and Euler-Heisenberg-like Electrodynamics in the approximation of the strong-field limit. Our analysis shows that massive Euler-Heisenberg-type Electrodynamics displays the vacuum birefringence phenomenon. Afterwards, we calculate the lowest-order modifications to the interaction energy for both classes of Electrodynamics, within the framework of the gauge-invariant path-dependent variables formalism. Interestingly enough, for massive Euler-Heisenbeg-like electrodynamics (Whichmann-Kroll) we obtain a new long-range ($1/r^3$- type) correction, apar…
We consider the unitary Abelian Higgs model and investigate its spectral functions at one-loop order. This analysis allows to disentangle what is physical and what is not at the level of the elementary particle propagators, in conjunction with the Nielsen identities. We highlight the role of the tadpole graphs and the gauge choices to get sensible results. We also introduce an Abelian Curci-Ferrari action coupled to a scalar field to model a massive photon which, like the non-Abelian Curci-Ferarri model, is left invariant by a modified non-nilpotent BRST symmetry. We clearly illustrate its non…
This is a paper about geometry of (iterated) variations. We explain why no sources of divergence are built into the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) Laplacian, whence there is no need to postulate any ad hoc conventions such as "$δ(0)=0$" and "$\logδ(0)=0$" within BV-approach to quantisation of gauge systems. Remarkably, the geometry of iterated variations does not refer at all to the construction of Dirac's $δ$-function as a limit of smooth kernels. We illustrate the reasoning by re-deriving - but not just "formally postulating" - the standard properties of BV-Laplacian and Schouten bracket and by ver…
